I never thought I'd see another video covered on this. I played it a couple years ago cause of the Ghibli art style but I was actually enamoured by its music and atmosphere. Also the game having voice acting in a PS1 game was actually kinda sick and no random encounters! It was also not very long for an RPG which was a plus, I like a game that doesn't waste too much time. It's also a fairly unique setting for this genre at the time, I like the Aztec/Native theming. Nice video man
Yea, the leads at ghibli were amazing at bringing innovative style to games - and they usually did pretty good at partnering with companies that accentuated that with solid music, and at least semi-decent gameplay. I really wish we'd get more under-represented themes in games like this - seems hard to convince companies to step outside the safe zone when it comes to lore inspiration.
I definitely miss a lot about this age in gaming - felt like we had a lot more variety in the AA/AAA space - thankfully tools for indies have caught up to a point where we can rely on them a bit for innovation (just gotta get through all the noise of 14,000-18,000 games releasing per year lol)
I played this with my brother back then so much. We unlocked some unique monsters with the mixing system creating a brand new exotic animal not seen anywhere in the game roaster. True gem and deserve a deep dive
None are coming to mind that do it exactly like this (there's probably some in the indie scene), but it can be quite a bit of a nightmare to design it properly :)
@@Alzorath There's one game coming out called "Beast Socket" (I forget if it is still called that) that is attempting to put in a procedural breeding/fusion system
@@ionryful yes but those aren't proecdural in the same way the Jade cocoon ones are. They just have variants of the primary parent that correspond to the secondary parent
@@PregnantAdamSandler My brother and me managed to unlock some weird exotic monsters with the merging. 1 was like a blue crab and was all in in water elemental.. the other one was like a flying pelican with a round belly was also all in is elemental if I remember correctly.
PS2 isn't as bad, but yea, PS1's dithering and stuff can hurt without a filter - some games are better than others (was tempted to do internal scaler to compensate for that, but can cause some glitches, especially when it comes to the mixed 2d/3d games) Oddly, I don't mind sharp pixels as much if we go further back though (SNES/Genesis/NES/etc.) outside of a few games that pushed the systems, or used weird tricks (like waterfalls in Sonic), tend to do okay with sharp pixels.
It always amazes me how many games they worked on... and how many of them turned into cult classics (think the only one that's not a cult classic is literally the only Ghibli movie branded game - Nausicaa, which was a buggy mess lol)
Yea, the first little bit, the progress is pretty slow, especially if you listen to all the dialogue (worth it though) - it tends to pick up pace a little after each forest as things are implied to be more serious in the game (and then the post-game is whatever pace you want lol)
lol, my brain for a second went "But they did remake Lord of Destruction in D2R" - then I realized: "Legend of Dragoon" - yea, a remake that has been sorely needed for quite a while, and I'd be all over it (LoD is actually on my short list for Nostalgia bait - generally the poll split is "2 shortlist, 2 backlog" games, when I post them)
Jade Cocoon + Legend Of Dragoon were just on a different level in that JRPG Era. Their counter parts, final fantasy and chrono trigger/cross stole their lime-light. The latter were great games of course, but those two titles never got the media attention because they over lapped their release with the titans CT & FF became at the time.
Same way I was able to play it on CRT back in the day. I generally play things at their original internal resolution since I also am used to doing test runs of them on original hardware (it's easy, but not accurate to the original experience, to upscale the internal resolution)
I'm a simple man, I see Jade Cocoon, I click. This game was my game as a kid, even if I never ended up beating it lol
Brotha u played it and that's the biggest part of the battle .awesome game

There's videos all over UA-cam about this

Never heared of this channel and I'm 2 seconds in but covering Jade Cocoon is an instant like in my book
heh, I hope to cover the second one as well, though it will be a bit - the short list is ironically, pretty long ;)

yea, the merging methods were so ahead of their time, lead to so many fun unique monsters that are distinct to each person's playthrough :)
The fact that Jade Cocoon's fusion system has (to my knowledge) never been replicated in a modern monster catching game is absolutely criminal
None are coming to mind that do it exactly like this (there's probably some in the indie scene), but it can be quite a bit of a nightmare to design it properly :)

@PregnantAdamSandler Monster Crown on Steam has you able to breed hybrids...that's kinda like fusions?

Gosh those PS1 and PS2 games really need a CRT. We were not meant to see those raw pixels and dither patterns.

Yup, that game absolutely oozes Ghibli style. So many lovely little details, carefully put together to make a bigger whole.
That is Ghibli.

The main story can be beaten in a couple days but theres end game that just goes on and on in the eternal corridor.
When I was not allowed to play Pokemon this was my game.
lol, I ironically was never banned from pokemon, but did get banned from this one for Willy the Winged ;)
@Alzorath My parents were very religious.
I forgot about this game. I remember renting this or borrowing this player a little and then returned it because it wasn’t advancing

Man I so desperately wanted the original Playstation one. Jade Cacoon was a decent sub at least.
