it's an art form to train yourself to look for quality in fabric and cut, and ignore labels. You can find expensive looking pieces with good quality in any store. And it's how you put it together that makes it look expensive.

I tend to gravitate to shades of blues and black. My favourite accent colour is lime green. Of course I have white tops (long & short sleeve) that goes with everything. However, my umbrella must always be red. I love a red umbrella on a drab rainy day.

There can be huge variety in navy blues. I worked in a clothing store for 4 years and we actually had different navy blues for different seasons. Newport navy looks terrible on me but aviator navy looks great!

When I stopped dying my hair and went "grey," I had to change my colors. I found that camel didn't compliment me as well and busy patterns with salt & pepper hair was too much for me. Creams, navy, black, and Burgundy are my prominent colors now. Thank you for another interesting video.

I just went through my closet and discarded all my beige and brown items. You are correct with my hair showing a big gray streak in front ... these are just not flattering colors. I’ve been storing my clothing by color, since childhood. It’s not only practical, for me... it also somehow pleases my eye and sense of order. (I’m German-born... - wink - ) If i think about my wardrobe color scheme... it’s mostly black, navy blue and charcoal gray bottoms... and tops in those colors as well as purples, pinks/rose/burgundy and dark green. I do own a few white tops and a pair of white jeans, but I would not call them a major part of my wardrobe. (I think, every woman should have a white crisp men’s style button down shirt and a white blouse in a flowy fabric, in her closet.) In winter, I tend to wear more of the darker colors... while in spring and summer, I prefer my tops to be more in the light-to-medium tone range.

I had to purge a long time ago, and I couldn't believe how many things I was just keeping for the sake of it. Purging works!

I'm late to the party, but there are a couple of unspoken rules of thumb that govern the colors we wear in the United States. #1. A maximum of 3 colors in an outfit. Two neutrals and one non-neutral or three neutrals. If you wear a print, that counts as one color. #2. Only one print in an outfit, and the other pieces in your outfit ideally should pick up one of the colors in the print. #3. If your one-color outfit looks boring, you may need a statement accessory, like a cuff bracelet, or large-link chain necklace, or medium-sized earrings. I had to learn all of this by reading, reading, reading; my mom was an eccentric dresser, so I didn't grow up with it. All I knew is that I didn't fit in, so I set about learning what I was missing. I started with the Preppy Handbook, then Emily Cho's Looking Terrific and John T. Molloy's Dress for Success for Women, which is based on solid research, not just his opinion. You might be tempted to dismiss these books as outdated, but they really aren't. Ignore the cover art. The information is solid.

    • @edennis8578
      @edennis8578 2 роки тому

Just to add, if you really have a hard time looking classy, look at your hair. The older we get, the more careful we have to be with our hairstyles if we want to project a classy image. Think sleek, polished. Think Audrey Hepburn, for example. Either short and sleek or an updo work better, I've observed, than mid- to long-length loose hair after 45 unless it's unusually thick and shiny. Speaking of which, pay attention to the condition of your hair. If your hair is in bad condition, nothing can make you look classy. You could be wearing a million dollar outfit, but with fried-looking hair, it'll still look bad.
Also, shoes. Badly chosen footwear will ruin an otherwise great ensemble. For instance, a cashmere turtleneck sweater and high-quality wool trousers are an awesome combination, but when paired with combat boots, it's a big no, if you're going for chic. Simple, classic footwear is what you need.

In my opinion, the most important thing is to determine whether your skin undertone is warm or cold. According to that warm, earthy colors suit you or cold colors like blue work best. I could choose random pieces from my wardrobe with my eyes closed- they all match.

I always gravitate to black and navy, with brighter blues thrown in for basics but the rest changes by season. Grey is under-appreciated and goes a very long way towards tying everything in my closet together. I agree that seeing all of your clothes makes it sooooo much better. Currently I am in love with salmon and bright pink and some orange red tones. I almost went for yellow this season, but I just couldn't figure it out. If I feel the need for a different neutral I go for olive, usually in the fall. I am trying to use more white, I have always had an uneasy relationship with white because my skintone is the most yellow orange possible. I feel like bright white is not always flattering, so I am always on the hunt for a good shade of white/beige/tan that flatters - especially for the summer when all neutral can be amazing with a tan.

I had worn a silk shell that came with matching jacket & skirt. I left it hanging with another outfit. Unfortunately it was inadvertently donated to Goodwiil when I was sick & another family member was helping me with my closet!😟 Now I haven't found a piece that looks "right" to replace it! Sure, I could use cream or beige, but the sage green was so much prettier. A good lesson - look at every single piece you're donating! 💞💞

If you have unused items for last a few years just give them away... I have a white demin skirt I purchased over the summer per one of your videos about elevating your wardrobe! I have a purple knit top and a blousey-like top with blue and purple patterns. I've received compliments when I wear these! So my taste in color appear to run in the cool category. I also wear neutrals especially when it comes to coats and purses.

That's an excellent way to achieve an overview. I practise it for years and it leads to a wide range of combinations in few time. Especially if you collect cloth for ages.

Lovely white closet, so clean! Thanks! Sooner I come back to work. Now I have 4 jackets and some jeans blue, black and white, then you give an idea what kind I need more, shirts!
    I have black⚫️ , blue🔵, with stripes and a 💜purple shirt .
    Then I will buy: ⚪️🔴.
But I have some cloths that I like to much, are with patterns, shirts and dresses. This help me a lot on family reunions or events for the theater or on vacations; then I put all together at the end of the colors? Is because I have a rectangle body and some things help me a lot. Are only a few.

Ok, I just put all my colors together instead of by tanks, short sleeves, etc I put the pants and skirts together by color scheme now too. Put my small stuff away and now I can totally see what’s missing from my wardrobe. So much easier. Thanks!!!

Living in Hawaii I don’t wear too many jackets. I do have lighter cardigans as a 3rd layer. My main colors are black, navy blue and eggplant. I’m petite, pear shaped and heavier built. I’m extremely self conscious about my figure. I try to camouflage my stomach & butt. I’m slowly working to purge my closet. Since my lifestyle is more casual, I tend to dress more relaxed. I enjoy your guidance & will incorporate your tips throughout my fashion journey.

My main pieces are neutrals black and navy and a little grey
but I often accent with bright colours.
    Warm colours, suit me best
whole spectrum of reds, pinks, corals , rust etc
Also light and bright blues and berry shades,
And I especially love emerald green
with a touch of white with navy or black .
Your collection of colours look lovely.

Since I was 12 I've organized my clothes in the ROYGBIV color scheme. Tops are further organized from sleeveless to long sleeves. I do the same with skirts, trousers, and dresses.

I hang my clothes by colour too, same with my husband wardrobe 😅 Mainly lots of white and blue shades, lots of black, left from my fashion work uniform days too. Now I also introdused some red and mustard yellow pieces for spring summer season.

Driftwood lover has described me to a "T", with a major issue, fit. I am 5'3" with broad shoulders, hourglass, trying to find such nice fitting clothing is difficult. Such as a jacket, size 14 reg. arms are always too long, shoulders...I don't need the padding, breast area always tight, this is very frustrating. While a 14 Petite with quality manufacturer the item sizing usually puts me at a 16P, and they don't offer that size.

I’m finally finding and watching your videos that don’t come up much on UA-cam, so I know my comment is way outdated, but here is my color scheme: white, cool-toned pastels (pinks, greens, blues, mostly) to mid-tints, with cream/ivory if a highly-desired item doesn’t come in white. Outliers: royal and navy blue, medium cool toned greens & turquoise, burgundy, cooler taupes and beiges, olive/army green mostly for bottoms. Of course, a black blazer and shoes, one never knows when they might be needed. Most of my shoes are lighter neutrals. My scarves contain more intense colors. Never: yellow, yellow-greens, orange, warm browns - they don’t suit my cool-undertone, pale and muted complexion.

I think I look best in muted & warm tones and I like to have a lot of color to choose from; so during spring/summer my clothing is more light & bright, and during fall/winter its more muted and earthy.

Bonjour. I would love to try your technique, however, I have way too many clothes and too many colours. I change my colours according to the seasons. And, also prints. Right now moving slowly into spring I am bringing in more spring colours and prints such as florals and stripes. Merci.

New subscriber here with Spanish and Japanese heritage ☺️
I truly love your videos! 😍💕 Thank you indeed! 👏🏼
My truly favourite colour is RED since I was a little girl (almost 50 now 😉) which I love to combine with black and/or white or even the three of them together. I also love to wear red lipstick (I have long straight black hair and olive colour skin) 👩🏻

Brilliant video, that’s a great idea to hang my clothes from light to dark to see what I can pare down. I now see the outlier clothes that I bought when I gained weight. I’ve now lost 30lbs and fit back into my capsule wardrobe - classic neutrals with a dash of colourful Hermes scarves!

Hi Marie-Anne. I have basic pieces in black and navy. Tops in pure white and cool colors like true red, turquoise. Everything works well together. Having a "winter" complexion, I never wear off-white, beige, camel, tan, etc. I notice that you seem to have both warm and cool colors in your wardrobe. How does that work?
