I like cold showers and HIIT exercises for this reason. They induce natural deep breathing and are also a type of challenge to the anxiety response. I also like mindfulness meditation while doing deep breathing exercises, using books like 30 Days to Reduce Anxiety by Harper Daniels.

Finding ways to practice experiencing the mental and/or physical sensations of stress/anxiety and using deep breathing to overcome it is the best way to build the habit of using it as your first response. This is different for everyone such as going to social events, trying an open mic, going up heights, or even rollercoasters. The wonderful thing is how this style of breathing works for all types of situations!
