🥬 ABOUT HOT & SOUR MUSTARD GREEN VEGETABLE STEW | Choi Keok | Suen Lat Choy
Hot and Sour Mustard Green Stew, also known as 'choi keok' (leftover dish) or 'suen lat choi' (sour-spicy vegetable), is supposed to be a poor man's dish.
So not to waste food, leftover meat is cook with mustard green, tamarind, and red chili into a pot of appetising stew.
My family typically makes this after a large festival such as Chinese New Year as there is too much food left. This time, we made it because we happen to have a lot of mustard green in our garden and leftover pork belly.

It is the first time I watch your video. Enjoying your garden and mom's cooking. Thank you Ms.Khong! One of my favourite dish. I like to put in Siew yook, few types of mushrooms and wild fungus too. Sometimes mix a little sardines.

Oh wow those cute snails ! I saw them on the organic veg I bought. They were super tiny and I didn’t see them till I put the veg in the water to soak and clean 🤭
Thanks for your wonderful recipe. I love this dish and I will surely try it.

This is what I call comfort food that my mom used to make for us. After viewing your video, it brought back memories of my mom and her version of this dish. I really enjoy watching your videos. Keep up the good work, Sara. Cheers.

Comfort food indeed. The best food in the world is one made by Mom. Thank you for your encouragement. My Mom mentioned a few times that nobody is going to watch a video fo such easy recipe haha. Will surely show her this later. Maybe I'd record her reaction in my instagram story!

Sara Khong Thanks for sharing this recipe. I made this yesterday and it was delicious and so simple! I wasn’t sure if the middle stems of the mustard green is edible as it seemed really tough, so I discarded those. I added the ends of the stems first to boil longer (30 minutes) and then only added the leaves to simmer. Yummy. The husband approves.

@@sara_khong You need to stir fried chilli with oil (to get the red), roast pork, sardins (tomato & black bean mackeral), vege and everything (other ingredients) in big wok, than transfer to pot to boil till soft. Some people did not stir fried everything directly boil in pot with water, the taste not so favorful and tasty.

No sardine , no blsck bean fish, for my home recipe. You don't really need them.

Nope. Only at the end. Sometimes if the meat are salty enough, you don't even have to add it. Some people even put ketchup!
