    Thank you, Lau. I made this for my grandpa when he was very sick and dying of cancer. He could not eat very much, and especially not solid food. He rarely had an appetite to begin with, but he absolutely loved Asian soups his whole life, so I made this for him. It was light enough for him to eat even though he was feeling awful, and it soothed him just like the name. It brought me so much joy watching him slurp the soup after he had barely eaten anything for days. Your recipe brought him happiness in his final few weeks. Thank you so much. ❤️ I am back to this video again because I am now making this for myself. I'm reminded of him, so I wanted to express my gratitude through this comment.

      @@skye.325 I'm sorry it made you sad. It is undoubtedly going to be hard. My advice as someone who has gone through it is to tell her everything you've wanted to tell her so you have no regrets. Tell her you love her every day and make her feel loved. Be by her side and take care of her as much as you can. Do little things to make her happy and comfortable. Looking back and remembering that I did things like make soup for my grandfather to show him love before he passed brings me a sense of peace, because I know that I brightened his final days. If she passes, just know that life will go on eventually, even though grief is painful. Your memories of her will keep you going and it will always get better. Best wishes for her health, I hope she gets better and you won't need my advice ❤️

    For those who are not familiar with Cantonese home cooking, this soup might look “plain”, but plain/consommé soup with veggies and meat, is a must have on most daily family meals.
    Yes we have soup like this everyday, not sweet and sour pork which is basically a restaurant food, at least to my family.
    The soup is part of this traditional diet that “lure” you to keep hydrated, eat more veggies, moderate meat, less oil and less heavy condiments, which keep you thin and healthy lol.
    I feel so connected when I saw this channel introducing this without-a-very-inviting-look but realistic dish!

      It looks very inviting to me. I've been craving broths/light soups and want to switch up my diet as part of getting out of diabetes prevention, since I'm in the pre-diabetic range and need to avoid certain foods. When I quit smoking, pork bone broth was the only thing that would instantly settle my stomach.

      Sorry about the comment from Monkey JumpStarr. This is a friendly Asian father and family. I am Caucasian and my first job was working in a Chinese kitchen, yeah no kidding and I loved working with them. Sure I got called Quai Jai a lot but just let them vent for a while and they love you was my experience. There's no need for politics here and I am tired of this kind of behaviour these days. Mr Lau is an amzing and very kind Man and I would have loved working with him.

    These videos are genius first and foremost because what your father shares, his wisdom with food and process, is the hardest stuff to learn: how do you store greens? Why is the water this temperature, why do you massage that marinade in that way? He really has the thousand tiny tips and actions that create delicious food. It looks simple. There are so many things that one learns watching him that aren’t so obvious. Kudos to him and you.

In this field, we know cooking seems intimidating to a lot of people or things that seem simple to us is stuff others may not think of, and enjoy sharing the knowledge rather than being stuck up and pretentious. Maybe learn to keep your attitude in check, you're the one who comes off as a child.

    True comfort food here! When I was in junior high, washing and cooking bok choy was one of the first things my parents taught me to do as a chore in the kitchen, after washing the rice and turning the rice cooker on. I still remember my Dad teaching me how to rub each stalk to get the dirt off and how he taught me to use my finger to measure the water for the rice cooker. Thanks for showing us such a comforting bok choy recipe that is so simple to make! I will make this as soon as I get my hands on some more bok choy!

    Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for allowing your dad to do his instructions in Cantonese with English subtitles. My parents only spoke English around me growing up, to help me fit in better in Canada, but as a result, I don't know how to speak my mother tongue. I'm trying to learn more about my heritage, and your channel lets me practice both language and food. It means the world to me to have this stepping stone. Please keep up what you and your family do.

      I understand, and I feel you. I'm Filipino and Chinese. I used to be bilingual as a child. I spoke both English and Tagalog, the language of the Philippines. But when I moved to America, my parents no longer enforced Tagalog to me. Tragically, I can no longer speak it, but I can understand it. Now that I'm an adult, I know I can relearn it. But unfortunately, I never knew my Chinese side of the family because they were never part of my life. Despite being Filipino and Chinese, I have always looked more Chinese to most people, so it disappoints them when they learn this. The funny thing about being Asian, however, is that we share a lot of our foods. We have our own take on dishes. It doesn't matter where you're from, more than likely, we eat from each other's cuisine. I was not taught by my relatives how to cook. They are not willing or are very good teachers I admit. But I have the initiative and I am ever so thankful the people as genuine as the Lau family share their teachings. Know you're not alone and we are all rooting for you! This cheered me up by the way, so thank you for sharing.

    I've been living away from my Cantonese parents for nearly 7 years now, and only eating my childhood meals when I visit once or twice a year. I can't thank you enough for this video. I used to have this all the time growing up, and I want to make this (and a lot of other recipes your dad has shown us) for my parents one day soon and pass it down to my kids.
    My parents actually also own a Canto/Viet restaurant in a small city in Canada, but never had the time to teach me how to make food! I was a "restaurant kid" too! Both my mom and dad work long long hours and are too tired to teach these things growing up (and even now). Maybe when they decide to retire I will finally learn (and they can finally take some time for themselves).

    This is the best thing I've ever ate. The bok choy is how I dream vegetables should taste. The pork was the most tender I've had. My husband and I are trained in acupuncture and know that winter is time for soups, but our kids don't like them much. I decided to make some just for us and this was wonderful. You can taste your years of wisdom in cooking. I feel nourished and fulfilled, so does my husband. So simple and easy for a late night meal.

    Fifty years ago, I always ordered this soup when my family went to our local Chinese restaurant (we lived near the what is now China town in Mississauga, Ontario). My siblings went for the sweet & sour stuff, but I loved this soup with its simple & flavorful ingredients. I have never seen it on a menu since then. So thank you for the recipe.

    I love to cook. I've been trying little by little to cook my favorite Chinese dishes over the years, but this is finally the first time I feel like I've found the right teacher. Everything I've made of your Dad's has been wonderful. My next door neighbor who is Chinese-American has said my beef broccoli is just like his mom used to make. I'm making bok choy soup again tonight. My wife and I both love it. I envy you growing up with that mom and dad of yours. Beautiful people.

    Absolutely delicious and comforting to the soul! Ever since I've come across this recipe I've made it many times and my husband and I both love it! we actually just had it for dinner today as well.     this is we called "clean soup" it means simple ingredient took a short time to be done. then we have a "old flame soup" that could took up to 4-5 hours and usually the the ingredeint is way more complex. for me i love both, sometime my mom have no time foe the old flame one then she go for the clean soup. its still very healthy soup.

    Could you move the camera closer to the meat when it explained about how to cut the meat horizontally/vertically/diagonally against the direction of the grain ‘cause it’s a bit to understand without seeing the grains closely. Thanks

      The good thing is a random cut will most likely be across the grain albeit likely diagonally, there would be only one, well two ways you would wind up going along the grain. If I was uncertain, I would quarter the meat in a cross then look at the cut ends of the meat to see which cuts more fibers in case one of the cuts is unfortunately along the grain.
