@AussieMark909, You'd be "pumping" too if you were doing an 8-ball every hour, on the hour, like all the members of Fleetwood Mac were doing back in 79'. LOL.
The Chain remained in tact until the sad passing of Christine McVie . A great song performed by 5 great musicians , a great band . R.I..P Christine McVie
Mick and Lindsay, especially, just get so into this performance that I can't stop watching it. The entire band are playing off each other's cues. Watching Mick is like watching a man possessed, his face says it all. Then the bass kicks up and I'm lost in it.
That’d be the cocaine. In all seriousness, given how high voltage this performance looks some 45 years later filmed through the equivalent of a potato, I’m surprised it didn’t overload said potato on the spot and deprive future generations of this magnificence.
After over 70 years of listening, I'm thinking that Mick Fleetwood is the greatest rock and roll drummer ever. What energy, what back beat, what personality! I'm I wrong?

Always considered this their best song. I’m still very shaken by the loss of Christine McVie. The ability to overcome all the strife time, and time again is what truly made me respect the band. I had a group of friends that I always thought of regarding this song, but The Chain has been broken which makes listening to the song even more difficult. R.I.P. Christine, and carry on Fleetwood Mac.
Always keep in mind that our media in all of its forms has now become the number one enemy of this country. All of it is controlled by the democrats and the Chinese Communist Party. (they are in bed with each other on everything)

My girlfriend and I saw Fleetwood Mac in Sydney Feb 1980. Tusk tour. We have always loved this band. We will never tire of their incredible music. Saw them again a couple of years ago. They are still amazing live. Lindsay is in my book one of the greatest guitarists going around. This song is one of their best. A lot of love and some hate, mixed with drugs and money, wrapped up in pure passion for their art. You can't just write stuff like this. You have to live, feel and breathe it.
I was there with ya in 1980! Australian folk I met there then and later on are some of the greatest folks I’ve had the pleasure of meeting and knowing!!! 💝💝💝
+mrkentucky03 What made it incredible? It was the start of disco and Donna Summer. It was the year that excess was out of control, Jimmy Carter fucking up the Iranian Hostage Crisis and, cocaine began destroying lives. Not such an incredible year.
The song has an almost operatic quality to it, what with the internal conversations going on during it. One aspect of this song hasn’t even been alluded to in any of these comments - John McVie’s bass solo. Sounds like thunder coming down from the heavens. It carries the entire last two minutes of the song. After the guitar comes back in John just goes into full beast mode. If anyone in Fleetwood Mac could be considered underrated, it’s Mr. McVie. He and Mick are the glue that have kept this band going all these years. I’m proud to call John my first bass teacher. I can’t read a note of music, but I learned to play by playing along with “Rumours”. At one point or another, bands I’ve played in over the past 45+ years have played every single song on the album plus “Silver Springs”. I’ve JUST ABOUT got it right after all this time. It should also be noted that McVie is playing a one-of-a-kind Alembic Series I fretless bass with a stainless steel fretboard.
Lindsey's solo is one of the greatest rock n' roll solos ever, and yet it only shows a small fraction of his technical facility on the instrument. It is the PERFECT solo for the song. He could have gone off on some great soloing tangent, and it would've been good, but he plays here to serve the song.
The Chain, timeless and classic and will never be replicated or duplicated. A 1st class work of art 🎉🎉. An amazing Masterpiece by an iconic group and with unique style and amazing songwriting 🎉🎉
Incredible performance- in a deafening crowd. The bass tone in the second half is hypnotic, the groove is so compelling... can almost taste it A kind of mystical experience
Rest in Peace, Christine McVie. I can’t stop crying, and I think I shed a tear for every time their music gave me happiness and soothed my soul when I was sad. Ty
Now, there was a witch, a warlock, a wizard, a sorcerer and a pound of uncut cocaine in a mystical gold snuff box..... Then the music began...and it sounded like this....
This is one of the performances where, despite the relatively poor audio quality, I will take this live version over the studio version any day of the week.
Working his butt off to keep the fast paced beat going that is - along with the (percussion) acrobatics that made playing this all the more complex & challenging. Not that he didn't enjoy himself, I'm sure he did, but it was above all a "LABOR of love" to be in his shoes here.
Sara sarc nah that’s just Mick. He’s always got that stoned-out-of-his-fucking-mind look when he plays. Watch Chain and Gold Dust Woman during the “On With The Show” tour and you’ll see.

If you read Stephen Davis’s book Gold Dust Woman the biography of Stevie Nicks you get a complete window into how deeply and dedicated all of the members of Fleetwood Mac were into music. They all lived and breathed instruments , harmonies and song lyrics from before they left school. When that comes together as a group, you get this, perfection.
rock history at it's absolute peak. my thought has always been that any chain is only as strong as it's weakest link.. and look at the strength and endurance of what you're listening to right now.....
Lindsey Buckingham was rated as #100 of the greatest guitarists ever by Rolling Stone magazine. I'd put him above at least 90 of the others they listed - and he often sang lead besides!
I always rated Lindsey one of the best. No one else at the time played as he did. They tried to replace him with 2 guitarists and it did not work. That was how good he was(and still is if you watch him and Stevie on Letterman in '09).
i’m 18 years old and i envy older people who got to live during this time and experience this type of art. They don’t make music like this nowadays , i can’t even imagine the adrenaline you got when you first heard that bass solo back in 77’ on the radio. Must’ve been insane
It kills me how Stevie is so confused and concerned about Lindsey's aggressively passionate singing and guitar playing. She is like "oh no he did too much in the backstage here we go"
Is this song specifically about those two? I'm too young to remember - or more accurately I didn't exist for another 10 years after this! Makes me laugh how certain ppl are joking about cocaine, the bands use and even their own use, yet they wouldn't dream of letting modern youth near it!
@@mid.life.crisis2955 All members of the band contributed to the song, Christine also broke up with John during this time - add alcohol, tempestuous emotions - no wonder the song is so good.
@@mid.life.crisis2955Well, the thing about that is cocaine back then was just cocaine. The sound system can barely take the sound of the crowd going crazy. Great song. Love the Angel live video from that same year. Love nearly anything with Lindsay and Christine together on vocals. All three on chorus is velvet heaven.
The Chain is hands down one of the coolest songs that Fleetwood Mac ever did live and it was a "all hands on deck" type of effort because the song started out as a Stevie Nicks lyric. But that only tells half the story. Lindsey Buckingham was a tyrant in the studio, a bit OCD when it came to being a producer of Fleetwood Mac in the studio. The Rhythm section of Mick Fleetwood and John McVie really are a huge part of that song! And live it was a total group effort. Christine McVie, Stevie Nicks, and Lindsey Buckingham are in synch with their vocal harmony too!
The irony is that if the personal lives of the members hadn't been as fucked up as they had been at crucial points in the group's history they wouldn't have had the core of material to draw from. All of the pain, drama and as was opined by another the drugs were what made the band so interesting! As I said earlier Lindsey was a total dock in the studio. Completely OCD tyrant when it came to what he wanted. Stevie said they couldn't stand to be in the studio at the same time that they operated through the engineer what each needed from the other. To say the least it was a very dysfunctional way to cut an album. The men got on quite well but the men and the women! Oy gavault! Zeit ist mashugna!
There also needs to be some recognition that he appears to have invented or anticipated the 80s aesthetic in 1979. From full on hippie afro in 76 to yuppie suit-and-open-neck-shirt.

The Chain remained in tact until the sad passing of Christine McVie . A great song performed by 5 great musicians , a great band .
R.I..P Christine McVie
Amen. Thank you Christine. Youre the songbird. Fly home.

It's called a "soul tie"...that's "The Chain"...
Oh those harmonies! And can we finally give John McVie some props for his AMAZING bass lines?
The power of the harmonies.
Pretty sure everyone has always acknowledged this bassline.
the bass is 100% the best part in this song for me. And I believe this is their best as well.
This is probably the most vicious bass version of this song that I've heard.
RIP CHRISSIE. You will be sadly missed. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for the joyous music you gave to not only me but the UNIVERSE!!

Nothing like Fleetwood Mac ever was or ever will be.The fact that no one even attempted to imitate their music is huge.
beausgirllayton: You are absolutely right. I can't think of too many covers of FM songs that got anywhere. Hard to replicate genius.
Smashing Pumpkins take on Landslide is pretty damn good I have to admit.
I've been listening to FM for over 40 years, always new songs and new ways to preform their songs to make them even more exciting.
There have been some low points in my life, depression, divorce, separation and Vietnam and I can say for a fact that FM has saved my sanity and my life. They give me hope and the knowledge that some good things endure forever.

I've decided the bassline at towards the end of this song is one of the greatest in all of Rock N Roll history
Good decision
Me too
Yes will always be remembered for F1 , great song by a great band .🇬🇧🏎
Mhmmm. Okay it is soooo 👍
LEGENDARY! One of the great bass lines in R&R history.
Lindsey Buckingham may really be that one guitarist that everybody calls the most underrated ever.
And they would be right this time.
Yep, either him or Alex Lifeson.
He is okay… average level. But a good singer.
@@gowwar491 I agree, average guitarist
No member of Mac is underrated.
Lindsey's solo is one of the greatest rock n' roll solos ever, and yet it only shows a small fraction of his technical facility on the instrument. It is the PERFECT solo for the song. He could have gone off on some great soloing tangent, and it would've been good, but he plays here to serve the song.
THAT is what makes him one of the greats. He often "speaks softly but carries a big stick" musically, by exercising restraint.
Lindsey was a son of a bitch friend to Stevie. I'm still trying to figure out why he abused her

This is one of the performances where, despite the relatively poor audio quality, I will take this live version over the studio version any day of the week.
That drummer is having the time of his life!!
The drummer is Mick Fleetwood, just so you know.

The base in the song is amazing.

Lindsey Buckingham was rated as #100 of the greatest guitarists ever by Rolling Stone magazine. I'd put him above at least 90 of the others they listed - and he often sang lead besides!
Ke Mac SEVERELY under rated.
Lynyrd Skynyrd's 70's band has the best guitarists.
I always rated Lindsey one of the best. No one else at the time played as he did. They tried to replace him with 2 guitarists and it did not work. That was how good he was(and still is if you watch him and Stevie on Letterman in '09).

I keep coming back to this video. Has to be one of the best live performances of all time.
The sound system can barely take the sound of the crowd going crazy. Great song. Love the Angel live video from that same year. Love nearly anything with Lindsay and Christine together on vocals. All three on chorus is velvet heaven.
The Chain is hands down one of the coolest songs that Fleetwood Mac ever did live and it was a "all hands on deck"
type of effort because the song started out as a Stevie Nicks
lyric. But that only tells half the story. Lindsey Buckingham was
a tyrant in the studio, a bit OCD when it came to being a producer
of Fleetwood Mac in the studio. The Rhythm section of Mick Fleetwood and John McVie really are a huge part of that song!
And live it was a total group effort. Christine McVie, Stevie Nicks,
and Lindsey Buckingham are in synch with their vocal harmony too!
Oy gavault! Zeit
ist mashugna!
RIP Christine. You sang like an angel.
