  • Al Di Meola sits down for a One On One Session at his Studio in Old Tappan, NJ on July 18th, 2020. For more info visit: www.aldimeola.com Audio & Video by: Ehud Lazin Audio Mixing and Mastering: Dori Chen-Roberts
Al Di Meola's ongoing fascination with complex rhythmic syncopation combined with provocative lyrical melodies and sophisticated harmony has been at the heart of his music throughout a celebrated career that has spanned four decades and earned him critical accolades, three gold albums and more than six million in record sales worldwide. A bona fide guitar hero, perennial poll-winner, and prolific composer, he has amassed over 20 albums as a leader while collaborating on a dozen or so others with the likes of the fusion supergroup Return to Forever (with Chick Corea, Stanley Clarke and Lenny White), the celebrated acoustic Guitar Trio featuring fellow virtuosos John McLaughlin and Paco de Lucia, and the Rite of Strings trio with bassist Clarke and violinist Jean-Luc Ponty. And while his dazzling technique on both acoustic and electric guitars has afforded him regal status among the hordes of fretboard fanatics who regularly flock to his concerts, the depth of Di Meola's writing along with the soulfulness and the inherent lyricism of his guitaristic expression have won him legions of fans worldwide beyond the guitar aficionado set.
A pioneer of blending world music and jazz, going back to early Latin-tinged fusion outings like 1976's Land of the Midnight Sun, 1977's Elegant Gypsy and 1978's Casino, the guitar great continues to explore the rich influence of flamenco, tango, Middle Eastern, Brazilian and African music with his World Sinfonia, an ambitious pan-global group that he formed in 1991. Their exhilarating world music fusion has been documented on such releases as 2000’s The Grande Passion (featuring the Toronto Symphony Orchestra), 2007’s Live in London, 2011’s Pursuit of Radical Rhapsody and the stunning 2012 DVD, Morocco Fantasia (recorded at the Mawazine Festival in Rabat, Morocco and featuring special guests Said Chraibi on oud, Abdellah Meri on violin and Tari Ben Ali on percussion).
His earliest role models in jazz included guitarists Tal Farlow and Kenny Burrell. But when he discovered Larry Coryell, whom Al would later dub “The Godfather of Fusion,” he was taken with the guitarist's unprecedented blending of jazz, blues and rock into one seamless vocabulary on the instrument. “I used to ride the bus from New Jersey to see him at little clubs in Greenwich Village,” he recalls. “Wherever he was playing, I'd be there.” In 1972, Al enrolled at the Berklee College of Music in Boston and by the second semester there began playing in a fusion quartet led by keyboardist Barry Miles. When a gig tape of that band was later passed on to Chick Corea by a friend of Al's in 1974, the 19-year-old guitarist was tapped to join Corea’s fusion supergroup Return to Forever as a replacement for guitarist Bill Connors. After three landmark recordings with Return to Forever -- 1974's Where Have I Known You Before, 1975's Grammy Award winning No Mystery and 1976's Romantic Warrior -- the group disbanded and Al subsequently started up his career as a solo artist. His 1976 debut as a leader, Land of the Midnight Sun, was a blazing showcase of his signature chops and Latintinged compositions that featured a stellar cast including drummers Steve Gadd and Lenny White, bassist Anthony Jackson and Jaco Pastorius, keyboardists Jan Hammer, Barry Miles and Chick Corea and percussionist Mingo Lewis. Over the course of six more albums with Columbia Records - Elegant Gypsy, Casino, Splendido Hotel, Electric Rendezvous, Tour De Force and Scenario - Al established himself as an influential force in contemporary music. 1980 marked the triumph of the acoustic guitar trio with Paco De Lucia and John McLaughlin. Their debut recording on Columbia Records, Friday Night in San Francisco, became a landmark recording that surpassed the four million mark in sales. The following year, 1981, Di Meola was inducted into Guitar Player’s Gallery of Greats after five consecutive wins as Best Jazz Guitarist in the magazine’s Readers Poll and winning best album and acoustic guitarist for a total of a record eleven wins. The three virtuosos in the trio toured together from 1980 through 1983, releasing the studio album Passion, Grace & Fire in 1982. In 1995, they reunited for a third recording, Guitar Trio, follow by another triumphant world tour.

Beautiful tone and he breathes new life into one of my favorite Beatles tunes with this slightly flamencoesque interpretation.

Totally agree - and the brooding darkness implicit in the original is preserved.
It's interesting to me that if you look at the Rubber Soul album carefully the themes are quite dark - cynical love-for-money ; infidelity ; a failed relationship; modern alienation - and that's just the first four tracks. Yes we have "The Word" but the treatment is far from lyrical... and side 2 has meditations on mortality (In My Life) and finishes with a song about potential abuse!
The Beatles kind of sweetened the pill (that was part of their collective genius) but Rubber Soul definitely has a sense of ambivalence about it. This is very much reflected in a fascinating album of covers of the album called Rubber Folk. ua-cam.com/play/OLAK5uy_m8yibqYZs-wjSQ62ctJ5_TPqXrNbQykZo.html

Los 3 que pusieron un pulgar abajo al momento de escuchar al gran maestro Di Meola deberían tener la oportunidad de volver a nacer y así poder desarrollar el buen gusto, algo que evidentemente carecen por completo.

I always loved Al's playing. first time I heard him was in 1974. Stanley Clark put out his first album back in the day. RTF blew me away!! I bought a tape back in 1983 and I still have it. I was in Mexico and I just kept going back and playing my nylon string guitar. made in Mexico.. hand made! I bought the guitar off a guy for 120 USD. the thing has brass frets and the sound is awesome. I have 9 guitars and they lay in the cradle and wait for me to play them. I sold off a lot of my guitars but I have too many still!! LOL play on...😎

His sound on this Conde Hermanos is so nice. Without looking it seems like two guitars at once in some places. Spicy and warm.

If I could choose a "dream collaboration" on one song, I'd pick this song with Al Di Meola, Tommy Emmanuel and Ritchie Blackmore.

The resonance provided by $1-5 million worth of acoustic guitars sitting around, screaming, "pick me" definitely helps.

@OneonOne Brilliant man mind music and external open lol great stories and kind and humorous lastly human.
The story he shard about it his wife? She and I were laughing she and I looked at each other and both started, wouldn't you do that? I don't care who anyone is even McCartney. We smiled, giggling ( I was again tg for black sunglasses script) and boy did she and I agree on so much, I felt alive refreshed. Neither of us care who another icon is lol or anyone for that matter lol 😆 it doesn't impress us. We'd do that in a second for the right person persons. This blew my mind as it's were I decided I'd get a place away from the world get a little writing finished bring .... I'm going too get some work done in the Hamptons myself as well as oversea. Truly Only in the Hamptons would that honestly go down. Lol 😆 great as always. Ding dong Mr McCartney my husband doesn't want you to realize who he is. This is the cd he told you he was working in , enjoy have a great day. 😆 🤣 😂
Julian, I shared what you said and he said this was most remarkable he'd ever heard it or been able too. Di Meola again. This Saturday night was mind blowing.
You honestly never know whoes watching or who another person could be. Thank you for bringing me husband from back from the grave even for a few minutes. Al's wife and I just completely, accidentally met for the first time as usual it happens again.
We said hello spoke about mutual people etc we no and other thing's.
Than I had suddenly spilled my guts in uncontrollable tears sharing to her (about everything EVEN hidden musicians he need to meet play with, I'm always thinking about other's . That's about to stop) everything hide nothing regarding music Her husband and the truth what happened to Craig as no one ever or did explain. He was 29 I was 25 or turning 26 years old. The 90’s were hard enough touring, living hell for the first middle . Working , being friends with many amazing gone. But 01/03/ 94? That was it
I explained Craig would say Al's my medicine,he played 247 365 day's a year from our house, places and vehicles. Byhond smart music that medicin. Just Di Meola (Chick, Paco). Al's wife grabbed me we held each other extremely tightly (as I watched my poor sister in law sick in tears, my nice whoes 9 never met her uncle started even crying my father in law felt bad, no I said please don't). Yes finally no more wrestling, Craig sadly passed away. We than had all we're speaking. I said he was
Discovered by Less Paul at 14 accidentally (just like Di Meola states later on) my husband found Al through Chick Cora which is how Al came to be. He attended every single show all over. Paco as well only the 3. Al played not only this personal Beatles song to mean, more and so intensity my eye's busted out in tears Al went to town playing and byhond. I never in my life, have I seen heart hard core playing or ever felt everything I did that moment. I can't thank this amazing funny man I mean funny Di Meolas more than talented his funny stories 😄 and his amazing wife. Now slowly formed the beginning of a kind new amazing friendship. I will take my time on what I express and write about they intir story but yet still thank you will never be enough.
We all felt my husbands present there from each thing that happened. It took me to finally to be able too see, hear (now amazing thing's on the horizon) look even over hear all thoes ,but Al? That's simply the biggest reason music person (less as well) Al's music kept his Guinness brain happy claim we both living life amazingly. He was playing with the biggest and best in his own rights, until he sadly ended the battle. I blamed myself way to long due to something said long ago and neither of the three of us think to grab any Di Meola cd.
You honestly all have no idea how amazing and fascinating intensity Di Meola played Norwegian wood and more Saturday night. Finally we met again and as painful it was healing. Now love his whole family. Di Meola happens to be the best guitar player in the world industry. It's even written he is. Btw still Al thank's for being my prenuptial we all laughed at this one. My husband changed our first dance wedding song to one of Al's . I didn't even know about Al or what was going on. But my husband whispered in my ear that's Al Di Meola, if you don't learn to love him? This marriage isn't going too work. Lol 😆 🤣 I thanked him for that. Di Meola busted out laughing as well as his wife and friends all said That's a prenuptial that 🤣 😂 should be in everyone's wedding requirement. Thank you for everything Al the tears release relief and everything else personal that happened. Two women are definitely not losing touch. Another chapter or book just added. This is amazing what he did with so many battles tunes. If you can see Di Meola I highly recommend it. I honestly had to write everything

If you just listen to it (without watching the video) you will realize he makes a lot of mistakes on this performance. Also accents are not quite precise. None the less, the arrangement is absolutely beautiful. I just wish he could execute better his own arrangements. The song and the arrangement itself deserves it.
