  • "The Beatles were huge for me. Without them, I don't know if I even would have become a musician or a guitar player. When their hits started coming out, I was 8 and 9 years old and it had a tremendous impact on me. I saw the movie "A Hard Day's Night" multiple times when it came out and I always loved that song. It is kind of impossible to imagine doing a record like this without including at least one Beatles song." - Pat Metheny

    My mother was into the Big Band era, Glenn Miller, Dorsey, Goodman, etc... but every once in a while, she could tolerate some newer music. She didn't like Rock & Roll at all, but she liked some softer stuff. I came across this video in 2014, and I asked her to listen to it ( I was her caregiver by then). She was skeptical when I said it was a guitar rendition, but she let me play it. It absolutely melted her heart. She died about a month later sadly, but I was glad she got to experience a different type of music and was able to enjoy it. Miss you, Mom.

      I often record acoustic guitar with a mic on the bridge and 12th fret. Gives a nicer stereo feed between a brighter and fatter sound.
      As for the more distant mic, that picks up room ambience and is probably the reason this sounds so reverberant.

    When Pat Metheny was still in a Junior in High School, he attended the Midwestern music and Art Camp in Lawrence, KS, stayed in one of the Daisy Hill dormitories there. I was the Resident Counselor for the wing of the Hall he lived in. His remarkable talent was obvious to all the other kids his age in our wing and his fame grew all over the Campus. He was a lively, but a little ornery, outgoing and had quite a 'big' personality that won you over quickly. I hardly saw him in the Hall, because he was always somewhere else, no doubt dazzling other kids his age with his talent - and probably also he spent time with the instructors there at the Camp.
    I have always been secretly proud that he "was one of my kids" that summer many years ago. After that I watched his fame and renown only grow along with his talent. I hope I was able to be a good role model for him at that time in his young life.
    One other thing, he was one of the most handsome kids around the Camp. And I'm sure he could charm the socks off the silly little junior high girls - all atwitter.
    I am late in saying this, but "Congratulations, Pat, for your success and for your well-lived life. May you live with your due fame always following you and with a career as long as have Mick Jagger and Paul McCartney had!"

      You will find, by and large, most successful people have that certain "je ne sais quois" you've described knowing in Pat. I'm a long-time fan, and an avid reader of his history.. Over the years I've squired an 'earnest feeling' about what kind of person he might have been in parallel to his unmatched musicianship.. My "research" dates back to the mid-80's when I once saw Danny Gotlieb and Mark Egan do a clinic at E.U. Wurlitzer in Boston MA, where Danny G anecdotally spoke of his own experience working with Pat in the very early days. And according to both men, he WAS ornery-- to use your word.
      Last, I think in order to make it in any business, one may not need to be ornery, but one certainly does need a "big" personality--and that can be taken any way you like, but the fact remains, 'You Gotta Take It' to quote one, Jack Nicholson during his opening narrative at the start of The Departed.

    • @alannreeder7700
      @alannreeder7700 8 років тому +5

      Thank you for your comment. I used the word "ornery" because I couldn't quite come up with a word that exactly described his youthful behavior. He was self-confident; out-going; effervescent; had a magnetic personality none could ignore. Plus, of course, he was a genius; and I mean that not just in music, but in other aspects of life - as oftentimes goes along with people of genius as well.
      I can't way I knew him deeply, but I do feel I can say that he had depth, in his personality, his devotion to his music, his care for others, and his ability to "navigate the world" ahead of him. I think he knew he was bound for fame and prepared himself properly to accommodate to that future.
      He, of course, also had the good luck of being a very handsome young man, with quite a following of groupie girls!

    • @nmcg2587

      @@katy8334 I think you and sully are talking about the same thing. McCartney gave credit to Harrison for the riff which "made" the song what it is. Harrison was undoubtedly inspired by the melody and that riff gave the song the hook/backbone it needed to make it an A-lister.

    The fact you heard George's guitar part featured so prominently in all the covers and helps make this song what it is, shows how he should of gotten a writing credit for this song.

    • @gbwildlifeuk8269
      @gbwildlifeuk8269 2 роки тому +1

      He didnt receive a writing credit because he didnt write it. When the credit, "written by" appears, (in this case Lennon and McCartney,) it refers to the lyrics not the musical score. It's extremely rare for credits such as, "guitar riff by" or "piano by" on credit lines.
      That said McCartney is noted for verbally mentioning it to the beatles publisher Dick James.
      " According to James, Lennon called for a break and "within half an hour [Lennon and McCartney] wrote ... a very constructive middle to a very commercial song." McCartney, on the other hand, maintains that "the middle eight is mine ... I wrote this on my own. I would say that John probably helped with the middle eight, but he can't say 'It's mine'." McCartney has credited George Harrison with composing the signature guitar riff, saying it "made a stunning difference to the song". Source: Wikipedia

    There's something very bizarrely comforting about hearing Pat breathing here. Often when you're listen to performances of songs, or the songs themselves, you can forget that human beings, having a human experience, wrote and recorded them, and were doing something as obvious as breathing the entire time. Arguably, the best music of all time has that effect. It's somewhere between alienating and understanding. Just hearing the struggle between human and instrument, and the tug of war that goes into making a song happen live, and the irregular, heavy breathing reminds us what we are capable of if we really apply ourselves. We're human beings just the exact same as Pat Metheny, hard as that might be to believe.

      true love is the most valuable thing one can experience in life. of all complex things that can evolve in the universe, like galaxies, stars, neutron stars, planets, life, flora, fauna, plants, a star system like our solar system, and whatnot, true love is at the very top of all things that can evolve. from this point of view, it is the purpose of the universe, if you understand what I mean. and I found it. my girl and I are a couple for 36 years now. true love increases by the way. it never hurts and is forever.

    A valuable lesson here: you can be one the best guitarists in the world - and still, it is the feeling that counts, Pat plays some pretty basic lines here, BUT every note is played like his life depends on it and the result is breathtaking. Very humbling for any guitar player.
