John Nesbitt agreed Downey carried the band at that time Phil and Scott were whacked out of their minds and and Snowy probably would have been doing his laundry than be there
BRIAN DOWNEY IS A GOD!!! If u go back and listen to anything from Black Rose you can see how effective he at working amazing fills in to the beat as well as not undermine the awesomeness of Scott Gorman and Gary Moore guitars on the album
Whatever you say, I don't hear the audience complaining. Snowy White did a fantastic job, Chinatown and Renegade feature some of the finest harmonies, solos and riffs among the entire Lizzy discography catalog. Too bad he came into the picture once Lynott & Gorham were into heroin. Absolutely underrated guitarist, who needs Moore or Robertson, I insist!
You're either trolling or utterly delusional! Bell, Robbo, Moore and Sykes all smoked Snowy White, in every category of guitar playing. White only got the gig because Phil & Scott were totally fucked up on heroin. White is a blues guitarist, at best. That style normally translates over very well to rock and metal, but White just didn't fit. I liked the songs Renegade, Chinatown and Killer on the Loose. The albums though were weak as piss, overall. Black spots on an otherwise excellent discography. Live in concert, White was dull as ditch-water. Boring solos and no movement, no interaction with the audience. Just nothing. It nearly killed Thin Lizzy
I agree with you Snowy doesn't fit thin Lizzy, however he's absolutely amazing at what he does in his music! He's such a melodic player and has some really soulful music and such a sweet tone!
Lots of people on here saying how bad this version is and how bad there were Well I bet any one of you would love to have been at a thin lizzy concert to be in the presence of this great band and all the musicians in it I was fortunate enough to have done this through all there line ups and it was always a very special experience Even at the near end , the middle and at the very beginning Thin lizzy
It really does sound like Scott breaks a string at the really fast part ....and there really is no other way to do it without that open g string ...Snowy has a clean sound , but sounds like he is nailing the fast harmony bit ....Gary Moore guitar parts are a tall order .
Gary Moore stated in at least one interview that Gorham never managed to learn that section. It was certainly far faster than anything else he did play.
Desgraciadamente en esa época phil y scot ya tenían problemas con la heroína y se les notaba .Maldito veneno. Rip por phil siempre te estaré agradecido por tu musica
This song was written mostly by Gary Moore and no other guitar player ever came close to playing it as it was written. Add that to the fact that Lynott and Gorham were off their faces and Snowy White would have preferred to be off window cleaning and you've pretty much got it. And as for the ridiculous keyboards loitering in the background! Thank Christ for Brian Downey.
Totally. Agreed with all replies to this comment. Moore had a different technique to the others, resulting in a failure to reproduce his work while off your tits, lol. There's a great version of Gary with Scott on a reunion gig. Brian Robertson also comes out and makes a tit of himself. Dressed like he was when he was 20 and playing like he was when he was on heroin!
@@Pattbonn47 Agree, The reunion version is the best version I have heard, only Gary Moore can play it with the feel and speed required, I liked Robbo at his best too but the reunion tribute gig wasnt his best effort, looked like he was in 2nd gear. Downey never fails to impress, just played better with age....
Just watched the Gary version from a night in Dublin, it sure makes Snowey look like a disinterested guitar player, pity cause he can really play but I think he was in the wrong band here.
Sykes is the only Lizzy guitarist that had the technical prowess to be able to play this song anyway, not including the guys that came along post-Lynott.
@kevycanavan - Hahah! Scott did know it, he was just addicted to smack at the time. Although, his solo during 'Got to Give It Up' in this same gig was awesome.

Damn, I love this band, but this lineup totally messes up the bit at 4:25. It's supposedly an Irish traditional tune called The Mason's Apron, but no other version I've heard of that tune sounds remotely like this is supposed to sound. In any case, when they get to the second part of the tune, it drops into Rakish Paddy, which is one of the best-known Irish tunes of all time, so it's pretty scandalous that these boys never bothered to learn how to play it properly. Neither tune is all that difficult to play.
I don't know where you got the idea that part of the solo is supposed to be the masons apron. If it is I've never heard it. The one I'm familiar with starts with 'Danny Boy' (The Derry Air)
All these complaints overlook one thing - Gary Moore was the best guitarist in the world. Even Micky Schenker (offered a job in Lizzy, fact-finders) might have a job playing this number!
