First Time Learning How to Edge a Lawn with a String Trimmer and Edger

  • I am working with a beginner to show how to edge a lawn with a string trimmer and edger. My wife has never used a weed eater or a stick edger. I show her my lawn edging techniques with both of these tools. Let's just say, it does take a little practice to get the hang of these skills. Be sure to wear protective gear. In my opinion, the stick edger is a little easier to learn. I think it is helpful to learn edging with both tools. Sometimes even if you use a stick edger for sidewalks and driveways, you may want to use a string trimmer to edge around trees or flower beds.

Thanks to you and your lovely wife for this video; I'm an 83 year old lady and am only 5-feet tall and skinny, and learned a lot about using my cheapy-but-relatively-light B&W corded trimmer. For some reason, I have trouble holding the lower handle when trimming or edging;, it's easier for me to hold onto the pole below the handle. The helpful male neighbors always correct me, but I just tell them that they're taller, younger, and stronger, haha. Another note: I find it better if I walk in the direction of the spinning (does that make sense?) so that most of the dust goes behind me. Thanks, y'all are the best.

Thanks for posting this. I appreciate you showing you use it upside down and explained not all trimmers will work upside down. I'll try that next time. I noticed when you bump for line you did this on the lawn vs the drive or walk and that cuts the lawn a little too short. Do you do this because it doesn't eat the bump head up as quickly as if you did on the drive?

I watch a lot of instructional videos and it looks so easy when the pro demos the technique. Then I try it and it doesn't go so well. Now, I'll know what to look out for and when problems no doubt happen anyway that first time I try it, I won't be as likely to give up. Didn't take your wife long at all to get the hang of it. The important thing while learning to edge is to try and manage the height and depth of you blade/string line from the sidewalk. It takes a good amount of eye-hand coordination. Imagine you are "drawing a line" down the edge of the sidewalk and try not to concentrate too far ahead of where you're walking.

2 stroke engines will run upside down no problem. Because the oil is a component of the fuel mix, it gets delivered to the crank and head the same no matter what orientation it's held. 4 stroke engines have the oil in a sump and must be run so gravity keeps the oil there. You likely know this Jason, but for others who don't. Mrs. Creel did good.😉

Please don't tap in the grass. You can gouge it, leave a circle or scalp it to the ground. It is very visible and unsightly. Especially in pristine residential lawns. Tap on the sidewalk, a big rock, stump or something similar.

Some people tell me that when I tap it on the concrete then I'm tearing up the head.

There is nothing in the head to actually tear up. Through normal use it will round off and you will eventually wear out the bottom. It should last you the season and then some. Unless you are weed wacking rip rap. The concrete wont hurt it any.

@@stendecstretcher4983 you do know that those heads are meant to be replaced right? Any landscaping company that's doing that in my lawn would be terminated on the spot.

Love the video! Don’t think that was the best technique to teach a beginner though. Edging backwards is much more efficient in my learning . (For beginners especially).
