- Hey guys. Well, I've finally got my hands on some Tabletop World buildings. After having first seen these things many years ago, and fallen in love with them, I now finally have a small set of my own. *I am not being paid* for this video so what you see is exactly what I think of these without bias. I contacted TTW and asked them if they'd be willing to send me some to review and they were kind enough to send these over all the way from Croatia. I new they were good, and when I was able to get them in my hands I was still stunned at the amount of detail and realism they've packed into these at such a small scale! So much detail in fact that you'd have to be careful not to lose any of it when painting them up.

*DISCLAIMER* These are my first impressions only. Just what I was thinking as I opened these up live, in front of the camera. I hadn't done any research as to how they were made at that point, so all I was doing was trying to figure it out because the quality is so friggen good!
You can see how it all looks glued and individually put together but I'm sure they are a cast of some sort. Would love to be a fly on the wall and see the actual process.

I own their little cottage and a bunch of “market dressings". They blow anything else I have seen out of the water. Their models are so good I’m afraid of painting them. That being said, there’s no way those aren’t single pieces. It’s simply not possible otherwise. Not that it takes anything away from the models.

Gotta get two duplicate buildings to see if they are indeed all glued pieces, but that has always been my impression as well. If they are all just glued pieces, there shouldn't be two that are alike, but just similar.
The fact they are only two people makes it seem like this will be a limited business that won't last many more years, everybody grows tired of gluing cream colored resin pieces-unless they expand and lower prices.
Yes, it is expensive, even for handmade, by lowering prices means they will sell more and can hire more. They seem very stuck on their pricing, but if they are two people only, I understand.
Expensive in that you need 20-30 buildings if you are going to have a town-these are not toys for children, these are for Wargamers.

Their stuff is beyond amazing. I have had the small cottage #1 for about two years now and have still not brought myself to try to paint it. I also have the small water well and a bunch of furniture for the interiors. I almost feel bad painting them, as they look so good just in their raw state. The great thing about these is even if you're not a great painter, you can do some simple drybrushing and keep all that great looking detail underneath and even help some of that texture pop more!

I used to do resin model figures, I can tell by the detail and quality this kit is the same type of resin. Out of the box the house and roof are each a single piece. Nobody sits and glues these tiny pieces onto each individual item the company sells. During the sculpting phase they may have done it that way, but once the mold is made all copies are one piece.
So good, you and Luke Towan are the best on youtube!! Different styles and purposes but when you combine the two, you can make anything you want. Keep up the amazing work, also thank you for teaching me for the last year!

Wow 6! nice work. Yeah I guess they hand cast each to order which is why it takes so long to get them out.
if you are worried about botching the paint job, and don't want to risk the materials staining the resin underneath, I'd suggest sealing the buildings with mr.SuperClear (or MSC, as often refereed to). It's common practice in the doll customising hobby to always seal the resin before adding any paint/pastels in case you mess up, since then you can always just remove the paint without having to worry about staining. Also often using multiple layers of MSC to "save" progress and not have to run the risk of having to do everything all over again, but I know that on tiny details it might negatively affect the sculpted details.

Yeah i know. Apparently they build these from scratch then make molds out of those masters. Here in Croatia we have a small but strong modeling scene. Tabletop world hosts a painting competition (that has to include their models of course). It's pretty pricey for us locals to enter it, but I might give it a go this year since I've improved significantly as a painter lately, and feel like I might actually be able to give these things the paintjob they deserve.

When you said they were expensive, I was expecting them to be a lot more costly than they are. The prices are actually pretty low compared to other resin products I've built (mainly sci-fi ships and such). I am definitely going to consider getting some of these just because they look phenomenal!

awesome buildings. i remember a company that made Ad&d miniatures high quality models boxed great artwork on the cover and background info in the box on the models. and like yourself i expected a huge company. that turned out to be basically 2 static caravans one for modeling and boxing etc office. and one for casting. i was blown away. i can see this detail 3d printed with resin printers. but i still think like many these are cast in a lot of sections. shame you did not ask them when you was talking to the guys how they make them.

Thanks! I've talked with them since and they to make them in casts. they made the originals the way I described by gluing everything together individually to make the masters. But, from there everything is cast in large pieces. They are just crazy complex molds apparently.
Some of the claims in this video are ridiculous, ha! I get it, you're crazy excited about how high quality the model is. But seriously: It's just two guys and they cast and glue in each individual shingle, stone and all the apples in the bucket! ...and yet you can still buy it for only $31.72? Literally, they would go out of business because of waiting times alone.
A quick look at this models roof compared to the one in the photos on their site shows the shingles all look exactly the same as the one in your model, even where there are large gaps. Which proves that it's just a cast. The apples in the bucket look cast too, not stuck in individually. They may cast it in sections to keep the quality high, but those pieces will be much larger than you are suggesting, like maybe 5 to 6 max in the roof section, if that. And honestly, why would they bother wasting their time glueing individual shingles and stones on, or even glueing multiple pieces together, when the market they are selling to loves building stuff. If they are paying someone to glue on each individual shingle, then they could greatly increase their profits on that model simply by creating a build guide and shipping the model deconstructed. Cut's all the massive labour and glue costs, and greatly decreases turn around times for the models. I would still pay thirty dollars for a piece I had to glue together myself and looked that good at the end of it.
A well-detailed review of a great product. Lots of lovely close up shots of the product. Pleasant music and overall production. But the excitement of a child on Christmas morning clearly took over on the commentary. Haha!
Yeah I think if I was part of a 2-man operation I'd make sections to cast (like a row of tiles or fruit separately from the bucket), then glue them together. I mean...unless these guys are just super happy to do all this work even at a serious loss.
lol you make some good points in there. I think you forgot tho I literally was just opening these up, filming it on the spot, and giving my first impression. I didn't do any research or anything at this point and wanted to state exactly what my thoughts were. Make it as authentic as possible. and yeah, definitely was like a child on Christmas!! I'm really into quality and these guys deliver. I'm also crazy impressed with how small the company is and that they're not out just take make the big bucks but have a real serious passion for what they're doing. It takes more than a drive for money to make something of real quality and value. You have to have a passion for what you're doing. These guys have it, and it's obvious in the work they've put in to these things, and i love that. So yeah, no idea how they make them, as I said in the video, just giving my first impressions. @Legend_Nation Gaming he says they're a small group of people from Croatia so I don't think they would do it in China. They seem to be hobbyists as well who love doing what they do

Great looking models. The detail is incredible. Way too often I see something great on one of these channels and when I go check the company out, they are situated on the wrong side of the Atlantic, and postage doubles the price of whatever I wanted to get. Not this time, there is only a bit of Slovenia between me and them, wohoo.

I didn't even know there were companies that made these. I have been crafting diorama buildings with actual wood and clay from smaller than 1:48 up to 1:12 scale for several years. They are so labor intensive to create, it would be a dream to simply buy them ready-made!
I can actually envision how the first one you opened could be made of larger sub-assemblies that are epoxied or glued together after molding. It would not necessarily require the individual casting and gluing of each roof tile. Nonetheless, the detail is great, and all of the greebles help each building tell a story when sitting still.

Real Terrain Hobbies, you mentioned that you're hesitant to start painting these intricate models for fear of messing them up. I've seen your work and feel you have nothing to worry about, but If you're concerned about ruining these intricate models, after sealing (as recommended below), practice with colors on the bottom of the building where errors won't show. Start with thinned paints (acrylic and water, or such) and use light washes. You can then deepen the colors by adding a bit more until you get the color depth you want. (For instance, the shingles could be colored upside-down so they catch more color and will gradually darken the creases.) Dabbing with a paper towel at times will remove some color and roughen the look of the surfaces.
To "paint" these models with a full brush of thick, undiluted paint as one would a wall is a big....BIG... mistake unless you're really good at it. A little wash of color can be deepened to fill in a crevice until it shows a realistic shadow.
I love the way they look unpainted (yes, like white chocolate or Eagle Brand sweetened condensed milk, Yum...) and I would never paint nor color them if I had them. Just a personal preference, not a recommendation. I was an art teacher and have been an artist and model maker most of my life.

There is a gallery section where people have submitted their photo's of their finished painted models and most of them are quite stunning. I agree, I do like theunpainted look as well, but I think painted up these could really look quite spectacular. Thanks again for the great advice!

Well I do have to say they do look great and the pricing is not bad at all.
If I were not color impaired - not good at shading at all. I would give recreating a town in Fable a shot. They even have a cemetary. Very impressed with the detail.

Not sure if the thread is still up, but there used to be a thread on WarSeer where the people behind this worked on their first few buildings, they stopped posting work stuff there, but it was pretty cool with how far they went with them.
Yeah, I found a post from way back when were they posted a picture or their guard tower being assembled of actual wood and stone. Very cool to see and crazy impressive. I'll have to see if I can dig up this thread from WarSeer
I live on a burnt continent amid distant southern oceans where this stuff is hard to get...yet I was lucky enough few years ago to find the cottage & coaching inn locally at an "old stock" price (shocked me too...but it appeared to be old stock they wanted to get rid of). Pretty glad I have any at all.

I have a few of them. All are awesome! Not just incredible details, but also great resin. I only had to clean the resin with water and cleaner/ soap. The only downside is the scale and the prize. The scale of most of their builds is a little too small if you want to play Warhammer / AOS or a similar game. Only some of the new buildings are in the heroic scale of Warhammer but they are very expensive. But don´t get me wrong, i think they are worth it!

Greetings! Ah, good to know. Yeah judging by their kickstarter they a planning on possibly releasing a few more at heroic scale. I didnt realise 40K was heroic scale actually. I dont currently play it but possibly plan to get into it a at some point. Which buildings do you have?
@@RealTerrainHobbies I have the cottage, the townhouse, the wind mill, the blacksmith forge, the stone bridge, the townhouse III and the old merchant house. All of them are great, but the old merchant house was a little more difficult to build because the roof consists of several parts.
Actually the old fantasy buildings of forgeworld fit perfectly to the older tabletop world buildings. If you find any...
Injection molding process is very detailed oriented.
Yeah I should look it up because I still cant wrap my head around how they get such good detail. Can you reuse molds multiple times or do you need to remake a new mold for each cast? Seems like the mold would get destroyed after pulling it apart with all those tiny nooks and cranny's.
I was only just looking at these 3 buildings online yesterday. I may have to treat myself to one of them for Christmas, when I have some time off work, to do them justice. I’m a little bit intimidated by the interiors though. Look forward to seeing what you do with them 👍🏻

Real Terrain Hobbies. To be honest I haven’t played any game since I played Hero Quest, years ago. I just love terrain building and anything Tolkien related. And yes I’m sure that if I picked up a few pieces from Tabletop World I would be blown away by the detail, they do look very nice.
how long does this masterpiece last? I mean, does the colors fade eventually or anything. Thanks, such an inspiration.
im super happy you reviewing their stuff, i love seeing tabletop world but damn man your high if you think its all assembled tiny part by tiny part...thats something im sure they do for the MASTER not every cast thats just nuts
haha I know. But you saw the closeups right on how they look individually glued/fused in place? I was just thinking out loud and was quite excited by the quality. I've spoken/emailed with them since I completed this video and they do indeed for the originals but then these are just done in really complex casts to get all that detail out. And there is literally no flashing leftover on anything so it's really hard to tell they are casts. Anyway, thanks for the feedback!

I have many of their buildings, and they are amazing and a joy to paint. However, I cannot believe that they are "hand build" piece by piece.
You are correct! They are casts, done by hand to order.
I just ordered my first two cottages, im going to build off the quest in dragon age where the entire town disappears over night into a dungeon under the town. Im going to use dwarven forge for the underground bits
The fact this is produced by a small team, incredibly detailed, and still cheaper than a small set of Space Marines that are mass-produced...

1) I wish they would up scale it to like 35mm so you can use it for wargaming and actually get miniatures inside. 2) I wish the door opened and the windows were clear so you can see the detail inside. While the food basket and other parts are great, I wish they were not glued on so I could more easily paint those items. Other than that, they are amazingly detailed.
For your first point, they've started a line of products at 32mm. Right now they have a kickstarter going for new stables in this scale and they already have an amazing merchant building thats been out for a bit in 32mm. It sounds like they'll be continuing to add more to this line. 2) haha, this new line also has doors and windows that open. Check out that merchant shop! And I agree, painting the food and baskets on the one building will be difficult. They do sell those as separate accessories along with a bunch of other grain sacks etc as well. bit.ly/Table-Top-World
@@RealTerrainHobbies If I could just chime in here, I'm really tempted to start collecting these but wondering if I were to actually use them for "Age of Sigmar" if the minis would even fit. Maybe, Real Terrain Hobbies, could you tell me what you play using these if anything? When you did the massive and at that the amazing build of some of their other stuff, I did notice you had a lot of minis all over the place as well.
They build the master from stone they've cut and shaped. I'm assuming the shingles are all individually cut from some material... stone as well, maybe? I'm not sure about the wood pieces. Their sculpting of the other times is fantastic. Once the master is made they begin figuring out how to cast it...though, with all their experience they probably have that mostly sorted out. Due to the detail I imagine that they go through a lot of molds since they probably don't last too long.
Yeah you're exactly right. They made the masters with stone and wood. Not sure about the wooden shingles and some other parts, but they are casts for sure.
They just put up a Kickstarter for an amazing stable. It's even more amazing than their previous stuff. Are you sure that it isn't SLA 3d printed? Formlabs and a few other SLA 3d printers can easily output that quality with zero evidence of it being a print. They also use similar resins to what would be used in casting parts. The printing would give the same affect as gluing it all together as individual pcs.
Interesting... Well they've been making these since 2009, a lot of the models are still cast from the same masters they made up back them. But yeah, the info I got from them is that they are all cast with really complex molds. What do one of thos SLA 3D printers go for? Probably crazy, but it would be awesome to grab one some day if they're as detailed as you say.
@@RealTerrainHobbies They now start from 250 but go in the thousands. Miniature printing at home is now a reality, but larger pieces would require buying a SLA printer with a huge printing size... those are in the thousands of dollars.
3D printing such things is a giant waste of time money and resources. You would only do that for single-digit productions.
One way to utilise printing would just to print a master-model, touch it up and then generate the moulds from that.
@@ABaumstumpf That makes actual sense. The idea of assembling each one by hand is mind boggling. But it would be near impossible to get some of those details on 5 sides of a 3d object from molds, from what I've seen of molds. I'm no where near an expert, though, not even amateur. Hands down, these are the most impressive pieces I have ever seen, IMO.
I love good craftsmanship! After watching your clip, I visited their shop, where they clearly state that the glue each stone in their buildings individually. So, feel good about your excitement during your filming - I agree with you, no quick-buck mass production going on here! Why is it so hard for people to believe that true artists place quality and pride in their work above profit? Thanks to your enjoyment and enthusiasm you have a new subscriber!

The cost of living (and production) in Croatia must be very low. Maybe that's why they can charge less for each piece. If they lived in the US the costs would be considerably higher I assume.
Are you suggesting the individual models are individually hand made or the masters are? - it wasn't clear. The creators explained in an interview a few years back how they make the masters from in super high detail parts (e.g. the models stone parts are made from real stone) - but the resin you receive are just (very very nice) cast resin models.
No, I was giving my first impressions. I should put a disclaimer in the description. I thought it was clear seeing as i was just opening up the packages and talking. I hadnt done any research at this point. I'll put a disclaimer up and pin it.
Good review. They are some of the most detailed resin models on the market, but as others pointed out, the stones, shingles , etc are not separately cast, though the master, individual pieces certainly were, as Mladen confirmed himself, and the rest is just very good mold making and casting. I have many of their buildings and the best time to buy them is their Christmas sale where you can get free shipping and free bonus models based on how much you purchase. I got one of their most impressive buildings (the enormous town gate) free because of how many other buildings I bought). The biggest shame about these (and so many other buildlings in the wargaming hobby) is that the doors are not realistically proportioned to resemble real Medieval buildings, so in this case they are certainly not the most realistic buildings on the market. You will never see such low, wide, squat shaped doors in real medieval buildings and they are far too wide for real humans 28mm high.. They all seem to be made for morbidly obese dwarves or hobbits, and the ceilings are so low in most cases that you cannot modify them. Since I mostly use 40mm tall figures, the doors do not seem so unrealistically wide, and the doorway can be heightened by raising the foundations a bit. One thing that should be added, since you are only reviewing some of their simplest houses, is that in their larger structures, virtually every room in every building and tower is ingeniously accesible. These guys are super talented, but unfortunately every door in every building was made for what scale wise would be, a 4 1/2 foot tall, 300 lb. dwarf. Take a minute and look how narrow the doors are on real medieval buildings, unless they are double doors for public buildings like churches, but then, they would also be much taller. Years ago when most wargame miniatures were crude, short, watermelon headed freaks, wargame buildings were made to look 'right' for these monstrosities, but now so many figures are perfectly proportioned to like like real humans, yet the majority of wargame buildings are still made for overweight dwarves.

Do you think that the GW contrast paints would work on this fantastic terrain?
hmm... I'm not sure. From what I've seen for something bigger like this they might come out a little too washed out? I haven't tied them so i couldn't tell you for sure. I'm sure it's possible just not sure you'd get the same detail with standard paints.
They are too expensive for large scale painting. For terrain I'd use artist inks + medium + flow improver to mix your own stuff in a huge quantity. Contrast paints are basically "just" that, but premixed in tiny, expensive bottles. A little bit of experimentation will go a long away, especially if you need a large quantity of certain colors for terrain.

They make such beautifull buildings. One of their bigger buildings really inspired my first styrofoam building. Cant wait how they turn out ones you painted them. Im sure you’ll knock it out off the park

Yeah I'm going to try to get that one done asap. I've got some smaller quick builds just to get some fast content up, but will mostly be working on finishing that up in the background.

3D print or mould?
I have ten of them and plan to get more including their new stable that's on Kickstarter. Some of the small ones, like the cottage you showed I glued shut simply because there isn't enough interior room for funiture and I've dropping one or two roofs over the years has and they will break but...they're the best buildings I've seen on the market. There's some 3D printer terrain that has as much detail but I don't have a 3D printer.

Awesome man. I’m envious! Talking to someone whos actually held one of these in their hands, you know exactly where I’m coming from. If I were them, I’d be proud for what I’ve been able to create and recreate on a scale where others can enjoy the same quality put in to the original. You know where I’m coming from. Luke’s APS just put out a vid too, which is weird as I had mine ready for a while and wanted to put it out a week after the wizard tower video had been out. He’s just as impressed as I am, or vise versa, whichever you prefer.
@@RealTerrainHobbies The modeler used real stone, wood etc for the models vs scratching foam or modeling clay and the attention to detail is amazing. He put nail heads on the shingles! Tabletop Minons did a vid on them a year ago and the Terrain Tutor a year ago as well. Luke and you seem to be on the company's mailing list this year. PS Good timing with the discount! I was going to buy the Noble Townhouse this month besides getting in on the Kickstarter for the Stable.

P.S. They usually do a Christmas sale starting end October or November that comes with a automatic discount or a free building. Which building depends on how much you spend.

Maybe next time if contacting for reviews get some info from the manufacturers rather than wild speculation on construction processes. They look amazing but obv just great casting of hand made masters.

haha, they're a very small company. Resin is not cheap. I think the parcel tape is part of the charm and dedication from these guys making it on their own.
I think these parts made from 3D printer. You just build every parts you need in 3D software, print it out, and put them together. And it's more easy to mass production.
They are not 3D printed.

resin casting gets ALOT of detail. it can easily capture all of the detail you're saying is all places in as one. if it was "all glued on" as you kept stating it wouldnt be as strong.
the "seperate peice" details, you keep seeing are from where the silicone molds capture the details from the original piece, which was probibly made little of pieces put together and them they made a mold of it
Yeah you are exactly right. I talked more about it with the owners afterwards and that is pretty much exactly what they had to say about it.
A few things:
First, while they are really nice models, imo calling them "medieval" is not really justified. They are based on medieval buildings but clearly fantasy in nature - buildings simply did not look like that.
When made form stone they were nearly always whitewashed. The roof wouldn't have missing shingles, those iron-strips are way too thick, you wouldn't have tools just laying around randomly, same with (minuscule amounts of) food - and who would hang horse-shoes onto their wall, let alone over a stone water basin?
It looks great and certainly makes for good decoration, but imo they should decide on either medieval or fantasy. Like this it seems strange to me.

Sorry, you are are wrong, they build a master piece by piece then cast it in two pieces, a roof and the building. It is amazing but not piece by piece building. Resin casting is g rest stuff.
