Dizi are wonderful instruments, as are xiao. Are you familiar with the spectacular Chinese flutist, Chen Yue? She is such an inspiration of mine! One of many, as is Zheng Gege. If you'd like, I'd be delighted to share a few UA-cam videos of these most superlative performances. Such sublime finesse exoressed by both of them, each lady a master of her sublime art.

I will eventually move onto mastering the dizi, however I like the sound of the Xiao better (deeper, more resonant), so once when I learnt that I will try this :)

Great video. Just got my first Dizi and was wondering what is going on with a white plug on the inside of the flute near the mouthhole??? could this just be part of the packaging for transport that needs to be removed? or is this a normal thing on the inside of the flute. I had assumed they are hollow all the way through both sides but yes, a little bewilderd by this; and ofcourse on all the unboxing/maintaince videos nobody ever shows a shot down the end of the flute to see inside😂. Obviously this would effect the sound produced severely. Guess my next step is to head into a music store for info or any thoughts? Thanks again, 🙏 -Cheers

There is actually a whole art to applying the dizi membrane, but beginners can get away with using regular scotch tape as they're learning. At some point, regular scotch tape will no longer suffice to produce that distinctive buzzy sound the dizi is known for; thankfully, switching to membranes doesn't cost much, and there are plenty of guides that can be found online on how to apply it.
