Are there good pink flutes? Lol would love that
Unicat Caticorn Guo makes a decent plastic one
The eBay sounds better
@@unicatcaticorn5340 Maybe a rose gold one?
In band, My friend bought the same pink flute you have and one day she opened her case and all the keys fell off
Mena Toda omg that is TRAGIC 😂😂😂
That comment made me laugh so much and I don't know why
😆😆😆😭😭😭
😂😂😂😂
We have the same name lol
you know it's a bad instrument when they include accessories that are used for another instrument lol
Lol 😅😅 yeah why the cork grease??
Its slide grease and can be used on the flute joints
@@natalievergara5191 but it's mainly used for ex: clarinets and cork grease is only used if the flute is like really old and it won't go on
TypicalFlutist I could have used that cork grease man 😂
You can use it for a flute
I think I should buy a pink violin... I sound bad anyways so at least I can rip people's ears out while being all pretty.
Sybil Vane lmao 😂
Sybil Vane HAHAH
Just gotta say... YOUR NAME😍
Just bought my first fuchsia violin but not an amazon or an eBay model and it was 2400 I recommend it
Literally me lol my first violin is going to be white because I know I'll sound bad for at least the first year
You found a pink flute that is worse but also costs twice as much. Sounds about right. A metaphor for life.
So true, though!!!
I can hear the amazon one sounds like this *"fFFFfFfFfFffFfFfFFfFFFFFffFffffFfF"*
Yah its playing an instrument that you whistle into
That and it sounds more like fth-fthTfh-fth-Tfh
You would be shocked to know how many times beginning band directors see Mendini instruments
Poor them ...
Yeah a Mendini was my first trumpet so sadly I had to contribute to that.... luckily I have a King horn now
Hah that's why better off to rent the instruments..
RIP beginning band directors everywhere
Mine was a selmer flute but I play French horn now and it’s a conn
simply nailogical but... flute?
simply flutelogical
We can’t all be Lizzo and have a custom lacquered Muramatsu. 😂Definitely hear the difference but you sound fabulous no matter what you’re playing.
Besides the f# leaking the fuchsia flute doesn't actually sound worse then the baby pink one. BUT they both kinda sound like paper compared to your beautiful Muramatsu! Yet if there isn't the Muramatsu to compare, they both sound pretty good because YOU are playing them!💖
There should be differences in sound quality otherwise we'd all walk around playing pink flutes ... But I'm still surprised how decent the pink flutes sound. Nevertheless I doubt that a beginner (wo those flutes are aimed at) would be able to produce anything near that result. Even more I think they would lose interest in flute playing after a couple of days.
It does sound worse. The ebay pink one lacks depth, the fuchsia one lacks both depth and tone.
Wich name is the last song that was playing?
Theory: these flutes don't seal well on the headjoint-body connection, so the cork grease is there to help create a seal so the flute can be played. It's not for lubrication, it's basically caulk for instruments.
Possible, but then the headjoint would slip and mess up the tuning. You never grease a flute (an exception is the joints of a bass flute, since they have cork).
angela_flute52689 - also for piccolo! the connection between the headjoint and the body takes cork grease, if the piccolo has a cork
The amazon flute was definitely inferior to the ebay flute - both were really airy in the higher octaves. I thought they were quite decent for the price, but I doubt that a beginner would be able to produce a respectable tone at all. I guess the amount of effort you have to put into the intonation is much higher and so you'll be limited in the range of your playing (changing from legato to double tongueing, switching between octaves etc.). I guess the dynamics are limited, too. You did not show many dynamic changes (which is understandable. I don't think playing pink flutes gives you a lot of joy).
No idea what just said 😂 I play clarinet.
@@Kt-cn2rq I wouldn't have thought that clarinet is that different from flute - did you ever come across a superioir instrument like intermediate or for professionals? They are really pricy and a bit more tricky to use, but you will get a better intonation and a broader range of techniques with them.
The leaking is so bad on the amazon flute. Oh my goodness! You can really hear it.
My flute costs $180 and I don't know how to play It but I'm learning

I relate. I’ve never played the flute in my life- yet. Here. I. Am.
Even though the 2pink flutes are "spotty" you make them sound professional :)
I couldn't help but notice that your rose gold professional flute is also pink ;)
Roset828 it’s gold..
That's a reflection as the wall is pink...
Okay this is creepy I was just talking to my mom about getting a flute and now this is in my recommendations
Google: aw yeah, its all coming together
Markus Jonas 😂
Nikola Was Here I high key feel our phones listen to us. Stuff like that happens to too much people to be a coincidence. And Google gotta be behind it
join the flute cult 😂
Yeah, Google does that.
Nice vid. I could hear the difference going from the cheap flutes to your flute, especially in the depth and resonance when you used vibrato. I think a cool video idea would be doing flute "VOD" reviews. What I mean by this is listen to a video of somebody playing and give them tips and things you think they could work on and let them know what they're doing well also, etc. That would be fun to watch and good to learn from as a flute major dropout lol.
Ah u mean the roasting stuff 2set does 🤣🤣
*imagines you having a collection of flutes like scientists have dead insects or butterflies*
Ten years ago when I got my first flute it was deadass that amazon flute. I played it for fifth grade band lmao
Traci Pinzon I have a 300 dollar flute that is super good for its age it was my grandmas in high school so it’s well over 40 years old has some issues but still a great starter flute for mee
But why does she still sound good playing sucky flutes....
Lots of practice and dedication
Your Muramatsu flute sounded very lovely compared to the other two nicki minaj wannabees 😵 the precision when it hits each note is uhMayzing!
The eBay flute sounded much more vibrant and easier to play than the amazon flute and of course your professional flute sounded amazing. It was kind of like comparing a couple of kitchen scullery maids to a beautiful queen.
Hi Katie! I picked my flute up last year after a 15-year hiatus, and I've really been enjoying watching your videos! You're inspiring me to play more.
Would you be willing to put a card/annotation into your videos for each piece's composer and title? Thank you!

The light pink flute was much better than the hot pink one. Didn't hear a huge difference in the light pink and gold flute, but did hear some.
What’s the song that she played on all three flutes? I would really like to learn it!
christian león Borne’s Carmen Fantasy
The pink Amazon flute sounded absolutely terrible. The Ebay one was ok but still pretty bad. Also extremely jealous of your professional flute😍
You have to make the decision: Do I want a car or a flute??
Flutes are less expensive, smaller, and more environmentally friendly sooo...
BeaBunny Fair enough
Mine is between a phone or flute 😭
They included the screw driver as they knew you would immediately need it to fix the leaks.
I kinda have an addiction to the color yellow lol you're totally fine Katie
I love your playing style! I aspire to play like you when I'm older :')
The band camp anecdote had me in tears!! I haven't played my flute in years, but I recently pulled it out. Watching your videos is such a delight!
I played that EXACT Amazon flute in 8th grade band and this whole time I thought I was the reason it sounded so airy 😭
Me : * literally knowing nothing about blowing instruments*
Also me : yea I totally can hear a difference !
I am glad I found you I play the flute and I am so glad to see new stuff about flutes.
From personal experience, they probably gave you cork grease for when the flute starts sticking a bit. Add the tiniest bit of cork grease to your connecting joints and it'll loosen it back up and make assembling and disassembling the flute much easier again

The Mendeni Flutes I always said we’re horrible and I don’t know if my flute is broken or not cause I’m a beginner and my band teacher blames the leakage/screech on me. It took me a while for me to learn just from the amount of times my flute broke since it’s a mendini 7 year old flute, I’m going to buy the recommended flute for a beginner on your channel and learn for my own being.
OMG YAS FLUTELYFE MERCH GO OFF QUEEN brb ordering them in all the colors
4:28 Amazon Flute
5:03 eBay Flute
5:40 Muramatsu flute.
Since the back to back comparison isn’t very helpful, I posted some time stamps to better hear the difference.
I haven't played in 20 years and bought a flute off of ebay to see if i could still make a sound with it. I'm having my flute teacher try it out but it's not too bad on scales. The challenge for me will be reading music.
I think it's pretty obvious that your normal flute is much better than the others, but I have to agree that the ebay flute is better than the amazon flute. The leaking on that one is very audible.
I play trumpet. WHY AM I HERE???
Haylea Brown I play clarinet why am I here???😂❤️
Because flute is amazing
LemoniDrop well when she plays it it is
i play the alto sax why am i here
WELCOME.
I play flute too! And I’m a Katie! This must be destiny, subscribing now😂
A Pink flute is so beautiful
I was given the “silver” plated mendini flute shown here as my first flute in 6th grade and instantly I experienced problems. It’s really worth a good instrument to learn on-for a long time I thought my airy tone was attributed to my embouchure, and practice was plagued with frustration. In fact it was the same problem here: leaky keys all over.
Haha I think the baby pink flute was better because it wasn't leaking so much! Also I loved the piece you played on your gold flute. It was so amazing
OMG YES!
Hey Katie! I was wondering what song you use in your intro? I love it so much, thanks!
it's the allegretto from Godard's suite of three pieces :)
katieflute thank you so much!
i had to learn that for my band exam last year :)
i’m a bassoonist watching.. lol. but if a bassoonist can watch a video centered around flute and learn AND be entertained, then you’re doing something right! love your content :)
To me they all sound the same way better than my flute playing
They sound way di
A few things to mention:
1. I love you so much and look up to you!
2. All of your videos are so helpful for me...even if they’re a bit random and fun😅
3. Collab with twoset?
4. 2:07 is such a mood haha
5. You sounded amAAAzing on all of them
the fuchsia one sounds like a person who smokes every day
they sound like the stages of being sick
the amazon flute is a runny nose
the ebay flute is a stuffy nose
and the muramatsu is good health
someone in my schools sixth grade band had a purple flute told the band director it wasn't playing right the director told her is was TRASH then showed my section (the flutes) why we shouldn't buy something like that, because one, the cork was TORN up, and also the fact that he could bend it in half with two fingers
I’m A percussionist lol I wanna play the flute nowww
Video idea,
make your own flute orchestra with recorded & edited video of you playing each part
(plus maybe the creation process of said video)
I believe that the Amazon flute sounds a lot worse than the EBay flute. Your Muramatsu of course was the best one!
Her: has a 20,000 dollar flute
Me: has 1,000 dollar clairnet
bunky _2007 okay but same
me: has a $7,000 violin
instruments are really expensive dam
me: has a 5500 dollar saxophone
My flute's $2000.
does anyone know the song that she played? Sounds like something from Carmen by Bizet (btw I had a leak on f# as well as the bb thumb key on my Gemeinhardt :/. But now I have an intermediate yamaha 581 which plays amazingly)
I play horn and don't know what is A good flute sounds like lmao 😂 buttttt I still love this channel
dude ive been studying that mozart in GMaj piece for like three months now im getting war flashbacks
They both make noise and sound like a flute, so like. They wouldn’t be good for a musician or a student, but for someone who has yet to make any noise at all on a flute, why not?
I had such a bad experience with mendini. I was only in 6th grade and had no idea what I was buying!!
I think the reason the difference between the 3 isn’t that great to me is simply because 1. I’m just a cellist and 2. Because you’re a really good flutist.
Cecilo is a very common brand for cheap Amazon instruments
Good thing for a handy dandy screwdriver(unless it is a Phillips) to adjust that D key.
Wow! You're amazing. I have been playing for a year and I am no where near as good as you! Keep it up👍👍
What was the song she was playing at 4:45? Amazing playing!!
The eBay pale pink one wasn’t half bad tbh especially for its price 🙂but the rose gold Muramatsu was absolutely GORGEOUS!!! Of course it’s your playing ability that makes them sound so good. Once the fuschia flute was fixed it probably wouldn’t sound too bad either for it’s price point.
I guess like most things in life we get what we pay for?!
Love your channel Katie .❤️
My flute is already so bad that I’m considering getting the light pink one. Mine leaks on sooo many notes
I’m saving up for a better flute but like,,, pink
The Amazon flute *SUCKS!* the ebay flute is fine. And the 9 karat rose gold Muramatsu Flute sounds beautiful!!
If you want a third option, you should try out the Nuvo Student Flute. The first version is available in solid hot pink, and the updated 2.0 version has the option of white with hot pink accents. I am both cheap and a hobbyist, so I bought one to learn on and it is Surprisingly Decent (TM) for a plastic flute.
I have two of them ;)
The Nuvo is also waterproof!
you could put GOOD flutes next to a Muramatsu and the Muramatsu would win! hehe!
Even if it’s cheaper the instrument still sounds the same
I had literally the exact same flute. Same dodgy F# key and everything 😂
You could turn the bad flutes into lamps. ☺🎶😁
It took me 3 years of flute playing to realize that cork grease was not meant for a flute lol. My band teacher in elementary was a clarinet player and thought every instrument could use cork grease
You need a pink piccolo now
i swear she own’s like 50 flutes now :0
Wow my flute didn't even COME with a case
It’s never enough to have some more pink flutes :)
TRUE
Tube material and price doesn't have much to do with the basic sound quality of the flute. However, construction and design of the head joint, the blow hole's size, shape and proportions, undercutting, as well as how well the pads seal, has everything to do with playability of the flute, especially articulation, and that means everything from how easily a note speaks, to the amount of crud or fuzz in the tone at the point of articulation. You want a clean articulation or playing fast, tongued passages sound messy and indistinct, and are more difficult to play.
Sometimes these things aren't audible to everyone, but they are things a player is very much aware of.
Let's say you are a serious flutist, have studied all the excerpts, and play them without flaws, and you want to make sure you have the ultimate flute for auditions. If your flute has a good mechanism, and is in good condition, and is good quality, then your first priority should be finding a good head joint. You'd think this would be simple. Try various head joints and the one that feels and sounds the best is the best. But wait! There's another catch. Sometimes head joints that offer some resistance at first, might ultimately be the best for you, instead of the one that seems to play most easily right away. Isn't that terrible to contemplate? I had a friend, years ago, because I'm old, who had a terrible time deciding between two head joints. One had a slightly richer sound, and the other one had cleaner articulation.
In the 1960s, one manufacturer produced an inexpensive student flute which had a sensational head joint design -- the Bundy by Selmer. At the time, girls did not want a Bundy, because the name Gemeinhardt sounded so much better. The Bundy has a very large, squarish blow hole design, similar to that of a Powell. In contrast, the blow hole of a Gemeinhardt was small and oval. The Bundy came in nickle or silver plated. Nickle is very slippery. Jeanne Baxtresser, the great flutist who went from Juilliard directly to principal of the Montreal Symphony and then principal of the NY Philharmonic, used to get her Bundy out and play it for some of her students. William Kincaid also knew about the Bundy, I believe.
The worst thing about many off-brand cheap flutes (sub $300) that have a full mechanism, as others have noted in the comments, is that the mechanism will not stay in adjustment. It may bend, or not be fitted right to begin with. They can be so cheap that they can't be fixed. My mind is blown that you can buy a flute for $30 that has a full mechanism, even if it were just decorative and didn't work at all. I bought a recorder at the dollar store, and it wouldn't even play.
え、うま!
Oh no my mom just bought a blue Amazon one for she gonna kill me
I love ur videos and you play it very nice :)
Can you pls play Der Erlkönig? I didnt see any flutist play it and I really like the piece. Sorry for my english :)
I was talking to my mom about purchasing a flute and she was like “why can’t you just buy one off of Amazon?”
Ugh.
So I try to explain to her why that’s not the greatest idea and she still doesn’t understand.
U g h.
Show her this video. Listening to that Amazon flute leak should convince her.
I thought the pink eBay flute had a more vibrant, lively sound than the Muramatsu, having heard you play the same tune on both. I suppose this is a credit to the Muramatsu, as I suppose you are using less air, and you have to put more effort into the $30 pink one. But if you were playing solo and I was in the audience, I believe I would prefer the sound you get from the $30 pink one, perhaps depending on the piece. It definitely goes well with March of the Toreadors. Thank you for putting your best into all three (save for the leaking fuchsia)!
Try a lefreque on the cheap flutes just for fun to see what it does
Fuchsia is inherently inferior to pink.
Cork grease is awesome chapstick wym shit smells like mint too
Halo sweet Katiemy friend. This was a great video. Not easy to hear the different sounds, I think it depend a lot of the player. You can get a golden tone out of the Pink Flute. Thanks for sharing. All the best/Kjell 🎸 🎸
one time I made the mistake of putting cork grease on like Chapstick, my lips were BURNING but it did the exact same job as putting it on the cork
Never played an instrument in my life except the recorder. Always loved the flute, though. Came here after watching the Wish Flute video.
I am deaf in one ear and thought the funky FFrFfffffFfff noise was something I was imagining till I saw it mentioned in the comments. Holy cow. And the sharpness of some of the notes had me cringing on all three cheap flutes. It's like being stabbed in the ears. But mostly aside from the air leaks they all just share the same sort of lackluster sound. Not really flat exactly (and too sharp for sure in places) but empty and unsatisfying. It sounds almost criminal compared to the bad-ass professional flute's round full tones and clean sound.
I'm not sure if the headache I have is from those flutes or being up too late but dang, never looking at super cheap flutes ever again and considering maybe trying one. It'd be a crime against anyone who had to hear it!
What’s funny is that I bought that flute for band but in blue and not even like months later the color started peel off but it sounds great which is weird. Later on I bought another flute from a different company called Cecilio and it has a lot of leaks. I really want to use my blue flute for my concert tmrw but I’m trying to find a way that I can take the color off so it won’t be a huge problem yk
STOP 😭😭 that’s the flute I have by the same company but mine is silver not pink, my mom also got it from Amazon too lol but great for starters like me who can barley play a few notes on it 💀💀
Dwagony opinion: from this side of screen, Amazon flute sounded better than Ebay one. Of course one has to take into consideration the flute PLAYER... (flutist? flautist? fluter?)... who really, I think could make a $1 plastic recorder sound great. Of course $20,000 flute sounded best of all.... but did it sound $20,000 better? That sad, regarding leaking: I used to repair instruments many years ago. One of the most common things we had to do with brand new "beginner flutes" was seat the pads. Why? Because for that kind of money they didn't take time to seat them properly at the factory. I've no doubt you know how to seat pads, but for those who don't: spray them with water and use flute clamps (or light builders clamps) to clamp them to the flute overnight (do not use rubber bands, the acid will tarnish your flute). Next day unclamp, and there should be far, far better seating, leaks gone (unless the entire key was out of line to start with). So for $30... I wouldn't mind having to seat the flute to stop the leaks. It's sort of like setting the action on an off-the-shelf guitar. Just kind of taken for granted that will need done. : )
However, these cheap flutes tend to have weak parts, a poorly-designed embouchure, or any number of flaws. I think you got a great buy on two beginner flutes. They just need some tender luvings, and expectation that they may not last as long as a $20,000 flute (or sound quite as good). But let's see... twenty grand divided by thirty bucks... mwahahahaaa...
Wait buy your boyfriend a pink violin
