    HI! I watched all your videos about playing Xiao, but my Xiao has 12 holes (9 from front side), I play it vertically, but could you suggest some tutorial to play it horizontally? (I guess those holes are for that or should I cover them with membranes)?

      I know i'm too late but, he says in the video that the fingering is the same so it wouldn't be much different

    • @ben_patel
      @ben_patel 6 років тому +2

      Sorry for replying too late too. But, it's wrong, the fingering is totally different. A xiao requires 6, 7, 8 or 9 fingers to play (usually ppl play the 8-hole ones, the Vietnamese ppl even create the 10-hole xiao, the 11-hole xiao and the 12-hole xiao which are much more difficult to play). A dizi requires only 6 or 10 fingers.
      Here are some pictures to demonstrate my point:
      +) 8-hole xiao: kenhtieusao.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/he-bam-thang-am-tieu-bat-khong.jpg
      +) 10-11-12-hole xiao: tieusao.net/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/he-bam-tieu-viet-80-800x600.jpg

    I have a Chinese flute bamboo but my mouth piece is very different then yours. Can you help me identify it? It is 3 different pieces. The blow hole is in a metal section and the hole is more of a slit and not a hole. On the other piece there is a fancy chunk that I think is what causes the sound.

    Hi, I noticed that in another video the xiao had an open mouthpiece but this one is closed. I have a bamboo flute that I think is a xiao with an open mouthpiece but I don't know, I'm trying to figure out what it is. Is it common to have an open mouthpiece?
    Thanks!

    • @Chiinnature
      @Chiinnature  2 місяці тому +1

      the southern style have open mouthpieces, and it's the same kind of technique to blow them. Closed mouthpieces could be easier for newbies, but eventually it feels the same.

    • @MattLeGroulx
      @MattLeGroulx 2 місяці тому

      @@Chiinnature Ok, thank you! I can get some notes out of it now. It has five holes on the front and one thumb hole so I'm assuming it's more of a traditional style? It also has red paint on the inside. You wouldn't happen to know anything about the Tsing Sheng company, would you? Sorry to ask so many questions! I haven't been able to find anything online about this xiao.

    • @Chiinnature
      @Chiinnature  2 місяці тому +1

      Red paint in the inside is good, its for anti-crack. Don't know about that company but your Xiao should be very easy to play. 5 holes are good and sound more "asian", I have 5 holes for most of my xiao too. Left hand 2 fingers on top hole, right hand 3 fingers on the bottom. Make sure you don't cover the holes with the TIP of the fingers. We use the middle section of the finger to cover the holes so the hands don't cramp up during playing and it's much more relaxed, but it's weird at the first stage because it's very "strange". Spend 15mins playing it daily, put it beside your computer, and after a month or so you will be having fun playing like a pro. lol!

    • @MattLeGroulx
      @MattLeGroulx 2 місяці тому

      @@Chiinnature Ah, thank you! Yes, the hardest part for me right now is the right hand fingering, especially the lowest note. I need to practice!

    • @Chiinnature
      @Chiinnature  2 місяці тому +1

      blow less hard on the low note, then the sound will come out. Good luck!

    What is the difference between the 8 hole XIAO and the Recorder.

    • @BiologicalClock
      @BiologicalClock 4 роки тому

      The recorder has a mouthpiece that is placed inside of the lips and is very easy to get a sound out of. The Siu/Xiao has a slotted opening that requires air flow to hit the opening at a specific angle in order to create sound.
