  • The Roland TR-808 has featured on countless records and tracks - from chart-topping pop songs to underground classics - and is one of the most revered electronic musical instruments of all time. The booming bass drum, sizzling hi-hats, snappy snare, and that unmistakable cowbell, has formed the rhythmic foundation of many genres with a sound that is engrained in today’s music and culture.
In this video, we chat about the latest instrument in the Roland Boutique series - the Roland TR-08 Rhythm Composer. We discuss what the numbers "8-0-8" mean to a number of artists; some of whom have a legacy deeply engrained with the TR-808 to a younger generation of producers who look to take the sound of the TR-808 to a bright future.
Join Jimmy Jam, Egyptian Lover, Principleasure, Shy Boogs, Marley Marl, Nadus, DJ Jazzy Jeff and Juan Atkins share their love for the 808 and the new TR-08 Rhythm Composer.
    ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
The TR-08 brings the look, sound, and feel of the original 808 - with stunning accuracy - to the Roland Boutique format. From the instantly-recognizable red-orange-yellow-white markings, the shape of the sequencer buttons, switches and knobs are details that have been painstakingly reproduced to match the iconic recreation of sounds. Along with the aesthetic touches, the TR-08 contains new features like 16 sub-steps for fast rolls, independent trigger out track, compression/gain/tune for instruments and a selectable modified “long decay” bass drum for more boom and resonance.

The Roland TR-8 has 16 kits including 808, 909, 707 & 727 drum machines, stereo output, mixer, built in delay & reverb with side chaining. I would think most people would buy this TR-08 just for the nostalgic looks.

I like Analog very much ... but I think the difference in the sound is not soooo big as many vintage fans here describe. It is crazy to pay 3500 $ for an old 808 that sounds not really much better then a divice of 400 $. If you have the money why not but I like the new features of the 08. I will buy this one.

Roland is about to sell a boat load of TR-08's, the clone war is over you style stealers, I think they should win an award for taking the time out to recreate the look and feel of a legend and bring it back too the masses, they don't care about what you haters think about their ACB Circuits, All these modern analog gear coming out today looks and feel retro, but they all still hookup to computers via USB, processed through your DAW of choice and then scattered digitally all over the internet, when the "TR-08 and the SH-101a" comes out I will be spending my $349 on Roland's ACB Technology once again.

I'm curious to know how the sound compares to the TR-8. Is it the same, not as good, or better? Also, some of the elitists on this thread (all of whom I've never heard any music from) should chill. I think that it's dope that Roland is making efforts to put cool AFFORDABLE products in people's hands. Most people can't find or afford an original 808 or 909 so I think these machines are pretty dope.

Guys, I really don't want to start the flame or something like this, but I have to say, the 09 and 08 are really great boutique things.
The others, meh, but these are there.
I mean, I know analog, I've built a lot of sh*t for my studio, from little pedals thru small noise boxes to large format modulars and outboards.
They sound amazing, yes, but if you really know analog, you know they could be a pain the as* to deal with. Noise, ground loops, heat(!) just to mention a few.
With these little boxes, you have a lot space left, they are not producing that much of heat and the most important, they sounds the same, always!
Honestly, you can't really hear the difference in a track...I think most of your fav. trap / hip hop / todays minimal techno tracks use samples only...

    • @MFPRODUCTIONSCHANNEL
      @MFPRODUCTIONSCHANNEL 5 років тому

No you can't, but if you go into the MENU settings, and go to the "gain" option, you can adjust the volume of each of the sounds. In this mode, touching the numbered keys lets you hear all the different sounds. For example, pressing the 1 key is bassdrum sound, key 2 is snare, etc etc. In the step sequencer recording, you can use the TAP button on the machine to record in each sound "live". Put the machine in record mode, put the sound selector know to the sound you want, then press the TAP button to make your pattern. then switch to the next sound and use the TAP button again to record your pattern in real time.

micro USB is a bit off putting, When broken it turns into battery powered with no separate outs. I doubt the micro USB will out live the System requirements for USB audio, The speed technology moves system requirements support doesn't last long. Better power input and separate mini jack outs would of past the test of time. Also micro USB is not something robust that you can gig with.

Agreed, but It’s easy enough to attach a short ribbon-style cable from microusb to something like a usbC female to increase longevity of the port… just attach the usbc cable/port to the side of the tr-08 and never unplug it from the unit (it would act as a new port). Of course usbc would have been better from the get-go, but it is easy enough to work around. JMHO.

Yeah, but through usb you get 10 individual outs which is what many people use for things like logic… agreed that real out ports would have been nice as well.

Who cares if its digital or analog? you still get the sounds of the original but it also opens up a new dimension of sounds (maybe not for the drum machines and some other boutiques, but sh01a for sure). My only complaint is that the keyboard controller sucks and the buttons on the drum machines are wayyyy too small for random sequencing and quick changes. Boutique format for synths? maybe. Boutique format for drum machines? don't. just don't.

put smaller jacks in it then 3.5 instead of 1/4 :) don't make a 808 that does not do what the real 808 did better, ok they say the sound is ni on perfect but its the little things that make the difference. then you don't keep saying " if only they..." People spend 5 thousand on a new vintage custom shop Les Paul, why is it just not possible to do so with the Tr808 or the Junos and Jupiters? I think a new Jupiter synth with 12 Voices, VCOs, and maybe different VCFs, one IR3109 and maybe one Curtis type filter and a nice mod matrix for about 3-4k dollars would be the right path to go.. A piano player wants a real steinway, and a synth player wants a real Jupiter, Prophet,.. why is Roland just so lame..

I do not understand this bashing against Roland, the engineers break their heads to offer us reissues at low cost, equally effective of legendary drum machine and synth that would mostly be unable to invest so much these vintage machines because they reaches prices to 4 numbers and we still makes picky eater.

Its 30 years too late guys ! It doesn't move the earth for us no more. Roland themselves provided those same 808 & 909 sounds on numerous other digital items since the 1990's. Roland should have simply reintroduced those original machines when they discovered so many types of music were using them. Roland would have sold every original reissued machine if they'd done all this 30 years back !

It's better than a plug in obviously because it's got the original 808 sound but there is more advanced drum machines out there now.

Coming soon from the makers of quality Roland 'boutique instruments' is the TB-303/SH-101/Juno60/System700-100M/TR707/TR808/TR909, combined for your pleasure in a tiny box with pots and switches that would barely fit Trump's fingers. We've decided to bundled all the audio through a USB jack with no array of audio outs as we've decided to bundled all the audio through a USB jack which means using simple audio cables to quickly patch your 'boutique' brand with a range of other outboard gear will become a royal pain in the ass. But never fear, your new 'boutique box' makes all those bleeps or pads or beats or what ever it is that you've always coveted since you were a kid when you heard them on the seminal records you still hold so dear. So buy our new 'boutique' brand containing all the instruments you ever wanted to attempt to make music that sounds vaguely similar to the nostalgic records of your past.
Both Roland and Korg are pillaging their musical history with next no view of creating truly futuristic instruments that could create new sounds, that perhaps have ergonomic intuitive controls and are not just the same continual rape of our musical technological heritage. Roland, you have an unbelievable R&D department at 4141 Kiga, Hosoe-cho, Kita-ku, Hamamatsu, Shizuoka with some of the brightest minds in the field of synthesis, sound and electronics and yet you have them churning out cheap facsimiles of the past to line your coffers. And I'm sure they sell by the bucketload considering the second hand market for the originals, but as a whole has our music culture benefited from this cornucopia of copies?
Now I'm sure this is where fanboys of various genres will jump in stating that this band or this person is currently pushing the boundaries of music as we know it. And perhaps they are, good for them, but that's not my issue. My issue is with our music culture as a whole and it is stagnating. When the original 808/909s came out they revolutionised both hip hop and techno amongst a myriad of different forms of music. As mentioned in the promo video above the sounds were so futuristic that everyone became inspired to write and create new forms of music. Now those "futuristic" sounds are nearly 50 years old. What is so inspiring about that? All these machines pander to is the nostalgia of the sound itself, nothing more. We all borrow from those that have gone before, I have no issue with that, that is to a great extent how modern culture proliferates, be it music, art or literature, but it's only really in music where technological nostalgia stymies us so greatly, to some extent limiting our creativity and stopping us from pushing for a different, new cultural future.

Some people want to experience using iconic gear and not pay $4000+. I think it is amazing that Roland has re-created vintage drum machines and synthesisers so the new generation of musicians can explore and create. Roland is trying to give the new generation of musicians an affordable version of vintage equipment, not trying to re-invent the wheel. Why don't the people complaining about the poor build quality, size, no individual outs, etc just go and buy the original haha? I'm sure if roland made a complete replica of the original you would all still complain. Roland is giving musicians access to vintage sound and aesthetic, whilst allowing them to be compatible with modern equipment. They even gave us CV, Gate and trigger outs so at least some of us with vintage gear can sync with that.
I think in order to create a new sound you need to have an extensive knowledge of past sounds. At the time musicians were starting to use these machines (808, 909, 101, 303) they were trying to create new 'futuristic' sounds whilst referencing past sounds (disco, funk, soul, boogie). I think that allowing new musicians to have access to re-creations of these highly influential machines will allow new sounds to form, by taking inspiration from the past.
Music doesn't have to always be 'futuristic', most house and techno coming out of the underground at the moment is referencing 90's garage, Detroit and Chicago. I think that electronic music is no longer seen as being as 'futuristic' as it first was in the 70's, 80's and 90's. I guess this is just because, like you said, its been around for nearly 50 years. Music is different for everyone and by assuming music culture is "stagnating" because "you've heard everything and it all sounds like shit because new musicians just rip off old stuff" is fucking dumb.

+Uremawife Nowdave How exactly is Korg pillaging its musical history ? By giving us back it's MS20 and sequencer? Korg is quite smart for reproducing the Arp Odyssey as it's originally from a different manufacturer altogether. After 20 years a patent expires, so technically, Korg could reproduce a full sized full analog TR808, 909, Jupiter8 etc. Don't you think they'd sell ? I think Korg would laugh Roland straight into bankruptcy !
I wish someone would put this Roland company (under it's current leadership) out of it's misery - it's a serial fail !
Watch out for Behringer though, they're already taken the Juno106, the Model D Minimoog and the Curtis 3340 VCO chip ! What next ?
