The Egyptian Lover - king of the TR-808, analog loyalist and 80s synth pioneer - gives you a first look at the brand new Roland Boutique TR-08 Drum Machine, an ultra-compact recreation of the famed Roland TR-808.
The Legendary Boom and Sizzle of the Most Famous Drum Machine Ever Made - Now in an Affordable and Modern Format
The TR-08 is an obsessively detailed and faithful replica of the legendary TR-808-easily the most famous and influential drum machine ever made. After creating a monumental shift in the sound of music, the 808 has continued to shape and define entire genres. Beloved by musicians and producers the world over, it’s one of the most revered and sought-after electronic musical instruments of all time. The TR-08 brings the look, sound, and feel of the original 808-with stunning accuracy-to the Roland Boutique format. It blends attention to detail and respect for legacy with modern convenience and reliability.
At last…someone with a sense of rhythm demoing a drum machine!
Someone? LMFAO! This man was one of the inventors of electro--basically first wave hiphop. The 808 is the singular drum machine of first generation hiphop. There is likely nobody on the planet that has pressed more 808 buttons than he has. He IS the 808.
The TR-08 sounds good by itself but the minute the real 808 came on it jumped out much more intense
To be fair, the 808 is louder.
It was the crack of the snare I really noticed . Bit more high end snap on the 808.
The 808 kick also just seems to have more, I don't know, compression maybe? Just pushes you in the chest. TR-08 sounds great though - just wish they could make it do the same thing!
I'm not being an apologist/defender of the 08. It's fine for what it is, but the 808 sounds so much better. There definitely is a weight/heft and snap/attack to it that isn't present in the 08. But, the treble/presence could be possibly attributed to higher volume. Just trying to be fair
I think rebirth sounded better. Not even close.
It’s out now and the ones who bought it already know it’s a nice drum machine. Only $350 and you can program your own beats. Roland I want to thank you for this.
And I want to thank you for making bad ass electro since the 80s. On the Nile was one of my first albums I bought with my lawn cutting money. Lol.
I just got a Roland TR-8S and I've been making a shit load of electro, as well as techno and trap, with this beast.
Anyway, have a good one. Loving the new albums. Keep it up.
where is it $350 ?
the unit u gave me became a part of me. i'll never forget this. and the moment i turned it on for the first time. thank u sooooooooooo much!!! the original cowbell for instance is higher, but one can tweak that (a lil extra the original didn't have). i basically tweaked it to the point i can't differ it from my original one. ).
I want one but I don't know shiet about making beats. I love ALL of your jams and the new stuff too. Been a big fan since 1985 when I heard "Girls"
This lovely man is famous for making the same beat over and over and over again for 35 years....... wish it was me.
Dont hate see he did what he loves dedicated his life to it in it's not the same beat maybe you need to learn music before you knock what hes doing
@@brianwoods6503 EXACTLY!!! and there is no one more LOVING, giving and true to the game than egypt is. i know...he's doing all this for a reason...
Now everyone understands why old Analogue recordings were and still are best way to get soulfull sound...
He got the decay of the TR-08 kick set so short!! Can't y'all hear that? He got the 808 kick boomin long and the TR-08 kick set to "tiny click." Turn that decay knob on the TR-08 up and the volume up just like 2db and everyone wouldn't be sayin shit! Smart people thumbs up if you understand what I'm sayin
that is a SIGNATURE Egyptian Lover beat! I used to breakdance to you back in 84!
ugh I'm SOO OLD.
I'm sitting on my sofa ,and pointing at a king Tut lamp on my end table while saying, "TELL'EM WHAT I AM!". You're the best E.L.!! love ya bruh!
I like watching Egyptian Lover's info videos because his delivery is simple, easy to understand, and evaluated honestly with years of first hand applied experience to base his comments on.
HIP-HOP YA DON'T STOP!
Is it just me, or does his 808 have 100% more low punch than the new 08? The snare on the 08 also sounds different.
All the 808s and 909s I've heard sound slightly different. Probably an artifact from the manufacturing
Still sounds good… when this video came out I went and got an 08 and I was not disappointed
3:36 I feel more power from the analog 808
Analog sounds a lot better I agree!
I learned more about how to use the TR-08 from this video, than I did messing with it for an hour.
I love Egyptian Lover! This demo sold me in the first few seconds! Got to add this before the used TR-08 prices go way up!
Nobody better to showcase this machine than Thee Egyptian Lover himself...The 808 King!!!
the cowbell in tr808 is tuned in D/tr08: C#
.....like he kept a straight face the whole time. lol
I FUCKING LOVE MUSIC WITH EVERYTHING I GOT
Ok
the sound speaks for itself ;)
ja, leider....
I now understand why you made this video on "the real shit" XD
RetroSound The volume levels of both machines haven't been adjusted for power outout to the amp. No wonder the 808 sounds better, because it was just louder. You can't compare two machines without good preparation.
100% spot on, i have both, and run through a decent mic pre, i use API.. then there's no noticeable difference apart from the 808 sounds a bit noisier, put it in a mix.. then fahgettaboudit !
On the TR-08 you can also choose between 2 kicks - BD (Normal or Long Decay) as well as add built in compression to the bass drum and snare drum...it hits hard and I'm loving it!!! Scored the 08 for just under $300, bought my TR808 about 10 years ago for $800
I was on the fence but you just SOLD me on this product, sir. This is exactly what I need to get my home recording demos off the ground. Thank you!
dont get the hate. its portable, runs on batteries, sounds good. good fun factor...
Digital vs Warmer Analog Curves They don't sound the same to my ears. TR-08 sound weaker. It does not sound bad at all tho..
Only ONE output.
I think if you've programmed a real 808 easy to make the change, I think its too small, got an RD-8 myself but its different to programming a real 808
I’m curious...how many of the hate comments are from people who actually own a TR08? When properly tuned and leveled it’s a pretty solid match to an 808, and even if you disagree it’s still a great drum machine in its own right. This video doesn’t really give the TR08 justice. The low end and decay on the TR08 is serious. It might be tiny but it’s not a toy...a powerful tool in the right hands.
Big bow to the Great Egyptian Lover .... I've been listening to you since the 80s from your first album :-)
The TR-808 Snare is unmistakably better, however I rather pay $350 for the TR-08 than $5K for the original. The TR-08 is good enough for me.
Why tf is the 808 so expensive?
I mean i get that its a legendary drum machine but 5000 is a steep price
@@memesmoke1206 limited number of units manufactured.
@@memesmoke1206 The same reason anything that's a classic, legendary, in high demand and is no longer made like a classic car. Classic anything is going to command a high price.
meme Smoke Only 12,000 were made. And they were on countless classic tracks. Everyone wants one. // If you haven’t already, watch the documentary “808” on amazon prime.
You can post-EQ the 08 and it'll bring up the boomy bass and snappy snare of the 808 everyone in the comments is talking about. That was my main concern then I saw a buddy do it, and finally this guy is just so cool his attitude ABOUT it made me finally jump and purchase!
Damn, I've got to get one. Ive been a fan of your for years
The New TR-08 sounds great. The sound tech just had the volume lower on it when we shot the video. It was turned down because the mic was feeding back. For only $350 you can't beat that. The look and the sound and feel of the TR 808 at a fraction of the cost. Don't sleep on this boutique by Roland. If you can't afford the O.G. get the 08. It's just like saying if you can't afford the La Ferrari get the 488.
"The sound tech just had the volume lower" "because the mic was feeding back" - why have a sound tech at all then ? Wasn't he hired to make sure issues like this wouldn't happen ? Now you have to come here and make all sorts of explanations, excuses and promises. Why shoot a video at all ?
beatz04 why all the bad vibes? It's just a video. It's only $350. Buy it. You'll make that back when you win the Grammy.
It's not "bad vibes" (google "ad hominem") - it's called criticism.
would have been better to record everything matched going direct in vs. using a microphone and then syncing that with the video, at the end of the day it's the sound that matters so it's important to make sure that the representation is as accurate as possible, that is what the audience will be judging on. Appreciate the demo tho and much love to Egyptian Lover. #beatgoboom
As a producer and director who has shot stuff with Sony, Microsoft and Renault, how the heck did you make such a mess of this, if your claim regarding the audio is true? Visually you got it right but the audio is the most important thing.
I just downloaded the pure audio of this video to normalize both tracks and compare it. It's weird, but the waveform of the original 808 is in fact less louder (less transients, I guess). So with both tracks normalized, the difference is even more obvious than in this video...
This is hands down the best video on this I've seen yet.
Now listening to this video thru my Tr-08 speaker!
wow, a very cool presentation!
0:31 Egyptian Lover: ""exact same sound""
NO WAY!!!
yea that was weird
unbelievable, very very cool...
TR-08 sounds like a mosquito... TR808 hands down... The Legend of Drum Machine that will never be beaten!
Roland fow life! Thank you for letting me know the price of the TR-08. I still Rock out with Egypt Egypt and that is a song in head of its time. Nothing compares or competes with Roland products.
Thanks man, you’ve helped me so much rn !
It seems some viewers here aren't aware that the beat was already pre-programmed/tweaked on the TR-808.
About 5:00 onwards, Greg adjusts the bass on the TR-08 to match what was heard on the TR-808. Also, notice how this video was uploaded on August 8th (808 Day)
Amazing
The sounds on the tr 08 can be tuned and have gain settings for the sounds in settings,it sounds pretty damn good,I'm not mad at it,if you are really into the tr 808 the tr 08 is true to its 808 sound 💯💯💯💥
That's freaking awesome
Yo, I was going to buy this anyway but seeing one of my heroes Egyptian Lover demonstrate this was icing on the cake.
*the* egyption lover, I bow down before you spend the mid 80s just listening to electro
Im friends with EL on facebook,, im just a fan but hes a great guy and always comments back at me! one of my biggest musical influences for sure
In this video, the 808 sounds much better than the 08, and I don't think it's just because it has a bit higher volume. Sounds much more present and full. The 08 sounds thinner.
thx for the pure bullshit, UltimatePatches
he's right actually
The Mystic Trance complete bs - There is no mystic ingredient to analog. You would fail at a double blind test, like all those violin players who preferd new violins over stradivaris, when they didn't knew what they were playing.
The Mystic Trance if you have good monitors and a sub in your studio it will sound just as good as the 808!
So, with no good monitors and a sub it won't sound as good as a real 808?
I guess that’s how you’re supposed to hold a TR08 lmao
Egyptian Lover is one of the real king of the beats, along with Kurtis Mantronik.
808 has that bass! Sick stuff.
look at the amazing beast of a man playing that tiny little 808... awwww
Awesomeness
The 808 is an untamed beast, very organic!
He literally says in the video they used post processing on the 808 to modify the sound. That's really stupid for a comparison video, and the kick still sounds a lot worse. But I think a lot of the difference is easily chalked up to loudness and different settings. The decay is noticeably different.
"The Mini Me of The 808" 😂😂
Gostei. Fantástico.
been waiting for this video since 1984! LOL
Guys....
The volume of some parts of the TR-08 are a bit lower than the 808.... You can't do a comparison of two machines with different volume levels... (Take for example the kick drum...)
It's psychoacoustics.... Even if it's 1 dB...The brain will always prefer the louder source.
P.S. Yes, the 808 may sound a bit fuller but still... a comparison with different volume levels is not fair.
Exactly it's digital. Tr 08 once it's on the computer its limit less on how much you can tweak the sound
The original has a lot more energy to it. It sounds "alive" while the digital one is too shy, but still a good rendition, yet lacks the presence of the big one.
It does look cool🕶
Pure Legend! Period!!!!...
Bad ass video!
I want one!
You could easily make the TR-08 sound like the 808. Not sure why he's selling you the TR-08 but didn't bother getting it to sound better.
THE KING OF THE 808! EGYPTIAN LOVER!
Fresh!
Guys, is this for real? THEY MADE A FREAKIN VIDEO TO PROOF THAT THE ORIGINAL 808 SOUNDS A THOUSAND TIMES BETTER THAN THAT CHEAP CLONE???
Don't think anyone is saying it sounds better - its not much different and considering the price if you want a hands on 808 then it's perfect!
No he actually did say that it sounds better than the original in the Roland video. I'm not hearing it!
It is $3000 better though?
Real vs Fake. Real always win but we live in fake times.
The 808 has alot more thump than the 08, but come on man, The TR-08 is the business. Roland did and outstanding job, I'll be getting one "JUST BECAUSE".
Supplies!
Crank the decay on that kick! 😎😎
poor egyptian lover.."yes..I took the money" XD
Still nothing like the real sound 🤩
the portable tr08 is dope but the 808 is more aggressive and punchy and it sounds way doper with the buzz and static
COOL
awe man...I was really digging the TR-08 until the real 808 kicked in. Granted, it seemd the 808 was leveled higher, but still, you can hear that desireable boom in the 808 which is just missing in the TR-08. I'll still get the TR-08 though because...$350 lol.
Love Egypt
OK, It not sounds as the original Analog TR-808, but for this MONEY, it SOUNDS Pretty AMAZING! Also, maybe some of you says the it sounds like a VST (it's not! in my opinion) but still it has the hardware format with the same design as the original, with the same tweak-ability, none of the VST-s or samples gives you this flexibility... anyway, I Love it!
Totally agree
Hey bro....much love for the pharoah rite here...from Iran & Canada... just wondering though, how the heck do I add measures when combining patterns into tracks..? I'm in Compose mode on the TR08, & shouldn't this thing just automatically keep recording played patterns until I press Stop/start Button...or how do you add more patterns/measures to a track...? Thx
Amazing how much better the 808 sounds.
I think growing up, I leaned favor more toward team digital. Idk of inexperience, lack of appreciation , or frequency these 46 yo ears can tolerate these days but i now appreciate analog technology now. The original 808 was so much more natural where as the digital was in tge direction of someone scratching on chalkboard.
Un sonido cool.
There needs to be special holidays for producers/DJs.
In this case, it would be August 8th.
it would be so cool if these companies brought the original units back out as a vintage limited release
cost/benefit of analog isn't what it used to be....
I dunno guys.i watched so many videos of him playing with the original hardware live. And the original 808 from the 80s still has more umf and richer sound. I dunno why. It's like comparing "Vinyl to music on cdjs or a controller ". That noise makes it more rich
Great Vid! But in compare starting at 03:57 i hear the cowbell of the tr-08 is a little bit lower tone than the original, isn't it?
Cool portable funk
Nice little gadget to practice on while on the move. But hands down the real 808 has that analogue warmth.
DOPE😎😎😎😎
Can we approach the TR-808 by manipulating the kicks TR-08's ? or other sounds? THX.
I think they both sound good....and different
that real 808 aint no joke dam
damn you should not have put these two side by side. The OG takes the cake
OMG at 3:36 3:49 the difference between the two machines is soooo obvious : 0 It was supposed to showcase they sound the same... weird. I prefer sampling the original machine with an analog sampler..
The 08 sounds good but is very polished, clean and modern. the TR-808 hits you in the chest, the transients are much more present, there is a slight saturation and almost compression going on, and I did adjust the levels
Haters, please stop. This is absolutely not a comparison video. He did not even match the volume levels - the 808 is BY FAR louder which some of you percieve as "better". Man, really - the 808 is like 10 times more expensive than the TR08. Check out them real comparison videos on the tube, most of you wont even pass the blind test.
It's all good but where are multiouts? Only the drum bass sound much fatter then on TR-08 (on this video). But why it is so small??
I think the notable difference comes from the different volume levels and settings
I wonder if Egyptian Lover goes home and only plays with his 909, because secretly he cant stand the 808 sounds anymore :D
Fakenewz
Dat smile after he adds the clap XD
Why did they use a different tuning ? In comparisation with the TR-808?
he masters the 808
I'm using the speaker on my phone but the original sounded fuller and more gritty. The newer machine sounds nice but is it better than a sample based NI libary ?
Tone B Actually I think a good sample library will sound closer to the original than this TR08.
TR-08 gets more respect when Egyptian Lover endorses it! And His Beat Goes Boom, Boom Boom!
I wanted hear that deep bass from this
Still wondering why EL was not in the 808 documentary... Either way, I still own a ton of his 12" vinyl.
