Behringer RD-8 vs Roland TR08: 808 clone final showdown

  • A final look at the RD-8 vs Roland's offerings. My previous video omitted the TR08, so only fair that I found a unit to put side-by-side.
    I promise this is the last one :)
    The TR08 sounds slightly louder in some sections in the final upload and I've no idea why - maybe something to do with video compression formats and mono/stereo files (the TR08 was recorded stereo and the RD-8 mono). All sounded perfectly equal in recording and editing so apologies for that. You can still hear the obvious characteristics of each. Recording, editing, rendering, uploading and compressing isn't an exact science - so please go easy on me - I get a little tired of comments moaning about volume differences when sometimes its purely down to difference in sound sources being reflected differently through an infinite number of monitoring situations.
    If the original waveforms aren't exactly the same the differences will be heard in a infinite number of ways... soz but that's just physics.. with a bit of biology and psychology thrown in just to confuse things. :). So listen to the sounds - not the volumes! I can measure, monitor, listen and tweak but they can still sound different coming out of your headphones/speakers... very annoying!!

    Excellent comparison…much better than the first one. The summary in the first couple minutes is totally accurate. I own a TR-08 and love it. The RD-8 looks and sounds good, and has several nice improvements over the originals. These are both excellent boxes with different pros and cons. The TR-8S is a great option for live performance; it has the same emulations, and also lets you mix and match sounds from the 606, 707, 808, 909 (and your own samples).

    I’ve got both and I see myself using the Roland more because of the auto fill feature, every x measures automatically add a fill. This is for me really useful in jam sessions when I need my arms and fingers to trigger other machines. I really miss this feature on the Behringer.

    I owned a TR-808 back in the day and - I may be in the minority here - I love my TR-8. Out of nostalgia I'd love a TR-08 or RD-8, but the TR-8 does just what I need, and I got it used at a cracking price (although not as little as I paid for my 808 back in 1988).

    Great video. Both sound really good.
    23:10 Huge difference between the two here. Happy that TR-08 can do precise timing to allow matching with existing songs. many songs have precise tempos e.g. 60.5. I would be surprised if Behringer couldn't fix this with a firmware update.

  • @dropshadow1932
    @dropshadow1932 4 роки тому +40

    The truth is. The TR-808 sound everyone recognizes and loves is not just the Roland TR-808. It is the 808 blasted through an SSL G4000 console, using their pres, EQ's, compression, and saturation by driving the drums. If you even watch comparison videos between two different TR-808's they will sound different due to age and condition. One is not better than the other, rather they just sound different. That classic sound is from the production process of this drum machine. Naked, an 808 sounds tinny, sharp, and lacks punch. Just my two cents. I love the 808 and the sound. But that classic 'Egyptian Lover' type electro sound is from heavy EQ and compression of a thin, snappy drum machine known as the TR-808. #nerdism.

    • @StarskyCarr
      @StarskyCarr  4 роки тому +6

      yep, you're right that's exactly why the Roland has a the option of a longer compressed style kick, and why the Behringer's separate outputs are great for adding FX and EQ to each sound ... still quite sexy little beasts through. :)

      Thank you for this. As someone who has quite a few toys in their studio facts like these are more important than the marketing points of each unit.
      I was considering the SSL channels soon anyway (albeit plug-in versions). I think somewhere close to original 808 and somewhere close to a real SSL console will give me great results. I was allllmost sold on the Behringer but I think I’m gonna go with the roland Altho the only thing for me is the multi outs. Do you think the multi outs on the Behringer is more valuable? Also, that sound of the Roland is night and day. Is it just the stereo vs mono? Now I’m thinking before I try to beef up my drums with a bunch of plugins I should make it stereo.

    • @damian-henderson
      @damian-henderson Рік тому +2

      If you use the separate outputs the 808 is beefy punchy and far from tinny running through an analog desk, never heard anyone say a 808 sound as such, many of those old records where recorded with raw 808 beats...

  • @jessejarrar
    @jessejarrar 3 роки тому +3

    Thanks for your time making this video. I had the tr08 and just couldn't get down with the tiny form factor. I'm used to bigger machines. Sounded great and wasn't bad past the occasional menu diving.
    I also had a TR8S. I can't imagine buying an rd8 or a tr08 apart from really needing to save the cash and pass on a TR8S. It's much more capable than both, but unfortunately doesn't have the 808 aesthetic visually like these 2 boxes.
    Still the TR8S is a monster! I kinda regret selling it but I already am swimming in drum machines!

    • @project-95
      @project-95 2 роки тому +1

      Yeah the TR8S covers all the x0x sounds and then some, I love it. Everything else is redundant. It's just a shame Roland keeps failing to deliver on something or other that everyone really wants, whether it's aesthetics / outputs / digital / analogue / voice limit of boutiques / monophonic sequencer on JU-06A but poly on SH-01A 🙃 / the list is endless

    I own both and used to own a TR-808. I adore the TR-08’s tiny size but the big difference for me is the hats and the mute and solo ease of use on the RD8. Apart from the BD & SD the main sound most use are the hi-hats. The open hat for me on the 08 is the most disappointing sound. Just not metallic / analog enough for me. Saying that the BD and SD on the 08 are stupidly good. The original TR-808 looked wonderful and is iconic in music history but it was so big for what it did. Mine was midied in. At the time I just sampled it and sold it. The 16 step buttons on the 08 are a nasty & tiny hard plastic that are too hard to push in. That said the size of 08 outweighs its minus points. Roland’s boutiques, like the Volcas are well useable with great portability and battery operation. The 08 also has loads of patterns available. 16x16=256 x A & B variations = 512!

    Because nearly all these Roland boxes are digital, I think Roland cloud is the way to go, instead of going with the D-05 for example. However, in the case of the TR-08, the physical buttons and knobs are a big plus, of course when compared to the VST.

    Good demonstration of the two. I have the TR08 and love it and have a RD8 on the way. You had to do a factory reset twice using the RD8 (the software you mentioned being worked out) that was probably unexpected. The TR08 has build in compression for every sound (awesome feature didnt see mentioned ). As for what to keep? Thats easy both because you can never have enough 808 .

    • @StarskyCarr
      @StarskyCarr  4 роки тому

      i really like both of them for different reasons. I can see you keeping both once the RD8 arrives. Btw I thought I mentioned the compression on the TR08 (maybe I cut it in an edit?) but it’s only on the kick and snare isn’t it???

    • @st0rmchild
      @st0rmchild 4 роки тому +1

      TR-08 compression is only on the bass drum and snare drum. Wouldn't make sense on most of the other sounds, but you can of course compress them however you like since you have separate outputs for every sound over USB.

    Well I’ll go with behringer when I found it on eBay for 200-250 Roland sounded good as well and really outdone behringers kick with that long decay but behringer got so much more which works for me(also I got quite big fingers) but as for sound I’m not really sure which one is closer to original 808 and to me they sound both nice.
    Great work sir

  • @thesrabbit

    I think stereo makes a big diff in the overall sound. An 8-channel mixer can be had for pretty cheap, and then maybe add a couple pedals as fx sends and that would make a pretty sweet setup. But that would make it probably 10 times the physical footprint of the boutique. I ordered the RD-8 because it seems more intuitive for “composing” (TM) beats. Then I can capture the MIDI in the DAW and use whatever I want for the drums sounds if I so choose. I’m hoping it will be a solid choice for that purpose, if it ever arrives.

    Everything in the RD-8 sounds really good except for the clave. The TR-08 clave sounds better where as the rimshot on the RD-8 sounds better. Despite the longer kick decay on the TR-08, I like the tone of the RD-8 better. Same for the snare. I actually like the overall tone of the RD-8 better. With that said, the TR-08 isn't bad either. @@vincentdewildenberg4529 It's been a year now since I've made this post. Since then, Behringer has actually improved (or fixed) the sound of the clave in the new RD-8 units. I now own an RD-8 and all of it's sounds are wonderful. It even rivals my original 808. With that said, it didn't take me long to trade in my TR-8 afterwards. I have also played around with the wave designer and I am able to get a longer decay on the bass drum, not as long as the one on the TR-8, but much longer than without the wave designer engaged. I really like what the wave designer does to the clap. However, it would have been nice if the wave designer circuit had it's own dedicated separate audio output instead of going back through the main mix output.

    I watched this video a couple years ago and thought the RD8 sounded more meaty, so I bought one. I recorded with it for about a year and never quite got what I wanted from it. Finally got the Tr-08 and sold the RD8 shortly afterward. The RD8 does sound fatter, but it doesn't nail the 808 sound like the boutique does. Most importantly, the Tr08 sequencer is tighter. The RD8 always seems a little sloppy, and at higher tempos you really notice something is off. But the Tr08 sounds like a record should, tight and groovy. You wanna dance to it. Roland got it right. On top of that the Tr08 won't make you go through the stupid multi-button push saving process for every pattern.

These capabilities of USB are absolutely jaw dropping to me. It’s something that not just demonstrates the far reaching territories that technology can travel to, but also the corners we can cut now since that sIngle USB Cable I’m using is sending my MIDI to and from my DAW, AND my separated individual parts are being captured so that’s what? NINE fewer 6.25mm cables??!? That ‘ALL over USB’ capability is the real selling point from my perspective, so keep that Boutique! THANKS FOR SHARING, great topic to make into a video!

    On the Behringer it reminds me much more on real 808 hats. Rounder, not that aggressive. This plus the overall grittier sound, the much better sequencer and individual outs would make my decision easy.

      Yes I got this feeling.
      But it all comes down to the bass drum for me.
      Starsky pointed out the quicker pitch envelope on the RD may sound better in a mix and he might be right from his demos. In isolation the 08 kik sounded clearly superior, but maybe too clear in context.
      I'm still undecided, though I did seem to like the RD full mixed better.
      Sequencer wins hands down

    The vst will take up cpu and then you got the latency to think about depending on what your trying to do. RD-8 probably edges it over the TR-08 for me because of build quality. Those Roland boutiques have sockets that are not very strong especially the usb and if you don't put it in a rack and leave it, it's guaranteed problems before you know it, which completely defeats the point of being portable and able to carry a few around to stick into a k-25m keyboard. Which is why I just decided I may as well get the UNO instead cos I aint lugging about a RD-8. Someone's going to do some pretty amazing stuff on the RD-8 once they learn't it as a instrument but can't see myself dedicating the hours to master it to it's full potential.

    The Roland is just too dang small for me. I like the tone shaping options of the Behringer and the individual outputs are awesome. I can run them into a plethora of stomp boxes and rack units. Also, the analog filter on the BEHRINGER is the deal sealer. There is nothing like real analog filters in real time. The bottom line is that even if the RD8 is only 90% close to the original 808, it sounds good enough for me and is big enough to jam with live without being overly careful to bump the wrong knob.
    I already own Roland Boutique SE 01 and D 05, so Roland has already received a fair share of my business. Those synths are great, but the feel a little cheap. My DeepMind 12 desktop, Neutron and VC340 are well built.

    Tr 08 is louder, crisper, and that cowbell and open hat is much better than the rd 8. I wish it had that 808 grit like the rd 8, but the fact that the rd 8 bass doesn't have the same oomph as the tr08 pretty much kills it for me. Which kind of sucks, seeing that the primary drum sounds, to me, sound better on the tr 08, cowbell included. While the rd 8's toms, claps, claves, cymbal, and rims sound better. Would be nice if I could just buy both 🤔

I don't care about that boomy kick since I don't do hip hop or house, so I guess it's the rd8 overall for me. Which sucks because I have room for the Roland firm factor more than the rd8... dammit

    The TR08 sounds brighter and louder but that could be because of some sort of compression? I prefer the kick drum on the TR08 personally. Overall I think they are both nifty machines but if I were to buy one it would probably be the RD8 because of the UI and the individual analog outputs. I also do like the wave designer. The clave and rim shot on the TR8 sound nicer IMO, especially the clave. The cowbell on the RD8 is definitely better IMO. The cymbals on the TR8 sound like crap compared to the RD8 - extremely digital sounding. Same with the open and closed hats. That said, even the RD8 hats don't sound that great compared to a real 808 or other analog drum machines like a Tanzbar or Vermona DRM mkIII.
    That said, I think something like a TR-8s or a used RYTM mk1 would be better because although they both cost more than either of these units, they offer so much more. I got a mk1 RYTM recently for $600 USD and it's amazing because each sound can have a sample AND analog synthesis, plus lots of sound shaping options, fx, p-locking, etc.

    TR-08 for me. Midi cc and all sounds available simultaneously, small size, audio over USB, plus it sounds much better, RD-8 sounds dull and muddy, lacking the crispness of a TR-808 especially on kick, toms, congas. RD-8 hats and cymbals sound ok though. Unfortunately for the RD-8 no amount of software updates will solve its major flaw - it doesn’t sound like a TR-808, especially apparent when you listen to the pattern shootouts at the end, RD-8 sounds lifeless and flat, just use your ears.

In a studio (and if you really do have one) you’ll know that you have to equalise the 808 to balance it out to fit in the mix. My point here is embrace ALL technology if you are a musician/producer (I’m the latter).
