Jen Campbell Thank you for this! I will never think of Peter Pan the same way again. (Also I recently wrote an adaptation of Peter Pan based on all these versions of the story. And I'm planning on minoring in classic literature in college and major in theatre in college and it makes perfect sense seeing as Peter Pan was a play character as well as one of the most interesting and important literary characters for not only children but adults as well.)
I commend you for the amount of work you put into this. It was completely mind-blowing. I never considered any of these points in connection to Peter Pan before but then they make much more sense. Lord, I do not know how to express how brilliant I thought this video.
Thank you! I did write part of my dissertation on Peter Pan (back in the day) but haven't revisited it for a while, so putting this together did take quite a bit of time. I appreciate you appreciating that :) x
As a mathematician, I often feel "pigeon-holed". I am so happy I have found Jen in this corner of the internet. I feel like I learn something from her every single video and she has changed the way I perceive and analyse everything. She makes me want to go back to school and write a hundred essays about everything i've ever read! Love these videos Jen. You give so much depth and reason behind everything you say!
This was fascinating! Peter Pan is one of my favourite stories and I love digging into things and analysing them. Any chance of this becoming a series? I'd love to hear your other thoughts on this!
This is honestly like having a super interesting and thought-provoking lecture. I love this series you're doing Jen, it never ceases to amaze me just how much you can read into the tales and how much more you can take away from it. Loved this, much love, K xx
Oh my goodness, thank you so much for your analysis and this amazing video! I've been anticipating this episode for a while now and you delivered beautifully! I just read Peter Pan for the first time this year and this makes me want to reread it again. While I didn't really arrive at a lot of the things you mentioned in this video, when I finished the book, I had developed quite a strong attachment to the story. Even while reading it, I felt that there were so many layers to it and certain elements of the story just stuck with me and I couldn't really understand or express why. I guess it is truly the sense of nostalgia, longing, childhood battling adulthood, growing up sort of thing that resonated then and continues to resonate now. It really wasn't a very "happy" book and the ending left me thinking about it for a while though I really couldn't explain why. This video helped to articulate some of my feelings about the story so thank you very much for that! :) Fascinated with reading it in the context of gender and performance as I really haven't thought of it in that way before.
this was really interesting, it's fascinating how dark so many children's books are when you really start looking into them. I think that a lot of the time authors, especially in the victorian era, would make statements or share opinions with symbolism in childrens literature that they wouldn't have been able to talk about in ",polite society".
Just found your channel today and I have to say that I'm obsessed! I love your book chats and the fairytale series it's all so interesting and your background research and analysis are top notch. I have listened to a lot of analysis on Peter Pan and I have never heard some of the ideas you brought up today. SO INTERESTING!!
I love it when you do these analysis videos on classics, Jen! Your video on Jane Eyre completely changed the way I experienced that book :) I'll admit - I've neder read Peter Pan. I never enjoyed the Disney film when I was younger and just haven't been inclined to pick the book up. But the layers you discuss in this video have definitely convinced me to add it high up on my wishlist!
This was one of the best videos I saw probably ever. Would you mind, if I link this video , when I put my review on my blog? It's so much more eloquent and well-thought out than mine will ever be :P Funny enough I do realize now that when we did the ballet of Peter Pan way back in the days I still did ballet, they actually wanted to specifically cast a girl for Peter and that Mr. Darling and Captain Hook were also played by the same person! It makes sense now!
Thank you for making such an amazing video! I would like to give it a little re-read since it's been ages! Thanks for the encouragement for that as well!
The fact that wendy "falls in love" with peter pan reminds me of how some aromantic people talk about understanding themselves and being their own "partners" in life. The children even talked about him not being capable of "desiring" anyone, not mattering the gender, so maybe that is something to add to this interpretation.
Another wonderful video, Jen! Peter Pan has always been a favourite novel of mine and has followed me from childhood to adulthood. Thank you for taking the time and effort to make this video and thank you for sharing your wisdom, I thoroughly enjoyed it! I would love to hear more about this topic if you ever feel like talking more about Peter Pan!
Utterly fascinating! I love these deep dives you do into well known literature and fairy tales. I mostly take stories as face value as I read for pure entertainment, but it's eye opening to see an alternative side to the meanings and histories of these stories. Thank you.
I'm so happy I've found your channel Jen. Your book recommendations fit my taste wonderfully, which has given me so much reading inspiration and reignited my passion. I have a particular interest in fairy tales and the psyche; this video was absolutely fascinating, thank you for making it. I shall continue to enjoy your channel, especially your fairy tale videos, for a long time I'm sure. Thank you again!
I LOVED this video. The way you speak and tell your analysis is really enchanting, it just makes me want to hear more about it. This is definitely one of my favorite videos of yours. I recently bought Peter Pan and it's now going up my tbr list.
Could you please please do a whole series on Peter Pan? I enjoyed this so much and would love to hear more about the layers in one of my favourite plays.
I'm getting caught up on your fairy tale videos and taking so many notes and learning so much. This is beyond fascinating. Thank you so much for doing this!!!
Whoa, this was so eloquent, fascinating and mindboggling to listen to. I almost always switch between tabs when I watch UA-cam and this has been the first video in a long time that I've seen in one go without doing stuff on the side! I really feel like re-reading Peter Pan now.
Wow, I love this. I read Peter Pan a few years ago and didn't like it but now I really want to re-read it with this video in mind. This is so indepth and fascinating, I didn't even notice the video was 26 minutes long. Slightly sad when it ended tbh. Really admire all the work put in to this video Jen, it's absolutely brilliant. x
You know you might find the movie and book versions of Howl's moving castle interesting. They both have theams of preformance (the movie representing them visually and the book through diologue) but in almost the oposite of Peter Pan as it was by being cursed to be an old woman that Sophie felt freed from society's expectations and embrased her own adventure. The story behind the book and its adaptation is also interesting as Dianna and Miazaki both lived through WW2 as children and use their respective craft to deal with that trauma but in diffrent ways. Yet even with their aproch being diffrent both manage to capture what the story is about.
I had never read Peter Pan, only ever experienced it through the Disney movie and Finding Neverland, but I think I'm going to pick it up and read it right away. Fantastic video, I'd definitely like to hear you talk more about it. :)
I've seen this video three times now and am still amazed at your intelligence and eloquence. Please please do a similar video for Alice! I've been waiting anxiously for a video like that since I discovered your channel. Your love for reading continues to inspire me everyday and your videos are what helped me get over a reading slump so thank you for continuing to make videos despite your busy schedule. Lastly, congrats on your wedding!! Your photos on instagram are the most pure depiction of love
Mind-blowing analysis! Frankly I could watch you talk about it for hours! I only read Peter Pan for the first time earlier this year, and I was surprised at how different it was from what I had in mind, and now after this video I feel I need to reread it soon. How great would it be if they made a movie adaptation that included all these elements that you mentioned! These in-depth analysis of classic books that you make are my favourite of your videos by the way; I'm still thinking about the Jane Eyre one! I hope you plan to make more in the future!
I'm completely mind blown by the concepts and ideas within this video. I really want to know more. Please do another Peter Pan video! Thanks for another great video 😊
wow, I never thought about Peter Pan in this way. You are always opens new horizons to fairy tales and everything. I feel like I never knew the world around me.
What a fantastic discussion! I feel like I MUST go to the library straight away and pick up a copy of Peter Pan. I've never read the novel and barely remember the Disney film.
Peter Pan is very very close to me in so many ways. Loved this analysis and really enjoyed your input. I actually love that Wendy was always played by a girl and that Hook was Mr. Darling and what that represented. Love the female analysis particularly and how it is represented throughout the story.
Currently digging through my shelfs to find my old copy of Peter Pan. I need to re-read it as an adult. Wonderful video, please concider making it a series and continue the topic. I would love to hear more of your thoughts.
Thank you so much for this video and the further - lots of food for thought. This is one of my favourite stories and you've given me so much to look for in the text. Will be picking Peter Pan up for a re-read very soon.
This is one of the best videos ever. Not only in Booktube. But in UA-cam. But in life. Seriously, I am deeply in love with you mind. Lots of love and gratefulness from Brazil. Thank you, Jen.
What I love about Peter Pan is that even if you take away the symbolism (which is really good btw) it's still an awesome story. There are so many layers to this short book. You could write about it for days. Wish we read this in school.
This video is so interesting and so useful - I'm studying Peter Pan in my Children's Literature module at university so have definitely now got some brilliant ideas to think about!
wow this was amazing! i can't believe i never realized some of this (not that this isn't a thoughtful analysis, it's just some symbolism is much clearer than i realized). this changes my view of the story. i love it!
Wow Jen, this was super interesting! I honestely had no idea about any of this in regards to Peter Pan. I love how I always learn something new from your videos. I really do hope that one day I'll be as passionate and knowledgeable about a certain subject as you are. Amazing video! :) xx
This was fascinating. I adore Peter Pan but wasn't aware of some of the elements in the story like Peter and Wendy were the same person. Thanks for the great video Jen!
i enjoyed this video SO much - thank you for making it, i really appreciate how in-depth and detailed it was. it was eye-opening and fascinating and made me want learn and analyse books more - would love if you did a video and in depth discussion on your dissertation (not sure if you have one already?) - but you make academic discussions fun and captivating! X
I was so afraid of this video because I love Peter Pan, but it was so damn interesting because I always thought of Peter as Wendy's soul, but never occured to me Thinker Bell too. Also when I read about all those rumors of Barrie I couldn't believe that, but I always felt like something bad happened to him, and I would go even farther to think that Peter really represented him, was his mother in her grief did things to him like Wendy's dad? now I'm confuse and need to go to class but damn I would rewatch this video later, thank you so much for this Jen!!!!
Thank you for this, it was amazing! So interesting the theory on Peter protecting Wendy from abuse, and representing a split self, especially as that is a popular coping mechanism for victims of abuse! To split yourself into several, or "disappear" during the abuse. Fascinating!
Thank you so much for putting so much time and thought into this video. I've never read Peter Pan, but always wanted to, so I'm officially moving it up my tbr to finally make it happen. Now I'm sure I will get so much more out of it, if I was just going itno it on my won. Little Jen will be sitting on my shoulder telling me: "Look. So much meaning, huh?" By the way you look so lovely in this video :) I like how the lipstick works with the blouse so well. Not that you don't always look lovely.
I absolutely loved this video! If possible, could you make more videos about this? I'd love to hear more of your thoughts on the story! Also, have you read the book, The Child Thief by Brom? It's a much darker retelling of Peter Pan and has a lot of graphic content in it but it's very well-written and your video reminded me of it some because in the very beginning, Peter rescues a girl from her abusive father by killing him and then offering her a safe place where there are other children, and then throughout the book it talks about other people that Peter "rescues" in order to enlist in an army against darkness, not in Neverland, but a place called Avalon, and there's also religious questions raised in the story.
Such a great video Jen! I am a mature student reading English literature and creative writing and the way the essay builds is better than one of my essays! 😉 Was also fantastic seeing literary theory bought to life like this. Thanks for making / sharing. Nx
Your analysis amazes me. It's so interesting to find out more about the way J.M. Barrie wanted the play. It makes you think of things in such a different way. A re-read is in order now I feel! More Peter Pan can never be a bad thing though. :P xx
Well that is one way to pump Peter Pan to the top of TBR list! Part of me wishes that i had read it beforehand because this is definitely coloring my read of it. Oh well. Lots of interesting points and i could sit here listening you for hours. The stage directions were really interesting detail.Thank you for the hard work and passion you put inside of analyzing this story.
Great video and thanks so much for making! I found it fascinating and very enlightening. Please make more videos like this! Would love to see more of this on your channel.
Peter Pan is a favourite for a lof reasons, the main one being that it inspired me to really commit to being a writer. This video was so worth the wait!
I have done a short study on Peter Pan myself during my studies at Uni, although it was in connection to adaptations. I like the ideas and arguments you have in this video! I find it very interesting, makes me love and understand the story more. I have read the play and I also have Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens and Peter and Wendy, as well as the play Peter and Alice. I am excited to read all these in the summer! I was wondering if you might be interested in doing a analysis on Alice in Wonderland? I would love to hear your ideas and intepreations on that story as well. I also hope you plan on making more videos like this in the future :D Great video :)
I really enjoyed this video, thanks for making it. I read Peter Pan for the first time last year and didn't make any of these connections, but I did get very cross with it, especially the ending. I think I might have to give it a reread at some point. I'd be very interested in hearing what else you have to say about Peter Pan.
lots of information lots of stuff I didn't know and hadn't thought about so now that my brain is properly gobsmacked. Thank you Jen. Your training us to think.
Thank you so much for this video. Since I started watching your channel, I have been convinced that we have very similar, if not the same, tastes in literature and learning and this video just proved it. I am so grateful for the work and research that you put into this; I adore Peter Pan and always have
This was brilliant! So worth the wait and I didn't pick up about Mr. Darling/Hook being one and the same but I do remember going to the movies to watch Peter Pan with Jason Isaacs and thinking that having him play both characters was brilliant - now I know why xx
This is a really interesting video, and a way I have never read Peter Pan - I only read it as a child so it was just a fun adventure for me then. The talk of separate parts of self - alters, sexual assault, the fight that peter can do and him helping wendy forget her trauma really made me think about Disassociative identity disorder.
This is amazing, I just want you to know how much I appreciate all the hard work you put into these videos! I love Peter Pan, and this video changed my view on a lot of aspects! And I do agree, that while it is a nice story for children, it is so much more impactful to read it as an adult! So again, thank you for making this video!
Just found this video again! Will you make more of these in the future please? (I love that you choose books I have to read for university too! Haha) xxx
Thank you very much for this insightful video about my favorite character in fiction. It has really moved me. Lots of love and best wishes from Madrid, Spain. You do excellent work.
I studied Peter Pan with my masters in Literary Theory last year and the teacher was extremely unprepared... Thanks to you, I feel like I've learned something amazing about the book I already loved. You should give guest lectures at Universities!
I loved this so much, Peter Pan is my favourite book and I love that I'm still able to learn more about it. Your thoughts are so interesting and it seems like you have so much more to say, would be fab if this turned into a series on Pan!
What a lovely analysis! You fascinated me quite, and I just realised you wrote a book that I own, Weird Things Customers Say In Bookshops, which I really enjoyed reading :) Thank you for putting so much time in your videos! I think I'll subscribe :)
These insights are so very deep in the human psyche and should be referred to throughout one's life. Much like some of Mark Twain's works which become relevant in so many different ways when one reads his books at different stages of life. I will see if you have also covered Pinocchio or any of Carlo Collodi's stories. Thank you for your videos and shedding light on these magnificent stories, Jen.
In your reading of Mr Darling as a sinister figure what do you make of him taking Nana's place in the dog kennel at the end of the novel? A form of penance for behaving animalistically? Great video
I'm planning to minor in classic literature when I'm in college and I'm majoring in theatre. Considering Peter Pan is both a literary character and a stage character it makes perfect sense. (I will never think of Peter Pan the same way again)
As someone who works with primarily American Indian students, I'd been so disgusted by the harm done by the Disney film that I'd just completely rejected/ignored the actual text. This video was so articulate and eloquent and fascinating, that, despite my misgivings, I'm definitely going to pick up the original novel thanks for all the hard work you put into this video!
Barrie's text is very of its time when it comes to his depiction of Native Americans. However, when you read it, consider this: I think that Barrie has Native Americans in Neverland as a comment on colonialism. The pirates try and steal the Native Americans' land, in the same way that Hook is encroaching on Peter/Wendy's territory (ie their body) in order to take it over.
THIS WAS FASCINATING.
+Tessa Violet 😘
I'm back. I can't stop thinking about this.
I'm back again. I'm mad more people haven't seen this.
I know right! I was just glued to the screen! She explains things so well
I commend you for the amount of work you put into this. It was completely mind-blowing. I never considered any of these points in connection to Peter Pan before but then they make much more sense. Lord, I do not know how to express how brilliant I thought this video.

This is exactly how I feel! Jen's videos always makes me feel as though I want to go back to Uni to do English Literature!
Ok. Thanks for your input. I disagree of course, but you are entitled to your own opinion ☺👍
+Brother Freedom do you need a hug?
Brother Freedom it's a shame you see this as destruction as it's truly not. It's a deeper understanding.
The fact that this lesson is open to everyone is mine blowing. Such an under-rated youtube video and content.
Can you possibly do a part two? I absolutely loved this video x
I agree. Part 2,3,4...
Keep it coming please.
+Kitty G thanks, Kaitlin 😘😘 x
I literally just learned more from a 26 minute video than I did throughout all of high school, thank you Jen this is incredible!!!
I mean...
*just applauds for five minutes

Enjoy the reread! x
Just found your channel today and I have to say that I'm obsessed! I love your book chats and the fairytale series it's all so interesting and your background research and analysis are top notch. ❤️ thank you, and welcome! x
*two years later* Jen, can you please make a part two video? Hearing more of your thoughts about Peter Pan would be great
That’s not really something I want to do at the moment - if that changes then I will. Thanks ☺️
@@jenvcampbell I understand. All the best with your current projects and stuff you have in mind ☺
I love it when you do these analysis videos on classics, Jen! Your video on Jane Eyre completely changed the way I experienced that book :)
I'll admit - I've neder read Peter Pan. I never enjoyed the Disney film when I was younger and just haven't been inclined to pick the book up. But the layers you discuss in this video have definitely convinced me to add it high up on my wishlist!

Fascinating video. Thanks, Jen! I've just ordered the Minalima illustrated copy of Peter Pan. Cannot wait.
A literary scholar at work! Lovely, and very informative! What a great book it seems. In fact, I never read it before, but I guess I really should.
Thanks, Anna! I hope you enjoy the book if you do decide to check it out. x

I talked about it a little bit in a discussion video I did with Holly on His Dark Materials, if you want to search for that :) x
thank you - i will do! :) X
Amazing analysis, thank you!
What a lovely lecture! Thank you for your insight!
Thanks for watching!
THIS WAS AMAZING. Not to treat you as an analytical vending machine, but...do Alice in Wonderland? Narnia?
I've spoken about Narnia briefly when I talked about His Dark Materials, if you'd like to search for that. x
Awesome video Jen! Thanks heaps for all that work !! Take care 🍕
This was beyond amazing. Thank you so much, Jen!
Thank you very much. I'm working on a project about Peter Pan. Your video and the references you mentioned and recomended are helping me a lot :)
This video was really well done! I read "Peter Pan" back when the readalong was announced, and your analysis greatly enriched my reading.
So much meaning, huh?"
By the way you look so lovely in this video :) I like how the lipstick works with the blouse so well.
Nx
Thanks, I did write part of my dissertation on Peter Pan (back in the day) but haven't revisited it for a while.
Your analysis amazes me. It's so interesting to find out more about the way J.M. Barrie wanted the play. It makes you think of things in such a different way. A re-read is in order now I feel! More Peter Pan can never be a bad thing though. :P xx
+Olivia Pope indeed never a bad thing x
Well that is one way to pump Peter Pan to the top of TBR list! Part of me wishes that i had read it beforehand because this is definitely coloring my read of it. Oh well.
Lots of interesting points and i could sit here listening you for hours. The stage directions were really interesting detail.Thank you for the hard work and passion you put inside of analyzing this story.
Thank you x
A truly wonderfully fascinating video Jen!
Great video and thanks so much for making! I found it fascinating and very enlightening. Please make more videos like this! Would love to see more of this on your channel.
Wow! I never really thought about this story in this way, ie. Peter and Wendy as one and the same. Really fascinating listening. Thank you!!
Peter Pan is a favourite for a lof reasons, the main one being that it inspired me to really commit to being a writer. This video was so worth the wait!
Glad to hear it was worth the wait :) x
Very interesting analysis! Thanks for sharing.
BRILLIANT!!!!! Loved this, Jen. Thank you.
Very insightful! Thanks for sharing!
Great video, Jen!
Thank you so much for this video. Since I started watching your channel, I have been convinced that we have very similar, if not the same, tastes in literature and learning and this video just proved it. I am so grateful for the work and research that you put into this; I adore Peter Pan and always have
This was an amazing analysis! Just read the book and came right to your video.
This is so so good!!! So interesting. It is one of my favorite books and had no idea about this :)
This was brilliant! So worth the wait and I didn't pick up about Mr. Darling/Hook being one and the same but I do remember going to the movies to watch Peter Pan with Jason Isaacs and thinking that having him play both characters was brilliant - now I know why xx
+Noelia Alonso Jason is SUCH a good Hook x
**Mind Blown** Thank you so much for all your hard work in making this! It is AMAZING.
Thank you x
Just found this video again! Will you make more of these in the future please? (I love that you choose books I have to read for university too! Haha) xxx
I love Peter Pan. I think I've always subconsciously realized these themes, but I found your analysis very interesting.
Thank you very much for this insightful video about my favorite character in fiction. It has really moved me.
Lots of love and best wishes from Madrid, Spain. You do excellent work.
Excellent! I really enjoyed this. Finally an in depth analysis of a book which Disney rendered as a simple tale.
I studied Peter Pan with my masters in Literary Theory last year and the teacher was extremely unprepared... Thanks to you, I feel like I've learned something amazing about the book I already loved. You should give guest lectures at Universities!
+Larissa S I do ;)
I loved this so much, Peter Pan is my favourite book and I love that I'm still able to learn more about it.
Welcome! Make yourself at home x
These insights are so very deep in the human psyche and should be referred to throughout one's life. Much like some of Mark Twain's works which become relevant in so many different ways when one reads his books at different stages of life. I will see if you have also covered Pinocchio or any of Carlo Collodi's stories. Thank you for your videos and shedding light on these magnificent stories, Jen.
please make a part two !!!❣️❣️
That was very interesting and illuminating! Now I think my re-read of Peter Pan would be a different experience
What an interesting analysis. Thank you, Jen.
I started to press LIKE even before watching ur video .. ur so good and thank u so much for ur effort and passion ur helping us big time.
In your reading of Mr Darling as a sinister figure what do you make of him taking Nana's place in the dog kennel at the end of the novel? A form of penance for behaving animalistically? Great video
That's just a pun on 'being in the dog house,' but yes it is a form of penance. :)
This video was so articulate and eloquent and fascinating, that, despite my misgivings, I'm definitely going to pick up the original novel
thanks for all the hard work you put into this video!
I am very late to this but I have finally read Peter Pan - this is such a brilliant video!
Brilliant and engrossing analysis! Thank you!
