Sounds like you guys need a new checklist before heading out for a rescue: 1) Are the fuel tanks full? 2) Do we have the keys? 😎
Do we have more than we need for the rescue? Better to have and not need than need and not have. Blame Matt.
Do we have snow chains??
Absolutely
I've seen a few times where they forgot to bring longer or additional recovery ropes. Still get the job done but made it harder.
Completely agree and I was going to post something very similar, spare fuel, keys & for crying out loud chains if you go out in the snow & ice. Rubber vs ice is no contest-the ice will win.First base in Europe to fit chains. Sorry for criticism but your procedures need tightening up.. ..because you have committed all 3 offences a number of times. You never forget to fill up with food though!
Great videoes & team though, I always tune in.
Mike
Since Matt has forgotten the keys on a number of rescues I think its only fitting punishment that on the next 3 rescues Tom must ask Matt "Do we have the Keys" every 10 minutes. This will reinforce the memory of checking for the keys in both parties. I love your videos, And yes I believe in tough love.
This is the correct answer, lol
Put it on a continuous loop that both of them have to listen to for the entire next 5 rescues
Going AND Leaving
🤣😂🤣😂 came to the same conclusion
Tom should have to dress like a key and start flipping a sign “I shouldn’t have forgot the keys” like those pizza restaurants or now open guys at the busiest intersection you got.
Kevin lemon’s comment punishment sounds fitting to me as well as annoying Matt and entertaining us
Boss being a coach and a leader, feeding his wife while she drives, making work fun and enjoyable for everyone involved and no one getting even the slightest bit upset about a little bit of vehicle damage. So much respect.
He did throw Tom Tom under the bus pretty hard though
Matt neglected to insure that the keys were in hand .
Matt would be my perfect boss. such a lovely guy
Tip for getting cell phone service. Lean your phone against the windshield of the vehicle… the anti shatter properties help pick up signal. It’s even better if you take the phone out any protective case. I live in the backcountry with limited cell service, it always brings a spotty bar service to one and 1 bar to 2
Put a phone on a long stick and get it as high as possible.
Open your phone as a hotspot and make the call from a phone linked to the hotspot, or from the radio info system if it has a bluetooth link.
You can make a dish shaped reflector out of aluminum foil for extra range.
Text messages work better than voice. Your phone will try several times to get the text message through.
Satellite Phone second most important piece of equipment right after #1 - Personal Location Beacon (PLB)
Tom should not be punished for forgetting keys until he's either: 1) forgotten keys more times than Matt has or 2) run out of gas more times than Matt has.
Haha
True.
And the captain always takes full responsibility for the ship.
Yup, cut Matt come temporary slack for now...
After 36+ years in the military I feel like I can speak to your problem like others have said. YOU NEED A CHECKLIST!!! I've been watching you for a while and it drives me crazy when you get to a job without the equipment or keys that you need. After a while it falls on the boss for not making changes to avoid the same problems. Still love you guys. Keep it up!!!
Maybe Matt should be punished then. 😀
You're talking to a man that hates to wear safety glasses or use torque wrenches. Checklists are a bridge too far for Matt.
@@percyfaith11 Yeah not gonna lie, not wearing safeties is super cringe.... its such a simple piece of equipment that it boggles my mind they dont get used around all power tools.
@@Fanta.... some will just keep getting lucky, some will keep getting lucky until they don't.
Agreed.
Tom needs to have a comically large key-shaped key chain that he has to use for a whole year, this will be a visual reminder for him to reflect on his key wrangling failures.
This : )
Love how Matt coached Jefe through the obstacle instead of just taking over. That's a good leader.
But also crazy to see how differently both reqcted when sliding back down
This bunch uses team work to get things do . Congratulations

The fact that Ed knew exactly what had happened the moment the hole in the tailgate was pointed out feels like it could be a farmers insurance commercial, “…we’ve seen a thing or two“
I had this same thought. Lol
I laughed so hard at that ending.
MOVE THE VEHICLES IN THE WAY!!!!
my exact thought
Chain it on!!!
I love how Ed worked out how that dent was made in the tailgate in an instant. That's the wisdom of age for you.

Soooo happy that I learned the trailer coupler lesson watching SOMEONE ELSE do it 😂
You guys are the best 4x4 channel going. Dumb question for you folks. Why is it you never use chains when dealing with ice?
Tom's punishment should be to operate the camera while Matt washes the Worlds Largest Heavy Wrecker after it's maiden mud recovery voyage. The Captain of the ship is ultimately responsible for the mission, Matt.
Great content. Keep 'em coming. Thanks for sharing.
I seem to re-call Matt forgetting keys a few times, and, in Tom-Tom’s defense, he stated that he didn’t hear Matt tell him to take the keys.
Also, whatever “punishment” is inflicted upon Tom should be equally applied to Matt. That way neither ever forgets to take the keys, again.
no its better for the leader/boss to deflect blame to his subordinate so he doesnt look bad. never take responsibility and always blame others
@@MightbePettingmyCat you know it’s all in good spirits right? Like he’s not actually that mad at TomTom, they’re just having some friendly banter, and the “punishment” makes it fun for the audience.
I think the punishment is this comment section 🤣
@@ethanpicken6992 i had no idea. what else can you tell us about this business you have no involvement in? glad to be talking to an employee of matts offroad recovery
I love how Ed immediately knew what had happen to that tailgate. Something tells me that Ed has some stories about trailers gone wild.😂😂😂
guys I am from lebanon I always watch your videos, Last night I got stuck in 35cm of snow on a hill i was going up with a cherokee 2008 but I managed to go out of the problem and went down without damaging the jeep. your videos helped me a lot thank you
Are there good trails to drive in Lebanon? I'm going to visit someday.
No 'punishment' for Tom. As many others have already said, Tom (and Matt) should devise a checklist and a system of accountability to make sure that all necessary equipment, including keys, make it out on the trail with the crew! Great job by all at Matt's Off Road Recovery! Thank you for sharing your adventures with us!
Nope, Tom should be Keel hauled on a toboggan :)
This was a management issue.😅
Punishment is pizza and beer.
When flying my airplane, you always used the checklist so you didn't miss anything. You need a checklist that gets checked everytime you leave the shop. The first thing on the list should be fuel supply.
And don't forget about the saftey/survival equipment just in case you get stuck.
Great minds
Excellent point. I will be working on that.
Polishing the snow with naked tires and you ends up with ice. God night.🤣😊 Best regards from Norway.
Leave him on the hill. Matt has nerves of steel, and doesnt sweat the things he cant change. His good nature is the reason i watch.
This is a prime example for the importance of closed loop communications in team operations. Never assume what someone heard you when giving instructions. Always require a response. If no response repeat the instructions. That IS the team leader’s responsibility. In other words, not Tom’s fault. Teams succeed and fail together.
This ☝☝☝☝
Mostly they fail because of leadership, and the escalation goes up the higher up in management it goes, exponential failure. In this case Matt's pretty much top of the line so he's the peak of failure here. 👍😁
Agree, now tell my wife that.
Does that mean your wife is in charge?
And a sign Got the Keys?
Tom's punishment is to remember to ask Matt if he has completed the checklist.
Ed snapped that One " Wow Trailer come Loose"! 👏 👍👍👍👍👍
The perfect video to show what insanity looks like. Doing the same thing over and over expecting a different result.
Someone might want to tell Matt about tire chains and how they help improve traction in the snow.
Love how Ed called exactly what happened with the tailgate! He’s seen enough in his lifetime to know exactly what happened.
This is not just a Tom problem. You guys need to have a checklist in your vehicles for some standard items (gasoline, keys, etc) needed on recoveries. Go through that checklist before you allow yourself to leave the shop. Also, suggest carrying a pair of boots modified with 3/8" lg - #8/#10 hex hd machine screws in the soles for these occasions.
Checklist all the way. Gas, keys, water, food, communications gear, recovery gear, tools. Just like a preflight checklist on an airplane.
Yeah there's a reason pilots use checklists every time.
I said the same thing
Yep these guys keep passing these issues down from person to person, this is not the first time so its not a Tom issue!
Even a funeral director i know have a list like that for each of their cars....
As someone who grew up next door in Nevada. I grew up when you still had HUBS to get out and lock in on my grandpa's vehicles. So outdoor stuff is not new to me. But watching these vids I still learn a lot about how to get out of messes. Your calmness is amazing. Good job to all your family and friends and employees.
Same sentiments. Also, I still have "lock out" hubs on my 1988 Toyota "Truck" as Toyota called them back before they had names.
i was on the SAR team that saved them! Have been waiting to see the vid from you guys!
I was in a SAR unit that rescued many people from trucking mishaps, but as here, we rescued people, not vehicles. It's nice to see the vehicle rescue part.
Tom needs to design a laminated checklist to be filled out before every recovery.
Matt doesn't listen to Tom Tom
If your going to blame Tom, my suggestion would be to get Tom to make up a checklist of stuff you guys need before each rescue. Get it laminated, supersize it if you have to and mark it off before you leave every time to make sure you have everything.
You need a checklist Matt. A morning equipment checklist, and a calls checklist. Put someone in charge of each thing, then follow up before you leave.
Tire chains on front, 10 minutes on drive out⛓️
MOR recovery checklist:
FUEL, (just fit up a pair of fuel can carriers on every second rig)
KEYS, (on a commically oversized key ring- idea shamlessly pinched off another subscribers comment)
1X SET OF SNOW CHAINS, for those ice recoveries you guys do every other year...
Love the channel, keep up the good work 👍
There's a gentleman in Colorado that has you guys to thank because if not for this channel, I would NOT have had the confidence to get him unstuck last night, just simple stuck in the snow but you can damage a lot doing this stuff. I realized when talking to this guy...I watch too many recovery videos because I sounded like I do this as a job. He was a bit nervous and I was like, "Pfft no worries, I know where to tow from since this vehicle has no good recovery points, lets keep in mind this strap is going to pull across and I don't want to pull off your bumper. Okay this is going to be a nice easy pull, I need you in neutral with your wheels turned this way, brakes shouldn't be needed but dont run into me and don't run over my strap." :)
Just make sure your tow points on both vehicles can withstand the forces but good job, lol it's crazy the things we subconsciously learn from UA-cam videos isn't it😅
You learn something new every day. Just because we don't notice, doesn't mean we're not learnin'! Good job on the recovery. Next thing you know, you'll have your own channel and be doing UA-cam crossovers with the Utah recovery channels. 😉
Tom should not be punished, he is helping to create the drama that makes this my favorite UA-cam channel. If fact he should be rewarded. Watching these guys work reminds of my childhood watching the RoadRunner cartoon, Matt is Wil E Coyote!
100%
Why not Foghorn the big Rooster?
Nah. No punishment is no fun. It’s got to be something sick, embarrassing, and funny. All of you go bowling and he has to wear a ballerina costume while yelling STRIKE! on his every turn.
Duuuude... backing up the hill (16:00m in.. ) Genius! Knowing the engine is your pendulum and using it like that?!. Absolute mastery.
The CGI mushroom cloud made me spit out my drink 😆
Tom is feeling bad already. He should get all the keys made and put them in his pocket. He's a good guy! I love watching you people!!❤😂
As many times as Matt's forgotten stuff and jeopardised the timeframe of a recovery... I'd say Tom *deserves* none. Fill up your fuel tanks EVERY recovery, Matt -- you're the captain of this pirate ship, lead by example! 😆
They should have a bulk tank in the yard, that the gate is wired in to, the only way to open the gate to leave is to get fuel 😂
The dude doesn't even wear a jacket in the hills when it snows or rains. It is so dumb to not be prepared for all situations
A good leader takes all responsibility for his team, no punishment for Tom, from now on every recovery go over everything and make sure you have everything needed for the recovery! Your a great leader Matt and everyone makes mistakes! Great job getting all the Jeeps out safely! ✌🏼❤️🙏🏼
I think the punishment is more for content than anything else, because this is technically a media company now, as much as it is an off-road recovery company, which I think is reflected in the punishment they picked because I've seen quite a few options on here that wouldn't make for a super exciting content, but forcing Tom to build a bird house and pretty much the exact opposite way he would go about such a task is pretty good content and honestly not that much of a punishment
Yeah that forward momentum is your best friend, I love your words, "yeah we don't need that up there do we".😂😂
You are the boss Matt!
It's on you ! Why punish Tom?
Matt, don't you have fuel issues?
Just saying !
Maybe a check list is needed before you leave the yard.
A big sign next to the gate.....
FUEL ?
KEYS ?
🤔 🤣
Since it's Matt's off road recovery......Matt should be held responsible for the keys!!!
4:35
Everyone makes a mistake, lessons learned! We love all you do to help Matt and his crew! Good job!
I just wanna say that your videos are so uplifting and really help when im feeling depressed. Thanks for sharing your fun adventures with all of us.😊
This ⬆
Matt, as the leader of the group, should develop a "check list" of everything that may or will be needed on the recovery that is not already loaded in the rescue vehicles and go over that check list prior to leaving the shop! Tom-Tom did NOT hear the order and therefore is not responsible for the missing keys.
Tom gets no punishment, a lunch at most. He is an excellent addition to the team . Meanwhile, Ed is like the dad you can’t hide anything from, he knows in a sec 😂
Been there, done that, lol. The boys could not understand when I knew they were up to something.
Exactly! I'm very impressed with Ed. He saw & instantly recognized that the damage is from trailer.
Is this Tom’s burner account? ✌🏼 😂
@@Budgetpamore hahahaha. Lol Good one.👍
This is the kind of team you need to build. Mistakes will happen, you just adjust and move on. Respect!
Wow, when I first saw this I truly thought the jeep really blew up. My heart was pounding!
For a guy who lives where it doesn't even snow, Matt's ice-driving skills are insanely impressive. But if you had snow chains, that job would've been done in 5 minutes. I bet the Morrvair with chains would go about 90% of wherever the Bombi could go.
I was going to post the same. It seems like a pretty common sense thing to bring with you when you are going to face ice and snow. Had those fellows had even cable chains, there would be no need of a rescue. Then again, I guess it would make for boring youtube videos.
chains and a good jacket. Stop pissing about.
Actually chains will do no good in this situation. The chains work on snow, not on ice. On ice the chains will break. And the tyres will be damaged.
While I do believe chains could help in this situation, a vehicle with tires+chains is not even comparable to something track driven like theBbombi. The footprint with tracks allow you to float over basically any depth of snow, where as even with massive tires aired down tires you're gonna have issues burying your frame in deep snow.
@@YavorM-Yash, I live in a very snowy, icy climate. We use chains on ice a lot. They do work on ice, and they don’t break. I don’t know where your theory that they break came from. Maybe where you are chains aren’t very strong, but in America chains are very strong.
It's great seeing this channel blown up. Always a clear effort put forth and all the while its being documented.
It’s amazing no matter how hot or cold it gets Matt is always in jeans and a short sleeve shirt 😂😂😂
Your teams should add a satellite communicator like the Garmin Inreach or Zoleo to each of your rigs. Then you can send text messages from wherever you are and if you get into real trouble you've got the SOS feature to call for more help.
In some vids you can see a Garmin inreach mounted in the morrvair, I don't know if those can communicate if you have more of them?
@@d99940 yeah, you can communicate with other people. The zoleo is the best tho
Love my ZOLEO.
50 watt Gmrs radio and cell signal boosters would be fantastic comms additions
Inreach is a great little device. It's saved me once already.
I believe the responsibility for the keys is down to the the boss MATT!
Your not getting out of this one Matt ! Boss guilty!
@18:36 "is that one of them diesel ones" lmaoo
I enjoyed this video and I know it would not have been as fun but studded tires work great. Chains also work when you get stuck.
Complicated systems fail for complicated reasons! Tom-Tom didn’t fail - the system failed to safeguard against the keys being left behind. Tom discovered a weakness in the system and should be rewarded for helping to make the new system stronger and more fault tolerant :)
No punishment... it's your fault. When an employee is not working up to expectations, first check to see what YOUR doing wrong. You need to have, and use, a checklist every time you leave for a recovery. keys, gas, weather-appropriate clothing, emergency gear, did I say gas? Been following you guys for a while. Thank you, thank you, thank you for the hours of entertainment.
Great recovery, as always! You're right about the use of caravan: in France they use it (caravane) for both a camper trailer or a string of vehicules doing a long journey together. Here in Quebec, the mostly french-speaking part of Canada, we use the word "roulotte" for a camper-trailer but we use the word "remorque" for a trailer not used for camping/living. Now you can "word-drop" french words in your videos! Cheers!
Matt I believe you ment a Convoy in place of a caravan. But your explanation was spot on . I would LOVE to work for a man like you. Much respect
Matt; Hint from a guy at least your dad's age. Get you shoulder examined by a doctor. I say this as a man who has had one shoulder replaced and one shoulder repaired in the past three years. Allowing an injured to go untreated will lead to much grief in the future.
Matt still thinks he is indestructible.
FACT! As a 57 yr old who ignored a right shoulder injury for 40 years (yes I was that stupid) and has now suffered left shoulder injury, the combo has left me damn near useless. Putting on coats is hard, not that that is an issue for Matt (hahaha) but I too am at the point of requiring a left shoulder replacement at a minimum to be able to keep working. Painful and well it sucks. Get that shoulder looked at/fixed up now, don't wait, you will regret it!
@@dextermay4007 And he's in his 40's, which technically is no spring chicken at that point. I'm well past my 40's, late 50's for me.
Yup I agree
@@dextermay4007 he does pretty well!
Tomtom’s punishment should be to formulate a pre-recovery checklist. You should have a routine that occurs before EVERY call to avoid mistakes like this. Using a challenge response method to complete the checklist will involve two parties and greatly reduce the opportunity for mistakes to occur. This is what we do in aviation for each step of the flight. You guys have already employed this tactic with your 6 steps when entering a customers vehicle. Just take it one step further and implement a checklist for each phase of your recoveries. You guys are an incredible team and I think this would be a great step to increase your efficiency.
Agreed. Install checklist on dashboard with toggle switches red and green LEDs. Then entire crew can see status. Hook or acrylic box in clear view with customer keys. QED...
I thought that was Miss Lizzy job.
Matt is one heck of 4x4 driver. Looking at him driving the Morvair sideways in icy and complicated terrain...I said damn!
My dad would make me clean the inside of the work van even though the next day it would get trashed again. It only took once to learn that lesson. I find that making list's is the key to being consistent.
It was actually really impressive how far Matt made it up in reverse in the Morvair. That thing is a beast.
Actually?
The amount if floatation and footprint that thing has is insane, I bet he would've made it if he aired down some more
In ice like that on the rocks, makes you wonder if having chains would help him get some bite
@@DavesW cold rubber on icy rocks is a bad combo. Metal is a universal problem solver =D
My vote... Give TomTom a generous raise for all of his hard word and dedication. Think of how many hours of frustration he has saved you from. Don't focus on this event.
I love how the rig just drivers itself off the trailer 😂
Tom should be in charge of creating a new full proof company policy that ensures the recovery team has EVERYTHING they MUST HAVE in order to complete a TYPICAL vehicle recovery.
Communication takes acknowledgement. Just because it was said does not mean it was heard. You sir ( Matt ) are ultimately responsible. So... when leaving, have everyone say keys , keys, keys? Thanks for the great content. No punishment for Tom.
Completely agree
Absolutely this 👍
Yup that's what I do before locking my vehicle to venture into the back country on foot , I've got my keys I've got my keys, I've got my keys 🔑🔑🔑

since when do vehicles need gas and keys?
Agree
@@neilvetter662 hahaha
I worked for Mouradian Auto Salvage for a lot of years, and we use the chains even in the bud to help us get through Apache Junction, Arizona
Tom should get a raise. He’s the only guy still working for your shop. Lol.
Also this is more your fault than Tom’s. How hard is it to implement a checklist?
You really had me flinch when the jeep hit the other jeep with the explosion. 😮😂
Jamie's comment when they realise no keys. "This is like normal life for us" perfect.
I'm just amazed Matt's hairs not completely grey. Good job guy.
7:10 that section is all rock if I remember right. Some of those slick rock areas will be a nightmare in snow.
And you are real lucky they weren't at the bottom of the sand hill. You don't get back up that hill unless you have a light dune buggy. But I almost would have taken them out that way, there is only about 10-12 river crossings but it's all pretty shallow.
Tom gets NO punishment... regardless of the team members, the Coach is ultimately responsible! Matt needs punishment for not confirming everyone did their assigned job!
1 video every day for a week seems appropriate!
Thanks for sharing 🇨🇦
Perfect
Sadly have to agree sorry Matt
agreed, sorry Matt 😂
Yup.
An employer needs to be a good communicator. It’s Matt’s responsibility to confirm that his instructions were received, not assumed.
What a long day! Deffinately one of my favorites! Great driving and teamwork by all. So many obstacles! My finger would hurt from bumping my right temple thinking through this. LOL Thanks again for your great content. PS...driving down that bowl reminded me of my adolescent days riding my skateboard in a bowl...keeping the momentum so as to not fall/slide downhill.
Watching Jefe spin, my internal monologue, “you’re just making ice”
I look at situations like this one and think I’d love to try with my Tundra and my winter tires. I think I’ll start wintering in Utah lol
Never crossed my mind that Matt could use some tire chains until now.
Anybody that goes out in the snow should have at least a pair of snow chains
The boss is responsible for making sure everyone understood their task and has carried it out as required. I have driven many times in a lot of snow and ice in the Alps and Norway. I can't believe those Jeeps are not on chains heading into that area.
Not the first time they forgot the keys.. Top down. It's the bosses fault. :)
Agreed, on those critical tasks you should always get confirmation the instructions are understood. Even when the instructions are as simple as grab the keys
Couldn't agree more. Considering how long they've been doing recoveries one would think they would be better organized and prepared. I would not blame any one person as it's a team effort with each person having strong and weak points.
@@markellison143 Confirmation is key.
Sorry Matt, this is on you.
Ok at 19:50 y'all got me. I was so invested into the dang video I actually got a little jump 😂
It's the Captain's job to ensure all necessary equipment is on hand. You need to practice closed loop communication.
It's not Tom's fault - :) Matt's the boss - buck stops there. :)
The boss gave the order... and someone didn't follow it.. so nah.

@@markwilson4710 As an old guy, let me tell you the problem with that (from experience), stuff like that fades into the background, becomes invisible, it's just human nature. That's why checklists work a little better, as long as you remember to look at the checklist of course. Maybe if they'd put their keys with the customer keys it might help. But then we're back to remembering to do that. It's a vicious cycle😁
I've been there! "I'm gonna be ok!", when it it very obvious that you are in fact, not ok.
As the team leader you are responsible for the operations. Perhaps in the future you could make a habit of checking with the person in charge of the keys on that job, before you leave the shop? At any rate, Tom Tom should probably buy some tacos for everybody!
Having raised five kids of my own and been a boy scout leader, I feel Matt shares responsibility by not making sure that his instructions were received and understood.
Scouts motto: Be Prepared!
Boomer Generation Boy Scout Leader Flex? Impressive 🦾
Did you just compare TomTom to a boy scout? :(
Wait until Matt reads all of these comments. He’s in the dog house. Put a check list clip board in each vehicle before leaving the shop! 😊
I just love how Matt speaks. All of his words are thought out and intentional. Just a genuine guy.
You could make a permanent list of things to be sure you have before departure posted on your dash which would save you all sorts of grief.
Tire Chains and Winter Tires on all 4, they make a huge difference, especially for recovery vehicles. Please, at least keep chains in the vehicles, we don't want to lose you, guys and gals ... love your videos. While you're at it, maybe get some of those mini chains that fit your boots too for those slippery slopes. As for the keys ... we all make mistakes, keys happen.
Tom is the sharpest pencil in this bunch and much undervalued imo, just because he is quiet and doesn't show off all the time. It's really easy when you give orders out to just check that they have been received. Also if it's the most vital piece of equipment, how about checking before you set off, "You got the keys, Tom?"!!!??
Matt needs a seeing dog with brains
Give Tom a raise and let him run the operation
Tom can work a computer, and read instructions, and everything :-)
Great spot you found!!! I'm amazed at how the folks found the copper back during those days.

He definitely replied out of experience.
I think the consensus is no punishment for Tom. He felt bad enough and he didn’t even hear when he was placed in charge. Always assign two people to important tasks. Also, it might be time to invest in some chains or bring some cat litter at least when it’s ice and snow. Loved this video.
