Mignola, is a master of shape. He’s dam near an abstract artist, but no one has a better understanding and application of form. My mind is continually blown.

I'm the guy ...at the 2001 San Diego Con who told Mike that John Buscema was a fan of his work. Before I went back to Big John's table....Mike wrote a comment in a small sketchbook he was selling that he wanted me to give to John . The comment was something along the line of.."..We are just pretenders...you're the real deal". I gave the book to John & he immediately asked me where Mike's table was and we walked right over to meet Mike. That's when Johnny B. told Mike about the breakfast meetings with him & Mort Drucker in New York which they called.. The Berndt Toast Gang.

I was at the NYC Comic Con where Mignola and McKeever were tabled next to each other and heard the conversation where they said they should do something together!! When the Eddie Current backstory came out in Metropol I was even more excited than the average fan was because of that moment I witnessed!

I had comics when I was a little kid in the mid 70s that mostly were from my father's stacks, I would buy a few at the corner store but mainly I read his. He died in 79, and there was a bit of a gap until about 14 or so, I started going and buying them for myself in '85, and the first things I pulled off the rack was the first couple of issues of the Rocket Raccoon mini series. Couple of other things but I really loved that comic, and Mike made a definite impression.

The original sketch or layout for a project piece is always better because you're under no pressure when doing it. You're free to be messy and creative. The second draft always comes out stiff because you're consciously trying to be perfect.

Thank you very much for hosting this! Great to hear all of you talk about your art and, of course, Mr. Mignola's art :) Also great to know that he's a fan of Alex Niño! Awesome!!!

I met Mike at a con in 2013 and there was no line at his table at all, I actually had never seen what he looked at like at the time despite being a big fan of his work, and I was questioning if that was actually him shuffling stuff around behind the table. He was very cool despite my awkward attempt to figure out the situation and then stumbling over what to say.

Very cool. I met Mike once at the Wizard Chicago Comic Con (I think he was there for the announcement of the Hellboy movie, or some promo for the movie -- this was before the first one)... I was talking to Gary Gianni and Mike came up to talk to Gary. I said "Hello", but mostly got out of the way so he and Gary could talk.

Mix some red watercolor with some red acrylic or oil. Its better to create paint mixes before starting.

re 1:15:33 - hah! Oh well that's a shame though. I don't mind being a fly on the wall in those situations. i was pleased to get to sit next to Mike at one of my first pro appearances at a con at the dinner after, I don't know if I talked much but he was one of a bunch of people who's work I admired who were there. Just listened a lot as I recall. That was fine. Talked to Mike a little, don't remember what about though now, it's been a while!

I wonder how those pencil drawings of Mignola's that you show near the beginning would look painted using the method that Ariel Olivetti uses.

  • @roguegallery7519

Yep, if its thought for pencil it should stay in pencil, but they could aways use it as a tonal plan to start a painting from zero.

I met Mignola at a comic shop back in the very early nineties and he told me that the Hellboy name came out of wanting to give the character he was drawing the dumbest name he could think of.

Alex Toth is one of the greats. I've very surprised Mignola wasn't hip on him.

    • @ArtofComics

@Ladiglich Bernd Yes, compositionally speaking I can see that Mignola has a frazetta placing of objects, but I'm agreeing with what Frazetta told him if I were to look at mignola's art I would initially think Toth much more than Frank's work.

Working on something new and hope one of the vets/company will catch a glimpse of it and know its groundbreaking....image didn't seem to interested in it or just didn't know what they were looking at...soon marvel or the likes will see and dominate this space..which will be sad...
