I’ve scoured the Internet for information on the Ventura overhead, always hoping to find a similar story to mine. Near the end of 1977 to maybe the beginning of 78’ the swell steadily rising from early morning, I surfed the biggest wave of my life @ 20+feet. At least a half mile or more from shore. The left had closed out leaving an immensely long wall collapsing with an open right. This was around noon or so in the day less than five people outside, which can easily leave one by them self to navigate where to sit for the next set. Fortunately I was able to catch the last wave of one set, after which I wanted more and paddled myself out into no man’s land - meaning, I didn’t know where to sit. Hence, the following set I took on the head broke my urethane cord leash and swam in the half mile to find the road we had drove in on early that morning was washed out. I wish I could find an archive picture of that day because I remember seeing people with long lens cameras - no such luck yet. Oh yeah, last but not least, there were whales breaching that day - so memorable ❤

I’ve see it once that big. Sets connecting from overhead to ventura point on January 5 2023. Google that day and see if it looks the same. That day broke the all time harvest buoy record for most west on direction & also largest height and period for that west direction.

I have surfed The Overhead since the early 80's🤟.Not many videos as don't want to attract more people many of whom will not be prepared for the long tiring paddle, insane wave pounding deep water hold downs and sharks.I have had to leave quick several times due to Big GW sharks patroling the reef out there. That said newbies Do Not go out to this outer reef.Newbies go a few miles north to Mondos.

More people? It barely ever breaks. Sharks? Long paddle? Not any more difficult than paddling up the point at Rincon after getting a wave through the inside of the cove. "Several times due to Big GW sharks" - you're a kook and you should go to Mondos.

Anyone who has gone out at the reef on a big day knows it breaks far out.Have had to get out due to GW's.Facts are facts.Have a great 4th of July.

@@steveteeceebee670 Anyone who has gone out at the reef on any day at any size knows it breaks far out because that's where the reef is, far out. I've dove, fished and surfed that reef for 40 years and have yet to see a white. Not saying they're not around, am saying your exaggerating the number of sightings. You're the only person I've ever make this claim, online or in person.

Started surfing out there in '81 after surfing for a couple years.First time saw a big grey fin about a foot and a half out of the water swimming steadily at the same depth on top 150 feet westerly. It swam back and forth getting a little closer each pass.Took next set wave in praying.Second time my buddy and I were out there on a great west swell.Fin popped up,it patrolled around steadily on the surface and we paddled in .I was bumped and bloodied from the sharks skin on the leg from an 8 foot GW at C Street 5 years ago .Ask the paddleboarders and kayakers about GWs if you want verification of GW's in the area.Hope you don't have to find out the hard way about the GW's.Have a good Saturday Saturday Mike.
