I am new to the format and this gave me much insight on some boardwipes here as well as edict and discard effects to a lesser degree since those are used in spacific decks. Thanks!
I have always been a proponent of mass discard's viability, specifically in mid-power, as opposed to competitive. I have brewed and tested decks like Woe-Eater, Marsh Croc, and Basilica Bell-Haunt, and generally think that mass discard doesn't work well when you have to spend cards in hand repeatedly to do it. Where discard thrives is in decks that do it repeatedly with more cards being discarded by each opponent than you spend cards to do it. For example, Gorex and Barrowin let you keep reusing the same discard creatures while also sacrificing them to other effects for additional value, and Abdel can turn one flicker into multiple discard effects (or discard plus lots of draw, like you said). There's also the grindy discard engines in the CZ, like Siren of the Silent Song and Zoyowa/Perforating Artist/Osseous Sticktwister. Siren is probably the one discard deck that suffers the absolute most from being archenemy and getting gang-beat. But my secondary point is that mass discard has to hit a threshold (~4 cards discarded by turn 6, ~6 by turn 8, etc) to be effective. Brewers considering mass discard need to seriously consider whether they can hit this kind of threshold while still generating some kind of board state to defend themselves.
@lobbert8 re:targeted discard I have been using Augur of Skulls and Brain Weevil in Gorex and they've been great. Originally meant for targeting the person that might have counterspells, but they also do great for going after the person with the engine and reducing the hate from the rest of the table. Will probably put in Mournwhelk, too.
@@lobbert8 The debate over what to call group slug is also interesting and has my mind churning. I guess in my mind, group hug is about choices to opponents with positive outcomes. I give you more cards/resources and therefore more options, or you have the option to get a thing, but it means I also get a thing. Whereas group slug is giving opponents choices, but with negative outcomes (and specifically the negative outcome is more than just paying mana or being blanket disallowed, since that's more traditional white/blue stax effects). The classic example of Zozu says "You have the option to play that land, or not. If you do, it hurts, and if you don't, you're behind on mana." So be that definition, edicts and mass discard are group slug in that opponents choose what to sacrifice or discard. Similarly, Curfew, Fade Away, Crack the Earth, and Pick Your Poison are common group slug cards, and Perforating Artist, Sivriss, and Dusk Mangler are group slug commanders. The stax effects you outline, like Suture Priest, also fall neatly under this definition of group slug (whether or not they are also stax pieces).
