In this season of Over My Dead Body, "Tally", listen to the story of Daniel (Dan) Eric Markel who was Canadian-born attorney and a law professor murdered in Tallahassee, Florida, in 2014, in a murder for hire motivated by Markel's divorce from Wendi Adelson. Adelson has not been charged, but she has been named, together with her brother Charlie and mother Donna as "conspirators" in the killing. So far, four individuals, Luis Rivera, Sigfredo Garcia, Katherine Magbanua, and Charlie Adelson. During the time of investigation, a $25,000 CrimeStoppers reward was initially offered as well as a separate, independently funded $100,000 award was offered in July 2015. The Markel Act (Florida grandparental visitation rights) was a development from this case. The murder of Dan Markel and the trial of Katherine Magbanua is covered in the A&E series Court Cam Presents Under Oath. Ongoing Daniel Markel Murder Trial for Katherine Magbanua (found guilty on all charges) in Katherine Magbanua retrial and Charlie Adelson are happening summer 2022.

This podcast was very revealing. Wendi said Dan would be the best person to be "her" children's father. So was it all about "pedigree"? Dan being so brilliant, handsome etc?
From the podcast, seems like she was ticking off her checklist.
1) First we got divorced.
2) Then he was murdered.
3) Now I have full custody of the boys.
4) Finally! I can move back to civilization.
5) I can now erase him permanently from my life, change my name and the boys names to Adelson. create a distance with Dan's family, brainwash the boys that their Dad didn't exist.

The self proclaimed "Maestro" is taken down by the bump.
Wendi will be hard to get because she is one smart lady. The only way she goes down is if someone else takes her down with them, ie: Charlie, etc. - which probably won’t happen. I would hate to try and live life with what she knows on my conscience.
@@KingCreole8 It’s unfortunate, but she will be the hardest to charge and convict. It’s likely only Charlie and her mother knows she’s behind it. It seems that Charlie was the orchestrator and setup the entire hit. Wendi knew and gave her blessing with a far-removed involvement (TV repair appointment for alibi). The mother knew and provided some aid as well. Charlie used Katie to connect him with her baby’s daddy and his friend(s) to carry out the hit. Charlie was convinced his splitting his family from the lesser “common folk” and criminals he involved physically would secure the plan. Ironically, if they hadn’t followed him all over town and parked at his house, the car possibly wouldn’t have been connected. Wearing a proper disguise and hiding under concealment until you can shoot him would have been way harder for police to solve.
Georgia will get Wendi. Just a matter of time.

Wendi didn’t seem to care not one iota about who killed her ex husband and why. When they did arrest someone, she showed very little interest, even though she claimed she was afraid she might be next. So many holes in a person’s story when they’re lying! IMO, Katie is proclaiming her boyfriend’s innocence, because she knows the Cops are listening!
Wendi, doesn't care who killed husband. She might even know, but we'll never know what she knows.
She( KM) wants the FBI to show courtesy and call them first. Katie should have called Dan first and warned him ⚠️

Katie has a beautiful grasp of the English language. There's a certain ring to all the F bombs used as nouns, adverbs, and adjectives. Maybe a gerund is in store for us.
Folks who speak with F-bombs are more likely to think of themselves as too cool for school and smarter than forensics science. I believe Dona and Wendy will do time. Families that try to alienate the other parent from their kids' lives usually lose all their rights due to their crime ending up behind bars.

Wendy is so self absorbed she can’t even see how obnoxiously obvious it is that she is spewing absolute BS! So morally corrupt she virtually gloats about how resilient she thinks she is… she admits she wasn’t in love with Danny. She tells friends she has cold feet about getting married but SHE CHOOSES to go through it anyway…. And then when the marriage falls apart she blames Danny… when she was never committed in the first place. It won’t be long before she’s arrested and finds her forever home In Tallahassee ⏳it wont be long.
Dan Markel was a great sperm donor. That’s all Wendi wanted.
Well in some of the media she gave hints that Dan paid more attention to her son's than to herself. Sad to say it seemed she was so spoiled her family killed for her.
It's a good thing to have close family ties, but this families ties were a little too twisted.

If my daughter called me and told me her ex was just shot and is going to die and tells me she needs me, i would say "oh no, what happened, did he do, did someone else do, was it a robbery, where did it happen? where are you now? Etc. I would have so many questions. Instead Donna says i will be right there. If course you will Donna cause you already know the story behind it
Exactly! Anyone who is faced with a completely unexpected death, even a heart attack, would go to denial first, not sobs. Donna’s bags were already packed.

You did an amazing job on this story of Dan Markel. Such a senseless tragedy. Does anyone really think Wendi had no place in this crime or didn't know it was going to happen at some point in the future? It's hard for me to believe she knew nothing but I could be wrong. She seems so ungrateful for so many things in life. WHY did no one show up for Charlie's trial? Or did I miss that part?
Other than Wendi having to testify there were no Adelson’s there. No Donna or Harvey. Surprising for a “close” family.
Coconspirators didn’t feel comfortable in a courtroom setting.

She's totally involved. She was the one who knew his schedule and that he was leaving on the 19th so it had to be done by the 18th. She goes way out of her way to drive to the liquor store that morning even though she told cops she was running late for lunch so had no time to shower but she has time to drive out of the way for booze that she could've bought after her lunch date. She drives up Trescott as a shortcut but it's the longest way, and she isn't concerned when she sees crime scene tape and cop cars very near the house her kids were just staying at. And she had to drive near Dan's house to see the tape, she didn't just turn onto Trescott and turn back around like she claims (Katiecoollady has a great vido mapping her route that day). Also Katie Magbanua said "I know" when Sigfredo called to say it was done. How did she know. I think Wendi told her through WhatsApp because Wendi has been asked multiple times on the stand whether she had WhatsApp back then. I think the prosecution know something about this. I mean, there's loads more pointing to her guilt. Watch Carl Steinbeck if you can, he has listed all the things that point to it.
This is an amazing podcast. Excellent work. Hoping for justice for the Markels and that it’s not too late for them to be able to get to see the boys & tell them how much their father loved them. It cost him his life.

Another no brainer. Katie wanted desperately to get the lifestyle from Charlie...rich, expensive cars ECT. But Charlie squandered it all away with his criminal activity. It doesn't get worse than murder. What a fool Charlie is. Sounds like the only sane Adelson is the oldest son that moved 1500 miles away from the toxic family.

Listening to these calls, I had a thought, I bet none of the actors in this horrible scheme to kill DM gave one thought about ever being caught and how that would negatively affect the the Adelson namesake, including all their extended friends and family and their own reputations.

Not really they could have gotten away with it if they simply did the following.
1.Used a highly popular car that millions of Americans use. Honda Civic, Camry, or Accord in white or black with no distinctive errors, or damages, rims etc.
2. Wore CIA like disguising. Easy. Changing clothes, hats, sunglasses, wigs at several spots.
3. Stole a few license plates
Outside of those 3 things they figuratively could have gotten away with this easily. Easy stupid things your hamster surely wouldn't think of.

Listening to Rivera (and the other people who Katie talked to) really shines a light on how bad the undercover “bump” guy was at trying to appear like he ran in the same circles. Katie would have known immediately so it’s wonderful how it started with Donna since she’d have no idea what to look for. Lol. He wasn’t even slightly close.
It's easy to say that with hindsight, but in real life when it happens there is so much doubt and confusion because you don't know for sure. Your mind plays tricks on you, and one moment you can be certain, then the next you think, "No, they would arrest us already", or "Are the police allowed to do that" etc. Remember, it is a difficult situation, because the stakes are high, if the bump is genuine then they don't wana upset him, but if he is undercover, then they don't wana say anything wrong. It is hard for the mind to entertain two posibilites at once, and that adds extra pressure. Put simply, however they view the bump, it is still stressful, and the stress makes them slip up.
So I’m curious if you think Katie would have reacted that way? And the reason I ask is because she grew up in that world. I do see what you’re saying and I agree with you to a certain point. And that’s if Katie was the initial choice for the undercover. I believe 100% that she would have been scared but I believe that she would have known immediately that it was law enforcement and we already know that Sigfredo knew not to speak openly on the phone. When you grow up surrounded by the criminal element, you learn some things. She obviously didn’t take the whole phone part seriously but she would have confided in Sigfredo from the start I believe.
@Finneganbeginagain1 I agree with you that people have intuitions from their experience, and so she probably would have a gut feeling that it wasn't quite right. It's just that fear and other things like rationalisation would have weakened it. Intuition can be really acute because it is based on experience but unfortunately, if law enforcement is after you to the degree that they are getting permission to do bumps on you, then psychologically it is very hard to maintain 24/7 composure, and especially so when you consider there were so many people all involved and under the same stress. They would have to method act, but it was hard for them to do so because they didnt know if playing innocent would let a hitman associate want revenge for them not paying up. Doubt can be an incredibly powerful weapon.

Yeah I agree. They paint Wendi in an artificially good light. I think they were trying to get Wendi to contribute to the series and don’t want to burn the bridge… but didn’t realize Wendi helps NO ONE but Wendi.
Wendi has spoken the least about the M. I don’t think the Podcast has painted Wendi as a grieving Ex, the DA has not released all the audios to the public. They are smart to keep things close to their vest, until her arrest.

schedule. They were always going to go back for the hit.
Rivera stated that if the opportunity arose during the first trip, they would have killed him.

@@jenniferthompson6280 Yes, she would have, because the "joke" was already known and out there. She knew, and she intentionally did things and said things after-the-fact to make people say, "She wouldn't do that if she were guilty." They planned the murder AND what to do afterwards.
She was looking after herself and her kids first under questioning. I think she panicked and to throw law enforcement off her trail, she had all the motive, she threw family under the bus. It's as simple as that.
Wendi has a good understanding of the law and knows, that without intimate knowledge, tying Wendi to the murder would be difficult for law enforcement to establish.
I would never marry someone that can't eat a cheese burger, you have to find a Rabi to bless your meat? That means a Rabi has to go to most of your dinners, omg , can't visit a grave, belittling others including me. Or acts so arrogant because thier a Havard graduate.
