Very emotional song. I am from Lancashire, and we have lots of artwork memorials dedicated to Lancashire regiments. Also, my great-grandfather was with the Manchester regiment, which was one of the first regiments to make the push that day. They were simply cut to pieces by German artillery fire. I have seven years of service with the Royal Tank Regiment. Our regiment originally created the first main battle tank, Big Willie, which made an appearance in quite a few of the large campaigns during WW1.

Sabaton are a fantastic band. They write songs based around notable historical figures, battles and events from all throughout history. The main thing is they do not glorify war or any side as they write songs about Germans too for example, but they highlight the bravery of the people who fought and their sacrifice while at the same time showing the futility and pointlessness of bloodshed. They are one of the best Metal bands in the world and deservedly so.

True, but you generally do know what you're signing up for and make an informed decision, you're trained appropriately as well.
These kids had no idea what they signed up for, were barely trained at all and the draftsmen didn't really care if they faked their ages either because all they needed was cannon fodder. Which is what they were and how they died. An utterly pointless, tragic massacre. They deserve to be remembered as all soldiers do, but I feel like they deserve it especially because they should never have been there.

@@ChadtheHammer Are you seriously trying to frame kids today who don't go get killed in a war with 12 years as some kinda cowards? Kids back then mostly went to war that early because they were exposed to propaganda nonstop, at home, at school,on the radio, in the cinemas, it didn't matter where you went, there were people there telling you how badass and cool it was to be a soldier and how glorious it was and what a hero you are when you come back and how all the girls will want to be with you and all the guys will want to be you. They didn't say a word about getting your arm blown off by grenades and the majority of people never coming home. The two guys standing in the door opening at 7:51 are Mikkey Dee and Phil Campbell, the drummer and the guitarist of Motörhead. The young men were volunteers, who were enlist from the communities, who either worked in hard industry, mills and the likes. Given the then Kings shilling when the enlisted. 3 meals a day a bed and uniform. Given very basic training. To them it was a better life than some of them had.

Sabaton have been called "a bunch of history teachers that decided to form a metal band so they could reach a wider audience". This is probably one of the slowest pieces they've released. Compare it with "En Livstid I Krig", "The Lion From the North", or "The Night Witches". They don't take sides; they just lay out the facts in musical form. As the closing slate for their music video "Bismarck" says, "War knows no nation."
You may also be interested in the Sabaton History Channel, which explains in greater detail the topics for their music, and why they choose to release some videos as animated stories, e.g. "No Bullets Fly".

Theres a knight and look a napoleonic era drummer!" And you can tell where they are from and what time period by there uniforms but you don't know who the men are who are wearing them and as the walk forward into the mist there names are forgoten and all we remember is there uniforms. They laid down there lives for what they believed to be the greatest cause and we dont even have a small idea who these individual men were and what there names where. Almost all solders who die sacrificed everything and are quickly forgoten.

It probably had had about 1000 people in it for the last 300 years. I stood in front of a memorial that listed the local dead in the Great War. There were almost 200 names on it.

Now you have to react to Christmas Truce by Sabaton. It´s about the truce between the germans and the brittish troops on Christmas 1914. A true story. The OFFICIAL music video. Not the animated version. Bring tissues. Hehehehehe
Oh and the drummer is married to Floor Jansen (Nightwish)

On paper the idea of being able to fight with your friends, or just someone you know in general, instead of going to war all on your own, seems pretty good. They were able to go through at home. basically. They slept in their own beds, got up in the morning, went to their local army base and trained there with their friends. But then of course things like this happen.
The British shelled the German positions for weeks, hoping the intense shelling would destroy most fortifications, like bunkers, trenches and especially barbed wire on the frontline (it didn't). The men were ordered to slowly advance towards the "obliterated German positions", because they thought all they had to do was take out some last remaining soldiers. What ended up happening is, the British soldiers got out of their trenches, walked less than 10 meters and were ripped to shreds by German machine guns. It was planned that the first British wave would hit the German frontline after 10-20 minutes, it took them hours, just to get to the first trench line.

Every WW1 or WW2 song is emotional for me because my great-grandfather fought in both wars and died in the 2nd world war. Myself i´am retired soldier, served for 5 years for my country and i really like Sabaton and their production .Basically they are teaching history by singing and history should never be forgotten, changed or repeated again, humanity needs to learn from history to not do same mistakes again, but still there is tension in the world because of egos of certain leaders. We fight over the smallest things and ignore the major problems like famine or deadly diseases.
Remember, anyone who reads this comment, we might be different in skin colour but our anatomy is the same, when we die our bodies disentegrate the same way, when they find us in the future our bones are the same. Try to make the world a better and happier place to live or else our children and their children will live in even harder times as we do now...

I remember watching the music video few days ago, and my hearth just sank trough the song and the learning of the very story bout it.
Sabaton did a well cover of the song, that war is truly a terrible thing that inflict so much pain and i could not stop thinking about all those mothers that lost their children and husbands by those wars.
Sabaton surely been one of my favorite Bands, cause not only do they do great music and covers but also make you learn about history, especially bout war.

Christmas Truce, Soldier of Heaven, and The Last Stand are three more excellent Sabaton songs ( Dan Vasc and Jonathan Young also both do excellent covers of The Last Stand.). Also, check out Tommy Johansson's solo work and his work with Majestica; he's the one who did the guitar solo. This past December, he did his own "24 Days of Christmas" by releasing a video daily, and he releases a solo video almost every Friday.

I love Sabaton's music. Being a history nut and a retired soldier, I've lost friends all over the world. This makes this song relatable even today. I don't blame you for some tears. It makes me tear up as well. Interesting to note that the intelligence and physical requirements for British soldiers was higher for the infantry than most other jobs. They were not cannon fodder but the cream of male society where they came from. Listen to Soldier of The Sky.

Sabaton has done themed albums since their 4th album. They're up to their 10th now. The 4th album, called "The Art of War" all had songs that encapsulated some tenet of Sun Tzu's art for war. The next album "Coat of Arms" had a mix of songs about WWI, and WWII. The next album, "Carolus Rex" was about Swedish 17th Century history. The next two, "Heroes" and "The Last Stand" were both about WWII specifically. And then their most recent two, "The Great War" and "The War to End All Wars" were about WWI. I hope they do an album about the Russo-Ukraine War one of these days.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Sabaton! Even though this particular song is a cover, these guys are amazing storytellers in just about everything they do. As I'm sure many others have told you, they tell stories of war history, but never take sides or glorify war itself. And they honour the people "on the ground", while so much history tends to focus on the leaders and the politics.
If you want something very emotional but also uplifting I'd recommend the animated video for No Bullets Fly. Other songs I love are Christmas Truce (tissue warnings but also a beautiful story), The Unkillable Soldier (upbeat and fun in an almost Pythonesque way), Soldier of Heaven, The Last Stand and The Red Baron (just great songs with great storytelling imo), Bismark (epic music video), Lady of the Dark and The Night Witches (cool female-centric stories), and Livgardet/The Royal Guard (basically an anthem to the Swedish royal guard regiment). Oh, and the live performance of En Livstid i Krig ("A Lifetime of War", sung in Swedish but with English subtitles) from Gothenburg is absolutely epic, but also comes with a tissue warning.
I wish you lots of fun diving into their catalogue. =)
Also, there aren't many frames in this video where you only see the band memebers and all of them are in the same shot, but at 3:48 and 5:51 in your video they are lined up like this, from left to right:
    Chris Rörland (guitarist)
    Hannes Van Dahl (drummer)
Joakim Brodén (lead singer and keyboardist, although the latter is almost never shown)
    Tommy Johansson (guitarist)
    Pär Sundström (bassist)

John and Edward sadly fell in Gallipoli in 1915 and have no known grave. James also fought in Gallipoli but then went to fight on the western front a couple of battle to be named the battle of the Somme and also the third battle of Ypres AKA Passchendale. Sabaton consists of singer Joakim Broden (the guy with sunglasses and mohawk), bassist Per Sundström (the guy with the graying beard) Drummer Hannes Van Dahl (mustache and long blonde hair), Guitarist Chris Rörland (small beard and long dark hair) and guitarist Tommy Johansen (slightly chubby babyface) Tomm is also a great singer and has his own band called Majestica, as well as a youtube channel where he makes covers and disneyfies Sabaton songs, he just released an album with 80'er covers.
Joakim writes the lyrics and most of the melodies often i cooperation with Per, and sometimes Chris or Tommy helps with the music.
My personal favorites from Sabaton are Night Witches, Lady of the Dark (watch the animated story video for those 2), To Hell and Back (official musicvideo) and En Livstid i krig (watch live in Gothenburg remember subtitles as it is in swedish)

The incredulity and anger when you said 6 miles is possibly the best raw response possible.
The British army phases of their army during the war. The first was the British expeditionary force made up of veteran professional soldiers, who pound for pound were far more skilled at their craft than any others in the world at that time. However they were a much smaller force than those of continental Europe. As the losses mounted to staggeringly high levels, a volunteer force was needed to rapidly. Expand the army and to replace the losses of those seasoned troops.
These were the pals. The northern lads. Volunteer units that were raised entirely within towns and villages on the promised that they would be able to serve together.. The idea being vetted, you might fight harder if you knew the people you were fighting with. This was where the youth of britain went to die.
Following that catastrophe specifically at the Somme and Ypres, Conscription entered as the third phase. There could not have been a fourth.
