  • Today I'm building a super cheap laser enclosure from plywood and acrylic. This will enclose the new Ortur Laser Master 3 that I recently acquired! You must have an enclosure for these diode lasers (I thought I could get away with it for a few months but quickly learnt that's not the case!) So best to price this into your budget when you buy the machine. Thankfully you can build a very effective enclosure for as little as $40 in materials (not including exhaust fan, but even these can be had for cheap).

    Good video! Your intuition about the vent holes is correct. The textbook term for it is Conservation of Mass. To maintain the same velocity on the way in, you want vent holes that equal the size of the exhaust. Smaller holes will result in higher velocity and vice versa.

      Thanks for the info and clearing that up. Time to read up on conservation of mass 👍

    Hello, don't know if you see new comments on older videos but thought I would ask if you have the STL file found for the 4 inch duct flanges. I found some online but yours look like its very good and saves a lot of filament unlike others I've seen. great video.

    Hello Mate, thank you very much for that great tutorial. However, i was wondering if there was any way to coat the interior with something fireproof as sometimes (rarely), lasers could start flames and a wooden enclosure would only make it worse.

      You could line the inside with fire resistant plasterboard. To slow down the spread of fire.
      There are also fire extinguisher add-ons from Xtool that you can add to any enclosure which seems to be a great alternative

    can i use orange transparent acrylic glass for the window? i dont think we have that laser shield sheet here locally.

      i wouldnt trust anything that isnt laser safety certified so just get the closest you can (mine is just regular ol' acrylic, best bet it to just get some good CERTIFIED laser safety glasses and treat the enclosure and a secondary safety layer

    Do you know if there a smart way to stop the laser when we open the box? It's to avoid It would be to avoid blinding people in the event of a problem.

      Yes you could install a cut off switch on the lid if needed

    At 8:14 what is that fan thing you use? Did you buy it? Repurpose?
    I'm asking because I am currently useing an pre-owned kitchen fume hood extractor thing, and this looks a bit smaller

      Hi Nik, im actually testing 2 fans at the moment for this enclosure, the one in the video is this - www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01N3C7R4E just a cheap 4inch inline fan (approx 110CFM) and then I'm testing the AC Infinity T6 (6 inch, 400CFM). The 4inch does the job, and is very quiet, but this ac inifinty is much more powerful and I got it 2nd hand for not that much more than the 4inch so Ill probably keep the ac infinity

    Hey bro I don't have a 3d printer any suggestion for printing exhaust pipes?

    • @ThisDesignedThat
      @ThisDesignedThat  6 місяців тому

      you could slice my design and try laser cutting 3-6mm plywood and stack them together to create the exhaust ports

    Considering a build like this myself. Got a small question though. Does all the smell get vented out well? Like if the laser hasn't run for a while, does the enclosure build up smell which then "blasts" you in the face if you open it up?
    I currently have a more expensive branded enclosure but not quite liking it as the smell is still bad. It vents out fine out of the window. But when not using my laser for two weeks and opening it up, a huge "cloud" of smell "punches" me in the base. It's like it still builds up inside the enclosure somehow.

    • @ThisDesignedThat
      @ThisDesignedThat  5 місяців тому

      The smell mostly builds up on the cutting bed below the material, that will stink from just 1 cutting project. It's a smelly process I don't think you can get around that to be honest. If I take out my cutting bed and just smell the enclosure itself it's not too smelly.

    I think you wouldn't need those holes when you always use air-assist.

    • @ThisDesignedThat

      Yes, proper OD safety glass is hugely expensive, but worth the cost if it protects your eyesight, that's priceless

      Yes you are probably right, its not air tight so you would get airflow through the enclosure even without the holes
