I have always liked the locks on the dials and shutter surround button, ever since the Nikon F5 film camera and continued through all pro-orientated digital cameras. There's nothing worse than a dial accidentally nudged to another setting.
ha, i remember when you made the switch to nikon you were 100% the same, going this little thing is sooo little but so annoying and this is little and annoying
You really see the green tint in the Sony when it's right next to the Nikon footage. That was some of the best looking wildlife shots you've gotten, overtaking the Panasonic g9.2. Nikon has that native Voigtlander lens selection as well, and they have legacy Zeiss F mount lenses.

WOW congratulations the man has finally found the (near) Perfect camera/lens combo, the footage looks amazing, keep the videos coming my friend I love watching them ❤

The flat Earth dome opened up and the Nikon gods blessed Kasey with a near perfect camera and lens combo! If he just use the monopod, he might free that hand to use the dial. The cinema was ours! Thanks for sharing! Wonderful images!
(1) The Nikon HD240p is better than Sony's...Sony is less than full HD and it shows. (2) The animal eye-detect in the Z6III isn't *quite* up to the dedicated bird detect mode of the Z8/Z9, unfortunately. (3) The waveform monitor is an option for video, but not stills...it's buried in the video settings. (4) If you shoot AF-C with AF-ON set to ONLY, you don't need to switch MF/AF -- when you want to AF just press the AF-On, and release it to stop AF and revert to MF. That stops the AF from hunting and lets you revert to MF immediately whenever required. Don't use AF-F unless you don't mind risking the AF hunting...which it absolutely will do if you give it a chance. Same goes with Sony and Canon, trust me.
You could use AF-F but set af to not try to refocus when subject isn’t detected. Creates very consistent focus. Forget what setting it is, not good for all scenarios obviously.
The big issue for most people in the amateur scene is the price. And, when you add the price of glass it's really not a choice. Fantastic footage today!! Have a rockin' day!
I keep re-viewing this video. Such beautiful footage of these creatures. You've really honed your skills in this area over the past couple of years. Amazing work, even though it's still not the "Perfect Camera", but sure is close.
The process of creating their own glass from scratch sets Nikon apart from most other companies, giving them a significant advantage in producing professional grade optics. This level of control allows them to fine tune their lenses to a much higher level, particularly for focal lengths beyond 400 millimeters and below 20mm.
@@marcotropic They make the PF glass which is way smaller an lighter than anything else, sure it has downsides but lens designs are always about compromises.
@@marcotropic because it clearly hasn't really been a priority for them, until their latest 35 1.4, at least. For now, Nikon seems to be far more intrested in achieving the best optical quality for a given target weight and well.... it shows. Unlike Canon, who seem to have (initially at least) decided to go for as much compactness and lightness without compromising optics too much.
@@marcotropic I appreciate your reply. Your question piques my interest since it leads to a lot of speculation. Nikon has continuously proven its competence in creating small lenses, despite the constraints of the older Nikon F mount. Despite the release of the smaller and faster Nikon NIKKOR Z 35mm F/1.4 Lens, Nikon's choice not to develop further lenses of this kind has perplexed many people. This lens is much smaller than the 1.8 prime lenses, and primes beyond 300mm are extremely lightweight, adding to the confusion. The release of the Nikon Z 35mm F/1.4 Lens demonstrates Nikon's ability to develop small lenses for its Z series, perplexing those who are unfamiliar with Nikon. Furthermore, it appears that the larger lenses' purpose is to facilitate future updates and compatibility with new items or technologies. This would also allow for more sophisticated functions, such as enhanced focusing and image stabilization. The lens construction incorporates larger and more potent motors and electrical components. In addition, optical experts and nerds believe that the Nikon Z mount "S" pro lenses may also be intended for crop sensor medium format cameras. The resemblance in size between the Nikon Z mount and the medium-format 645 mount has sparked speculation that Nikon may have concealed intentions to produce a camera that extends beyond 35mm. Finally, I understand and share your preference for smaller lenses. However, the need for video has forced each company to increase the size of its optics, resulting in a change in the dynamics of photography, with both benefits and drawbacks since everything in the world of photography is a give and take.👍
Im my experience normal is better for video. The jitter you’re talking about that goes away with sport mode is when a picture is captured and the stab recenters. Sport is good for panning.
@@livejames9374 No he's talking about panning jitter in video, I've found Sports to be better for video when panning and moving around as well. I go back to normal for steady shots (video). I typically leave it in normal for photo mode too even though you see it recentering after taking shots.
After watching that stupid unboxing video, I've been impatiently awaiting this video. It was worth the wait. One particular part stood out to me. You had the sparrow dead center and I was thinking, "What are you doing?! Give it room to fly into space!". When it took off, instead of flying to the left, as I expected, it contorted its body and flew to the right. Shows what I know. Lol

Nice review and footage Kasey! It would be nice if they did add mode change functionality to the rear thumb wheel - for example, pressing one of the front buttons on the grip and turning the rear wheel changes mode, and when the front button is released, it reverts to whatever the normal function would be usually shutter speed. They could probably implement that with a firmware update. It would be cool to do that without having to take your eye from the viewfinder, especially with a 600mm beast lens. Happy for you man. Nikon is a hard system to walk away from. I had to bite my lip allot with my Z6 when everyone including you made fun of it and Nikon. It was the underdog that got me to a professional level with wildlife nearly overnight. As for custom banks, I genuinely dug deep trying to find it for you. Most are posting videos for photo menu dives thus far unfortunately. Message from my friend I mentioned stated.. "Create a custom bank A, B, etc.. and assign one to 6K and the other to 1080p". I am sure this doesn't help you at the moment, but I wouldn't give up on it being in there. I was still finding useful settings I didn't know existed 3 years into using my Z6. BTW, not sure on that lens, but allot of Nikkor lenses have an AF/MF switch on the left side near the VR switch. Seeing as you have memory buttons at the front of your lens, I am pretty sure you have the works on that lens. Memory is also very useful to avoid af overiding your manual settings. Also look into af range limit or whatever Nikon calls it. Can be very useful if you're filming something at distance with objects closer to you that could potentially trip up the AF.
That lens is incredible, especially considering the size and weight. I watched this full screen on my 4K monitor, and the sharpness is unreal. I know they got the size down by making it f6.3 instead of f4, but that's probably plenty of light given how good sensors are these days.
Hey Casey I love your videos! I am just wondering how you find the dynamic range on the camera? Is it as good as other cameras at its price point? Thanks.
Hey Casey! I found the Z8 was also very noisy but I later learned that the view assist on Nikon cameras suck. I've had really great success by turning off the view assist, setting my high zebras to 245, and raising my exposure just below clipping the whites. Using these setting the 12bit Nraw on both normal and HQ has amazing dynamic range in the shadows and almost no noise! If this works for you please PUT THE VIEW ASSIST ON BLAST, I HATE IT!!! IT'S HORRIBLE!!!
a6700 has 1.58x crop in 4k120 and is half the price of z6iii. It is apsc, and if you pair it with sony 70-350 you get 4k120 at max 830mm for maybe 1/3 of price of this setup and waaay smaller and lighter too. Slightly worse quality, but still pretty decent. I think that would be the ideal setup for amateur wildlife videographer.
Yeah at 1080p240 is is obviously skipping lines. I think a7s3 will win there. I have seen pretty decent footage of 40mpx fujis at 240fps though, I wonder, maybe they are skipping the same amount of lines as 26mpx sensors, but since higher resolution they are able to retain more details?? Side comparison would be something I would love to see.
Hey @ 8:35 you sure? I have one in hand and I got waveform you can have it either big in the center or small lower right corner of the display.. unless you were referring to something else
I don't really mind the placement of the pasm dial on my z63 (but I might if I had a huge lens like the 600mm) but what I find incredibly annoying is that it's always locked. Like that's so beyond stupid. Like Fuji does, let ME decide if I want it locked or not! But dude, that footage! Unreal! Makes me wanna sell a kidney to get that lens!
@@ridwanatmawijaya108 Absolute nonsense argument! I leave the dials on my Fuji unlocked all the time and I have never accidentally moved them. In the rare cases you move the dials accidentally, it will happen in the camera bag or when you're fumbling around with the camera. It would never happen while shooting, besides, you would always see the mode you're in on the screen or evf so you can be "100% confident" on what mode you're in.
@@xchumpremember this : not everyone has the same age, not everyone has equal brain memory, not everyone use camera same like others, and not everyone treat their camera equally careful. Once my PSAM changed accidentally because i use 2 camera on double quick release strap.
@@ridwanatmawijaya108 Yes I agree, we're all different, which is why it would make most sense to let people choose if they lock it or not! You say we're all different yet you want to force those who don't want the lock to have it always locked to cater to the ones who "forget to lock it". Double standards dude...
Adjusting the dial left handed looks like a tonne of leverage on the camera mount. I wouldn't want to do that with a lens that size. There's a reason you get collars on the big lenses. Not only do they weigh more than even a big heavy camera body but they stick out a foot or so and the actual force it exudes is orders of magnitude more than its actual weight.
Now the conspiracy is not about cameras. We're not talking about cameras, we're talking about making great art! That 6k 60p looks fantastic. It's all I would use.
Did you try Sports mode for panning? I typically use that now on my Z6 I for moving around with wider lenses (and panning in tele), I may go back to Normal for if I'm @ 400mm and doing steady shots with he Z70-200/2.8 + 2.0x TC.

I'm pretty sure the custom memory banks are only on their pro level cameras. I know my D500 has them, but not the dial. Same for the Z8 and Z9.
Z8 has custom banks, I button + command Diego click and you change resolution
Banks are for pro tier user settings are for enthusiast tier so will have to choose between U1, U2, U3 for anything under a Z8.
Smart man Casey got a whole new audience speak good things about Nikon and they will be loyal to you. 😅
damn... that's really nice content, it was very nice to watch, thanks!
Pretty compelling proof that birds can indeed fly.
That "shutter sound" when you go in/out of menus isn't the shutter, it's the IBIS mechanism enagaging/disengaging.
It probably strengthens the mechanism over time rather than weakens it right?........right?
Thank you for your footage and review. Have you find lots of noise in the shadows? Many others have had issues
Soo does that 600pf have the 3D pop??
That lens is incredible, especially considering the size and weight. I watched this full screen on my 4K monitor, and the sharpness is unreal. I know they got the size down by making it f6.3 instead of f4, but that's probably plenty of light given how good sensors are these days.
Hey Casey I love your videos! I am just wondering how you find the dynamic range on the camera? Is it as good as other cameras at its price point? Thanks.
You are finding so mand bugs in cameras and lenses. You might as well start macro photography 😁
That's one sick setup, but probably not meant for mere mortals
The deer is like... What the funk? Is that the new Nikon Z6III?
Waveforms are there and so is the ability to AF on the fly during video. Waveforms are part of the histogram settings.
a6700 has 1.58x crop in 4k120 and is half the price of z6iii.
Lock is there for 100% confident on selected mode, because lot of people will forgot to lock/unlock and move the dial accidentally.
@@xchump its called minimizing human error. Its not cater for some people , Like it or not, double standard or not, doesn't matter.
5:17 great Toneh
That deer footage is pretty amazing!
Did you try Sports mode for panning? I typically use that now on my Z6 I for moving around with wider lenses (and panning in tele), I may go back to Normal for if I'm @ 400mm and doing steady shots with he Z70-200/2.8 + 2.0x TC.
pristine quality in RAW
This is nuts. Wow.
Fixing the Red Skin is Standard Profile. All three Sharpness settings to 0.00, Noise Reduction Off and you got perfect skin tones imo.
It amazes me that in 2024 camera manufacturers can do all that they do except implement features camera buyers actually want
