Blower Fan Problem - Not Working On Speeds 1,2,3 (Seat Leon 1m / Toledo 2)

  • Is your blower fan working only on the 4th speed?
    This is a common problem for this generation of Volkswagen-Audi-Group cars.
    You need a new resistor block, or just the thermal fuse.
    For this car you need a 192°C, 250V, 10A thermal fuse.
    Resistor block serial number: 1j0819022a
    If you have the same problem on your Vw Golf 4 / Bora / Skoda Octavia 1, the repairing method is similar. You need to dismantle the dashboard to reach the blower fan and fan resistor.

    i dont know what i would do without you sorin
    thank you so much for the detailed guide!!
    ressistor serial number 1j0819022a

      hi. thanks for the info. I've seen this problem before. the pins of the resistor block rust due to the air humidity, or water gets in the fan compartment. the corrosion creates an imperfect connection between the pins and the wires connector. this imperfect connection becomes a resistor to the whole circuit and gets very hot because there is a lot of amps going through these wires, then the wires get hot too. this is very dangerous, because the wires insulation melts and the wires can melt other plastics too.

What do I need to do in order to make the blowing fan work again? Is it a commun known problem like this?

    Multumesc mult pentru video, mi-a fost de mare ajutor! Am schimbat rezistenta la un Toledo din 2006... a fost aproximativ la fel... am curatat si aeroterma!!! Super!!!
    Acum dupa aprox. 2 luni de la ”reparatie” nu mai vrea sa mai mearga pe tr. 1 si 2... am inlocuit inca odata rezistenta (crezand ca s-a ars iar) si nimic... ai vre-o idee?
    Multumesc anticipat!

    • @Sorin_DIY_Mechanical_Nerd
      @Sorin_DIY_Mechanical_Nerd  6 років тому

      salut. blocul de rezistente are 4 pini. 3 pini sunt pentru treptele 1, 2 si 3 ale ventilatorului. ori nu mai fac contact cei 2 pini, poate au oxidat. ori s-a ars una din rezistente. ar trebui sa verifici cu un aparat de masura pinii blocului de rezistente. unul din pinii din capat (nu mai stiu daca stanga sau dreapta) trebuie sa indice o rezistenta cu ceilalti 3 pini. daca nu indica o rezistenta cu cel putin unul din ceilalti 3 pini (probabil al 3lea) inseamna ca e arsa una din rezistente. si nu ma refer la siguranta termica din capat. ma refer la rezistente facute din bobine si acoperite cu acel material ceramic verde. daca rezistentele si pinii sunt ok, inseamna ca se blocheaza ventilatorul la turatii mici. vezi daca se invarte usor cu mana.

    Just seen this video. Ok on changing the fan - BUT - dipping the component in water to cool and then using a mains powered non-polarised non-earthed soldering iron is a sure fire way to get electrocuted! Use a proper clip on heat sink and low melt point solder and a proper electrical soldering iron instead! Looping the component wires will have little effect on protecting the component temperature-wise on soldering - unless you loop about three times and use a heat sink clip! If you solder properly the melt and solder apply and set should be completed in less than 1 second and that will not damage the components.

    Hello Sorin, i Have 2002 Seat Leon. My blower works fine, i have clima, but in 20-30 kilometers my fuse just blows (in the fuse box) where could be the problem ?

    • @Sorin_DIY_Mechanical_Nerd
      @Sorin_DIY_Mechanical_Nerd  7 років тому

      hi. probably the climate control uses more Amps than it should. It could be a short circuit in the system. Only at a service they can check that. Try to manually set the blower fan at different speeds, see if that changes anything... and check if you have the right fuse, I've found that the fuse should be of 7.5 A.

      that means you have a problem with the blower fan motor. take it out and spin it, probably it will spin very little and it's jamming at lower speeds. clean the motor bearings with an electrical contact cleaner spray. then use some WD40 or other lubricant on the bearings. it should spin much easier. if the blower fan motor is spinning slower than it should, or it's jamming at lower speeds, the motor current consumption is increasing, the fuse will get hotter and will blow again. after cleaning the blower fan and replacing the thermal fuse, avoid using the first fan speed. these are the main reasons the fuse burns.

    • @rali95
      @rali95 6 років тому

      Sorin - DIY Mechanical Nerd I haven't tried this yet, but it looks like amazing advice. Very logical when you think of it.
      Thank you so much. I'll like and support your videos as much as I can.

    • @johnmurrell3175
      @johnmurrell3175 3 роки тому

      The motor bearings are sealed so it is very difficult to re-lubricate them. Also WD40 is not a lubricant it is a rust preventative. My suspicion looking at the motor I have just replaced due to it blowing the 40 Amp fuse on high speed is that the strength of the permanent magnets weakens with age and this results in a higher motor current and therefore results in the fuse blowing or possibly the motor resistor overheating. Note the airflow from the fan cools the heater resistor so if the airflow reduces either due to reduced efficiency of the motor or blockage of the filter or elsewhere the resistor will overheat and probably blow the thermal fuse.

    hi, i have a seat toledo. the fan was making funny noises, then stopped working,then started again, now its stopped again. doesn't work on any setting! would this be the fan motor or that little fuse thing you soldered on? great video by the way, i thought changing a fan motor meant stripping down whole dashboard! this will save me a few euro's!

    • @Sorin_DIY_Mechanical_Nerd
      @Sorin_DIY_Mechanical_Nerd  6 років тому

      hi. if the fan works only at the 4th speed, that means the thermal fuse is burned. if it does't even work on the 4th speed, you have another problem. the fan motor may be damaged, or there is a connection problem on the wires, connectors or even on the resistor block. you can remove the motor and try it with 2 wires connected from the battery. this way you will know if you have a fan motor problem or a connection problem.

    • @johnmurrell3175
      @johnmurrell3175 3 роки тому

      @@Sorin_DIY_Mechanical_Nerd It needs to be greater than 10A as the fan takes 22 Amps on the fast setting according to the fan data sheet so it needs to be 25 Amp or greater. ( This assumes that the fan is in circuit in the high speed position, I don't have the circuit diagram to check) If not it needs a current rating to cope with the current on speed 3 which is probably > 10A. You could check by putting an ampmeter in circuit in place of the circuit fuse but that will need the thermal fuse replaced to test it.

    Salut .. Am avut si eu exact aceeasi problema la un SEAT CORDOBA 2003 .. Am fost la un "electrician" si a facut ceva de genul dar nush ce sa zic exact .. ideea e ca nu merge pe treapta 1 doar pe 2 - 3 -4 cred ca a pus un fir acolo inloc de rezistenta.. Ce rezistenta trebuie sa cumpar acolo si unde as gasi asa ceva ? Respect

    • @Sorin_DIY_Mechanical_Nerd
      @Sorin_DIY_Mechanical_Nerd  7 років тому +1

      Salut. Inseamna ca a montat acel fir in loc de siguranta, apoi a deconectat treapta 1. pe treapta 1 se incinge cel mai mult blocul de rezistente, scopul acelei sigurante termice este sa se arda, daca se incinge la un nivel periculos (ex: daca se blocheaza motorul aerotermei). indiferent daca ai "fir" sau siguranta termica, este indicat sa NU folosesti treapta 1. Deci faptul ca a dezactivat treapta 1 nu e o problema :) . siguranta termica este de 192 (grade C) 10 Amperi. costa aprox 5 lei la magazine de electronice (adelaida, quintrix). Este indicat sa montezi siguranta...

    Salut! te rog frumos daca poti sa ajuti cu un sfat. Am o Skoda Octavia 1U2( este aceiasi lucru la Seat) si aeroterma merge cu turație redusa pe toate treptele selectorului si din cauza asta AC-ul nu mai funcționează..Daca este devina tranzistorul asta pe care l-ai schimbat tu de unde pot sa imi dau seama? si ce specificatii are? ca sa-l pot cumpăra.. Mulțumesc frumos! :)

      salut. eu am schimbat siguranta termica de la blocul de rezistente al ventilatorului. daca e arsa siguranta termica, treptele 1, 2 si 3 nu functioneaza deloc. treapta 4 e conectata direct la comutator (fara rezistente sau siguranta termica) si alimenteaza ventilatorul cu tensiune maxima.
      la tine e alta problema. daca se invarte greu ventilatorul pe toate treptele (inclusiv pe treapta 4), dar e totusi o diferenta de turatie intre trepte, e posibil sa fie ventilatorul de vina. trebuie sa il scoti si sa verifici daca se invarte greu. poate e de ajuns sa il cureti si sa il ungi.
      daca se invarte cu aceeasi turatie pe toate treptele, inseamna ca are o problema de alimentare. trebuie sa ajungi la mufa sau firele comutatorului, sa verifici daca e vreun fir sau contact intrerupt. ai nevoie de un multimetru...

    Great video 👍 looks like a poorly designed assembly! A car you can not use a fan on setting 1??? Crazy..... add the rear light than taking on water like a small bath...these VAG cars should be sold as enthusiasts only ! As they need loads and loads of repairs!!!!

    Why do auto makers still use such inefficient and ancient technology to control the fan speed?
    That's so odd...

      hi. Seat Leon 1m (2000 - 2006) uses technology borrowed from Vw Golf 4 (1997 - 2003). Golf 4 was designed in 1995 - 1996. so this technology is more than 20 years old. at the time, it was a good design, that they could use in these cars. but after 20 years, the weak points come to the surface...

      It's a cheap way of doing it - permanent magnet motors are a lot cheaper than ones with wound field coils. The fan motors used in a lot of Rootes Group & BMC cars in the 1950/60's had wound field coils and controlled the fan speed by varying the field current. Much lower currents resulted in less power dissipated in the resistor. Some even used a variable wire wound resistor to give continuously variable speed. The problem with permanent magnet motors is that the magnetic intensity of the permanent magnets decays with time. This results in the current demand (and the motor speed) increasing. Once the magnets have decayed to about 70% of the original strength the current will exceed the 40 Amp fuse rating on the high speed position and the supply fuse will blow. I have not done the speeds where the resistor is in series but suspect the current also increases resulting in the resistor overheating and the thermal fuse blowing. The situation is worse if you have a high resistance in the airflow duct as the airflow is used to cool the resistors.

      @@VitorMadeira I had to did my text books out from the 1970's to do the calculations ! I looks like some of the equations are still in my memory.
      I thought the bearings on my old fan had failed as it stops quite quickly if you spin it by hand but the new one is much the same. The reason for the large amount of friction is probably the high copper content of the brushes and the high contact force to cope with the 22 Amp running current and to survive the 150 Amp inrush current if you start it with the switch on the high speed position. I would recommend turning the fan off before you turn the ignition key on - that way the inrush current will be limited as you advance the switch through the low speed positions to the full speed position (if required). If not the inrush could well damage or weld the relay that powers the auxiliary circuits.

      One thing I should mention is that the fan uses about 260 W when running at full speed - if you have the aircon on this amount of heat has to be removed before it starts cooling the cabin. However in the winter the heat helps demist / defrost before the cooling water gets warm and the heater starts working. I am not sure what the power used is on the lower speed but the airflow has to cool the resistor which is why it is mounted in the air duct.
