  • I decided to go with a dedicated GPS and stop using my smartphone with Google Maps. In this video, I show you what came with the Garmin 396LMT-S and how I installed it on my 2017 Ural Retro.
I purchased this unit with my own money and as a matter of fact, I'm not fond of Garmin as a company either, so you can expect 100% honesty.

Nice. That’s the same unit I use on my Ural. I really like planning the trips with Basecamp... much easier than trying to plan the route on the unit. I have been pretty happy with mine, but I will say, you still need to have a sense of where you are going, because it (like all GPS units), gets confused sometimes. I used the CA emissions plug that is just laying on top of the air box to be the switched power signal for the unit. Nice!

I've been enjoying it for the most part. Google maps is much better at finding somewhere withing 10 miles to get something to eat, but the Garmin has been far superior for longer planned trips. Especially when I want control of the route we take. If you only ever care about getting from point A to B and that's all, Google Maps will do it. But if you want to make sure you take a specific highway (or you avoid a specific highway) the Garmin with Basecamp is the way to go. That said, I have found the Garmin to offer superior routing in several situations. I asked to take us on trip to a destination we often go to but to do so with the straightest route possible. I would have never considered it, GMaps had never offered it... but it is probably the new way we will always go.

FWIW: I have always used a GPS receiver when navigating in my truck {versus using my smartphone}.
It just seems easier using a dedicated component, versus using my smartphone which has SO MUCH OTHER STUFF on it. Also, your point about getting your phone damaged in an accident is a good one.

I use my BMW Navigator V on my 2017 M70. The unit is used interchangeably on my two BMW bikes and the Ural. I have installed bases on each bike so can move the Navigator from one bike to another depending on which I’m riding. Works great

I ran my Garmin zumo to the battery. Line under the tank. Very easy.

I have so much room in the headlight bucket, switched power right there, no brainer for me.

Good video, this is exactly why I have bought a sat nav, would rather have my phone on me.

My Garmin has a way of finding new routes through places when least expected...it tries to take you in a straight line and has a major love of the slab if left to its own devices. Saying that, at least the Garmin will work when you are not in range of a cell tower. Looking forward to getting Garmin lost with you in the near future. Heading to WV Wednesday in the AM to go play where I learned to ride.

I hoping that doesn't happen. I've calculated a few known routes with it and so far it seems to do a decent job of finding its way. Being a Motorcycle GPS, it is supposed to be able to avoid Interstates, and it seems to do so. Calculated a route to Holopaw and it found one I've never seen GMaps come up with. We shall see!

Looks great! You might try Waze on your phone as a backup. It works WAY better (in my $.02) than Google maps.

I put the cradle together first also 🤦‍♂️. Not sure if it’s just an iPhone issue but the vibrations from the bike have the potential to mess with the camera making it useless. This happened to me and is well documented with other iPhone users having the same issue. These phones are too expensive to replace or fix so that was another reason for me to have a dedicated unit.

Yeah, my Pixel phone's camera no longer stabilizes, works otherwise, but I suspect the handlebar vibrations are what killed it.

@@GoneUraling yea same, the camera doesn’t stabilize I suspect also it’s from the vibrations
