      People prefer smaller dogs now for lots of reasons. And some of the breeds lost their job. And who would want an Otterhound as a pet ? They were always kennel hounds. The bark a lot and loud, smell, drool and have no will to please.

    Smooth Collies would not have to be on the vulnerable list have they not separated them from the Rough Collie in the UK. In the US the breed is one, with two coat varieties, which allows for a larger gene pool to breed from. Separating a breed based off colors or coats only reduces the gene pool...

      They’re having a ton of trouble getting mama dogs to carry litters to term, and when they do, it’s usually only 1-3 pups, which is unusual for large dogs. Nobody I know in the breed can really figure out why.

      @@beansandrunningit’s the closed breeding there is no new blood to bring into the breed they are being bred into extinction the need some new blood but there isn’t any they could find some viable dna from one of the hounds they find buried with warriors and kings from no earlier than 4-5-6 hundred years ago is long ago enough to still get the original IWH and not long ago enough that the dna should still be viable and introduce it into the. Breed just the one bit of dna would go along way towards seeing them healthier and longer lived at least for a while it’s something that would need to be reintroduced into the breed every once and awhile as there are no new ones being bred But it’s the only way I can think of to save them again and a breed that’s over 5,000 yrs old deserves all the chances they can get

    Well if you ever can't find a greyhound in the UK, come to New Zealand. The Canterbury dog rescues are 95% made up of three groups of dogs - collies and huntaways, staffies and other bull terriers, and greyhounds. *Constant* greyhounds. Basically the closest you can get to a low energy breed in our shelter system, but only if you have a large enough fenced space for their once or twice a day zoomies since their off-leash recall can be dubious.

    • @autist1689
      @autist1689 9 місяців тому +13

      we have lots of ex-racers, but they aren't being registered with the kennel club - and probably aren't being ethically bred since the long term care for racing dogs is pretty poor, lots are left for charities to do the work to get them vet care and homes

    • @CL-ve2cm
      @CL-ve2cm 8 місяців тому +4

      In the US here. The idea that greyhounds and soft-coated wheatens are on the verge of disappearing is ludicrous. I could be convinced that the registered numbers are low, but there's plenty of unregistered animals of both breeds. The Irish Red and White Setter was just a color variant until recently and the shallow gene pool of both would be improved by recombining the stud books. The miniature Bull Terrier, being literally the miniature version of the Bull Terrier, doesn't concern me too much. Are we going to see the 13" Beagle in the next exhibition? Let's save our concern and effort for breeds such as the Irish Wolfhound and Deerhound, the Sealyham, the German Pinscher, and the numerous other breeds that are actually in need of conservation.

    • @MairiVoorhees
      @MairiVoorhees 8 місяців тому

      Where I'm from, there are hardly any Deerhound or Greyhound breeders. I've got my ex-racing Greys from Ireland. Wish they would leave the dogs intact before re-homing them. Or stop killing so many off...

    • @astrinymris9953
      @astrinymris9953 8 місяців тому +3

      As far as people in the dog show world go, a dog that can't win a conformation show is "worthless" by definition. So any greyhound that hasn't been registered as a puppy by a recognized kennel club doesn't count as a *real* greyhound. It doesn't matter that they are literally doing the work the breed was created for, they aren't truly greyhounds.
      Also, even if they were registered they wouldn't be able to win a conformation show since the show lines have diverged so much from the working lines that they couldn't win a single point toward the revered status of "champion". The dog show version has evolved some additional curves that have nothing to do with their function, or dogs bred for racing would have them. In the insular world of dog showing, this means working greyhounds are less "fit" than show greyhounds. It's ridiculous, but that's dog show mindset.

    I hate seeing my favorite breed on this list, Bloodhounds, such a gentle floppy breed so lovable and sweet with great tracking abilites. Had one as a child who was good at 2 things, tracking and raising her only litter of 11 pups, never lost any of them, she didn't really need any training to track me, she was born with the drive to track, born from police tracking dog bloodlines, the only difference she had to learn was when her focus required her to track, the difference she learned was the leash and her harness. She knew on just a collar and leash, she didn't need to track and she was to follow, but when her harness was put on she knew it was time for her to lead and track. Me and dad would play hide and seek with her, he was her handler I was the hider. She could find me even if I was transported in a car a short distance away and got out and hid. She was an excellent childhood dog, if I had ever gone missing from our yard as a kid, MY bloodhound would have been the one to find me, not the cops. Which is why my dad got her, I was a wild running all over sort of kid, high energy, he didn't trust cops to try and find me if I went missing, we lived in a bad run down neighborhood at the time so we got a bloodhound and she was a great one, Best dog ever and for me best Breed ever.

      @@recycledMilk I have a Swiss bloodhound. Reilly Jones Skin n Bones, because he used to be. To look at he's a powerful, noble dog whose nose is always working. His gait and stride when he's running free are beautiful, elegant, efficient. He stands proud, posing on the valley side.
      Then I call him and he gambols towards me with his tongue lolling, ears whirling, front legs stiffening and waving in the air. He's a total goofball, a clown. He's also a stubborn, determined, food thief. 1.5 litres of the best lentil & bacon soup I've ever made - just vacuumed down without dislodging the pot. A dog his size shouldn't be able to tip toe! He's also very slippery when he wants to be. When he doesn't want to be sly and slippy he's velcro. I adore him, he's the sweetest laid back fella. My friend is a dog behaviourist (and human trainer) and often uses him to walk with a reactive dog to help them relax. I'm so proud of him for how far he's come and how much he's overcome, from the skinny and broken creature of 5 years ago to now. He loves on everyone/thing he meets. Hard work at times now that he's fully 'himself,' but absolutely worth it!

      @wheatnblue2419 It is. These are actually from ETHICAL breeders. They are titled, belong to the Kennel/Breed Club. They have their dogs health/genetic tested AND certified BEFORE breeding. They have a S/N contract on those they sell as pets. They will take back any pup sold back for whatever reason. Do I need to go on?

      @@happycanadianfarmer what? My post was regarding Crufts and particularly, the KC needing to do more to help vulnerable breeds. My post had nothing to do with whether a breeder is ethical.
      I have vulnerable breeds. This vulnerable breed competition at Crufts has not, since its inception, at all increased the size of those breeds numbers. In fact, numbers have sharply decreased so they are in even greater danger. There needs to be more done to promote these breeds so they are no longer in danger of extinction. Five minutes at Crufts doesn’t cut it.

    • @houndgirl7365
      @houndgirl7365 9 місяців тому

      @happycanadianfarmer belonging to a kennel club does not auto make a breeder ethical. Frankly there should be even more testing such as behavior testing in order to register them like they do in the UK. In the US anyone can just get a papered pup with breeding rights if they have money. Knew one person with 2 German shepherds AKC registered that bred their female to death the dogs weren't even trained 🙄

  • @Kuro_Reaper
    @Kuro_Reaper 8 місяців тому +15

    The vulnerable breeds lists is a bit misunderstood. It's that those breeds are going extinct; it's just breeds with the lowest amount of registered dogs to the Kennel Club.
    The Kennel Club considers any dog that is not of registered bloodline as a crossbreed dog as the line is not recorded. It took them a number of years before you could registered a working line dog as it's breed and not a crossbreed for dog sports.
    2 examples are Greyhounds and Bull Terriers.
    Greyhounds (purebred Greyhounds, not crosses/lurchers) are always coming off the track and are thousands looking for homes in rescues across the UK...The Kennel Club also always teams up with Greyhound Rescues for Crufts. They are not a rare breed at all, the Show Line is rare because the main people breeding Greyhounds are doing so for the Race Lines to make money.
    Bull Terriers (mini) are also not a rare breed. They are actually a very desired breed of dog for people due to their looks. But most people who breed them are not breeding for show, and are just breeding for pets/money/puppies etc.
    There are ofc lesser common breeds on this list that not as many people own, which do have a right to be classed as "Vulnerable". Not many people own Wolfhounds or Bloodhounds these days.

      IDK I 100% want to rescue any future dogs that I have and the dogs Ive had in the past have been rescued. So mixed breeds, if they're from a rescue, I think are wonderful dogs and it's not their fault they were unwanted and needed a home!
      But I agree with the backyard breeding of 'designer' dogs. If i was going to get a purebred, I'd get a cool breed that I actually felt a connection to. Not some generic poodle mix.

      In our city the shelters continue to be filled over capacity. Over 90% of the dogs are pit & bully mixes from backyard breeders. Our state, Ohio, has many puppy mills run by members of Amish communities. Dog fighting also continues here. It is tragic. The emotional toll on people working desperately hard in these rescue organizations is difficult to bear. We must do better to legally protect animals and prosecute those irresponsible owners / breeders who abuse, neglect, and cruelly fail to provide for their welfare.

    I would be quite interested in a few of these breeds. Corgi, wolf hound, deer hound, and mastiff in particular. A setter or spaniel isnt out of the question. Unfortunately, the price tag of purity and perfection is what will likely cause their extinction, not necessarily the lack of interest.

    The mastiff is vulnerable? Is this only in the UK? Here in America I’ve met a number of mastiffs. Unless they’re a different but similar breed? They seemed like they were pure mastiff like the one in the video, not bullmastiff.
    Greyhounds aren’t terribly rare here either. By far the most common of the sighthounds.
    I doubt the ones I’ve met are registered though. Maybe that has something to do with it.

    • @ixiolirion8781

      Foxhounds and greyhounds have their own registers that are separate from the kennel club so they're much more common than the kennel club's figures suggest (and they recognise this in the list) - these two are not rare breeds, although both are much less common than they once were. I'm not sure I've ever come across a mastiff (as opposed to a bullmastiff).
