I’ve never had an afghan, but I have had other sight hounds. Getting them to do anything without a few minutes to think about whether or not they really want to do it is really impressive. Bonus points from me!
I did Freestyle with my last dog, a Flat-Coated Retriever. She loved it. Now we have a 12 year old Galgo Español. He -will- sit for some cheese -IF- we're on the carpet, but not on the hardwood floors - literally turns his nose up at it. I love a dog with enough personal character to tell me to go f@ck off. We're a pair of cranky, grumpy old men. But he''s still faster than any other dog in a 4 village radius here in Switzerland. And always comes back after a chase game for a chin scratch and lick on the liver-pate-tube.
@@musicofnote1 This is why I love hounds and flock guards. No mindless obedience. They think for themselves and they keep you on your toes. And if they don’t want to do something, they won’t. I love them so much!
@@musicofnote1I did a little agility with a galga here in the US. She loved it but didn’t take directions very well and just quit entirely when our classes were moved outside in the summer heat!
What a magnificent dog! My husband & I were GIVEN a pure-bred Afghan hound about 20years ago. He was jet black with a white blaze on his chest. He had the lovliest personality-happy & friendly & stunning looking. We wld walk him along the waterfront in Wgtn NZ on a Sunday afternoon. Lots of people wld stop & say what sort of dog is that? Isnt he lovely? Children wld come up & say can I please pat your dog? He was so good with children. One day there was a little African girl sitting on a low wall along the esplanade. She only looked about 6 or 7-her hair was plaited a la corn-row. She saw our dog coming-jumped off the wall, put her arm round his neck & kissed him on the head! Didnt stop to ask-it was love at 1st sight. That dog brought us nothing but pure joy! He lived for 12 years.
@@noradinneen1 yes, she still romps thru my heart. She was a gift too! I was supposed to ship her from Austin to Chicago to breed with the Best in Show. The owner would keep the pups & I'd get her. However, she had ovarian cysts & had to have a hysterectomy. She was called Miss America & had been in shows Miss
That's awesome! Our dog had 3 cream-coloured sisters, 2 black & 1 brindle brother. They were all very nice-natured except for one of the blacks who was really stand-offish, as Afghans are supposed to be apparently. We were told by the breeders that they can't be trained because they're just too intelligent & they decide whether they will obey you or not. We taught our dog to shake hands & our breeders were very surprised about that. He was a total joy! 😢
I had a pure white Afghan Hound. This is the closest I have ever seen to her colour ever. They say they are the dumbest dogs you can get and they aren’t. They are too smart for their own good. We lived by a walkway beside our house, down the side. She loved to jump on the trampoline to look over our tall fence. One day I heard a little girl scream that we had the biggest dog in the world. I have had three of these dogs and if you love them and give them your time. They will do anything for you.
I have hounds and I know how hard it is to get them to listen to simple commands let alone perform like this. The lady who owns this dog should be absolutely proud of herself for getting such a dog to perform this way! beautiful dog beautiful performance.🎉🎉😊❤❤
I would argue that it is not really "hounds" and rather some sighthound breeds that are especially hard to train. Most whippets I know are very trainable and my galgo español also has a high will to please.😂 however a afghan hound or a barsoi is definetly not easy to train, I know some people that could not even get their hounds to sit or lay down...
@@beansandrunning - My Galgo, Jares, not so much, although he has just a great a re-call as my Flat Coated Retriever did. Of course he's 12.5 now and we've only had him for 2.5 years. While I did Freestyle with my Flattie, I never got the feeling, Jares had a desire to learn tricks, so I never forced it on him.
I had an Afghan hound during 17 years. She (Vishnu) was borned in Spain and raised in Belgium. She was a champion in dog races. ❤ Love very much your exceptional training.
I just saw the wonderful performance in free style music at Crufts 2024 with th Afghan Hound Fabio and Jennifer. My highest complements on this unique wonderful performance by Fsbio and his handler. I was so impressed with the creativity and how well he responds to Jennifer- what a great performance with such a rare breed in this class. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and hope we'll see more of Fabio and Jennifer!❤
I think it has a lot to do with the dedication of the trainer, but I have been told that Fabio is special and unlike other Afghans so I think we both got lucky
A.) I have heard many times that Afghans weren't very bright and were hard to train (this from no one who ever had had one, lol), and B.) This was a really CUTE routine! Great job! What a great name, Fabio, for an Afghan, and Fabio seemed to love what he was doing!
Definitely one of the greatest things I've ever seen. A breed from my top 10 performing to perfection one of my favorite numbers from my favorite Disney film--a song that a friend and I also once performed for a class. Way to show the Border Collies & co. how it's done! As if he knows how magnificent it looks. ;D
All those ninnies who insist dog shows are "cruel" need to watch this one video to see the absolute joy of this gorgeous boy. I adore sighthounds! Had 2 Afghan Hounds, 2 Borzois & an Italian Greyhound. For people concerned that they are racing/running hounds--actually, all of mine were big couch potatoes & very mellow.
Wow 😲 That performance was fabulous ! 👏👏👏👏 Great partnership and the Afghan is as beautiful as his personality 💖 Thank you for sharing ! (watched it twice 😄)
I have wanted a cream colored adghan hound since I was 9 and lived in a foster home with one! He was my best and only friend and comfort! I've never seen another one since in 50 years! I absolutely love this! I would LOVE one here on my little farm with me as my constant companion!
Very creative. Asked a lot of different movements from the dog. Asked for a lot of synchronicity, I thought it was a lot of fun to watch and much more interesting than simple twirls and in and out of the legs. Thanks for telling a story and your great relationship with this apparently very happy dog. You sure get my vote!
Wow an Afghan! Such beautiful dogs but not seen very much in the obedience world. Well done to the trainer, Fabio was so very obviously happy with doing what he needed to do. Wonderful to watch.
Although, unfortunate editing with the wrong score at the end! The dog/trainer Lucrezia (notice the Italian flag also) mentioned was the performance that came AFTER... Coming in 2nd because this dog (Canadian, mentioned at the start) rocketed ahead to take 1st place with a score in the 25s, whereas, up to that point, all other dogs had got 22/23s. I don't know who the final winner was, but this was a really great performance! Also to watch it live in the arena and the reaction from the audience to the camera operator (and then the studio technician choosing that shot to show) filming his wagging tail beneath the blanket was so sweet! ❤
OMG that is the cutest thing ever -- dogs are literally up for ANYTHING. "We sing and dance in my pack!" And it pretty much disproves the old adage about sighthounds not paying their owners any mind!
Agreed:there really ought to be some form of handicapping system: getting a performance out of an Afghan is so much harder than out of a Border Collie or poodle for instance
Exceptional. I had two afghans, half-brothers. The breed is more cat than dog. The concept of "eager to please" is unknown to the afghan. They may shower you with kisses but never an apology. Some do love to perform. They know when the spotlight is on and they thrive on the energy. Though regal and elegant in appearance they are clowns, extremely clever thieves, and will scream blue murder if they stub a toe. That does not happen often because their grace and agility defies belief. It is uncommon to see an afghan in an obedience competition so Fabio's performance was truly something to see.
FABIO-LOUS! Excellent, heartwarming, and has me missing my Basenji mix, Lola. She's with another fam now, but she used to dance, too, when I sang her song. THIS was delightful. Better than watching any Easter Parade.
He's gorgeous and what great work!! My first greyhound was so super smart, would do whatever and could do some pretty impressive and complex tricks. My 2nd can't be bothered...lol

If I didn't let my afghan back in the house as soon as she wanted, she would jump the 6 foot privacy fence and go sit at my front door. Always reminding me she would do exactly what she wanted to do. And she could run away but didn't want to. She was my whole heart.
I was amazed at how well that maid was trained. Here in the US we don't have too many maids so we just assume they are not really good at presenting in front of a large audience. I think the dog helped a lot because it seemed to cue her in to the correct movements when she got mixed up.
I think a lot of people won't understand why this is really so impressive. Afghan's are often called the world's dumbest dog breed because they're just so independent and resistant to training.
