CHICAGO /Terry Kath- Little One LIVE (1977)

  • CHICAGO performs "Little One" at the Los Angeles Forum on November 22, 1977. The original CHICAGO would only perform together 4 more shows. The last being 9 days later in Oakland. I think this song pretty much speaks for itself. Danny and Hawk wrote a beautiful melody and lyric. Danny has stated that he could only hear Terry sing this and he sang it like it was his own. This video is dedicated to Terry's lovely and talented daughter, Michelle.
Audio is courtesy of Terry Kath (it's true). He did pass, in this life, 2 months later. Thankfully, he shared this recording with a dear friend of mine a few weeks earlier.
Photos were also taken on this night by my friend, Gary Colón.
Thanks to Terry and Gary, I was able to marry the two into this special video. Many thanks.

It's great hearing a live version of "Little One" from Chicago 11, with its jazz influenced R&B sound. I love Lee's trumpet solo over Laudir's percussive streak, but the real star on this is Terry, no doubt about it. We all know what an absolute monster on guitar he really was, but the man could sing! He had a great blue eyed soul voice, and it's not difficult to understand why he was called "the white Ray Charles". I loved the way he sang, and that's one of the things I miss about the original band. Rest in power Terry, you are missed...

I just watched the Terry Kath Experience documentary for the first time a couple of nights ago.
A.) I have always thought that (with the Inner Struggles of Man/Prelude) that this was a very well crafted, highly underrated masterpiece. I know Danny Seraphine wrote it but it feels like Terry could have written it. Hearing it at the end of that documentary just makes the whole situation so much more poignant. I hope this is something that Michelle has passed on to her children.
B.) I had always heard the stories about Terry wanting to go solo, and after If You Leave Me Now and Baby What A Big Surprise, I can't say I blame him.Because I am sure he must of been thinking( and Robert Lamm kind of alludes to it), "This is not what I signed up for". But when you go back and listen to pretty much anything on those first 3 albums, it seems that his playing with those horn players was a match made in heaven. And when you listen to this song his powerful vocal as it crescendos over that powerful music as the song finishes, it shows me that there was still some magic left in the tank.
Thanks Terry and Chicago for giving me music that has been a large part of the Soundtrack to my life.
    R.I.P. Terry

I was at this concert. My first concert ever. Such a great memory. Terry Kath was sooo talented. Best ever in my opinion. Then I saw them the next year at the Greek with Donnie Dacus…..but Chicago was never the same without Terry. For me he was the heart and soul of the band.

Danny wrote this with David "Hawk" Wolinski (they also wrote "Take Me Back To Chicago"). Danny wrote the lyrics for his own little girl, but Terry sang for his own little girl, Michelle.

I met and briefly chatted with Danny Seraphine after the 2016 Toronto Film Festival premiere of the documentary about Terry Kath. We discussed this song. He said back when he showed the freshly written lyrics to Kath, Kath said, “Aww, you gotta let me sing this one.” And so it was. Kath’s first, and only, child was a baby at the time. No wonder he wanted to sing it and sang it so well. His heart was truly in it. That baby, Kath’s daughter, Michelle, produced the documentary. I’m one of the people who helped crowd fund it. Watch it here: ua-cam.com/video/f7egJTtz10E/v-deo.html

He was ripped out of their lives instantly, after playing and being together for at least 10 years!! I am still truly amazed they chose to continue on. They were pretty brave to do so.

Great song. Best that Seraphine ever wrote. And Kath? Well, Chicago carried on, even had success in the 80s, but they were never quite the same. I think loss of Kath also affected Lamm's songwriting. They were apparently great friends

So gifted a guitarist was Terry Kath, that Jimi Hendrix was a huge fan. With a baritone singing voice and style so bluesy and soulful, Terry was nicknamed "The White Ray Charles".
Terry never had vocal coaching ... eventually he did take lessons to learn jazz chords and structures, but throughout most of his career he composed and played solely by ear. Terry's music college-educated band mates were admittedly always in awe of his natural talent ... and there's no doubt as to why in the minds of anyone who has ever heard him.
January 23, 1978: Through an accidental self-inflicted fatal gunshot wound to the head, it all came to a screeching halt in a fraction of an instant for Terry Kath, 8 days before he was to turn 32 years young. According to official reports and eyewitness accounts:
Terry spent the afternoon at the Woodland Hills, CA home of band crew member Donny Johnson, visiting and drinking with friends. The party broke up and only Kath and Johnson remained. Terry took out two guns he was carrying. First he spun his .38 revolver on his finger like a western gunslinger. He brought the .38 to his temple, and pulled the trigger ... but the gun was not loaded.
Next, Terry picked up his 9mm semi-automatic pistol. Donny Johnson urged Terry to stop playing around and to put the guns away. Kath pulled the magazine out of the gun, placed the gun to his temple, declared the gun was not loaded and pulled the trigger. Due to a safety mechanism on this model, the 9mm did not fire; however, Terry re-inserted the clip, and upon doing so, the round in the chamber re-engaged.
Donny insisted that Terry stop fooling with the gun, to which Terry declared, "Don't worry. It's not loaded! See?" as he raised the pistol to his head. Terry pulled the trigger, and unlike the first time without the clip, the pistol did fire. The re-engaged round fatally wounded him; he died instantly.
Terry left behind a young wife Camellia and a 2 year old daughter Michelle.

So far the only evidence of this tune being performed live was from the 1978 tour with Dacus. But now I hear a live version with TK and it's even better. When Kath was no longer with us, Chicago's sound changed considerably. It's hard to replace TK's soulful singing and warm guitar sound.

I was very fortunate to see Terry perform with the band at the LA Forum before his tragic death. It happened to be my very first concert. Seen the band many times since. I have to say that I disagree with statements by original band members that the band will live on even if they one day need to be replaced. The band that once was is no longer; they should market themselves with Roman Numerals to mark each change the band has made re: new members

The clarity of this recording is remarkable in its own right. It sounds as though Peter is plucking those bass strings in my living room, and man, is he playing his tail off or what?! Ditto for Danny and Terry, as always. What a rhythm section they were.

Listen to the latest album "Chicago XXXVI" and songs like "More will be revealed", "Free at last", "Something's coming, I know", "Watching all the colors" and "Naked in the garden of Allah". Well ChicagoKid, what can I say? I have chills.... You have outdone even yourself here (and I thought that was darn near impossible)! I want to thank you so much for all of your wonderful posts, but really thank you for this gem. Terry... what a treasure, what an incredible loss! The picture of him and Michelle at 0:40 is just so beautiful; I never tire of seeing it. I hope in some small way this song comforts her. Keep up the great work, we're all counting on you!

I didn't know they ever did this one live. Danny and Hawk wrote some beautiful stuff for them. Very poignant.

This is an AMAZING tune and video. I know that for me, when i listened to this back in the day I loved it, and now having a child it resonates soo true for me. To feel once again the love the love you bring in.
Is the sheet music for this tune available anywhere?? I've looked in all the CHicago books, and this is not in any of them. Any assistance with this would be great.
    Thanks,
    Rg

I've been a musician all my life. And shame to say didn't know much about Terry till bout 3 r 4 yrs ago. But I know it was born in him. The guitar ability is amazing. But his voice puts a lump in my throat every time. Rip, Terry . Some proletariat say I sound just like him. Check out my video (Terrykathsoundalike).
