Terry's Band Leading,Rhythm Playing,Singing,Soloing, Writing,and in the moment drive is beyond compare!! What a team player, like the best point guards in basketball,Terry kept everyone in the groove and playing their personal best!!! Dedicated, I don't even think he recorded a solo album, he's on the Mt Rushmore of 60's/70's rock unconditionally in my book!
I saw him just a week before this when I was in Pittsburgh and I did not recognize him at first. He gained so much weight. I even asked my friend "Is it him" ? Just then he turned towards me and then I knew...I was only 5 rows back. But one thing for sure is that he never missed a note playing or singing...the man was so good. There's some isolated guitar work of him out there on some "Chicago" stuff that really gives you a hint of how good he was as a player. I'm so glad his daughter put that fantastic documentary together to honor him. He truly deserved that !
I was at this concert in Houston, 1977. The same experience happened to me. I didn’t recognize him either. We were very close up at the side and Terry came forward to sing a lead song I was surprised. We didn’t have the internet or anything like that back then so you never really saw many pictures except on album covers or magazines. Great performance though. Beautiful, rich voice and unbelievably talented guitarist.
Terry Kath and Peter Cetera were and are the heart and soul of Chicago for me.Peter is an underrated bassist too.Love to see Terry and Peter singing together! Chicago was not the same without Terry for sure. RIP Terry Kath

He personally grew weary and hated the volume of touring that the band had to do, and decided a break was necessary so he could focus more attention on recording a second solo album. The original comment wasn’t specifying an actual timeline, so the facts are relevant. Yes, Robert Lamm DID leave, post-Kath tragedy, but he returned to Chicago after a break and is still touring with the band (and is 1 of 3 original co-founders- James Pankow and Lee Loughnane are the other original members - still touring to this day. Cetera isn’t. And likely might never return, as he’s considered “retired” from the industry and happily living in Idaho).
After Terry's passing they had to hire 2 guys to fill his shoes, and in my opinion...they never could fill his shoes. That is a testament to just how incredibly gifted Terry Kath was!
Holy shit! I just had to stop the video in the middle of 25 or 624.... Terry just blew me away!! I always knew he was one of the best, but his solo in this tune.... Omg ! I just kept yellin " yeah Terry! Wow! Man! You rock Terry!" And at the end. I stood up and clapped my hands and screamed " whooooooooo!!!! Yeah!!!! Ha ha ha. Scared the shit outta my friends!! I Went to this show. I wasn't really into Chicago anymore at this time, but my friend had an extra ticket, so I went not expecting much... I was Blown away!!! What a great show!!!
So hard to believe that a short three months and ten days later we'd lose Terry Kath 😞 It happened three miles away from my house in Woodland Hills California. He was a monster on the guitar 🎸
Indeed he was. I play every single musical instrument there is. And I'm only pointing this out because, I won't be satisfied until I am able to incorporated Terry's structural stability in my playing. There is NO getting around his greatness.
Compared to earlier vids, Terry does not look healthy. His voice is not as strong here. He looks a little "out of it." In an interview with Lamm, he said Terry worried them because he became very involved with a "personal" dealer. They all admit to partying, but Terry was changing. Even his wife said he was becoming more secluded toward the end. This came from Terry's daughter, through the film she made about Terry.
Saw them at the Spectrum in Philly within weeks of this show. They opened with Dialogue and it kicked in as soon as we got thru the tunnel into the arena. We were within a few rows of the stage and Terry had a white hot spot light on him, and was wailing the guitar intro like a freight train, and we were froze in our tracks. Will never forget that moment. Miss you man.
The incredible of all of that is Terry Kath ...with that big round body ...one would think that he was a heavy weight lifter in the Olympics ...unable to take a guitar and even play the tab of D...but when he gets the guitar, which seems to be a little toy in his big hands...and he starts to play...yyyyeeeeks ...oh my God...WWWWWOOOOWWWW...you fall in love with his incredible talent...hell yes ...a super genius......Clapton...Hendrix...surely felt jealous when saw him...or maybe not...end simply they thought: ...this guy is in our level...in our select club...of super genius.
Even when they were missing cues to start songs and our Terry sounded tired as hell especially vocally, Chicago were World Class as a band. The only reason I say vocally with Terry, is because he's from another planet and can play better than virtually anyone that was ever born even fucked up. So glad we are able to all these years later still listen to for my money one of the greatest bands ever.
He's still here but my heart breaks that in three months he'll be gone. 40 years later, life's not the same without the genius of TK. Everybody loves him.
The day I heard of his passing on the radio was a shocking blow. In my world, the tragic event would have been THE news story for days. I remember the neighborhood I was driving through that sunny afternoon. I ran up on a certain kind of dead end that day. I wanted to blame someone or something, but it was what it was, and it had to be endured plain and simple. I played Chicago eight-tracks w/o ceasing and Chicago albums over and over again. I tried to play my acoustic Epiphone guitar out of a great Chicago songbook. Chicago posters from the Live at Carnegie Hall box set of albums on my wall. I include favorite cuts on my cd-r's and mp3, namely Song for Girl from Buchanon suite, Hour in the Shower, Questions 67 & 68, Beginnings, Mississippi Delta City Blues. RIP Terry Kath. Unfortunately Chicago was over with, no disrespect intended for those who carried on. What else could you do?

All I can say is UA-cam is the greatest thing that ever happened to me in my life I'm 55 years. Because I get diverted magically do a video like this of one of my favorite bands the sound of my childhood and Adolescence. Greatest memories ever the memories of my parents my neighborhood on Long Island my high school GarageBand my buddies. And I have to admit I never really knew much about the band because I never saw much live footage. Terry Kath was the most Soulful singer. Sorry folks but he doesn't sound like a white man. He is the Ray Charles of that band. What a wonderful surprise. Into the favorites it goes

I saw "Chicago" a week before this concert and being a huge Terry Kath fan, I couldn't wait. I was 5 rows back from the front. When he came out on stage...I did not recognize him... He had gained so much weight. I asked my buddy next to me "Is that him" ? "I think so" he said and right at that moment Terry turned towards me and I saw it was him. Now, in those days you didn't see tons of photos like you do now, what with the internet and everything and it could be yrs between photos you would see of your favorite bands. He never missed a beat though..not singing or playing. A little over 90 days later, he'd be dead. It was terrible. I'll never forget him !
Cetera's interest in music began at 11 years of age when his parents bought him an accordion instead of the guitar he wanted. When he was 15, some older students from his high school took him to a club to see a band called The Rebel Rockers, which led to his purchasing an acoustic guitar at Montgomery Ward. He eventually took up the electric bass, and with some high school friends-a drummer, guitarist and saxophone player-Cetera began playing the local dance circuit, dividing lead vocals with the guitarist. Cetera played in several groups in the Chicago area, including a popular local rock band named The Exceptions, which toured the Midwest in the mid-1960s. They released several singles and a five-song seven-inch EP titled Rock 'N' Roll Mass. Cetera is quoted as saying, " 'By the time I was 18 I was making more money than my dad.

In high school during the summer, Cetera and his buddies would head over to the Indiana Dunes (a Lake Michigan beach area) where he'd just sit there and noodle on guitar (and attract girls) while the other guys got drunk, puked and passed out. I visited that beach last year and pictured that whole scene while seeing the distant, faint outline of Chicago's skyline. Any Chicago/Cetera fan should do that at least once. Plus the Indiana Dunes really are nice. Cetera truly was a guy who chose the road less traveled, and he was all the better for it.
Chicago and the Beatles are my two favorite groups. I think that Peter was a better base player and singer than McCartney. Of course, McCartney had Lennon to co-write many songs.
@@thomasmaxwell8353 You aren't incorrect - he has been snarky and douchy in regards to Chicago. I used to be more critical of him for that, but after reading Danny's book and watching how the core members have handled the business end of the band, I now understand Peter a lot better - they're about touring and making money, no matter who is on that stage. That was the case in 85 when he wanted a break and they wanted another album and tour, it was the case when Danny was voted out of the band, and is the case now as players come and go without much of the public knowing or noticing. Even with that, we only see the tip of the iceberg. To me, that's what makes a video like this so great - how great they were with Terry, when they were a songwriting unit that cranked out only great albums.

I'm so behind the times... Only recently did I REALLY dig into Chicago's music.. And I just learned of Terry ,, very tragic. Man played AWESOME..I suggest watch the Terry Kath Experience, a documentary on his life. It was made by his daughter...loved it !! Rest in Peace Terry..
Agree with everything everyone has said; Peter’s, Bobby’s and Terry’s leads and harmonies were AMAZING. EVERYONE’S playing was absolutely stellar. -Terry was definitely in need of interventions to get him cleaned up and help him through his depression. -Peter have should have been allowed, and even encouraged, to do solo work while also working with Chicago. -Chicago should have tried to maintain their very innovative horn-driven and guitar-driven jazz-rock fusion music somehow. When they became a pop ballad band, they lost, sadly, their innovative and unique sound. -Firing Danny, the one who originally put the band together, and who was a fantastic and creative drummer, was a bad move too…

Danny got into one of those slumps & had a problem keeping time. I listened to Bernard Purdie & even he said that a sound engineer told him to start using a click track, (like he would need one.) At any rate, I thought I'd comment because I know we're not the only ones out here that feel that way....
" My Personal Tribute for Terry " - - - All through my lifetime i have never - ever known him or anything about him - other than i knew someone else in that Band did sing a few of the Fantastic songs known as - Chicago - . I never comprehended just how " Out of this World " he played the Guitar & Sang . I never had the Privilege of seeing him performing , until this particular Video . This young man had an Unbelievable Talent of not only being able to sing , but to play the Guitar to extreme Perfection . He had way more Passion , Heart , & Soul in his entire body than most of us today . If he would still be with us - what more could we have been able to behold in our Music World of Today . His way of doing things & the words he sang is what caught my Attention ! I'm sure he was a Talent that probably wasn't Appreciated as he Soulfully deserved . He could of had a " One in a Million " Future Career , but so sadly was taken away from us too soon . But , lets not Cry Sad Tears - - As in my Heart & Soul i know he is now in a place where he is Living w/ Jesus through God and has to be Very Happy & So Proud of his Accomplishments in which he was able to Achieve before he left us . He was Big then & if here Today would definitely been : Larger than Life Itself !

They actually just announced another tour with Earth Wind and Fire next yr, and they'll be here in Nashville in August. Of course, neither band is the same as they were then. That goes for The Stones too. But somehow they keep it all going, and I'm so proud of all three bands
I'm re-watching the little jam Terry threw together at the end of the Ballet, just before Now More Than Ever. I'm thinking, "Dang - and this is that poor soul at top weight, beat up by drugs, fighting personal discouragement... and he STILL blows that magic right through that guitar." You can't help but wonder, and imagine: what if he'd been able to clean up, get it together, and stay with us to today? Particularly if he'd let Chicago head off into Balladville, gone solo, and gone back to jazz-rock and all the everything-else he could do. What more sheer brilliance would we have today? So, so sad.
I agree with you. If Terry was still around, he would have left Chicago by the 1980s. I think he would have gone in a blues/rock direction and made some well received albums showing his guitar skills and his gritty voice of course.
You are very insightful and knowledgeable, assuming there is some biographical or informational context for what you are saying....I was aghast to see how much weight growth had affected him between the early 70's and when these last concert footage reels were from....Kath had clearly ballooned, hadn't he? Clearly, no one in his right mind plays a game of Russian Roulette with a loaded weapon without either being psychologically disturbed/ill or suffering from extreme drug intoxication/paralysis and/or mental depression or psychosis. Never realized how gifted this guy was both in the vocal context and on the guitar. He had some serious chops and he sounded like an African American with outstanding timbre and resonance. He and Cetera were quite a force back then musically, weren't they?
It's had to believe that this performance is approximately 2 & 1/2 months before Terry's passing! Sad! Luckily I saw Chicago a few times, the first time being at the "Texas International Pop Festival" on Labor Day Weekend in 1969! One of my best memories for sure! I remember right after "Chicago Transit Authority" played that night, "Sam & Dave" came on to perform and Terry was standing right behind Sam & Dave on stage and was literally dancing and grooving on stage during Sam & Dave's whole performance. He was a fan too!
Looks like the guys were having fun & I'm sure the audience fed them a lot of energy. Saw Kath smiling now & then. Wish I were there, even just to hear Kath's riffs! And course the 3 vocalists are hard to beat besides the horns & Danny on drums. Rest in peace, Terry.
They did this performance exactly 40 years today which was Robert Lamm's birthday and also my birthday. It is amazing to still see these guys out there performing today in their 70's. I only wish Terry was still alive as I really believe he would have done what Peter did - leave the band and go solo. He would have been great.

You want close to Terry's vocal, listen to Chicago tribute band, Leonid & Friends, from Russia! Holy cow, these peeps are spot on, & great recording/video production! Nice to hear great music appreciated, & carried on! My 1st real concert @ 13 yrs old: 'Chicago Transit Authority', in June, 1968, @ their 1st Fillmore, San Francisco gig, a year before their 1st album. Santana opened, 1year before their 1st album; & headliner was Big Brother & The Holding Co., with Janis Joplin! Had Just moved there from 30 miles out of small town, central WA., literally end of paved road. Can still play all that music in my head, just as it sounded there. & was this odd, thick, sweet smell in the air I couldn't identify(?).. musta been northern Ca.homegrown; doesn't smell nice like that, now. I'm a lifelong percussionist, & I liked jazz, so I was in heaven; Santana with 3 percussionists, Chicago's drummer Danny Seraphim, & Horns! Saw Chicago & Santana few more times over the years; grateful..
Loved Terry Kath's brilliant guitar work, since CTA's first album in 1969 ! Huge thanks for posting this gig & for keeping his memory & that of CTA alive ! Even Jimi Hendrix lauded Terry Kath's great guitar work ! That in itself is a feather in his many feathered 'headdress' !
Terry Kath is, was and will be the greatest guitarist to date, and I loved Eddie and love Eric. But Terry played rhythm and lead while singing and blistering solos no one can touch while touring schedule that I think broke him. He was unhappy with new Chicago. His band had left the stage. Terry deserves to be recognized as one of the greatest guitarists of all time.
As vital to the sound of this band, like each and every one of them, is Danny killin those grooves on drums......its never been remotely the same groove since u left dude, thank you so much......they might have changed drummers, but never ever will they replace you.
Terry was so unhappy with the direction of the band. This concert gives the impression that he wanted to leave Chicago to start his own solo project at the time of his passing. God rest his soul, may he Rest In Peace!

Chicago, still fantastic all these years later. Kath is such a monster player--rock solid time, outstanding chops--a great voice. The band as a whole is really outstanding. Check out this transition from Ballet For A Girl In Buchannon to the next tune: Horn soli sets up Kath's solo, sets up the horns repeating the last three notes on top of the organ pad, drops down a minor 3rd and plays that dark line! 22:42

I'm so sorry I never got to see kath play live. One thing I know is if you get Chicago's greatest hits and play it in your car loud it's one of the most amazing music I've ever heard. I was old enough to see them then but I don't have a clue why I didn't peruse it harder. But I wouldn't waist my time seeing Chicago know. Not in the least bit interested. Sorry TCA fans. WOW.........JUST...........WOW!!!!!!!!! This was one hellava concert.......can you imagine having been there live??? This has to be THE BEST "Ballet" I have ever seen....in concert or on video due to Terry's magic!!! Terry's, Peter's, & Robert's voices just jelled soooooooo beautifully together on every song! And the individual "spin" each of them put on every song was incredible!! Every single one of them were at the top of their game and showed what talented, gifted musicians they are/were(RIP Terry & Laudir)! (Ya think Peter, Terry, Robert, and Walt all went to the same barber/hairdresser?? lol Same basic cut with some variations!! ) FANTABULOUS! PURE-AWESOMENESS!!! David Foster....worst thing for the band . Egomaniac extraordinaire, never understood the band musically, and completely forced them in a very unnatural direction and way of playing. And his smug ego STILL doesn't " get it".
Finally, Robert Lamm is visible. 40+ year old video is limited, and Lamm had no problem with Kath and Cetera fronting the band. Footage from that ancient age sometimes misses a lot, but not here.
Terry Kath was a great loss. But on this gig he was alive and well. Peter Cetera was really showing his incredible vocals. I have to say that this set shows him less focused on his bass playing. It is good. But not what he was doing just 10 years earlier. Thank you for this great video show Terry while he was still living and performing. This was a great great band. When they began they were ahead of their time.
I remember recording this off of AM radio to my cassette recorder. I wore that song out!! Chicago is forever in my heart. Love you Terry. Gone too soon. He's a legend!! 💞💞💞

I was there also my first concert 16 years old ! The Hanna family took me to this show and Niel Diamond with Cat Stevens opening for another concert so much fun... Today I play guitar and build them because of this influence I made my own tele and its got a black hawk Indian sticker on it right now not cause I love Hockey because of Terry. R.I.P. Terry
Poor Terry, you could see he was a physical mess by this point. I saw one of their last shows and I didn't even recognize him but he played great as always. RIP
Terry looks like he's just going thru the motions, bored with it all. while Peter reminds me of a wedding singer with that outfit. He's loving all the notoriety. it all makes sense now that we know what happened in the future.. Through it all TK still sounds great and plays that guitar flawlessly
What a great musician with a soulful voice of that of Ray Charles. Hendrix was quoted as saying Terry Kath was a better guitarist than him. Sadly this was only three months before his untimely death.

Indeed he was. I play every single musical instrument there is. And I'm only pointing this out because, I won't be satisfied until I am able to incorporated Terry's structural stability in my playing. There is NO getting around his greatness.
Compared to earlier vids, Terry does not look healthy. His voice is not as strong here. He looks a little "out of it." In an interview with Lamm, he said Terry worried them because he became very involved with a "personal" dealer. They all admit to partying, but Terry was changing. Even his wife said he was becoming more secluded toward the end. This came from Terry's daughter, through the film she made about Terry.

They were all excellent musicians in this band, but Peter and Terry really stood out. Their vocals and talent together really made that band.

Saw them at the Spectrum in Philly within weeks of this show. They opened with Dialogue and it kicked in as soon as we got thru the tunnel into the arena. We were within a few rows of the stage and Terry had a white hot spot light on him, and was wailing the guitar intro like a freight train, and we were froze in our tracks. Will never forget that moment. Miss you man.

The incredible of all of that is Terry Kath ...with that big round body ...one would think that he was a heavy weight lifter in the Olympics ...unable to take a guitar and even play the tab of D...but when he gets the guitar, which seems to be a little toy in his big hands...and he starts to play...yyyyeeeeks ...oh my God...WWWWWOOOOWWWW...you fall in love with his incredible talent...hell yes ...a super genius......Clapton...Hendrix...surely felt jealous when saw him...or maybe not...end simply they thought: ...this guy is in our level...in our select club...of super genius.

RIP Terry Kath, who we lost 40 yrs ago today on 1/23/78. :'( I'm from Houston and went to concerts at The Summit many times.
Saw chicago in philadelphia in 77, last time seeing Terry Kath. Such talent ending too soon.
Last time I saw the band with Terry: August 1976. Small IHL hockey stadium in Kalamazoo, Mich. Awesome night.
Even when they were missing cues to start songs and our Terry sounded tired as hell especially vocally, Chicago were World Class as a band. The only reason I say vocally with Terry, is because he's from another planet and can play better than virtually anyone that was ever born even fucked up. So glad we are able to all these years later still listen to for my money one of the greatest bands ever.

The day I heard of his passing on the radio was a shocking blow. In my world, the tragic event would have been THE news story for days. I remember the neighborhood I was driving through that sunny afternoon. I ran up on a certain kind of dead end that day. I wanted to blame someone or something, but it was what it was, and it had to be endured plain and simple. I played Chicago eight-tracks w/o ceasing and Chicago albums over and over again. I tried to play my acoustic Epiphone guitar out of a great Chicago songbook. Chicago posters from the Live at Carnegie Hall box set of albums on my wall. I include favorite cuts on my cd-r's and mp3, namely Song for Girl from Buchanon suite, Hour in the Shower, Questions 67 & 68, Beginnings, Mississippi Delta City Blues. RIP Terry Kath. Unfortunately Chicago was over with, no disrespect intended for those who carried on. What else could you do?

All I can say is UA-cam is the greatest thing that ever happened to me in my life I'm 55 years. Because I get diverted magically do a video like this of one of my favorite bands the sound of my childhood and Adolescence. Greatest memories ever the memories of my parents my neighborhood on Long Island my high school GarageBand my buddies. And I have to admit I never really knew much about the band because I never saw much live footage. Terry Kath was the most Soulful singer. Sorry folks but he doesn't sound like a white man. He is the Ray Charles of that band. What a wonderful surprise. Into the favorites it goes

I saw "Chicago" a week before this concert and being a huge Terry Kath fan, I couldn't wait. I was 5 rows back from the front. When he came out on stage...I did not recognize him... He had gained so much weight. I asked my buddy next to me "Is that him" ? "I think so" he said and right at that moment Terry turned towards me and I saw it was him. Now, in those days you didn't see tons of photos like you do now, what with the internet and everything and it could be yrs between photos you would see of your favorite bands. He never missed a beat though..not singing or playing. A little over 90 days later, he'd be dead. It was terrible. I'll never forget him !

Somehow he learned to play bass quite well. He has a musicality about him.
Cetera's interest in music began at 11 years of age when his parents bought him an accordion instead of the guitar he wanted. When he was 15, some older students from his high school took him to a club to see a band called The Rebel Rockers, which led to his purchasing an acoustic guitar at Montgomery Ward. He eventually took up the electric bass, and with some high school friends-a drummer, guitarist and saxophone player-Cetera began playing the local dance circuit, dividing lead vocals with the guitarist. Cetera played in several groups in the Chicago area, including a popular local rock band named The Exceptions, which toured the Midwest in the mid-1960s. They released several singles and a five-song seven-inch EP titled Rock 'N' Roll Mass. Cetera is quoted as saying, " 'By the time I was 18 I was making more money than my dad.

In high school during the summer, Cetera and his buddies would head over to the Indiana Dunes (a Lake Michigan beach area) where he'd just sit there and noodle on guitar (and attract girls) while the other guys got drunk, puked and passed out. I visited that beach last year and pictured that whole scene while seeing the distant, faint outline of Chicago's skyline. Any Chicago/Cetera fan should do that at least once. Plus the Indiana Dunes really are nice. Cetera truly was a guy who chose the road less traveled, and he was all the better for it.

Chicago and the Beatles are my two favorite groups. I think that Peter was a better base player and singer than McCartney. Of course, McCartney had Lennon to co-write many songs.

I used to be more critical of him for that, but after reading Danny's book and watching how the core members have handled the business end of the band, I now understand Peter a lot better - they're about touring and making money, no matter who is on that stage. That was the case in 85 when he wanted a break and they wanted another album and tour, it was the case when Danny was voted out of the band, and is the case now as players come and go without much of the public knowing or noticing. Even with that, we only see the tip of the iceberg. To me, that's what makes a video like this so great - how great they were with Terry, when they were a songwriting unit that cranked out only great albums.

I'm so behind the times... Only recently did I REALLY dig into Chicago's music.. And I just learned of Terry ,, very tragic. Man played AWESOME..I suggest watch the Terry Kath Experience, a documentary on his life. It was made by his daughter...loved it !!

Agree with everything everyone has said; Peter’s, Bobby’s and Terry’s leads and harmonies were AMAZING. EVERYONE’S playing was absolutely stellar.
-Terry was definitely in need of interventions to get him cleaned up and help him through his depression.
-Peter have should have been allowed, and even encouraged, to do solo work while also working with Chicago.
-Chicago should have tried to maintain their very innovative horn-driven and guitar-driven jazz-rock fusion music somehow. When they became a pop ballad band, they lost, sadly, their innovative and unique sound.
-Firing Danny, the one who originally put the band together, and who was a fantastic and creative drummer, was a bad move too…

Danny got into one of those slumps & had a problem keeping time. I listened to Bernard Purdie & even he said that a sound engineer told him to start using a click track, (like he would need one.) I never comprehended just how " Out of this World " he played the Guitar & Sang .
I never had the Privilege of seeing him performing , until this particular Video .
This young man had an Unbelievable Talent of not only being able to sing , but to play the Guitar to extreme Perfection . He had way more Passion , Heart , & Soul in his entire body than most of us today . If he would still be with us - what more could we have been able to behold in our Music World of Today . His way of doing things & the words he sang is what caught my Attention ! I'm sure he was a Talent that probably wasn't Appreciated as he Soulfully deserved .
He could of had a " One in a Million " Future Career , but so sadly was taken away from us too soon .
But , lets not Cry Sad Tears - - As in my Heart & Soul i know he is now in a place where he is Living w/ Jesus through God and has to be Very Happy & So Proud of his Accomplishments in which he was able to Achieve before he left us .

They actually just announced another tour with Earth Wind and Fire next yr, and they'll be here in Nashville in August. Of course, neither band is the same as they were then. That goes for The Stones too. But somehow they keep it all going, and I'm so proud of all three bands

I'm re-watching the little jam Terry threw together at the end of the Ballet, just before Now More Than Ever. I'm thinking, "Dang - and this is that poor soul at top weight, beat up by drugs, fighting personal discouragement... and he STILL blows that magic right through that guitar."
You can't help but wonder, and imagine: what if he'd been able to clean up, get it together, and stay with us to today? Particularly if he'd let Chicago head off into Balladville, gone solo, and gone back to jazz-rock and all the everything-else he could do. What more sheer brilliance would we have today?

I agree with you. If Terry was still around, he would have left Chicago by the 1980s. I think he would have gone in a blues/rock direction and made some well received albums showing his guitar skills and his gritty voice of course.

You are very insightful and knowledgeable, assuming there is some biographical or informational context for what you are saying....I was aghast to see how much weight growth had affected him between the early 70's and when these last concert footage reels were from....Kath had clearly ballooned, hadn't he? Clearly, no one in his right mind plays a game of Russian Roulette with a loaded weapon without either being psychologically disturbed/ill or suffering from extreme drug intoxication/paralysis and/or mental depression or psychosis. Never realized how gifted this guy was both in the vocal context and on the guitar. He had some serious chops and he sounded like an African American with outstanding timbre and resonance. He and Cetera were quite a force back then musically, weren't they?
When I see him, all I can think of is his famous last words: "Don't worry, it's not loaded."

It's had to believe that this performance is approximately 2 & 1/2 months before Terry's passing! Sad! Luckily I saw Chicago a few times, the first time being at the "Texas International Pop Festival" on Labor Day Weekend in 1969! One of my best memories for sure! I remember right after "Chicago Transit Authority" played that night, "Sam & Dave" came on to perform and Terry was standing right behind Sam & Dave on stage and was literally dancing and grooving on stage during Sam & Dave's whole performance. He was a fan too!
Looks like the guys were having fun & I'm sure the audience fed them a lot of energy. Saw Kath smiling now & then. Wish I were there, even just to hear Kath's riffs! And course the 3 vocalists are hard to beat besides the horns & Danny on drums. Rest in peace, Terry.
They did this performance exactly 40 years today which was Robert Lamm's birthday and also my birthday. It is amazing to still see these guys out there performing today in their 70's. I only wish Terry was still alive as I really believe he would have done what Peter did - leave the band and go solo. He would have been great.

My 1st real concert @ 13 yrs old: 'Chicago Transit Authority', in June, 1968, @ their 1st Fillmore, San Francisco gig, a year before their 1st album. Santana opened, 1year before their 1st album; & headliner was Big Brother & The Holding Co., with Janis Joplin!
Had Just moved there from 30 miles out of small town, central WA., literally end of paved road. Can still play all that music in my head, just as it sounded there. & was this odd, thick, sweet smell in the air I couldn't identify(?).. musta been northern Ca.homegrown; doesn't smell nice like that, now. I'm a lifelong percussionist, & I liked jazz, so I was in heaven; Santana with 3 percussionists, Chicago's drummer Danny Seraphim, & Horns! Saw Chicago & Santana few more times over the years; grateful..
Loved Terry Kath's brilliant guitar work, since CTA's first album in 1969 ! Huge thanks for posting this gig & for keeping his memory & that of CTA alive ! Even Jimi Hendrix lauded Terry Kath's great guitar work ! That in itself is a feather in his many feathered 'headdress' !

Terry Kath is, was and will be the greatest guitarist to date, and I loved Eddie and love Eric. But Terry played rhythm and lead while singing and blistering solos no one can touch while touring schedule that I think broke him. He was unhappy with new Chicago. His band had left the stage. Terry deserves to be recognized as one of the greatest guitarists of all time.
I think their Tanglewood concert in 1970 was their best. More passion and more in tune. This was a tired, older road band.

His physical appearance and him using lots of drugs when he died doesn’t add up. But to me he still looks good here and voice is even more soulful.
He was a functioning addict I've been there I know it can be done. Drugs especially powders are death 😪

Every single one of them were at the top of their game and showed what talented, gifted musicians they are/were(RIP Terry & Laudir)! Terry Kath was a great loss. But on this gig he was alive and well. Peter Cetera was really showing his incredible vocals. I have to say that this set shows him less focused on his bass playing. It is good. But not what he was doing just 10 years earlier. Thank you for this great video show Terry while he was still living and performing. This was a great great band. When they began they were ahead of their time.
I remember recording this off of AM radio to my cassette recorder. I wore that song out!! Chicago is forever in my heart. Love you Terry. Gone too soon. He's a legend!! 💞💞💞

I was there also my first concert 16 years old ! The Hanna family took me to this show and Niel Diamond with Cat Stevens opening for another concert so much fun... Today I play guitar and build them because of this influence I made my own tele and its got a black hawk Indian sticker on it right now not cause I love Hockey because of Terry. R.I.P. Terry

Poor Terry, you could see he was a physical mess by this point. I saw one of their last shows and I didn't even recognize him but he played great as always. RIP

Terry looks like he's just going thru the motions, bored with it all. while Peter reminds me of a wedding singer with that outfit. He's loving all the notoriety. it all makes sense now that we know what happened in the future.. Through it all TK still sounds great and plays that guitar flawlessly
What a great musician with a soulful voice of that of Ray Charles. Hendrix was quoted as saying Terry Kath was a better guitarist than him. Sadly this was only three months before his untimely death.
What could have been. RIP, Terry, you live on...
