Filming myself is daunting without helpful tools. I’ve experience the time sucking process you described. On a recent music video I was filming for myself I realized I can benefit from a wireless transmitter. This later half of this video is a reminder that “gear” are tools. When we as creators focus on the coolness of the gear, we forgot or lose sight of the practicality of the gear. Often it’s better to avoid buying a lot of gear at once so that we can validate the tools we need through experience on sets.

The process of using what you have to try and create what you need to create, falling short, learning about what you need next time and acquiring the tools to do it, is an invaluable experience and one that I feel is necessary to understand how to achieve the thing you're setting out to create. Everything is just a tool!
Thanks Rob you just encourage me to refresh my YT channel and maybe start doing my own tutorials and stuff, this will improve my overall cinematography skills(what is the most important for me) and maybe, just maybe earn some extra money in the future.

Since I've started UA-cam I've realised that filming yourself is probably the hardest thing in filmmaking. I thought it would be maybe twice as hard but it's easily 10x harder than filming someone else. I feel your pain in this video. Great tips and I'm definitely going to try to implement some of them out. Thanks for the video.

I can relate so much to all that going back and forth from camera to sitting and back. This channel is underrated. I'm learning so much. I remember that I once asked you how did you film yourself and you said you used the wireless monitor to not go back and forth to the camera all the time. Honestly, I didn't think about that - nor the focus puller - before, and although I don't make films, I think this video is really helpful for anyone on this field, and your channel as a whole is awesome too

I adore this channel. There are tons of channels out there that talk about LOG profiles, colour science, etc, etc, but they never seem to actually make anything or ever have practical examples. This is actually imparting knowledge to us. Brilliant.

The way you do your tutorials is so nice. A lot of people claim to offer "real world" examples, but they don't really seem to. Or they do but don't really explain how, or more importantly why, they made the decisions they did. The problem being that if one is not in the exact situation they were in then their setup doesn't really help much. But you structure your tutorials in a way that I feel they can be applied to a wide variety of scenarios. And as you yourself pointed out, I never feel like I have to have a certain brand or model of light to achieve similar results. I'm sure these videos take a lot of time to create but I hope you really feel that it's worthwhile and appreciate how much you've helped other people not only better understand lighting, but also realize that they probably have the means to achieve it as well.

Found this gem in my "watch later" playlist that I am FINALLY going through 😅 Man the filming yourself part is painfully true. I often have my external monitor to check framing and focus but then I can't see shit because the light is blinding and the peaking is inaccurate haha.

Hey man, I just want you to know that I consider you a cut above most "cinematography" youtubers. Out of all the channels ive watched, your videos were the only ones that actually motivated and inspired me to make and shoot stuff. Practicing lighting and studying film scenes is a skill that is so much more valuable to me than equipment reviews where the person talking just try to sell you stuff, with titles like - "YOU ABSOLUTELY NEED THIS AS A FILMMAKER!!!" The one video that really made me get off my ass and start shooting rather than window shopping was the one about fill lighting. You used some nikkon camera that can only shoot compressed h264 video, and the final images were practically identical to your other works. Thank you for not making it all about gear, and for making filmmaking feel accessible.

I know this is irrelevant to your excellent tutorials, but I enjoy watching you use older cameras such as bmcc to achieve such great results. Goes to show that proper lighting is such a majority of the puzzle, much more than having the latest and greatest camera with the biggest sensor. As a user of the original bmpcc, it is inspiring and motivating for me to really start working on my lighting techniques.

if you use a panasonic camera you have an app , you can control your whole camera with it , aputure , iso , focus.. everything. if you shoot indors and your camera has no flip out screen you can yous a pc screen using a hdmi cable to connnect with your camera. anyone has such a screen and it does not cost you extra money this way. i use a 27 inch screen and it hellps a lot with self filming

12:00 This is sometimes the advantage of having a cheaper camera brand, I think most of us here have a Sony A7 of some sort or similar, and more than often these cameras include a wireless smartphone monitoring and sometimes even focus 😊 Your videos are incredible, very well made, very educative, your lighting skills is incredible, a big source of inspiration and thank you for making this video in particular 🙏✨
For sure, I would love to have both of those things built into the camera, it would be beautifully simple haha! But for me I'm very picky about the image itself and the formats I can record in, so tooling up is the only option - thankfully these tools are a lot cheaper and more accessible than they were a few years back! I use the DJI RS3 Pro. If I attach that to a tripod I can wirelessly adjust my composition as well as focus! Pretty useful feature! The RS3 Pro is plenty big enough to hold my big cinema rig!
It's so awesome we have these tools that we wouldn't have had just a few years ago, freeing things up and allowing us more control over solo work or work in smaller teams. The RS3 Pro sounds like a great gimbal all round!

When it comes to doing this full time you just need to be careful you're not giving too much away for too little, because there are absolutely a lot of content creators who will be taken advantage of by companies to get some free advertising. It's all a balance!

Found this gem in my "watch later" playlist that I am FINALLY going through 😅 Man the filming yourself part is painfully true. I often have my external monitor to check framing and focus but then I can't see shit because the light is blinding and the peaking is inaccurate haha.

Hey man, I just want you to know that I consider you a cut above most "cinematography" youtubers. Out of all the channels ive watched, your videos were the only ones that actually motivated and inspired me to make and shoot stuff. Practicing lighting and studying film scenes is a skill that is so much more valuable to me than equipment reviews where the person talking just try to sell you stuff, with titles like - "YOU ABSOLUTELY NEED THIS AS A FILMMAKER!!!" The one video that really made me get off my ass and start shooting rather than window shopping was the one about fill lighting. You used some nikkon camera that can only shoot compressed h264 video, and the final images were practically identical to your other works. Thank you for not making it all about gear, and for making filmmaking feel accessible.

Haha those videos gets clicks and those clicks make money so I totally understand it - but it does get frustrating when you've binged 8 videos and you don't come away feeling like you've learned anything, so I'm just trying to fill that gap and make what I want to see, if that makes sense! I'm so happy I've been able to make filmmaking feel accessible for you, as that's what I'm constantly striving to do for myself and if that carries over to others then that's fantastic :)

I find it's okay to stray slightly from lighting sometimes if it's still under the umbrella of filmmaking/image making - I mean, this video so far is seemingly more popular than most of my last year's videos, so that's a good example haha - but yeah, I really enjoy lighting and the part it plays in making an image look and feel a certain way. I know this is irrelevant to your excellent tutorials, but I enjoy watching you use older cameras such as bmcc to achieve such great results. Goes to show that proper lighting is such a majority of the puzzle, much more than having the latest and greatest camera with the biggest sensor. As a user of the original bmpcc, it is inspiring and motivating for me to really start working on my lighting techniques.

if you use a panasonic camera you have an app , you can control your whole camera with it , aputure , iso , focus.. everything. if you shoot indors and your camera has no flip out screen you can yous a pc screen using a hdmi cable to connnect with your camera. anyone has such a screen and it does not cost you extra money this way. i use a 27 inch screen and it hellps a lot with self filming

12:00 This is sometimes the advantage of having a cheaper camera brand, I think most of us here have a Sony A7 of some sort or similar, and more than often these cameras include a wireless smartphone monitoring and sometimes even focus 😊

For sure, I would love to have both of those things built into the camera, it would be beautifully simple haha! But for me I'm very picky about the image itself and the formats I can record in, so tooling up is the only option - thankfully these tools are a lot cheaper and more accessible than they were a few years back!

I use the DJI RS3 Pro. If I attach that to a tripod I can wirelessly adjust my composition as well as focus! Pretty useful feature! The RS3 Pro is plenty big enough to hold my big cinema rig!
It's so awesome we have these tools that we wouldn't have had just a few years ago, freeing things up and allowing us more control over solo work or work in smaller teams. The RS3 Pro sounds like a great gimbal all round!

I feel like even when companies send you free products, it’s like you’re making money, as that is money you don’t have to spend on products you might have needed. I have been sent $1200 worth of filmmaking equipment for my channel so I can review it. It’s pretty awesome working with companies I looked up to as I was beginning my filmmaking journey.
Thanks Weston! Absolutely, if you're growing your channel or it's a product that benefits you and is saving you money in the long run, it can be a good move! When it comes to doing this full time you just need to be careful you're not giving too much away for too little, because there are absolutely a lot of content creators who will be taken advantage of by companies to get some free advertising. It's all a balance!
