    Berlioz wrote in his memoirs about playing this in Budapest. The Hungarian audience was astonished and made him perform it again.

    This may well be a Hungarian March but the orchestration is pure Berlioz - brilliant! and well paced (as expected) by Karajan.

    A few days ago listened this from Luisi at a MET performance. Yesterday from Rattle at a LSO performance. Then I said to myself: This piece used to have more guts. Then I remembered from whom I've heard it first

    @francaisetproud Berlioz was working on his "La damnation de Faust" and already had an Eastern European tour on the books for the work. His friends and critics suggested that he add a march with a Hungarian theme to please the Hungarian audiences. He did and it was a big success. The melody is Hungarian and has been used by other Hungarian composers such as Franz Liszt. It is a true Hungarian March within a large work by a French composer.

    Celibidache dizia que Karajan regia como se estivesse "batendo maionese". Isso fica evidente aqui. Mas não há como negar: é uma maionese muito gostosa.

    It's too fast, almost fast-forwarded, and as such slightly ridiculous. Other versions are somewhat too slow or lacking intensity. It's difficult to get it right.

  • @inSaxony
    @inSaxony 3 роки тому +2

    Way. Too. Fast. But maybe HvK was thinking about it in the same sense as Korngold, who when confronted by a Feldmarschall as he was rehearsing a new march with the words "but Korngold, what are you doing? That's much too fast for a march!" - replied: "Your Excellency, it's for the retreat." (Euer Exzellenz, es ist für den Rückzug.")

      Karajan's tempi were seldom faster, and quite often slower, than those of his contemporaries.

    maybe Karajan was a genius ...... but he did not have the necessary feeling for the expressiveness of the music. He has conducted many pieces, especially Beethoven symphonies, like someone who urgently needs to go to the toilet !!! Sorry, there were and still are conductors today who really deserve this title

    • @erikthenorviking8251
      @erikthenorviking8251 6 років тому +2

      Frodo, try Igor Markevitch's recording, also on YT; I think you may prefer it, as it's a little slower, but has much more tension. His complete recording is very highly regarded.
      I often think that vK WAS a genius, but he might have played a massive part in, say, finding a cure for cancer. As for other conductors, Karl Bohm is sadly under-rated (although not by me !); his Beethoven, Mozart and Schubert were far more stylish. Also, of his era, Krips, Jochum, Wand, and several others.
      However, he did an EXCELLENT Meistersingern from Bayreuth in the 50s, if you like Wagner.
