Wow, I honestly believe your the first on youtube with an actual Ryzen related product review, very nicely done sir, I greatly look forward to watching your Ryzen cpu review on this board, oh and make it one of your trademark long ones please. Alos as a side note I always thought the Formula Z series boards from ASUS were the highest spec AMD boards?
Clearly AMD Ryzen RAM speed support need to be clarified. On Asus website, this Crosshair Hero VI is stated as 3200Mhz DDR4 speed, where on your box it's stated 2667MHz
If you look at some Intel boards then you will see that there are 2 types of Memory clocks. One is regular and then there are OC clocks. So, 3200 Mhz is the OC mode that you get either manually overclocking or enabling the XMP profile. Either way I would not waste money on super fast memory as it makes no difference in gaming. I would rather invest in better GPU, CPU or even NVMe drive.
Great review, and nice to see someone, in the tech industry anyway genuinely excited about the AMD release... there are also plenty of reviews on this board that are still up :)
Nice early scoop, Tom, thanks. I'm excited for Ryzen but keeping expectations in check until I see third party overclocking results and direct gaming performance comparisons with the 6700k and 7700k.
the evo should be fine to cool a 95tdp cpu......not overclocked ofc ..its rated 150-180w tdp....amd wrath coolers have a 140tdp rating... www.pcper.com/files/imagecache/article_max_width/news/2017-02-22/AMD%20Ryzen%20Cooling%20Solutions.jpg
Coltc8 Well I'll bait for wenchmarks as they say since all this is speculative right now. Surely there will be many reviews on air cooling. I'm curious on how the Evo stacks up against Cryorig and Noctua's new am4 coolers.
Hey Tom, your the 1st I`ve seen show/mention the twin am4/am3 hole mounts. As for NDA review packs sent out are allowed to show M/board, ryzen chips and even full build. - BUT NOT allowed to show any benchmarks yet, although deep international researching and you can find a few out there he he. great review as always fella..
Well done! Thank you for the nice review. I can't wait and see what would be the performance with Ryzen CPU installed on that motherboard! BTW - noticed that Ryzen supports only 24 lane so with Cross Fire or SLI it will support only 8x/8x PCI express (not 16x/16x). Wonder if the plan to compensate this somehow...
Thank you so much for this video, specifically the part about the bracket (AM3) because I ALMOST scrapped my X62 Kraken fora custom loop because I didn't want to wait the 3 weeks for a new bracket considering the 1800X I pre ordered doesn't have a cooler. I was also very torn on what board, that that made my decision.
Honestly the wifi functionality can be easily achieved. The Wifi Go module with antenna only costs about 40 dollars in China, and with a aftermarket backplate I can upgrade this board to a higher end version if I wanted. Hopefully ASUS would bring more higher-end AM4 boards in the future adding more features like 2 internal USB2.0 and another USB3.0 connectors, better PCB strength for beefy air cooler, or even add another M.2 slot maybe?
I really hope that ASUS are going to bring an mITX board to the table that has a decent enough power delivery to overclock the R7 line-up. Imagine all that power in such a small build!
That AM3 holes in motherboard is for the a series processors. Looked from somewhere else that the ryzen cpu´s are higher/thigher so it might not work with am3 desing cooler mounts.
I am supposed to get my hands on one of these in a day or two. Part of a promotion AMD is doing with a company I used to work for. I got called in since I was the resident OC/water cooling guy when I worked there.
Looks like Ryzen do not support x16/x4@3.0 configuration (graphics card at x16@3.0 and pci-e ssd at x4@3.0). If u put your NVMe ssd in second pcie 3.0 slot, your graphics card will be gimped to x8 speed. If u put your NVMe ssd in lowest x16 (x4 electrical) 2.0 slot u will gimp not only speed of your drive but also add alot more latency since thoose lines are connected to chipset.
Bartosz Maj I'm sure other boards have shared the dedicated PCIe 3.0 x4 lanes for the M.2 with a physical x16 slot. So that config is still possible just not with this board.
Thanks for the answer man. One more question. If kaby lake z270 and ryzen x370/b350 have the same pci-e lanes then why do the z270 boards tend to have 2 m.2 slots lately, some even have 3 (MSI Z270 gaming M7, MSI Z270 xpower gaming titanium). I don't get that, is there any difference there?
Awesome nice one Tom.. Either this or the MSI X370 XPOWER GAMING TITANIUM ill be going for.. So exited Waited a bloody year to build my new pc whoop whoop lol.
this is one of the reasons I'm a amd fan only I can use my fx 8350 with this motherboard amd rocks, I was a intel fan until 2000 from 2000 I only buy over 100 gaming rigs in have build amd ,asus .thank you for the info
Have this board on preorder. Was told and also read that it would support up to 3200mhz for RAM.. I just bought Corsair 3000mhz vengeance hope it works
The return of CPU pins is a big mistake. How many AMD CPU's have you ripped out (lever arm down) because of the large surface area combined with the thermal paste? It's a nightmare that I thought we were done with.
That socket can easily be RMA'd. Besides we aren't just talking about ASRock sockets :P The pins of this type have always added danger and caution to a build. Hope you have a firm credit card handy. When a CPU and heat sink have been basically fused together, it's almost like glue and you can't do anything except rip it the fuck out and hope that you don't strip/bend/break the pins in the process. That or that awful twist and strain that you do to hope it pops off. It's an avoidable mess. AMD dropped the ball here.
FREQQLES or you just run the PC for a while, turn it off and quickly change the cooler while the thermal paste is still sort of warm..just don't be an idiot.
they have pins on the cpu cause intel doesnt if they both have pins on the same thing whats stopping some idiot for interchanging an intel cpu in an amd board or the other way around its actually quite smart to have it on the cpu just dont be an idiot putting it together and taking it apart
odd this just showed up in my sub box today. That rear I/O doe...so amazing how much more connectivity you get when you remove pointless display connectivity no one uses because of having a real GPU rather than crap iGPU from Intel or APU from AMD!
Bit dissapointed with the RAM speed support on the back of the box. Most other review sites have been shipped their review sample Ryzen with Corsair Vengeance 3000Mhz. I read somewhere else it supports up to 3200Mhz. Really impressed with the AM3 cooler support tho!!!
I was planning to buy this board, but DDR4 2666? what about my DDR4 3200 ? Gigabyte is offering that .. what does this mean for a high end motherboard from Asus?
DDR4 officially goes up to 2667Mhz. The package of my Z170 Asus board says the same, but on the manual it says that it supports overclocking up to 3600 or so Mhz. Sometimes you have to change it manually during setup, but mine set itself to 3200Mhz. It's no big deal
The real reason for cooler mounting changes have been stated that the actual AM4 cpu package is slightly higher than the old cpus... It certainly looks like AM3 coolers are supported but i dont know how that could be the case if these reports are true...
Can't believe that you did not even mention the presence of an LN2 switch at the bottom ::) You finger hovered over it and the boot buttons, but you never talked about it.
from what i read the vrm/power distribution is more complicated than intel version if i understood it right.plus this is a new platform guys... with the z270 users didnt even need to switch from z170 for kabylakes,so they needed to be more agressive priced.
I'm going to wait and see reviews from UA-camrs, and for ASUS to release the FORMULA or CODE version of this motherboard until I upgrade to the AMD 7 1800x from my new Intel i7 7700k and ASUS Code board.
I'm currently having issues booting into the bios even with beta 5704 bios. I was however able to boot into windows by disconnecting the keyboard only with the beta bios as it detected no keyboard and decided to boot. This is really strange. For those of you that may ask how i flashed the bios without going into it, I used Bios flashback from "Bios usb port". Anyone else have this issue? I'm using the Logitech G510s keyboard.
Tom strange question regards Ryzens USB controllers. I'm on a 4790k and Intel Gen 8 USB has only 96 endpoints and I believe later Intel series are the same. This causes me havoc running a lot of usb devices if XHCI is left on as I run a lot of sim gear for flying and racing. Its a constant battle with usb resource limitations. Do you know how many endpoints Ryzen can handle. Its the main thing for me in upgrading. Cheers.
This is actually a little disappointing in that I was rather hoping that with 24 x PCIe 3.0 lanes we could have a situation where I could have a 16x GPU and my 8 x PCIe NVMe card without dropping the GPU down to 8x :( - also only one m.2 PCIe slot, the second's SATA only - shame. There'll be better boards I'm sure.
So, if I have two GPUs and an Intel 750 PCI-E add-on card, the only way I can make sure that 750 works are by installing it in a PCI-E 2.0 X4 slot that's connected to the x370 motherboard?
i don`t know why the ram speed is limited in this asus mobo and what i sow after the presentation AMD given 3000mhz of 16 gb corsair kit with the CPU to the people who were invited.. gigabyte mobo support higher ram speed than this one. but i think the asrock fetalty has better package of all.
Redshiftit It was like 400 euros here in Finland when the first gen released.(about 500 American dollars) Though got one today for 220 euros. Saved like 100 because of the am3 holes :P
Why not use the X370 naming instead of Intel Z270 Chipset on an AMD Ryzen video? I understand it's the sponsorship spotlight. But, it confused the hell out of me why an Intel chipset was displayed for an ROG board that wasn't Intel.
Also, you're scared of the MDA rules yet, we can just go to each manufacturer's page and view the information ourselves and see pictures. You'll be fine I'm sure. If they had an MDA ruling, they shouldn't have released information about the boards. Hell. They already have downloads for the drivers!
Damn. I just wanted to buy an i7-7700K. Now with those leaked benchmarks that Ryzen gets more and more interesting. I'm looking at the Ryzen 7 1700X in particular. 440 €. 100 more than I planned to spend on a 7700K. I would have to sell my Sabertooth Z170 as well... I don't know what to do... : (
if Asus or AMD try to take this down it would be like kicking themselves in the arse, NDA or not im looking into upgrading my grandpa 3930k rig with a new system and rysen looks to be the mutts nutts... cant wait to see the testing and thoughts on if its worth it
"You can go 2 way SLI but you don't want to dirty your PC up" LoL
Wow, I honestly believe your the first on youtube with an actual Ryzen related product review, very nicely done sir, I greatly look forward to watching your Ryzen cpu review on this board, oh and make it one of your trademark long ones please. Alos as a side note I always thought the Formula Z series boards from ASUS were the highest spec AMD boards?
Jason Williams go to foreign youtube channels i jist saw a review for the 7700k vs 1700x/1700 for gta V
larrysmithfilms link it bud.
Jason Williams uh, this is a preview...
Der Herr And, your point is?
now it's time for "ryzen inside"
Or "ryzen within" :)
Clearly AMD Ryzen RAM speed support need to be clarified. On Asus website, this Crosshair Hero VI is stated as 3200Mhz DDR4 speed, where on your box it's stated 2667MHz
MarcParis ikr I really want to get 3000mhz ram but will it work or will it DC to 2666
Official DDR4 speed currently supported is 2667 MHz. Motherboards can "support" overclock. It will most likely then be able to OC to at least 3200 MHz
I was hoping to see people run APUs at the 3200+ speeds and see how it affects performance but apperently its not gonna happen ;-;
So my question will be simple : do my corsair vengeance LPX 2x8go 3200MHz will be able to use their XMP profile on this ROG board?
i'm kinda sad/dissapointed that there is still a CD instead of a USB thumbdrive for the drivers.
Always get the latest drivers from the manufacturers website.
Driver CD's make a great drink coaster for your beer when you are building it.
FeuerToifel lol the CD is a small small fraction of a USB price...
Just include basic ethernet driver on the disk and a link to the website driver download page. :)
Drivers CD/USB's get outdated really fast, it's always better to download the latest versions.
FeuerToifel never used the cd, I allways download the latest drivers.
Great review, and nice to see someone, in the tech industry anyway genuinely excited about the AMD release... there are also plenty of reviews on this board that are still up :)
Ryzen is causing a lot of excitement in the community indeed! Thanks for the great vid Tom.
AMD LETS MAKE SOME NOOOISSSEEE!!!
Nice early scoop, Tom, thanks.
I'm excited for Ryzen but keeping expectations in check until I see third party overclocking results and direct gaming performance comparisons with the 6700k and 7700k.
am3 cooler support. Thanks asus I can continue to use my old evo 212
*Cryorig H7 :)
The screws will fit, but do you think the cooler will line up and completely cover the CPU ?
The 212 evo can keep my fx8320 (tdp 125w) at 40°c max when I am gaming, why are you calling it a "weak sauce".
the evo should be fine to cool a 95tdp cpu......not overclocked ofc ..its rated 150-180w tdp....amd wrath coolers have a 140tdp rating... www.pcper.com/files/imagecache/article_max_width/news/2017-02-22/AMD%20Ryzen%20Cooling%20Solutions.jpg

Best review of this mobo I have seen so far, being that I am running the Cross Formula Z 990FX I think this is a winner for when I upgrade to AM4
This is a preview ;) Youll need a comfy chair for the full review!
As always Tom, top notch review.
Thanks TTL I think this will end up my board of choice, It will be a nice upgrade from my 2600k.
Thanks for this AM3 cooler compatibility! Very useful!!!
Nice video, look forward to new Ryzen updates from you.
I love how the Ryzen socket looks.
That is one good looking board :) I have always used Intel but I seriously hope Ryzen can live up to the hype when it comes to price/performance.
AMD has had PCIe 3.0 for years. It's been on the FM2+ platform for the A Series APUs.
Holy shit!!! i need them usb ports in my life, there is never enough on the board these days
Buy a USB3 Hub
asus have added this vid on FB, think you're safe tom :)
Got 2 lol still not enough for me
Great info on this board Tom! this is the board I plan to go with!
Well done! Thank you for the nice review.
I can't wait and see what would be the performance with Ryzen CPU installed on that motherboard!

"...and if you can't hear the excitement in my voice.....then look at my pants instead!!" : P
what's with the "Intel inside" at the start?
What does it matter? AMD hasn't released a new cpu for this segment in ages.
Asus hasnt sent a new one.....
nice copy and paste.
OC3D TV it's just an opinion but I would probably skip the intro. Good video. I've Pre-Ordered the motherboard in 22nd along with 1800x.
Same here :P
2 vids in 2 days! you're spoiling us dude
Nice review Tom
I really hope that ASUS are going to bring an mITX board to the table that has a decent enough power delivery to overclock the R7 line-up. Imagine all that power in such a small build!
That Ending.. YOU ARE SUCH A TEASE !!!!!!
Yes can't wait to get this board thx for the AM3 hint
This is the board I'll be getting. Its so much prettier in person. :)
That AM3 holes in motherboard is for the a series processors. Looked from somewhere else that the ryzen cpu´s are higher/thigher so it might not work with am3 desing cooler mounts.
IMO this and the Gigabyte K7 are the best looking X370 boards so far.
That Peugeot taxi gave me memories. But pretty mad board.
So excited for Ryzen!!! Can't wait... *_*
I am supposed to get my hands on one of these in a day or two. Part of a promotion AMD is doing with a company I used to work for. I got called in since I was the resident OC/water cooling guy when I worked there.

Bartosz Maj Then just buy an M.2 NVMe drive and put it in the M.2 slot. Done.
Bartosz Maj I'm sure other boards have shared the dedicated PCIe 3.0 x4 lanes for the M.2 with a physical x16 slot. So that config is still possible just not with this board.
Is this true?? Will my ssd not run at full speeds then if I buy ryzen+am4 motherboard?? I need answers here...
Nessie Jr It will run at full PCIe 3.0 x4 if used in the M.2 slot. The M.2 on AM4 has its own dedicated x4 lanes direct to the CPU.
Logan you did it!! You finnaly reduce the video time!!
Its a preview not a full review
OC3D TV doesnt matter.I have seen longer
I cant wait to upgrade to Ryzen this Spring! :D
Awesome nice one Tom.. Either this or the MSI X370 XPOWER GAMING TITANIUM ill be going for.. So exited Waited a bloody year to build my new pc whoop whoop lol.
0:08 Intel Z270 Chipset Inside... fascinating.
What does it matter? AMD hasn't released a new cpu for this segment in ages.
It's AMD's X370 Chipset. I was just mocking the intro.
well we have lost the realtek lan and have a intel lan so there is a intel inside hehe
this is one of the reasons I'm a amd fan only I can use my fx 8350 with this motherboard amd rocks, I was a intel fan until 2000 from 2000 I only buy over 100 gaming rigs in have build amd ,asus .thank you for the info
you can NOT use you 8350 with this board. It supports AM3 coolers but the socket is AM4 and is not backwards compatible with older CPU's
Oh I thought it said that it works with old cpu I'm ok thank you
cant wait for a crosshair VI impact!
Besides we aren't just talking about ASRock sockets :P
The pins of this type have always added danger and caution to a build. Hope you have a firm credit card handy.

FREQQLES or you just run the PC for a while, turn it off and quickly change the cooler while the thermal paste is still sort of warm..just don't be an idiot.
NO!! PGA is better, the end, get a proper Thermal paste, if the cooler and CPU are hard to separate, its a bad TIM.
they have pins on the cpu cause intel doesnt if they both have pins on the same thing whats stopping some idiot for interchanging an intel cpu in an amd board or the other way around its actually quite smart to have it on the cpu just dont be an idiot putting it together and taking it apart
HAHA that's not the reason why they have pins :))))))))))
yayyy keep us updated
Excellent, all those lovely VRM's and chokes, now I can overclock my 1800x to 4.1 on some of the cores. lol
Finally, something besides an Intel review! (not that its your fault TTL)
Its hard work doing the actual CPU testing in such a short time, refreshing where its all new though
Thanks for your hard work bringing this new content to the table. I'm sure some all-nighters are in store for you!
odd this just showed up in my sub box today.
Id take it with a pinch of salt till reviews are out tbf
I love you TTL, such a rebel
I was planning to buy this board, but DDR4 2666? what about my DDR4 3200 ? Gigabyte is offering that .. what does this mean for a high end motherboard from Asus?
Jasx If your on Windows 10 it won't matter anyway. It won't use 3200 frequency.
It means wait for a review before buying. Someone will test it and you'll find out on google.
ASUS site says 3200mhz (OC)
Jasx natively supports 2666 for the cpu OC those through AMP profile 3200mhz
DDR4 officially goes up to 2667Mhz. The package of my Z170 Asus board says the same, but on the manual it says that it supports overclocking up to 3600 or so Mhz. Sometimes you have to change it manually during setup, but mine set itself to 3200Mhz. It's no big deal

Can't believe that you did not even mention the presence of an LN2 switch at the bottom ::)
You finger hovered over it and the boot buttons, but you never talked about it.
Things look promising
This board is $40 more expensive than its Z270 clone. I call BS!
$100 cheaper here
Tobi Ogunsanwo 85$ cheaper at my shop
Wat..
from what i read the vrm/power distribution is more complicated than intel version if i understood it right.plus this is a new platform guys... with the z270 users didnt even need to switch from z170 for kabylakes,so they needed to be more agressive priced.
+Finlay Massie where? Any source?
EK making any Monoblock for the ASUS line-up
That's weird, it says its 3200mhz RAM support on the Australian retailers websites
very good job love that bord
AMD's FM2(+) boards have had PCIe 3 for a long time. But yeah, AM3+ hasn't.
I'm going to wait and see reviews from UA-camrs, and for ASUS to release the FORMULA or CODE version of this motherboard until I upgrade to the AMD 7 1800x from my new Intel i7 7700k and ASUS Code board.
Still can't decide wether to get the 8 or 6 core. Probably 6 core is more than enough for my needs. I´m still on a Phenom II X4.
SWEET!!!
I wonder.
EK stated that all their am3 coolers will support am4, how can they when the holes in their clu-blocks aren't alignet with the new width?
thanks!
Holy shit, the amount of USB Ports
i'm sold already bought
Newegg will have these in stock on the 9th, a week after I wanted to buy. Newegg, why
crossing my fingers that the motherboard/bios drivers for the am4 platform dont ruin this for amd
With the AM3 cutouts would that mean a Kraken X62 would mount *without* a new adapter on a Ryzen CPU?
supposed to have stickers under box inserts
I'm currently having issues booting into the bios even with beta 5704 bios. I was however able to boot into windows by disconnecting the keyboard only with the beta bios as it detected no keyboard and decided to boot. This is really strange. hype?
love it
This is actually a little disappointing in that I was rather hoping that with 24 x PCIe 3.0 lanes we could have a situation where I could have a 16x GPU and my 8 x PCIe NVMe card without dropping the GPU down to 8x :( - also only one m.2 PCIe slot, the second's SATA only - shame. There'll be better boards I'm sure.
Why did they change the mounting???? now i just got an AIO for my 2600K last month so if the mother board is not dual mount i am Fed
So, if I have two GPUs and an Intel 750 PCI-E add-on card, the only way I can make sure that 750 works are by installing it in a PCI-E 2.0 X4 slot that's connected to the x370 motherboard?
Great!
i don`t know why the ram speed is limited in this asus mobo and what i sow after the presentation AMD given 3000mhz of 16 gb corsair kit with the CPU to the people who were invited..
gigabyte mobo support higher ram speed than this one. but i think the asrock fetalty has better package of all.
Holy fuck that's a lot of USB ports
are those mount screw holes only on the Crosshair VI Hero, or are they going to be the norm across all AM4?
Sooo sad that the ps2 port is dropped on their hero's... my 7g Steelseries wont be replaced ever!
I was going to get this for my build ($255 on Amazon) but my rip-off country, South Africa, it costs $402...
Redshiftit It was like 400 euros here in Finland when the first gen released.(about 500 American dollars)
Though got one today for 220 euros. Saved like 100 because of the am3 holes :P
Why not use the X370 naming instead of Intel Z270 Chipset on an AMD Ryzen video? I understand it's the sponsorship spotlight. But, it confused the hell out of me why an Intel chipset was displayed for an ROG board that wasn't Intel.

why the hell they are always putting the buttons on bottom of the board, not next to the ram where the post lcd display is......... WHYYYYYYYY
the am3 backplate is included??my xspc raystorm use the stock bracket.....
Only one m2 slot is not enough. Two m2's in raid either two 960 evo's or pro's is the only way to go.
traingp7 does this doard support NVME?
traingp7 more boards coming in the next months, dual m.2 support will probably be a thing sooner or later
No ding :( also this board will be used a lot for a week then all the overclockers will move to a better one once that comes out.
