This is a very interesting documentary about new developments within the Chinese economy and for anyone interested in the new role of China in the international sphere is certainly quite illuminating. China is no longer about making cheap stuff. And, more importantly, every year it passes it seems more likely that the Middle Kingdom will manage to overcome or to break (sorry, I am not a English native speaker) the middle income trap.
Several of the people interviewed in the documentary seemed quite articulate and made interesting observations. Certainly more interesting than most of the comments made here below the line.
But as quite often is the case with online commenting, everything is all about making some petty-minded and ridiculous observation about the most irrelevant aspect of the film. The funny thing is that these people pretend at the same time to be some sort of experts on the matter; in reality they only thing they manage to do is displaying not only their ignorance and but also, quite often, their lack of manners.
The film, as any other work made by humans, is certainly not perfect and can be criticized. It focus mainly on industrial design and advertisement but other creative industries are fully ignored, for example: book publishing. And cinema is given just few minutes at the end of the film.
But overall it's definitely worth watching. Thanks, for posting it.

Here's some feedback with some substance to it: China's views on what constitutes creativity is lacking because as a nation it lacks the conceptual framework & thinking style that is needed to actually be creative. That's why probably a lot of commenters are pointing out some of the things in this video that stand out as patently absurd. Your comment also reeks of the same rigidness that lies at the basis of this lack of creativity. I dare say you might be a party line toting online drone.
Do you want to know how i know? I'm from a culture that fosters critical thinking & anti-authoritarian behaviours. We are given the tools to question those giving out the tools, only than can you understand your position as a individual or a nation in the context of the world stage.
The fact that your comment oozes indignation illustrates the very point you are not getting: if you can not receive criticism as a nation than you can't EVER be creative. You can't copy creativity, you have to develop it. You can't do a top down party written plan. It simply doesn't work like that.
What you want is both total control & total creativity. These things are antithetical, you can't eat your cake and have it too. The fact that you do not understand these basic fundamental principles is why in the long run, China will fail to be anything other than an advanced Xerox machine.
And with regards to this bit: "The funny thing is that these people pretend at the same time to be some sort of experts on the matter; in reality they only thing they manage to do is displaying not only their ignorance and but also, quite often, their lack of manners."
My expertise on this subject is absolutely superior to 99,99999% of all Chinese people or you for that matter (PM for proof), pointing out lack of manners (which isn't the subject at all) is proof that commenters have struck a nerve. And that nerve is as visible as it has been for a while: you want a certain outcome without looking inward to see what you are doing wrong.
Stop comparing yourself to other people or brands.
Stop trying to control that which can't be controlled.
The whole movie as petty, infantile & ignorant about a field you truly don't understand. Start accepting that you might be going about it the wrong way.

@@BennySalto Wow!!! So much rubbish!!!! Is your expertise really superior??? Then, try to take 1 billion people out of poverty. Try to find another country that multiplied its GDP in such a short time, try to compare your "anti-authoritarian" culture with the Chinese culture, that has *the people* as its first priority. For your information, Confucianism focuses on benevolence and the benefit of the people, and it has been like this until the West took its firearms to attack China. Try to learn some history!!!
OK, so let me see how the Chinese copy: I would say that YOUR whole comment is petty, infantile & ignorant about a field (Asian history, culture, and business) you truly don't understand. YOU should start accepting that YOU are going about it the VERY wrong way.

Im a Malaysian Chinese. I would say one should go China and observe by self. I mean, before I went China, I thought China is a bit outdated, not that modern and less advance than my country. Then I got a chance to visit to (not even metropolitan city like Shanghai or Beijing), I was totally amazed. And when back to own country, I realized how much we are behind. Everything evolves seriously fast there. I have some respect to China now.

I enjoyed the Chinese perspective. It was all about success and money.
For some background, I am an IT solutions/sales consultant in Vancouver.
Bottom line from what I saw in that film, was a lack of customer empathy. I always do the best for my customer and build the trust. However, I would not do business that would hurt anyone. In fact, the West loves helping as we feel guilty.
So, bottom line from a Canadian point of view, the west does not trust China.
Why? bcs, Chinese businesses do not give back to the community.
That is where China will lose. GIVE BACK.. China acts like the West did in 1400-1900s. I can guide you to success.

It was a very well presented documentary, and I enjoyed watching it. However, this was presented pretty much as an advertisement rather than a documentary. It was a very one-sided presentation of Chinese innovation. Yet, take it for what it is, and enjoy it as a counter-balance to the western overly negative biased view on the development in China.

I see more technique and principles then vision here. Culture trumps method any day of the week if you ask me. Readiness to ship shouldn't be under-estimated either. But what else is China ready to ship aside from gizmo's made from imported Western technology assembled with cheap Chinese labor thanks to economies of scale? Managers? Or maybe like America, it will strive to export it's worldviews and attitudes first (not even what's particularly being done here though), In tandem with just the right amounts of sugar to make the medicine go down, or smoothen the more abrasive contact points (China wouldn't be short of this commodity of course). Along with some force where need be even? Not really an option so much we hope these days, so that the only thing it comes down to is buying and selling power. And perhaps getting untapped populations online in time to buy products, like stalled Asian Muslim populations of Pakistan, or even larger Indonesia maybe? In which case Pakistan's nuclear capabilities wouldn't hurt either surely to back up your assertions and expansions. Even though the major battles will most likely be fought in the media, for the so-called hearts and minds of the majority. Not hard to do when it comes to populations with such low demands, thanks to being deprived of jobs and thus a living all this while. Pakistan again is it, with Indonesia not far behind?

How China succeed the U.S. is in the speed of the workers. In the U.S. they hire 3 men to do one China man's work. American workers are very slow and very high salary demanding. For example, in the U.S. they will hire 1000 workers to build 100 Iphones, but in China, they only hire 100 workers to build 1000 Iphones. Therefore, every company will move to China for cheaper and faster labors. The only way U.S. can beat China is to replace all workers with robots and machine so they can work faster to compete with China.

The Chinese needs to speed up their learning of English! First rule of translation: People always work into their native language. E.g. you don't get native chinese person to translate into english. You get a native English person to translate from Chinese. The translation here is just aweful!

Bradley Arsenault Worst contradiction. If "You don't get native Chinese person to translate into english. You get a native English person to translate from Chinese." Bradley Arsenault First rule of the golden rule: don't be too subjective. Do you think countries around the world don't get native to do translation? Translation is AI-aided now. Translation isn't about English. People learn more than one language because they don't want to be...the frog in a well? You should spend more time learning mankind heritage.
