Hello Sir Hairless ! Nightwish fan here, your musical quest summoned me.
Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band! This live recording is from Wacken Open Air 2013, together with Floor Jansen [pronounced Yansen], the 3rd and present female singer of the band, and Marco Hietala, bassist and singer, in front of an 82K audience.
About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners.
Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory):
" Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland.
Tuomas Holopainen [pronounced Tuo-mas], the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [Sami Vanska was the bassist of the band starting with their 2nd studio album, he was with them until 2001. Then Marco Hietala was bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least. Then in May 2021 Jukka Koskinen [pronounced Yukka] became the bassist of the band, for the Human :II: Nature tour - and recently, the band announced he became a permanent member] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen [he also recorded the bass lines for their 1st studio album]. Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen [pronounced Yukka] is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition.
Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen [pronounced Tarr-ya] (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her.
There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps.
I want to welcome you to the Nightwish community. I hope you like them enough to continue the journey. Believe me Nightwish will surprise you with their songs. You will never know what to expect. They are unbelievable live. I want to warn you that Nightwish fans are hard core. So be prepared. lol "

Holy smokes! Please do more Nightwish because that was a fantastic reaction. I love reactors who are teachers, and I definitely learned something from you. You will find that Nightwish has a great deal of variety in their music, all the way from ballads, through music with a definite Celtic influence to hard and heavy straight up metal. Every song is different, and there isn't a bad song in the bunch. The keyboardist, Tuomas Holopainen is the lyricist and composer of the majority of their music and has often been called the "Metal Mozart." Floor is fantastic, of course, and the bassist, Marko Hietala, who is sadly no longer with the band, is a powerful singer. Their duets together are almost legendary. Indeed, this entire band is made up of extremely talented musicians who all play for the song. No egos here. Oh, and you mentioned the crowd interaction. That is common in rock/metal performances. The crowd gains energy from the music and the musicians, in turn, are energized by the involvement of the crowd. Thank you again for that great reaction.

As a retired music teacher, I do like reactions that are intelligent. So many reactors play the song through and finish off by saying something like: That was great! To me that's not a reaction. Even though I was a music teacher and amateur composer, I can always learn more. Great reaction. If you continue with Nightwish you will find every song different to all the others and, the fact that Floor has a variety of voices, every one of them brilliant.

I wish you could see the big smile I have on my face after watching your amazing and wonderfully accomplished introduction to the world of metal epicness created by Nightwish🤟 😄🤘Even though I’m not a hardcore follower as most of their mega-devoted fans, I do have a deep respect and admiration to their impressive craft. Besides, I love Floor (current) and Tarja (former): two elegant/gorgeous/talented front-queens of this legendary band formed by true master musicians. Marko Hietala was the bassist who sang in duet with Floor in this performance: he is indeed a great vocalist too and, if you want, you can check more of his vocal skills in the Nightwish’s tribute to Pink Floyd with their live performance of song ‘High Hopes’ (End of An Era DVD). The lovely Tuomas Holopainen (keyboard) is the main composer for both this band and a newer ‘softer/folk-ish’ band called Auri, where he also has a key role together with the multi-instrumentalist Troy Donockley (another super talented member of both these bands). Sir, I have a strong feeling that your exceptional musical expertise could also greatly contribute to a better understanding and dissemination of many high-quality metal music - fans of this genre usually love when newcomers discover their soft spot within the metal universe ;) I thank you (and the Patreon who requested the video) for this joyful reaction and amazing analysis!

I honestly would love it if you analysed Ghost love score from Nigthtwish *with London Symphonic orchestra, which play the classical instrument)
Floor and Troy are not Finnish, Floor is Dutch and Troy is Brit. Wacken is a huge festival where all metalheads from Europe gather, like Hellfest France and Graspop in Belgium.
Stabat matar dolorosa sung by Simone Epica (Dutch band and bff Floor) sings this beautiful hymn with Floor. Floor is a very high soprano, but her reach is out of this world. so she takes the alto part.
Floor studied opera and theatre, I think the Theatre singing teached her how to really tell a story. Metalheads can appreciate classical music and area's a lot and it's fun to see the metalheads enjoying that hymn.

Btw. WACKEN is a very small northern German village, whose surrounding fields are transformed into a "metal battlefield" for a few days once a year in August. (In fact, in a few years the festival site was transformed into a "swamp landscape" with a lot of "mud" due to massive rainfall. Metal heads accept this calmly and many people remember this event as an unforgettable experience. Over 80.000 metal fans now attend each year. Metal heads from all over the world who pay homage to their bands and at times form a choir of 80,000. Bands and crowds form an incredible symbiosis that creates a very unique atmosphere.

Please, please, PLEASE do more Nightwish reactions! The Nightwish Army will provide you with extensive info about what songs and which videos to use, and you'll definitely get to hear many different sounds you can break down. And if you happen to like symphonic metal, commenters will suggest other symphonic metal bands (Epica, Within Temptation, Kamelot, etc.) and/or generally interesting metal bands with a great variety of sounds to explore!
As to some of your questions (apologies in advance for the wall of text):
    - Yes, you'll see people clapping, headbanging, singing along with and sometimes even "dancing" during songs at any metal concert. And when I say "dancing", I mean generally moving, jumping, going with the flow and energy of the music and the crowd. Compared to traditional or classical music concerts, bands want crowds to engage with the music - encouraging to clap or sing along with parts of the songs is a tried and certified way to do that. Crowdsurfing is also part of that sometimes. You'll also sometimes see people running in circles (aka moshpits) or two sides of a crowd running towards each other on the signal of the singer (aka participating in a wall of death). You won't see the latter kind of movement much at Nightwish concerts specifically, but generally at many if not most metal concerts.
    - The dancing you see from Floor in this video is indeed a kind of headbanging, though it is a more "soft" and elegant way of doing it, which also fits with the general vibe of the song. If you react to more heavy songs by Nightwish or any other metal bands, you'll see the more classic headbanging. Also, having long hair is not a prerequisite for headbanging, although it makes for a more visible effect. 😉
    - The "rock hands" 🤘are generally called devil/metal horns. You'll see them at any metal concert, it's a pretty universal symbol used by metalheads.
    - The dirt/mud you see on some of the people comes from the festival grounds. Wacken is a small village in the middle of grasslands. For a few days a year, these grasslands are the playing grounds for over 80000 festival visitors - add to that rainy weather and you've got yourself a giant mud pit. I've read somewhere that the people from Wacken are working very hard on finding a more resistant variety of grass in order to reduce the probability of muddy festival grounds, with varying levels of success.
    - You'll see lots of flags at metal festivals. For many people, three days of quasi-nonstop metal concerts with a big variety of metal genres, popular and new bands is way more attractive than waiting/hoping for one singular band to come to your next biggest town. So you'll see people from all over the world travelling to Wacken.
    - About Emppu (guitarist) and Jukka (drummer) talking to each other: These guys have been in Nightwish since 1996, they've played hundreds of shows together, have been on tours for quite some time. I dare say they know each other very well and have ways to communicate with each other on stage even if they can't really hear each other. You won't see this with every band, but Nightwish has lots of small on stage interactions that show they enjoy their time on stage.

One of their newer numbers Shoemaker really showcases what Floor can do. It’s technically a very difficult song to sing but she manages it with ease.
About the audience here, this was recorded at The Wacken festival, an outdoor festival which lasts several days, so yes people can get mud on them. Last year was actually cancelled before it even really got on its way due to so much mud and inaccessible roads due to the mud.
You will see lots of South American recordings and fans because they are extremely popular in the entire South American continent. Those fans are on another level of festive audiences. They dance and sing and participate with the performances. I do believe that that’s why Nightwish used to tour there so often.

When you want to go further on the path of our 1.83m (6ft.+) tall Dutch Valkyrie Queen Floor Jansen besides Nightwish, here is some background information on the best and most versitale female singer of our time. Floor joined the band 'After Forever' in 1997 at the age of 16. Here are some of my favourites: ‘Energize me’; Monolith of Doubt’ and Dreamflight’.
Floor attended the then new Rock Academy in 1999 and graduated in 2003. She also studied 2 years at the Conservatory (1 year Music Theatre and 1 year Opera).
'After Forever' disbanded in 2009 and Floor started her own band 'Revamp' from scratch. Here she experimented with different vocal styles within one song from full operatic to death growls in seconds. Here are some examples: ‘Misery’s no Crime’, ‘Wild card’ and ‘Disdain’.
Besides managing a band on her own she also did a lot of vocal coaching and as she is a perfectionist, she wants to do everything at 100%+. Eventually she had to pay the price and got a burnout. She had just recovered when end of september 2012 the call came from Nightwish to fill in for the remainder of the North American Tour at first as their second singer Annette got ill. Floor had just 48 hours to learn the whole setlist. There is a documentary made of this world tour: ‘Please learn the setlist in 48 hours’
Floor joined Nightwish after this iconic Wacken concert in 2013 as permanent member of the band. Floor continued to perform with 'Revamp’ also, but it was clear that she could not combine the two for much longer, so 'Revamp' disbanded in 2016. Floor did a side project called 'Northward' where she dived into the Hard Rock scene. The song 'While Love Died is a must see.
Her stunning performances on the Dutch TV show 'Beste Zangers 2019' gave her at last some more recognition in her home country where she was relatively unknown until then. There are numerous guest appearances with other bands to find on UA-cam. To see how to get a crowd of metalheads silenced and in awe watch her featuring with the band 'Epica' and the song 'Stabat Mater Dolorosa’ and to see her in full opera mode, watch her rendition of 'O Mio Babbino Caro' from Puccini. As live concerts were cancelled and home isolation due to the Covid situation, Floor discovered UA-cam in these years. Mindblowing covers, chats with her idols and other singers, vocal masterclasses, personal insights and so much more. She even made a video reacting to herself singing Ghost Love Score at Wacken. Lots of technical info and some memories of her starting with Nightwish.
Also her Fan Friday videos are hilarious. Just unpack some of these and other presents she left on her channel. Also videos of her solotour she did with songs of her impressive career. Her latest endeavour is her stunning solo album ‘My Paragon. Floor is a high sensitive person, so peace and quiet is as important for her. Living by the woods in Sweden with her husband Hannes Van Dahl (drummer of the band Sabaton), daughters Freja (turned 7 years this march) and Lucy (born last october) ,a couple of horses, dogs and cats, she found this.

Oh and I’m sure you’re gonna drown in Nightwish-recommendations but I’d just like to throw She’s my sin into the mix, a song about the secret stuff we all have but don’t tell anyone - if you ask Toumas who writes most of the music, but if you ask me, who was a little romantic emo kid during that era of nightwish, I’d like to think it’s a song about his impossible love for their first singer (yes yes, I am aware that the nightwish army might bash me for this BUT let a girl live in her romantic fantasies, pls).

Floor did not say the song was a softer one, she said she would be starting softer. And then all hell breaks loose, so to say. I think she very deliberately tries to mislead every new listener to this song, for humorous effect.
She has said that this is a more difficult song to sing for her, mainly because it is at the edge of her range for the singing techniques used. Note that this concert is a brilliant live performance with 15 songs, all composed for two singers with totally different vocal abilities. Tuomas composes with the singers and instrumentalists in mind, so that she pulled it off in such a great fashion and was able to adapt the songs to her voice, adding even more depth to it if she could, always impresses me.
Songs like Ghost Love Score, the Poet and the Pendulum, the Greatest Show on Earth, and Shoemaker show more of her vocal abilities and agility. But never underestimate Marko. And remember, every song is different, and half way into a song you never know how it will end.

As a classical musician you will likely find this very interesting with the many different movements and developing melody lines that remind me of Beethoven's 6th pastoral symphony.
The Nightwish keyboardist/ composer Tuomas is a very special person who has written some amazing instrumental pieces. Most recently the long orchestral work in the last Nightwish Human::Nature album, which is called:
All the Works of Nature that Adorn the World.
    ua-cam.com/video/RnOdQ5WNZJk/v-deo.html
This video is 30+ min of beauty of Tuomas' gorgeous music in multiple parts, with a fan created video ending with Ad Astra.
It is absolutely beautiful visually and musically. It will really make you see the beauty of the world in which we live.
Tuomas created this music for Orchestra and choir vocals with some contributions from Troy's traditional instruments, and Floor. No lyrics, just music.
This fan made video is approved by Nightwish, and edited to perfection to match the musical mood in each part ( titled sections/movements) of the piece.
Nightwish did release their own video for the last part called Ad Astra which is also good to view.

Their live performances are an experience, a journey. Each one of it!
Floor is the most versatile female vocalist of all times. She can do it all - opera, belting, growling as well.
And Tuomas' compositions are just amazing.
Marco, the bass player, faced some issues with his voice, by the way. When he was younger, he had a botchered surgery at his vocal chords and hat to learn how to sing again. That makes his vocal power much more unique to me.

This is the first time I saw a reaction of you and I immedeately subscribe. What an educational reaction.
I'm an older fan and already was a fan of Nightwish and of Floors former band After Forever before Nightwish and Floor joint forces. Nightwish is perfect for Floors skills and Floor is the perfect addition to Tuomas's compositions (the keyboardist).
General Gabriel has already reacted and his list is a very good guide to discover Nightwish, the top of the bill of female-fronted symphonic metal.
Having seen this reaction, you have got me very curious about your reaction on Ghost Love Score (also Wacken 2013), with a more operatic and a more gritty Floor, but also your opinion on the time signatures in this song. It is a wonderful, but also complicated song.

In general, this particular concert is regarded as one their best ever, where performance, sound, mixing and effects were all on point, although there are plenty of other concerts of theirs that are excellent as well. In general they are regarded as a band that shines when performing live.

subbed for more Nightwish reaction analysis... your breakdown is fantastic... can't wait for more! Lots to love from a writing perspective. Tuomas, the keyboardist, composes most of the music and is considered by the fans to be the Metal Mozart. I think you'll find that's true as you dig deeper and deeper... Ghost Love Score from this same Wacken performance, Dead Boy's Poem live from Buenos Aires, Poet and the Pendulum live from Wembley, and Greatest Show on Earth from Tampere are all wonderful songs I think you would be blown away by, given your classical background...

Crowd participation (like clapping) is very much appreciated. It builds an energy of which the band can feed of.They will return the favor and give a higher energy back to the crowd as well. It is not without risk, because of changing time signatures and even more: the speed of sound dictates a crowd of 80.000 will ALWAYS be off-sync. This is not a problem to the band, because in their in-ear monitor there is a clicktrack playing that is their only truth.
Floor can sing like an angel (including full-opera) and seconds later be growling like a demon...extremely versatile...
One more important thing to know: _"It is called head banging, not hair banging"_ - Floor Jansen (as she had cut her hair shorter)

Well if you ask what makes it a softer one, Nightwish is generally considered quite soft in metal terms. Pretty low on the speed level, almost no harsh vocals, only one guitar.
So "harder" in Nightwish terms would be more guitar riff oriented, a bit faster, more "wall of sound" style. There are quite a few of those, too, a common example would be Romanticide from this same concert, or Song Of Myself for a more "heavy" style, especially at the end (lots of headbanging there).

The hands are "throwing up the horns", originated by Ronnie James Dio (check out Stargazer for one of Metal's greatest frontmen on full send)
Floor did say they were starting with a quiet one, and while this track builds toward the end, this remains a reasonably chill Nightwish "opener". Dark chest of wonders, Nemo, Ghost Love Story, Phantom of the Opera, or Greatest Show on Earth are prime examples of the band (and especially Floor) going Full Send.

One little thing I want to tell you about the "metal culture", when you refer to the clapping, rock hands, headbanging, crowdsurfing...
To many it seems a little intimidating, a bit scary. But while you can expect a certain behavior from the crowd as a whole, there is no expectation on any individual. If you want to go headbanging, crowdsurfing, singing along in your shower voice, dancing around with shirt off, enter a mosh pit, or just quitely watch and admire the show: anything goes. The crowd is united by a love for the music and everyone is out for a night of fun. If you are not a "metalhead" you are more than welcome to show up to a metal concert and enjoy the show in whatever way you like.

Floor has Bel Canto training as you could tell. But she knows how to use grit and growls too. The symphony aspect is usually pre-recorded a lot of the times. Nightwish I believe, has used the London Philharmonic to get their background symphony, but I'm sure true Army could tell you specifics. I like Nightwish, and I've listened to a lot of their older stuff, but nothing recent.

If you liked this I think you'll like Wintersun. "Sons of Winter and Stars (Live Rehearsal At Sonic Pump Studios)" is the obligatory starting point.
I'm not sure how many different instruments and sounds were used to make that song, but in the DAW file there's over 1600 tracks on the mix. It's pretty insane.
Also, the current bassist and drummer of Nightwish are also in Wintersun.
P.S. Fun fact to keep in mind if you do decide to check it out, the lead vocalist is missing about 1/4 of one of his lungs because he got tuberculosis while in the Finnish military and had to have part of his lung surgically removed.

Can't wait for you to check out "Ghost Love Score" for a serious symphonic song. This one is a big single from Nightwish. For much of the symphonic elements they do use backing tracks combined with the keyboards. Floor does have a very graceful and elegant stage style on some songs.
