This game is still in VERY VERY early stage, 100% not going to be in 2020, hard to say 2021, might even be 2022. This video is actually more of a "recuritment" advertise. They are currently hiring Senior UE4 graphic engineer expert, animation technology art and UE4 special effects designer etc. The studio also mentioned that this game will be launching on PC + all mainstream console paltforms, and cloud gaming platforms that can provide stable environment for this game. There is also a little tease from the main developers saying that not only they love single player, action based and story driven game, they also enjoy games that support online cooperation.
Always get bored and feel annoyed with chinese putting so much hype into wukong by making different version of wukong movies every chinese new year, but this game in terms of gameplay is awesome honestly.
for those who aren't familiar with Chinese literature and mythology, The monkey king Sun Wukong is a character in the Chinese novel Journey to the West written in the 16th century, depicting his journey along with his master, and 2 sworn brother's journey to the birthplace of buddhism to ask for the scripture. Goku from dragonball Z is loosely based on him. Even though Wukong is capable of getting to the destination in one single backflip, but his master insisted on traveling all the way to India on foot, through the long journey they went through trials and tribulation, Wukong eventually grew from a "Yao" (Chinese terminology, similar to "wild/ evil spirits or monster", but Yao is not always evil) to eventually attain Buddhahood with his master and sworn brothers who have their own amazing story. One of the brother Bajie was previously a Heavenly General, but got drunk in a Heavenly Palace banquet, and tried to get with the Goddess of the Moon, the Jade Emperor banished him to the mortal realm and was accidentally reincarnated into a pig sty, turning him into a pig man. Wukong is capable of transforming into any object, animal or person or monster. shown in the game it seems like he can turn into any enemy that he defeated. he also have habit of shrinking things and storing them in his ears. other abilities like cloud surfing, golden invencible body, and mirror image grown from his hair is all shown. Such a great looking game, and the gameplay seems very smooth, the monster design is otherworldly, oh and the end score is just pure childhood memory.
If you understand Chinese you will never get over how well written the prose and dialogue is in this game. This is literally the kind of prose that’s written for massive Chinese productions
@@ariesdane5876 why would it be japanese? not only is it made by chinese developers but it's heavily based on one of the most well known Chinese stories
My dad used to tell me bedtime stories when I was a kid. One of his favorites to tell, which soon became my favorite to hear, was Wu Kong - The Monkey King. My dad just died in July. So UA-cam couldn't have recommended this at a better time. It honestly hits a lot harder now. Love you Papa
To people that are confused about the ending. The character showed up in the end was the actual Monkey King. If you are slightest familiar with "Journey to the West", I bet you are confused how can there be two Monkey Kings? Well here is a possible theory and some backgrounds. The answer lies in the story the studio is trying to tell which may be lost in the translation of the trailer. At the end of "Journey to the West"all the four main characters obtained Buddha status, or some form of godhood. In doing so, they must abandon their corporal carcasses. The story of the game picks up after this. From the dialogue of the NPCs you can see, they recognize the resemblance of the player controlled monkey with the legendary Monkey King, Sun WuKong. They keep saying, "you really look like him!" or "another monkey", which means they either have heard or seen him before. So, it is possible, the main character that is the player through out the game, is the mortal flesh which the King abandoned in obtaining his godhood. Since WuKong the Monkey King was born from the sky and earth through a sentient stone, this mortal carcass he left behind retained a lot of life, also the sins during his mortal life. Hence, the name of the game "Black Myth". After all, what greater enemy is there if not oneself?! PS: last four characters out of eight of the trailer , literally says “revisit the journey to the west”, which implies the original journey to the west was completed.(This paragraph has been pointed out by many Chinese viewers as incorrect. The last remark of 8 Chinese characters is referring to a past regret the leading dev has with his former employer Tencent) PPS: There is a humongous volume of contemporary Chinese literature debating which monkey (The Stone Monkey or the Six Eared Macaque) made it to the west at the end. Currently the theory that Sun WuKong made it to the west is winning simply because of one piece of evidence. In the original novel, Yama the king of death plane stroke the name Sun WuKong off of his ledger after being threatened to be eliminated from existence by Sun WuKong himself. This cannot be undone, which means, Sun Wukong is hardwired incapable of death. Even the Buddha himself cannot restore the ledger of death. But, in the chapter where two "Monkey Kings" fought, one of them did die. This means the Six Eared Macaque was the one killed.
Yooooo, so many theories about this side of story just from some UA-cam comments under this video. Can someone tell me where I can possibly find a compilation of these story in English? There also seem to be many that are centered around how he doesn't reach the end of the journey, so there's replacement, or passing it down to another monkey. Seems interesting
@@kintokisa The "replacement"story was along the journey there was a doppelganger who was as powerful as the Monkey King tried and to replace him. Even without the Monkey King's legendary armor and weapon they still matched each other evenly. So they went to Gautama Buddha for judgement, each claimed to be the real and true Monkey King. The official story was the buddha identified the doppelganger and WuKong then killed him. But, there are theories saying it was the other way around. Either way, this story line does not leave much space for recreation.
@@kintokisa I've heard story about Six-ear Macaque killed Sun Wukong and followed Tang Seng to the west, hence for the later part of the journey the disguised Wukong (Six-ear Macaque) become obedient to his master which is opposite of what Sun Wukong original is. They didn't realise he's not Wukong because they look exactly the same. In the beginning of the video, the old monkey also said: "Some said it wasn't him that granted the buddhahood, the real him was already dead on the journey to the west." This may be the hint of of Six-ear Macaque killing Wukong and replacing him as "Victorious Fighting Buddha".
The abilities of the Monkey king and the story of "Journey to the West" are common sense for average Chinese, but I can see how it may sound strange to ppl from a different culture. Just want to list some of the main abilities of the Monkey King from the original story, not sure how much will be shown in the game: 1. Transform into 72 different forms. 2. His weapon is "如意金箍棒“, shown as the gold characters on the weapon in the game play. It was originally the pillar of the ocean, and the Monkey King forcefully took it from the dragon king of the ocean. It can change size as he wish. So normally when he is not fighting, he make it needle-sized and hide it inside his ear. 3. He s also known for the ability to pull, blow his own hair, and turn them into his clones to help with the fight. 4. He can travel very long distance instantly on "筋斗云“ which is a special cloud that pretty much function as his personal jet. :) 5. He also has "火眼金睛“ which is an ability that he obtained when he was trapped in the Alchemy furnace in the god's realm. The ability enables him to recognize other transformed/disguised creatures/demons in their original forms. But what shown in the game was likely the story before he obtained the ability. Also it may not be needed for the game play. 6. "金钢之躯" which translate to iron body. He is immune to common metal weapons and regular fire. 7. His spirit can also go out of his body. In the story, when they are in an dangerous environment, he sometimes leave his body with the group to protect his master, but his spirit will travel far away to get help. Again, not sure if this will be shown in the game since the story seemed to be before the actual Journey to the West, also it may not be something needed for the game play. 8. Also common magic spells and superpower that Western super heroes have, such as enormous power, fly, freeze the enemy, moving things in the air, spit fire, ect. He is pretty much the ultimate superhero in ancient China. I am sure this is not a complete list of his abilities. That is why this game gonna be so exciting! I am so hyped! Hopefully they will pull it through and make the game available next year or the year after!
You can tell how it influenced Goku's creation from Dragon Ball. Flying Nimbus and the magic pole are straight up from Son Wukong, not to mention he's also a monkey!

The developers actually showed so many hidden references from Journey to the West in this trailer! This might be confusing to the viewers who is not familiar with the story but I believe when a Chinese kid saw this... omg 1. beside the one of 72 transformation (the golden cicada) in 2:26, Sun Wukong's another iconic ability to freeze enemy. There is a golden Chinese character "定“ which means freeze when he used it. 2. 4:06 that he puts the new weapon in his ear which is another ability that Wukong can shrink almost everything and he always stored them in his ear. 3. The short old potato headed man with long wooden crutch in 4:46 is a classical appearance of earth deities in Chinese myth. They will typically pop up with a smoke around the temple in the mountain areas. 4. More interestingly the developers used the earth deity's words to mock Tencent: "The temple caught on a big fire though I heard they rebuilt it, but if one's heart was burnt to ash what's the meaning of recovering that temple?" Many talented developers joined that big company with a dream eventually ended up making garbage. The pure profit driven/capitalized operation of these companies in gaming industry in China burned out the passion of both Chinese players and the developers. If the core of gaming industry was destroyed what's the meaning of how much money u make? 5. 8:55 for sure a lot of people know Naruto as many other J anime you can find tons of inspiration from Journey to the West. Another Sun Wukong's iconic ability which he uses his own hairs to create clones. 6. 10:46 as many ppl already said when those 5 Chinese characters showed up (如意金箍棒), u know who is the real boss. The one u controlled previously in the game is probably the 6 eared macaque who can imitate anything he saw. 7. 11:01 looks like the Thunderclap Monastery and 11:05 is probably the Flaming Mountains which are two of famous chapters in the book. 8. 11:11 Sun Wukong's headache may comes from Tight-Fillet Spell. Guanyin Bodhisattva put a crown on his head and taught Tang Sanzang the spell that can shrink it, so he can use it to control Sun Wukong when he is not obeying certain rules. 9. 11:36 Some very famous characters from the book: Immortals of Tiger, Golden Winged Great Peng and those 4 Heavenly Kings with their iconic weapons. 10. 11:53 the most famous chapter of both TV show and the book for many Chinese kids. Havoc in Haven !! 100k vs 1 and he always wins!! 11. 12:30 the music in countless of Chinese ppl's childhood memories from the TV series in 1986
As a Chinese person, it makes me so happy to see Chinese companies make Chinese products instead of trying to make something Western, there is so much mythology and culture to make games and movies from!!!

@@feckrofelix2064apparently there’s no heaven stage, unless it’s a secret ending nobody has found yet, hope there’s one tho, but until now, only two endings has been found
At the end of the boss fight, the five chinese characters lit up one by one on the real monkey king's weapon are “如意金箍棒RuYiJinGuBang”, the name of the weapon. Bluntly translated,“the stick with golden edges that can transform as will”,but in a poewetic choice of words in chinese. It can shrink and grow according to Sun Wukong's will, shorter or longer, thinner or thicker. When Wukong has no need of using it, he would simply hide it in his ear hole. This can explain the confusion of some people who are not familiar with the original story, when he pulled the weapon "out of his brain" in the footage lol. I'm thrilled to see that they present the ear hiding weapon in the game exactly according to the original story, just like what they do to the monkey's classic tricks such as “the 72 forms of changes,” “the monkey hairs doppelgangers”and"the traveling cloud". The original story The Journey To The West, the weapon RuYiJinGuBang (known as the monkey king bar in English)of Sun Wukong has many other names. All these names have no translated version. To my opinion, simple "Monkey King Bar"cannot show the divinity and myth of the weapon. One of the names is “定海神针DingHaiShenZhen” which means “the giant sacred pillar that stabilize the ocean”. Actually the stick is originally not a weapon, but a giant pillar stuck into the ocean to seal the enormous energy of the sea so it would remain calm and peaceful. Before the monkey take on the journey, before he is punished by the Buhda RuLai, when he was still rebellious and wild. The monkey headed to "LongGong" the palace of Long in the ocean to "borrow"(rob actually) a weapon. "LongWang" lord of the ocean offered him all the finest blades hammers and lances. But the monkey waved each of them in his hand and said:"all too light, not heavy enough". Then he fixed his eye one the giant pillar that connect the bottom and the surface of the sea.He held it in both arms and pulled it out said“this one feels just heavy enough for me. I think I'll take it!”. And the pillar itself felt his owner of destiny and shrank to the normal size of a weapon with its new name on it "如意金箍棒(RuYiJinGuBang)", the exact five words shown on the weapon in the end of the trailer when the real monkey king shows up.Since it's an ancient artifact to stabilize the ocean, it enrages LongWang and many other gods that it was taken away by the monkey. By the way, no matter what size the weapon is, whether it's hidden in the ear or it is the size of a normal weapon, its weight remains still to the weight of the giant sacred ocean pillar.

This is Sun Wokong from Chinese myth. It has movies and drama serial TV in about 1999- 2006 . Some people from the west will not know this characters.. but I agree "what is this" bcs they not implant full English subtitles
People that know Wukong knows how true to character they have done for this game with all the abilities shown. I grew up watching wukong way before dragon ball and he was one of my favorite “hero”. Can’t wait.

This is from Journey to the West (Chinese: 西遊記), a Chinese fiction novel published in the 16th century during the Ming dynasty. It is one of the Four Great Classical Novels of Chinese literature. It has been described as arguably the most popular literary work in East Asia. Arthur Waley's popular abridged translation, Monkey, is well known in English-speaking countries. Actually, many Chinese grew up with this novel and TV series and animations from it.

the developer. They said on Chinese social media that the main purpose for these video they just released is to recruit more competent game developers. They have around 30 at the moment. They had only 13 last year. Normally a game with this quality requires 80-100.
@@thomaslynch5189 When responding to extensive amount of queries on Zhihu (Chinese Quora) the managing developer Ji Feng indicated that the "studio still has a dire shortage of personnels. Growing up as a chinese kid, this game is like a dream! Probably many western people won't understand some moments of the gameplay (wukong's headache, the white dragon-horse, tang seng, etc.), but damn I am impressed by how accurate it looks.
Just coming back here after the final trailer. Time flies yet it feels like forever ago but I’m glad this game is finally coming out soon 👍🏼 the reminiscence goes hard on this trailer.
Man, Chinese and Japanese mythology is just so rich and interesting that I am surprised that it is not explored more often by big game development studios... It's a freaking treasure trove of great content...
Wait until African mythology starts coming out, the world has so much to offer in storytelling but it has been dominated by a euro centric view for a while.
There's probably lots of games with an emphasis and accurate representation on Chinese culture and mythology but they either: A. Will never be released outside of China. B. Become delisted or removed from (digital) retailers like that Devotion video game. C. They don't get public appeal. As for Japan, there are tons anime and manga being inspired, referenced or represented by Japanese folklore and mythology. You're probably just not aware of the references, themselves.
For people who confuse about the ending where there is another Wukong: in the novel, Wukong has to face a very, very strong opponent that even him cannot take down, and he has to ask for help from the Gods of the Heaven, and later the Great Buddha. The opponent is Six Ear Macaque, the enemy who is even stronger than Wukong at the time, and looks exactly like him, so similar that his master Tang Seng and brothers cannot differentiate. In the novel, Wukong gets help from many Gods from Heaven to take down this opponent, making the Six Ear Macaque one of the strongest, if not the strongest, enemy that Wukong has ever fought. There is also another myth that during their last fight, the Six Ear Macaque kills Wukong, and replaces him in the team to continue the Journey to the West. That also explains why after the fight, Wukong has changed his personality to be better, more obedient to his master, and also stronger! Fun fact: Goku in the Dragon Ball is based on Son Wu Kong. The full name of Goku is Son Goku. Sorry for my English.
Well I believe this story happens after the actual journey to the west, as the real Wukong stopped the hero here using his own club. And this makes the storyline very interesting: who is the hero? And what did Wukong do during this plot? Game Science will answer at the right time, I think.

Many people who don't know Chinese characters may be confused at the other Wukong with armor appeared at the end of this Trailer (10:45). This game must have some story to tell between our main character and the other Wukong. This part of story have never appeared on the book "journey to the west", I am really looking forward how the company Gamescience will tell the story.
That's what I was thinking I don't know Chinese but ever since I learned about Wu Kong I read up on him so much that i recognize the characters without knowing Chinese. When I saw him pull his staff out from his ear I was so impressed bc usually when not fighting that's what he would do he would shrink his staff down to the side of a needle and hide it in his ear. But then I saw the characters on the other staff and was like. Hol up....I'm so excited I just hope they don't take 4 years to give us this game.
jiawei so the one who interrupted is the intelligent Stone Monkey, like the one we’re first introduced to. And the one we were following for the first half of the trailer is the 6 Eared Macaque that he fights in the story?
what i heard is this story is not from Journey to the west, but a online story called 悟空传, written by 今何在. It's a dark version of Journey to the west. totally different.
Y’all might not relate to this but as someone who grew up in China, seeing the “如意金箍棒” inscription on that staff lighting up is like seeing Vader igniting his light saber in that Rogue One ending scene, it legit gives me goosebumps.

Where the Wolf 灵虚子 is a friend of the "Head" of Black Wind Mountain, which the Head boss of black wind mount is a black grizzly 黑熊怪. The boss in the video, the wolf went there to celebrate Black Grizzly‘s birthday. 灵虚子 also brought 2 "Golden Revitalizers" as a gift, but he got killed by Wukong - the monkey king midway. Wukong- the monkey king can shape-shift into 72 different creatures, that's why you see him throughout the video as a golden cicada. He was born from a rock, a rock has been getting all the earthen sun and moon essence, that is why he could change to a larger monkey and smash the ground. And also the way he "parrys" the attacks is one of his other abilities, called 铜头铁臂 direct translation is the Copper head and iron arm which makes him durable to physical attacks. The move he freezes others is called 定身术 - Immobilization or paralyzation. His fur(S)/hair can make clones of himself and other things. I guess one of this game's system is to be able to get the defeated mini-bosses' weapon as artifacts and use them against the bosses, that is why he transforms into the wolf using the flame spear. When he was trying to finish off 灵虚子, he got blocked by another version of himself? I assume the play through character represents the dark side of the monkey king? These are just my guesses. His Weapon is a stick/staff called 如意金箍棒 - the Monkey King Bar. Which can elongation, shorten, largen, and shrink. That's why you see him puts/pull it to/from his ear. In the end, the cloud he was riding is called 筋斗云. He can also travel 180K kilometers with one single somersault. Also at the very end, that is him 大闹天宫 - battles in heaven. Chapter 4-6 in the novel. All the bosses in the ending quick flash are all present some gods or demons. Please like this comment if you find this helpful! Aniq Amsyar Azwan the Jade Emperor never actually fight in the original novel and we don't know if he is actually strong or not. Theoretically, he has pratice Taoist for thousands of lives, so he should be strong. But since Tripitaka (Wukong's second master, whom Wukong have to protect on the journey) also praticed Buddhist for 10 lives and became a Buddha at the end without gaining any super power, we can assume that the Jade Emperor is not strong in combat. If he is, he shouldn't have to ask the Buddha for help in order to defeat Wukong.

The original Dragon Ball (not Z) is the closest thing we got to an adaptation of his story in Western culture. It has a similar feel (quirky but likeable protagonist goes on crazy and action filled adventures) and some of the stuff is lifted directly from Wukong's traits (the extending staff, riding on a cloud, etc)

The last music of the video comes from the 1986 Chinese TV series journey to the West. It is the childhood memories of several generations of Chinese. So we all cried when we heard this music.
Not sure if you have read about this novel (the game is based on a chinese fantasy novel from almost 500 years ago), and the 80s tv show based on the novel is amazing too. The Chinese music and art is too beautiful. Now it's 2024, game will be out in Aug.

This is just a chinese indie studio adapting the 16th century chinese novel "Journey to the West" into a video game with a little bit of dark souls style of gameplay
@@IAMthatIAM992 You need to leave the house and realize that there are other video games besides cyberpunk 2077. Besides your hype will kill the game if it actually flops, best to reserve zero expectation for any video game
Some explanation of the background of this game: The game is based on a book called "The Journey to the West", which is published in the Ming dynasty (16th century). It is one of the four great classics of China, almost every Chinese people know the basic story and the abilities of Wu Kong even some of them have never read the original book or watch the old TV series (for example me) It's really hard to translate the meaning of some words they said to English, for example, the name "Wu Kong"(the name of the monkey) came from an ancient Chinese poem and it has some Taoist connotations. Even in some places, when the translation is accurate, it is still difficult for foreign audiences to experience the artistic conception, because of our different cultural backgrounds. And the whole story is closely linked to myths and legends and Buddhism. When the five golden words "如意金箍棒" appear on the stick of "the other Wu Kong" who is in armor, all the Chinese audience got insane and I've got goosebumps, and I found I can't explain that feeling. (It feels likes the feeling when I see Bucky and all the other characters suddenly came back in Advanger: End Game when they fought Thanos!) The music at the end of the trailer also gave many Chinese people goosebumps because it is toooooo classic. This is the childhood of many people born in the 1980s and 1990s.
@@akumanokage6183 The five words can be translate as “As-Your-Will Golden-Banded Cudgel” or “The Compliant Golden-Hooped Rod”, it was originally the Divine Pillar that work as a stabilizer of the Four Seas and later become the magical weapon of Sun Wukong, the Monkey King.
I love how they have sooo many of Wukong's powers included in the game, straight out from the book. The monkey clone army from his hair, the cloud stepping shoes, golden armor, his transformations, it makes me happy they are really incorporating the myth.

The last remark of 8 Chinese characters is referring to a past regret the leading dev has with his former employer Tencent)
PPS: There is a humongous volume of contemporary Chinese literature debating which monkey (The Stone Monkey or the Six Eared Macaque) made it to the west at the end.
Thanks captain!
Seems interesting
i think this is the best explanation just yet. thanks captain
Just want to list some of the main abilities of the Monkey King from the original story, not sure how much will be shown in the game:
Yea didn't he take his weapon from Ao Kuang? Think I spelled it right. His hawk and bull form are in game. My main.

The developers actually showed so many hidden references from Journey to the West in this trailer! This might be confusing to the viewers who is not familiar with the story but I believe when a Chinese kid saw this... omg
1. beside the one of 72 transformation (the golden cicada) in 2:26, Sun Wukong's another iconic ability to freeze enemy.

At the end of the boss fight, the five chinese characters lit up one by
one on the real monkey king's weapon are “如意金箍棒RuYiJinGuBang”, the name of the weapon.

This game is based on the Ming Dynasty novel Journey to the West. This novel has great influence in China, even in East Asia and Southeast Asia. It has been adapted into countless novels, cartoons, movies and games for hundreds of years. Monkey King is regarded as a superhero in ancient China. He and his two brothers escorted his master to ancient India to collect Buddhist scriptures. The book has millions of words and describes one The grand and profound mythological world. The murals at the beginning of the video are of Tang Dynasty style, and the representative works are Dunhuang frescoes, and the Tang Dynasty is the time of journey to the West.Monkey King has the ability of 72 changes, which can be changed into 72 kinds of objects. All his weapons are installed in his ears. He has the ability to fix the enemy. His mount is cloud, which is very fast. The last music of the video comes from the 1986 Chinese TV series journey to the West. It is the childhood memories of several generations of Chinese. So we all cried when we heard this music.

Many people who don't know Chinese characters may be confused at the other Wukong with armor appeared at the end of this Trailer (10:45). The characters on his weapon is "如意金箍棒", indicating that he is the real monkey king who went to the dragon palace deep in the ocean and took the weapon out. This game must have some story to tell between our main character and the other Wukong.
This part of story have never appeared on the book "journey to the west", I am really looking forward how the company Gamescience will tell the story.
the one we control should be the monkey with 6 ears which he was born in the same stone with wukong ?

The boss fight is in 黑风山 Black Wind Mountain, Guanyin temple originally in the novel chapter 16.

Will he fights the Jade Emperor?
Edit: From the lore perspective ofc.

The song appeared in the form of instrumental music, and the composer Xu Jing-qing boldly chose the orchestration: psychedelic bouncing electric sound, bass guitar; Guzheng(Chinese Zither), Pipa(Chinese lute), Chime; Western trumpet, violin and other orchestral instruments; exotic Africa Tambourine; an ethereal female voice.
The various styles of musical instruments and vocals are like mountains one after another, each doing its own thing, but in orderly layers, strong, elegant and soft.

Some explanation of the background of this game:
The game is based on a book called "The Journey to the West", which is published in the Ming dynasty (16th century). It is one of the four great classics of China, almost every Chinese people know the basic story and the abilities of Wu Kong even some of them have never read the original book or watch the old TV series (for example me)
It's really hard to translate the meaning of some words they said to English, for example, the name "Wu Kong"(the name of the monkey) came from an ancient Chinese poem and it has some Taoist connotations.
(It feels likes the feeling when I see Bucky and all the other characters suddenly came back in Advanger: End Game when they fought Thanos!)
The music at the end of the trailer also gave many Chinese people goosebumps because it is toooooo classic. This is the childhood of many people born in the 1980s and 1990s.
thanks for the insight. i actually remember watching the TV shows. for some reason it aired in my country too lol
