    A concise, lucid and masterly lesson on the history of southern Mesopotamia. As some one similarly passionate about Mesopotamian history, i can not help noticing a recurrent pattern in it. The forces from the desert, the forces from Elam and forces from northern Iran/ Caucus have interplayed with the native Sumerian culture that shaped its story over millenia. Akkadians, Amorites, Assyrians, Aramaeans were those desert forces ( later Arabs). Elam had love - hate relationship from Sumerian times till Neo- Babylonian times, It should be noted that the Achaemenids came under Elamite tutelage before they conquered Medes and Neo-Babylonians. Then there are these forces, the northern Iran - Indo European ones. Possibly Gutians, but defenitely Hittites, Mittani, Kassites, Medes and Parthians. These three forces interacted with the native Sumerian core, inheriting its wisdom and spreading it to farther parts of the world. That story continued, in Greece and Rome, In Iran and India. Thanks for your brilliant history lessons and you really rekindled my interest in the history of antiquity. A few suggestions. If you can dwelve more upon the bronze age collapse and its consequences in both Mesopotamia and also Egypt, that will be great. Also if you can link the Mesopotamian history with Indus Valley history. Second millenium BC saw the end of that civilization as well and its links with Mesopotamia from Sumerian times is well known. Hoping to see more content from you.

      The Scythians called themselves something along the lines of "Skulata", which the Greeks transliterated into Scoloti. Meanwhile, the Kassites called themselves Galzu. I do not believe there is a connection any closer than a wider Indo-European one (and most wouldnt even put it that far)

    • @vishkum2ru

    Now that was a journey. It's amazing to me that civilization was so complex in the era where so much rich history is glossed over in favour of Sargon and Hammurabi. It also astounds me that this era, which was as distant to the Late Roman Republic and Early Principate (my favourite period of ancient history) as they are to us, is yet remembered in such detail.
    So much calamity has occurred over the millennia since these people lived and these men ruled, yet somehow the remnants of their civilization can be recalled by us now.

    Nice to actually see praise for Babylon every once in a while. It's a breath of fresh air compared to all the bashing I seen over the years.
    If they where really as bad as people say they were, they wouldn't have lasted a single century. They were just a nation of people doing what nations did back in that time period.

    • @bocoom
      @bocoom 7 місяців тому +2

      Let me guess. The bashing came from people who hold the words of the bible in high regard? The people who wrote that bible were just mad their ancestors got conqured and their own people were weak.

But when they do it's that the Babylonians though of themselves as the greatest empire in the world at the time, which is basically what every empire in those times did.
      But you have to remember that the neo-Babylonian empire that conquered Judah lasted less than a single century, which means that they probably weren't the greatest people in that region at the time. The city itself however existed for millennia before being abandoned.

    Great info. I never heard of the Kassite people before. I'm wondering if they might have been Scythians since they spoke an Indo-European language, were great horsemen and their art centered on depicting horses. Is there any evidence that they came from the Steppes and might have been Scythians? Thank you for this comprehensive video on the Babylonians. Much appreciated.

    • @chloe-historyandgames

      i’m not cy but i believe they were based on their indo-iranian names

    • @HistorywithCy
      @HistorywithCy  Рік тому +15

      Hi, thanks for watching and great question! So I think most scholars would agree that they were not Scythians since that group would come about 7-800 years later and move south from the steppes of Eurasia, With regard to speaking an Indo-European language, that is also debated but some believe this because as you pointed out, they were great horsemen and charioteers,like other Indo-European peoples. The issue with the language though is that our knowledge of it is limited to just some vocabulary - knowledge of Kassite grammar at this time is pretty much non-existent. The only proven speakers of Indo-European languages that we know about that were contemporary to Kassite were Hittite, Luwian and a few others, and to my knowlege, the Kassite words available to us don't seem to be related to them or could have been loan words. Some also compare them to the ruling class of the Mitanni, who have very Indo-European sounding names. As for their homeland, Babylonian and Assyrian texts just mention that they came from the central Zagros mountains. My opinion is that the Kassites very well could have had some link to Indo-European peoples like the kings of the Mitanni, but there is just not enough evidence out there to definitively prove this. Hope this helps. Thanks again for watching and all the best for 2023!
