This is the best video, with step-by-step instructions, for changing oil on the 4Runner. Especially for the explanation on first removing the front plastic cover (under the bumper), then secondly removing the metal skid plate in behind. Well done....thanks Mike!

That’s good man, it’s always nice to help out your parents. Also good job for learning how to do at a young age. It’s not that hard to learn my dad taught me. I’m also 17 and I’ll be 18 in July 18.
I did it , thank you for this video. One thing, by accident I founded that you should push white draining adapter all the way and let it sit in, for few minutes. That's how you drain filter housing.
wow this really makes me appreciate 4th gen oil changes & with a Fumoto drain valve it's almost too easy. It'll take me longer to watch this video than change my oil.
Kudos Mike-thumbs down to Toyota. My first 4Runner was a 2009. It was one of the easiest oil and filter changes you could ever find. Filter accessed at the top of the engine-simple plug to remove from the oil pan. While I have now owned 3 of the newer generation 4 Runners one gets the feeling Toyota continues to try and make the simple difficult. With special tools and multiple plates to remove I have the distinct feeling they are just trying to make you go to the dealer rather than the hassle of DIY.
Hi there. You are using a correct reputable oil brand mobil one but Fram oil filter even for syntetic purpose? I would highly recomend either Pularator or Dealer oil filter since the Fram material made are complete por quality.
Owner's manual calls for 6.6 quarts. every time I take it to Toyota they put 7 in and say that's how Toyota trained them to do it. it's always 3/16 to 1/4 inch above the fill "dot" when i check it cold. They tell me I should only check it when it's warm, however, when I do, it's hard to tell the exact fill, because it's smears up the dipstick... good video!👍
Funny that they say only check it when it's warm but the capacity of 6.6 quarts listed in the owner's manual doesn't say warm oil? I would expect warm oil to expand, making it even higher on the dip-stick.
Very good video I have a 2005 SR5 4Runner mine is a V6 with oil filter on top very very easy to change and it has 235 Thousand Miles and still going strong you will get lots of mileage out of your 4 Runner and you will be surprised how the V6 got lots of power
Yeah the newer they are the bigger PITA they are, my Bimmer and Benz both have topside element filters. My MityVac extractor makes changes a breeze. Now one site says 5/20 this site says 0/20 which is correct and I'd only use Toyota filters
Thanks for the instructions! Just did my first oil change on my 2021 TRD yesterday (I just bought it last month). The only difference I noticed was that the TRD skid plate weighs a ton, and there and it doesn't slide into the back plate so you can line up the holes. That was the biggest pain. Other than that, your video was a great tutorial!
I noticed you didn’t mention changing the o ring on the drain plug, I had mine ready but it seem like the old one didn’t come off or it didn’t have one so I didn’t want double the o ring so I left it as is.
Just a tip.. do the oil change outside the garage so you can hose off the pavement and add some soap and push broom scrub and the rain washes it even more everytime it rains. I used to work inside, now only in poor weather will I because cleaning the floor is more tedious and the wife doesnt like it oily. Nice tips on the job though, the maint reminde trick is key ! Thanks !
I have a 2022 TRD Sport which has the same wheels/tires as the Limited. I tried to change the oil today. When I tried swinging down the metal skid plate. it is touching the floor and will not swing down fully to pull it out from the two holes. I have to try it again when I get a ramp I can roll the suv on.
I'm usually change my own oil but been lazy since i got my 5th gen Limited. Your video shows me everything I need to know. Awesome video. I'm gonna pick up a filter and do it this week.
I never do oil change before so I have a question. Before we put back the drain plug, can we pour some new oil in from the top at engine bay so the new oil can help to wash out the old oil? Also do you do your oil change every 5000 miles/6 months or 10k miles/1 year?
No, don't do that. If you wanted to do anything to help with an additional flush, just before you change the oil, add one quart of tranny fluid, let it run for about 10-15 minutes, then drain it all out. The trans fluid will help to remove deposits, etc. It acts like a detergent
For anyone watching this, the plastic drain tool "snaps" into place. You get it into position and push it up until it clicks. It will stay in place and will drain the filter cannister. When it's done, you push the drain tool a bit sideways and it will pop off taking the o-ring with it. Very easy.
Thanks, been wanting to do the oil changes on my own but the canister adapter tools I have gotten all break or don't work, and I have had to take it into the shop. Thanks for the link to the right tool. Good work on the video.
Great video. I do have a question though. After running the engine, shouldn't the oil be allowed time to drain down to the pan for a more accurate reading? Thanks!
So the first purpose of starting the engine is to lubricate the system with new oil. You can cut it off and wait afterwards to let the oil settle but it’s about as accurate either way.
Excellent instructions. Better process than it was on my 2001 Tacoma, but still a giant pain in the butt to do an oil change. I typically like to do my own oil changes, but after watching this I doubt I'll be doing them on my 2022 4Runner when it comes in. For all the great things that Toyota does, the oil change process is definitely not one of them.
0:23 “brand isn’t all that important” I’d definitely have to disagree there, Toyota genuine / Mobil1 is definitely the way to go, wouldn’t use anything other than that. Good job on the video, easy and clear instructions!
I was taught to lubricate all o-rings and never roll an o-ring on. It looked like you rolled the larger o-ring over the threads. The technique I was taught was to stretch (but not over-stretch) and pull the o-ring down over the threads and just work my way around. If o-rings are rolled, they can be over-stretched and not seal correctly.
Really helpfull! Will do my oil change myself at the end of the month on my 5th gen. I have one question tho. Does the 5th gen have an egr valve particle system? Because I drive a lot in the city so my concern is that my egr (if i have one) might be all dirty bc of that driving. Thanks for the videos and keep it going!
@@DrivenCompanion I've been changing ours every 5,000 miles as well but I am considering purchasing a premium filter (rated for 15 or 20,000 miles) and then changing the filter only every 10,000 miles.

@@Parzzyval A slightly used oil filter will filter better than a new one. In addition there will not be a dry start. I’d bet my engine lasts longer and besides the 4.0 is indestructible and will easily outlast the frame.
How many times have you changed the oil in this vehicle? You're checking the dip-stick so many times my head is spinning. And if it's just over the lower mark why do you say you're just going to add a little more? Sounds like you could add a quart!
Why in the Hell Toyota would make a simple oil change into a job such as this?!? 3 skid plates to remove 2 o rings to replace. Why not just a simple screw on filter like the other models?? I’ve always driven Toyota’s and this is a first for me. Not even a hole in the skid plate for the drain bolt??
This is to a do a simple oil change? Not for me. Toyota making it a hassel. Its time to make a consumer complain to them. Enough people do so. They will do so. It looks like a intent made by them. Most brands have a top hood oil change now with a oil plug at the bottom.
Canister adapter tool? ... 🤔 Oh, you mean oil filter cap wrench...😉 The type of drain plug adapter (push in versus screw in) on the oil filter is determined by who makes the filter and not by what model Toyota you have.
The main things I would suggest would be: You don’t really need to drain your filter before taking the housing off. Kind of a waste of time as it rarely comes off 100% clean. Just expect to be getting dirty. Also showing the bolts visually instead of pointing them out would be less vague. For people that aren’t mechanically minded, there’s lots of bolts and fasteners.
I've done that. They typically try and get you out as fast as possible, which translates to they don't drain all of the oil/sludge out. They also either put too much oil in, or not enough, both are bad. It doesn't take that long, and it gives you a few minutes to look over the vehicle and check the other fluids, filters, etc. and see if there are any leaks underneath.
