Air drying isn’t so great either. You can’t win! I go for microfiber towel and a blow dryer with a diffuser + heat protection. As an aside, when it comes to all these lawsuits against hair care brands : It boggles the mind that the first and only thing some people do when they experience hair loss, is suing whoever makes their shampoo. And don’t they have to actually show evidence linking the hair loss to something about the shampoo (and rule out other possible explanations?)

I have naturally dry & curly hair and straightened it for many years. It was a lot of work blowing it straight with a blow dryer, then smoothing it out with a flat iron. One morning while sitting at my desk at work I could smell my burnt bangs. 😵 It smelled like burnt rubber! That was my epiphany, I never straightened my hair again. 😧 It took many months to restore my curls back to an even pattern over my entire head.

I’m super sad about it, but thank you for encouraging me that it is reversible. I know in a few months hopefully my next hair cut we can cut off the rest of the bad hair and have healthy (short) hair. You are right, no amount of conditioner or oils helps this. Even after hair mask, the damaged hair is really wirey and dry. Thank you for the video. Love your channel.

Happy Thursday, Dr. Dray and Friends!🎊 My super fine, thin hair has improved greatly since using a microfiber towel and blow drying at the cool setting. I made the mistake to bleach my very fine hair multiple times in one week and I was using heat everyday back in 2022 . This caused my hair to be extremely damage and fall out. I shaved all my hair off and now that my hair grew back so healthy , I never ever use heat on my hair. I have learned to accept my natural hair. But my natural hair is not curly but it is not straight.
I wish I could feel comfortable doing that. I feel the need to blow dry/heat style daily due to comfort and aesthetics as my hair has always been frizzy and wavy and I never liked how it looked naturally. But after bleaching/highlighting multiple times and constant heat damage it is very damaged. I am letting the color grow out now but I hate the dividing line of brown and blonde, and all the damage even seemed to alter my texture! It's like it's not wavy, but it's not straight. I feel like I look sickly if I don't style it because it looks so unkempt. Anyway I need to try & give myself more "air dry" days, but it seems like it's growing SO SLOW. I wish I could just chop it off and start over with healthy hair. I'm amazed at your courage and confidence to do it!
I remember seeing advice for swimming and protecting hair to dampen the hair, place on hair conditioner and then put on swim cap. Even without using the conditioner, supposedly dampening the hair makes the swim cap easier to put on.
Getting the hair wet with tabwater first, also prevents the hair soaking up water with chlorine in it. I've found that for really good protection, a bit of Vaseline around the edges is best. Conditioner rinses out too easily.

Thank you so much! All this time I’ve been changing shampoos, spent enormous $$$ into hair care that just hasn’t been working! All this time i had no idea that my hairstylist and i have been mistreating my wet hair with high heat! No more high heat on wet hair for me - thank you Doc!
My hair is thick, wavy and I have a lot of it. Even with an undercut. I always heat style my hair because if I don’t not only my hair is untamable, it gets dirty by the next day since I would need to use a lot of product to keep it under control. So I choose to straighten it, I also look better with straight hair as my face is wide and have big cheeks lol. Now I do deep condition every time I wash my hair and use the lowest setting on my hair straightener. I guess I’m very lucky since even though my hair sheds both when I wash it and heat style it, I still have lots. I also live in a hot and humid place and having my hair done helps to keep it under control
Years ago i swam in a pool every other day. I got the tip of rinsing my hair quickly in tap water before putting it in a swim cap, the idea being that chlorinated pool water wouldn't be able to saturate the hair if regular water was already doing so. Anyway, don't know it there was any truth to that or if it was just the swim cap, but it seemed to help-my hair didn't change or get drier through those years of swimming.
This happened to me. I used a round bristle heat brush according to the box and boiled my poor hair from roots to ends. Half a year later and still suffering the effects, especially since my own hair is extremely straight and strong so the bubbles felt very apparent. I do know a lot about my own hair now after this!
Morning Dr.Dray! My bf bought the dove dandruff shampoo by accident and so I’ve been using it. Wow, my hair is soft! I don’t know how it’s different then regular non dandruff shampoo but a happy accident 😁😁have a fabulous day! 💙
Wow, this is so interesting! I try to limit my use of hot tools on my hair: only use my hair dryer when needed on a low heat (I try my best to air dry!) and only occasionally use hot rollers on special occasions

So I‘m wondering what is your opinion on the new hot tools Dyson and GHD came out with recently which take you hair from wet to styled? They claim it doesn’t damage hair but after seeing your video I cannot imagine how not if they are used with higher heat which Im certain they have to bc you would never get a smooth result otherwise.. 🤔
Hi Dr. Dray, After telogen effluvium, does the hair often grow back in a different unruly pattern or texture? I hope you are having a great day. Thanks in advance ❤
Many years ago, I bought a shampoo bar (from a health food store) & the first time I used it, my hair had the craziest reaction! I stayed away from bar shampoo for years! Eventually I tried a different one & had great results.. My hairs' reaction to the first one was (as best I can describe it) to seize up! It was as if the shampoo shrunk my hair ! It felt very odd. Thankfully, shampooing w/another shampoo made it relax & go back to normal. Yeah, hair issues can be traumatic, for sure. Side note: I'm trying a bar shampoo now & it's terrific.
I typically use high heat to cut down on time, then switch to low heat when my hair is like 30% dry. Is it a better routine to use low heat first? Thank you for all your videos, they have been so helpful over the years!
I've been tending to do the same. My partner got me the Dyson Supersonic last Christmas and early on I was good and always used the lowest heat setting. However lately I've been sleeping in more & having trouble getting ready in the mornings due to chronic health issues, so I often start out with high heat and turn it down when it's mostly dry. I don't think this is best for the hair. I just need it dry ASAP. The best way for blow drying is to let your hair towel & air dry to ~80% then blow dry until done. But you do the best you can. I do try to leave my hair down and just brush it back while I do my makeup so it can air dry a bit, but it's often still pretty wet when I use the dryer. Whatever you can do to avoid high heat will help save your strands from damage - whether it's towel dry it with a microfiber towel, let it air dry while you do other things, or just use low heat as much as possible.

Thank you for the empathy and the video. What shampoo do you recommend for fine, thin, menopausal hair? Also- I commented on another video but haven't had a response. What is the best lotion for crepey skin that will not take off a spray tan or is a self tanner? Thank you Dr Gray! Appreciate you!
Hey doc! For fighting acne, is it better to use salicylic acid in a face wash every morning or as a leave on exfoliant 2-3 times a week (like Paula's Choice)? Or does it actually not make that much of a difference how it's used?
FWIW the "old wives tale" about brushing x number of strokes a day to grow your hair WAS valid back before shampooing became popular. A combination of dust/powder bathing your hair and boar bristle brushes were used to effectively "sweep" debris off of the strands of hair. In-home plumbing and the use of shampoo took over as the primary form of hair cleaning in the 20th century.
I have curly and coarse hair that i use to bleach lightly before i went gray. I also heat styled and blew it dry. That is until I snapped off my bangs completely. You can do one or the other if you have curly hair but not both !
Can you do a video covering Ferulic acid? The one I got from the ordinary says it reduces hyperpigmentation and lowers vein visibility in the face but I’d like to know more about the ingredient
I know she's talked about Olaplex in a couple videos but dermatology channels that have gone more in depth with this brand are jenny liu and sam ellis.
Thx to your recommendation, I’m going to invest in the iRestore pro. Question: do you use any hair/scalp product with it? Thx, Dr D. You truly are the best.
I have my hair cut short to get through this hot summer. I think your short bob style years back is cute and sexy so took it as a reference. Due to the severe eczema, I couldn't even expose my skin last year!
I lose quite a bit of hair everytime I brush and wash them. Don't like it at all. But I have full head of hair. Bought some products for the ends. Maybe it was a wasting of money. I'll need a nice trim and that's it.
After I stopped working I decided to let my hair go grey, but I noticed that it seems to be more frizzy then it was when I colored it. I would have thought that it would be healthier since I'm no longer coloring it. I used to use Madison Reed hair color which supposedly had no harsh chemicals. Do you think maybe it actually helped the frizziness?
@@korra1223 Oh, that's odd. What about a cleansing shampoo then? Maybe it's built up from conditioner or styling products. I use a mild shampoo for my regular washes, because I wash every other day. But once or twice a month, I use something, that really thoroughly cleans the hair or my naturally wavy, voluminous hair will go oddly lank and flat. Otherwise, I can't think of anything, either. Especially, if you only have that problem in summer. My hair actually behaves better in high humidity. It gets frizzy and puffy in dry, artificially heated air.
@dr dray mam I don't use any heat styling.i use a gentle shampoo and deep conditioner, argan oil as a serum, use a silk pillowcase as well.but still my hair is frizzy 😢 and split ends.what should I do more for a Friz free hair💔
I can't find heat protectants in my country, can I use detangling sprays instead? they contain silicones and some have wheat/milk proteins also they don't make hair greasy?
hey Dr dray do you recommend using the 100% niacinamide powder from the ordinary and mixing that very well with a moisturizer to make nicinamide moisturizer?
There is one study everyone cites showing blow drying was better but in the study they kept the hairdryer pretty far away (I don’t remember the number) and moved it at a constant rate so the caveat was that blow drying the way most people do would be worse than air drying.
Thanks for your empathy. Yes it is just hair but it does demoralize a person and when it is dismissed as vanity it is very frustrating.
❤
I’m finding the opposite. I wish I didn’t have to worry about peoples comments regarding it
Putting my hair up in a silk bonnet and putting oil on it before washing has helped my hair so much.

Hey, I was wondering if you could review the new L'Oréal vitamin C serum. By the way, I love your videos ❤
Sorry for the typo Dr. Dray!
Hey doc!
For fighting acne, is it better to use salicylic acid in a face wash every morning or as a leave on exfoliant 2-3 times a week (like Paula's Choice)? Or does it actually not make that much of a difference how it's used?
it varies from person to person
FWIW the "old wives tale" about brushing x number of strokes a day to grow your hair WAS valid back before shampooing became popular. A combination of dust/powder bathing your hair and boar bristle brushes were used to effectively "sweep" debris off of the strands of hair. In-home plumbing and the use of shampoo took over as the primary form of hair cleaning in the 20th century.
Is this similar to medulated hair Dr Dray? (I had my hair analyzed and was told its heavily medulated and over moisturized.) Thank you!
Excited for this video because I was wondering about what to look for heat damage➰🤍
Can you define "too long"? As in "don't leave the blow dryer in one place for too long."
Dead protein hanging out😂😂
Doc hilarious ❤
I have curly and coarse hair that i use to bleach lightly before i went gray. I also heat styled and blew it dry. That is until I snapped off my bangs completely. You can do one or the other if you have curly hair but not both !
Yes dr.dray you’re so right heat is bad . Happy Thursday.😊
it is okay in moderation and when done right, but certain habits can lead to a lot of damage
Can you do a video covering Ferulic acid? The one I got from the ordinary says it reduces hyperpigmentation and lowers vein visibility in the face but I’d like to know more about the ingredient
Don't know if it's the same but she does have a video on resveratrol that covers the ordinary resveratrol plus ferulic acid serum.
Hello Dr. Dray, would you say that using a Dyson hair tool be safer along with a heat protectant?
Any tool is probably better with heat protection not just dyson
Will Olaplex help with hair damage like this?
I know she's talked about Olaplex in a couple videos but dermatology channels that have gone more in depth with this brand are jenny liu and sam ellis.
Thx to your recommendation, I’m going to invest in the iRestore pro. Question: do you use any hair/scalp product with it? Thx, Dr D. You truly are the best.
Can I use the sun bum product for heat styling? Or is it primarily used for sun protection?
What about the tools that dry hair from wet to dry. Would you say that they may cause bubble hair as well?
Yes. Many tools use the steam to straighten. I had this ? Too
I have my hair cut short to get through this hot summer. I think your short bob style years back is cute and sexy so took it as a reference. Due to the severe eczema, I couldn't even expose my skin last year!
How were you able to get it better? Suffering here
Thank you
I lose quite a bit of hair everytime I brush and wash them. Don't like it at all. But I have full head of hair. Bought some products for the ends. Maybe it was a wasting of money. I'll need a nice trim and that's it.
You said to use a heat protector if you have blonde hair. Is this true for white hair ?
Some of the gray hair channels say heat protectant can help with stopping the yellowing.
I haven't used a hairdryer in 20yrs lol i live in FLORIDA
@drdrayzday can you get heat hair damage by sleeping on an electric heated cushion or blanket ?
After I stopped working I decided to let my hair go grey, but I noticed that it seems to be more frizzy then it was when I colored it. I would have thought that it would be healthier since I'm no longer coloring it. I used to use Madison Reed hair color which supposedly had no harsh chemicals. Do you think maybe it actually helped the frizziness?
Have you checked out some of the gray hair channels? Some of them have talked about frizzy hair.
Grey hair has different texture I believe but not sure how coloring changes it
I air dry my hair and tuck my hair up in a hat since it’s highlighted so it doesn’t get bleached by the sun
I have such fine hair it dries too fast before I can get it styled!
Can hair damage and breaking off be caused by genetic hair loss and/or telogen effluvium episodes?
So stuff like Olaplex don't work??
She has video on olaplex
Thanks dr
Can u recommend a heat protection for air-dryer
Wondering the same. Maybe we don’t need?
The sound effects were amusing 😂
Happy Thursday! I’m wondering why in the summer after I wash my hair, when it dries it still seems oily and sticky? Is it because of the humidity?
Try shampooing it twice. Sometimes it takes a second round, to really get the hair clean.
@@raraavis7782 I always double shampoo! Even after still feels this way
@@korra1223
Oh, that's odd.
@@raraavis7782I think it depends on your hair and it’s porosity
Great video!
Thanks!
@dr dray mam I don't use any heat styling.i use a gentle shampoo and deep conditioner, argan oil as a serum, use a silk pillowcase as well.but still my hair is frizzy 😢 and split ends.what should I do more for a Friz free hair💔
see my other videos on hair damage and frizz, more tips there
Same here 😢
Can sun damage hair?
Yes, it can. Dr Dray has talked about this in videos.
I can't find heat protectants in my country, can I use detangling sprays instead? they contain silicones and some have wheat/milk proteins also they don't make hair greasy?
I know Dr Dray has at least one video talking about hair detanglers you could look up.
@@db-gb5xi she has one vlog talking about one detangling product but she didn't mention if detanglers can have any benefits for protecting from heat
@@riviews Doctor jenny liu has a video on haircare tips and talks about detangling sprays.
@@db-gb5xi Thanks! 🌷
I'll check her channel
Happy Thursday Dr Dray…see you tomorrow x💙🤩
So does this mean these steam flat irons that are suppose to be better for you hair are actually worse?
I’ve heard stylists say they’re just gimmicky
Wondering the same
hey Dr dray do you recommend using the 100% niacinamide powder from the ordinary and mixing that very well with a moisturizer to make nicinamide moisturizer?
no..i have a video on my issue this powder
People use styling tools when the hair is wet ? Oh wow. I mean you would think.
Many tools are designed to be used while wet too though
What about air drying?
Pretty sure I had bubble hair all through high school!! 🤣
keep hearing hair being wet isn't a good thing either. is it better to use a hairdryer at the lowest heat settings or allowing for hair to air dry?
There is one study everyone cites showing blow drying was better but in the study they kept the hairdryer pretty far away (I don’t remember the number) and moved it at a constant rate so the caveat was that blow drying the way most people do would be worse than air drying.
Wondering the same. I think it depends on your hair porosity. I could be wrong though
Does she reply
yes
@@DrDrayzday😂👍🏼
I have a big crush on her ❤
Boiling your hair 😭
