In Crystal I had some common early pokemon I love. Poliwag & geodude often made it onto my early team and sometimes through the whole game. Although I didn't use dunsparce much in Crystal due to the move set being pretty restrictive, I absolutely love them. When gen 6 came out I had dunsparce on my main team, and I was over the moon when I learned that they finally gave dunsparce an evo in gen 9! I couldn't believe how ridiculously slow Sentret was, either! I did a test run up to Violet City and lost roughly 6 minutes from being unable to run from wild Pokémon! Furret, on the other hand, is a nippy little thing who can use everything he has to his advantage!

I've been considering naming the HM Friends, but I'm not sure how I'd want to go about it yet. It'd be nice to give them their own personalities. You can attach the mail to any Pokémon and deliver it - that means you can technically keep Kenya forever!
While playing Pokémon White, I figured out a way to make Furret useful. I used the ability modifier and TM modifier to give him the 'Huge Power' ability and the 'White Smoke's hidden ability, which doubles a pokémon's physical attack stat and prevents enemies from lowering his stats, while giving Furret the moves 'Extreme Speed', a physical flying move, a physical psychic move and a physical fighting move while equipping him with 'Quick Claw.'
If we're counting XD, the first Normal type you get is Teddiursa, which Ursaring is my favorite pokemon of all time. But If we're talking main line games, then Galarian Zigzagoon, Obstagoon is such a beast and that little guy is solid for the early game on it's own.
Wow what an unbelievable run! The way Furrett clawed back the minutes to catch back up, dropped back against blue and came in clutch to win at the end was so enjoyable to watch. Watching that fucking snorlax getting Rolled out to oblivion was particularly satisfying too. Well done mate
Seeing Snorlax's health bar gradually deplete in one shot is always the most satisfying thing in a run, especially with the amount of trouble he sometimes gives me!
Favorite early normal type is Swellow line. First time playing Ruby I was like 8. Didn’t know what adamant meant and swellow and swampert swept everything
My favorite early game Normal type is probably Ratatta due to all the Team Rocket playthroughs I've done, but Zigzagoon is probably a close second. I've loved using it as a starter for Normal runs in Emerald.
Raticate is my favorite, gen 1 and 2 I had a great experience. I would love to see you do a Solo Raticate run, I promise you'll have a great time with it! Awesome video as always!
Rattata is my favourite Pokémon, so I'm very, very excited to run Raticate! I'm saving him for a special occasion, though, as he's such a special Pokémon to me!
Normal is the best type for Johto - you get STAB Headbutt and STAB Return, a badge boost in Attack from Falkner, and a Badge Boost to Normal-type moves from Whitney. Everything lines up perfectly for incredibly quick runs!
Apparently Furret is a little furry danger noodle! I believe Sentret and Zigzagoon are a pair of criminals: Sentret, the sentry, the lookout, and Zigzagoon, the goon, wearing a mask, mugging people and then running away. Maybe alolan Rattata is the Don? "Ima gonna make-a you an offer, you can not-a refuse" while shaking his tiny rat paws in a very italian fashion.
Finally off work and ready for another great video! Super excited for this one! Super easy for someone to do even without hacking in the starters with how quickly you can get it. How are you feeling by the way? I remember you saying something about resting up.
I am much better than I have been, thanks! I overworked myself in September and October, and my energy levels just went through the floor. Just the Battles is being rested for a week, to give me that little bit of extra time to rest up, and give me the energy and time to create Crystal and ScVi content later this month
Pidgeot is my favourite early game normal type, don't ask me why cause idk but child me loved it and it was on every one of my gen 1 and 2 teams. Got so excited when it got a mega evolution
I never had the chance to own Stadium 2 - I'll need to see if it's in any of the second-hand shops nearby, because I will NEED to play the Furret minigame.
my favorite actually is Sentret! soulsilver was my childhood pokémon game. i used to always grab one and name it "cutie" i never really used it, at this point i would just use my starter. i remember feeling so shocked when i learned that it evolved!
My personal favorite early game Normal type is probably Rattata and Raticate due to loving rats and them making great in game glass cannons. Furret, Lilipup, and Zigzagoon are special mentions, especially Galarian Zigzagoon. The only times I've actually used the early game Normal type through the full game was Lilipup in Black and Zigzagoon-G in Sword.
Rats are my favourite animals, and Rattata is my all-time favourite Pokémon, so I am VERY excited to finally do the Rat run. I've never had a Lillipup in a game, but I am definitely going to change that for the next time one's available
I had the video playing on my 2nd screen while playing a game. When I saw you had 0 resets with this little boi after defeating Lance, I watched the whole video from the beginning. Didn't hink this little thing was this strong.
Best HM slave for Johto. Sentret evolves at level 15 unlike rattata that evolves at level 20 whitch means that you can get it fully evolved before beating the 1st gym and it won't be taking exp points from your starter and or geodude. They learn the same HM too except it can also learn whirlpool making it better than raticate
Teddiursa 100% counts! It might be tricky to find one in Crystal, but it's well worth the time investment - even though Corsola was my first upload, Teddiursa was the run which inspired this channel!
You have to be kidding!!! Furret?!?!?!? The champion !!! Haha!! Great run as always sir! Although you have mentioned in the past the greatness of normal types. It makes sense that a Normal type would take the crown!!
I couldn't believe it either! If you'd have asked me who would've taken the top spot from Girafarig, I'd have gone through half the Dex before landing on Furret!
Oh my god… 🥹 I can‘t believe what I just saw! Furret with the crown looks so damn cute! 😍👑 I would have never thought that Furret is going to make it and beat Girafarig since its stats are a bit underwhelming, but - wow, that was a run! Cute, little unsuspecting Furret did it - with just 1 HP! That was really dramatic… 🙈 Thank you, for pulling it off! Furret is one of my favourite Mons ever and I‘m so glad to see that it holds up so well in a Solo challenge run! ☺️ Your challenges are so entertaining to watch and I‘m so excited to see how other Pokémon will do! Especially Kenya! I hope you‘re doing well and wish you all the best!
I couldn't believe it either, I saw the time going through Johto and realised I was only slightly slower than Miltank, AND I had Amnesia to let me set up against Red! I was still shocked that I didn't lose a lot of time in Kanto and actually got the victory with 1HP! I'm up and down with my energy levels at the moment, but I could always be feeling worse. I hope you're doing well!
OMG squidgy what a run!!! Turret is one of the most underrated Pokemon and i just personally love it so much lol, so much so that i built one in POGO for go battle league 😁. Keep up the amazing content can't wait to see who's next ???
Thanks, Matthew! I'm hoping people will like my choice of Pokémon for Saturday's run, I've started routing this evening and it looks like it could be very interesting.
Its not surprising Furret does so well, there are 2 things that are OP in gen 2 in game, Normal types and the elemental punches, Furret is so far the first Pokemon you've used that has both of those things
So, prediction! It's very similar to Miltank, but trading a bit of bulk for more moves! And, hey, it coincidentally even has access to the infamous Defense Curl + Rollout combo. Not only that, but you've got Shadow Ball, all the elemental punches, Surf, Dig, as well as STAB Return and Headbutt. However, as is expected with many early-game Normal types, Furret may have a great movepool, but its stats leave a bit to be desired. Due to its low special attack, any special moves you have on your movepool will be only useful for specific battles. Its best, staple attacking moves will be physical, consisting of moves like Return, Headbutt, Shadow Ball, Rollout, etc. And with its somewhat limited attack stat, you're going to be relying on high base power moves like Return and Rollout to get much done. Of course, Miltank did incredibly well despite not having the best stats in the world. With Furret's even better movepool, it's hard to not see it getting a top placement. Having access to Fire Punch and Dig means Jasmine won't be too bad since her Steelix has awful special defense vs. Fire Punch, and her Magnemite are 4x weak to Dig. And Rollout means you have an answer to Lance the Liar as well as Red. And being a pure Normal type, not many trainers threaten it. Sure, Chuck can threaten with Dynamic Punch, but he needs to set up with Mind Reader to guarantee he'll land it, and you've got Thunder Punch. I'm not sure Bruno even threatens Furret since its experience group means it will be pretty overleveled by the time you fight him. Maybe Morty or Karen might be annoying? I look forward to watching this! -- Result: Furret absolutely stole 1st place, and it didn't even need any Rare Candies, although I doubt they would have made a major difference. I guess versus Red with rare candies, Furret would've had a higher chance of surviving a few hits that nearly KO'd it, but that's it. All those unlucky Psychic crits from Espeon would have still done massive damage, and Thunder would have still paralyzed. You simply can't make yourself less unlucky by leveling up. I didn't think Blue would be that tough, but I always forget he's actually the only Kanto gym leader that has a good team, being that his team is very balanced (although sadly weaker than his Gen 1 team). I also always forget Koga because I forget he has a really really annoying, bulky Foretress that likes to blow up. When I was watching your fight against Morty, I was wondering if you should've used HP Ground, but then when I saw your fight against Red where Furret had to survive at 1 HP, I realized picking HP Ground, while it would have saved one turn against Morty, would have also meant you would've reset against Red, possibly costing Furret 1st place, since HP Dark is the only Hidden Power that lets you have perfect stats. So, good call on using HP Dark! As for the question, my favorite early-game normal type would have to be a tie between Furret and Minccino! I love the fuzzy noodle friend, but Minccino is a cute rodent friend, too. Gen 5 had two Normal type rodents obtainable early game - Minccino and Patrat - and Patrat is technically the "true" early game rodent since it's found the earliest and has a standard level-up evolution rather than a stone evolution, but I definitely love the chinchilla. Patrat's pretty adorable, too, though.
Furret was a perfect storm of everything going right in a run - it was my third run of the night, so I was very warmed up and played very well, Morty was less painful than expected, the punching moves gave excellent coverage, and Red was the luckiest battle I have had in a very long time! I've got a soft spot for Minccino and Cinccino, even if I find them VERY difficult to spell! I just wish they were more prominent!
@@Squidgy Aaa, I'm glad! Instant respect! Minccino had an appearance in a recent special animation that revolved around Slugma but that was it. Speaking of Red luck, I happened to do a Typhlosion playthrough on Crystal last night, and everything went so well UNTIL Red where I had to scrap its moveset for a Rollout/Curse set (I forgot Defense Curl! Mt. Mortar is sooooo out of the way) I'm guessing you'll eventually give the three Johto starters an attempt each someday. I look forward to them, but I have a feeling I know which one will come out on top (and it's sadly not the water-type one in my avatar). With how good your run went, I look forward to seeing even more!
From watching 3 different channels doing these solo runs, Mewtwo is absolutely broken in Gen 1. 154 Special, starts with Psychic at lvl1 and Psychic gets STAB.
I'm feeling a lot better now, thanks, Mike! I overdid it in September and early October, and my energy levels suffered as a result. I'm resting Just the Battles this week, though, and that should give me the time I need to get my voice back to full fitness, and have the energy and motivation to do Crystal and ScVi content later this month!
Honestly Furret is the best early game normal type. At least in its debut generation. It evolves at level 15 into a 419 BST monster before the second gym and can learn some sort of coverage move for every type.
If you get past the slow speed of Sentret, then you are rewarded with a phenomenal Pokémon for Gen 2! It's literally just the first 10 levels which are a pain!
Squidgy, I've got a bit of a longer challenge for you, if it's within your wheelhouse: Gen1 Vs Gen2 legendaries through crystal. So, cats and birds Vs dogs and birds (I know they're beasts, but it looks cleaner). The caviat being that no single Pokémon can be ±5 levels of another in your party. Not sure how this would be achieved, as starting with a full team of 5 would be overpowered. Possibly assign each a side of a die, and gift yourself one after each gym leader to the level of the gym trainers, or some other method of balancing the team?
This is an INCREDIBLY interesting idea, and something which I think would be suited to a live stream to test out a few different ways to get it working. It's gone in my notebook and I'll try and figure out a couple of different pilot runs for the new year!
Side note, I feel like you could have saved time overall by not getting the leftovers especially since the recovery costs frames and using ice punch and thunder punch for brock. Ferret really surprised me though! Side side note, I would love to see a run of Arcanine
Arcanine, you say? That's coming very, very, very soon! Leftovers were probably slightly slower for Brock, but I was on such a good pace and wanted to play it incredibly safe - I didn't want another run where I choked right at the end!
Dam furret How on earth did you pull out this run I expected it would take some Ace in the base stat department to top girafarig But rollout defense curl OP OP
I have *no* idea how I managed to beat Girafarig with Furret; it was a combination of sheer luck, great coverage, and the best typing for a Gen 2 run, I guess!
Wobbuffet springs to mind, but I reckon I could get through Rival 2 at a very high level. I'm sure there'll be one which surprises me, but there aren't any off the top of my head.
I guess it depends how “early” you consider, but I liked Clefairy a lot, it seemed like a really mysterious Pokémon and metronome was always a quirky kinda move, it might be useless, it might be OP but it was fun nonetheless.
I always feel like Clefairy gets overlooked, because it's such an uncommon encounter - Metronome is super fun to use, and Clefairy's learnset is absolutely massive!
I would have never guessed that it would top the leaderboard after Miltank and Tauros didn't do it, but never sleep on that normal type STAB/Bow/Return combo I'm basic so the answer to your question is Bidoof

@@Squidgy that was so epic! Loved it, i was in total shock!
Rattata is my favourite Pokémon, so you have excellent taste!
I like the BIbarrel and digersby lines because they use some unique design and have interesting typing's!
I just realized that now 7 of the top 10 are now normal types
Normal is the best type for Johto - you get STAB Headbutt and STAB Return, a badge boost in Attack from Falkner, and a Badge Boost to Normal-type moves from Whitney. Everything lines up perfectly for incredibly quick runs!
i was not expecting that outcome
Good run for the ferret, I knew it'd do well. Good show Sir
YOOOOOO such great video, I remember doing this challenge about 2 years ago and it was fun
This is some EXCELLENT lore that I'm going to try and incorporate into future videos!
Incredible as always!
Man loved Furrets mini game on Pokémon Stadium 2!!
I never had the chance to own Stadium 2 - I'll need to see if it's in any of the second-hand shops nearby, because I will NEED to play the Furret minigame.
Going back sentret was the only shiny I encountered and caught, was kinda buzzing ha
Amazing as always! Sentret and Furret are my favorite early game normal types. (Also shoutout to lilipup for being cute asf)
I appreciate this video, I love Furret in Gen 2
my favorite actually is Sentret! soulsilver was my childhood pokémon game. i used to always grab one and name it "cutie" i never really used it, at this point i would just use my starter. i remember feeling so shocked when i learned that it evolved!
Sentret is one of my all-time favourite Pokémon! It's very, very adorable, and is fairly strong for an early-game Pokémon!
Way to go, Furret!! The Normal types are supreme in Gen 2!
*Accumula town theme starts to play in the background*
That's gonna be stuck in my head for the next month now! :D
My favorite early rodent is Sentret. Had a great experience with a Furret my first play of Silver. Return, Shadow Ball, Dynamic Punch and Ice Punch.
That's an excellent choice of moves, and I think would deal a huge amount of damage to pretty much any Pokémon!
@@Squidgy Exactly
I did NOT see that time coming. Holy poop!
We have entered the days of rodent supremacy
Now we understand where did the Furret walk to:
It was the number 1 podium
I should have delayed this video until the one-year anniversary of BDSP, so I could've made a proper Furret Walk reference!
I remember loving using furret. Just a silly lil guy he is!
Way to go Furret I wouldn't have bet on it getting such a great time
What??? Never thought that would be possible!
I had the video playing on my 2nd screen while playing a game. When I saw you had 0 resets with this little boi after defeating Lance, I watched the whole video from the beginning. Didn't hink this little thing was this strong.
Neither did I! I had put Furret down for a 2:30:00-3:00:00 run, but everything just clicked perfectly!
Does Teddiursa count? I know it's only really accessible in Crystal early on (and a bitch to get in too) but it's always been a favorite of mine.
@@Squidgy wow that is amazing!!
@@Squidgy I am doing a Delibird run.... Spoilers... It's very very difficult. Too much RNG with present. :-(
Oh my god… 🥹
I can‘t believe what I just saw!
Furret with the crown looks so damn cute! 😍👑
I would have never thought that Furret is going to make it and beat Girafarig since its stats are a bit underwhelming, but - wow, that was a run! Cute, little unsuspecting Furret did it - with just 1 HP! That was really dramatic… 🙈
Thank you, for pulling it off!
Furret is one of my favourite Mons ever and I‘m so glad to see that it holds up so well in a Solo challenge run! ☺️
Your challenges are so entertaining to watch and I‘m so excited to see how other Pokémon will do!
I love the Stoutland line!
Stoutland's adorable and bulky! You have excellent taste there!
Dunsparce is my all time favorite pokemon and they are an early game encounter in gen 2
Dunsparce is an absolute godsend in a Gen 2 Nuzlocke! It's an excellent choice as a favourite Pokémon!
Wow this was a great run! Didn’t expect this. Maybe I should have used it more lol
Furret was a pleasure to work with, I'd highly recommend having one on your team, if you get the opportunity!
Sentret is my favourite early normal rodent. By far the cutest, and defensive ratata works better than offensive OG rat I reckon
Congrats Furret. Cute and packs a punch., what's not to love.
The ferret has done it! Amazing and could have been even faster! Lets see how long the new reign lasts.
Furret's run surprised the heck out of me, it took top spot out of nowhere!
--
Result: Furret absolutely stole 1st place, and it didn't even need any Rare Candies, although I doubt they would have made a major difference.
Mt. Mortar is sooooo out of the way)
I'm guessing you'll eventually give the three Johto starters an attempt each someday. I look forward to them, but I have a feeling I know which one will come out on top (and it's sadly not the water-type one in my avatar). With how good your run went, I look forward to seeing even more!
Johto starters? Less than 2 weeks away!
@@Squidgy Yasssss
Wow! I didn't expect Furret to be this good 😲
Now we need to see what Raticate can do to compare the 2.
Raticate is being saved for a special occasion, as Rattata is my all-time favourite Pokémon!
From watching 3 different channels doing these solo runs, Mewtwo is absolutely broken in Gen 1. 154 Special, starts with Psychic at lvl1 and Psychic gets STAB.
Furret is awesome...its fast has a great moveset nd its bulkier then some people think! Great run!
Crazy for Furret to be first in anything, never would've thought of it. No one gives Furret a chance
Furret is incredibly overlooked, but it looks like Gen 2 is definitely the best place to run one!
Squidgy, I've got a bit of a longer challenge for you, if it's within your wheelhouse:
Gen1 Vs Gen2 legendaries through crystal.
@@Squidgy who's awesome? You're fxcking awesome!
I love Furret, and your content 😊
Favourite Pokémon is Arcanine by far
Side note, I feel like you could have saved time overall by not getting the leftovers especially since the recovery costs frames and using ice punch and thunder punch for brock. Ferret really surprised me though! Side side note, I would love to see a run of Arcanine
Arcanine, you say? That's coming very, very, very soon!
Leftovers were probably slightly slower for Brock, but I was on such a good pace and wanted to play it incredibly safe - I didn't want another run where I choked right at the end!
What are the odds of that happening, lol. Before some PokeMath master come up with the answer I need to say I wasn't being literal. Great video
my last playthrough of gold i had furret on my team and he was op
Very surprising with Furrent!! All the swearing 🤬 paid off!!! Great vid!!
Thanks, Andre!
Dam furret
How on earth did you pull out this run
I expected it would take some Ace in the base stat department to top girafarig
But rollout defense curl OP OP
I have *no* idea how I managed to beat Girafarig with Furret; it was a combination of sheer luck, great coverage, and the best typing for a Gen 2 run, I guess!
Are there any pokemon that you want to run but can't because they have no way of hitting the post gym 2 rival fight?
Wobbuffet springs to mind, but I reckon I could get through Rival 2 at a very high level. I'm sure there'll be one which surprises me, but there aren't any off the top of my head.
Fact: i used furret the whole game in all the generations that he was in. Furret walcc
Mine is probably bidoof as my favorite early normal type
Furret is my early normal fave
nah he's pulling a Scott venomoth on us. furret is a ground type. the anime said so
Ayy Bird Keeper Lance. Because ALL his pokemon are flying type.
My favorite early route normal would be Pikipek unless the birds don't count, then it's Lillipup
You have excellent choice! Pikipek is an amazing bird, and Lillipup is just all-round fantastic
This should be a cake walcc
Early gens: pidgeot
Overall: obstagoon
I would have never guessed that it would top the leaderboard after Miltank and Tauros didn't do it, but never sleep on that normal type STAB/Bow/Return combo
I'm basic so the answer to your question is Bidoof
I like Bidoof - especially in Legends Arceus where they have so much personality!
I can honestly say I've never used this pokemon but belly drum linoone though.
Belly Drum Furret would be broken in Gen 2 - there's a glitch which means you'll still get a 2x Attack buff if Belly Drum fails!
@@Squidgy wow that's busted didn't know that.
However NONE of its LV up moves can hit the Ghost types so its forced to learn a TM move that can.
What a little beast!!!
I approve this message.
