How Daniel Radcliffe Pulled Off A Hollywood Magic Trick

  • Harry Potter is without a doubt the most famous character Daniel Radcliffe has portrayed in his long career in Hollywood. Though unlike a lot of child actors that are cast in iconic roles, Daniel Radcliffe was able to lift himself out of the Harry Potter image and explore a truly weird and amazing career. Through Swiss Army Man, Weird: The Al Yankovic Story, Miracle Works and so much more, Daniel Radcliffe has shown his affinity for the weird and strange. Though he'll still always be remembered for his iconic portrayal of The Boy Who Lived.

My take has always been: Radcliffe has earned so much money from the Potter franchise, and had enough foresight and guidance not to blow it all or become another child star burnout. And thus had the financial freedom as an adult to just take whatever acting roles he fancied and never had to worry about the financial viability of many of the wonderfully bizarre films he's done since.

To me, one of the most interesting things about the HP franchise is watching Radcliffe develop from child star to genuine actor. He starts as a fairly typical inexperienced kid cast for his look and natural charm, and slowly develops with each film until the only thing holding him back is the limitations of the role he's playing. Once he was free to take on meatier roles, his true ability and range quickly became apparent.

It helps to remember that the Potter films included a rich cast of established British character actors, who each had wide and varied careers. You can see the children, as they grow up on screen, also grow in skill. No doubt they got a lot of advice from their experienced peers, and one of the biggest pieces of advice would have been "do different things, don't let yourself be typecast".

I'm guessing it was due to several people staying in their life helping them cope with the sudden fame, such as Alan Rickman. They had some people more consistently in their lives unlike other child actors. If I recall as well, Radcliffe's parents didn't even want him in films, so parents who care more about their kid than money and fame probably helps as well.

Daniel was given access to fame at a very young age and I think that gives a person a unique perspective on life, on what can and cannot be accomplished, and the toll that takes on a person. He’s been very open about his drinking during the last half of the potter franchise and how he had to find things that anchored him. I think that’s why he’s chosen the project that he has. Not only wanting to challenge his acting but to truly care and not become a mascot where there are impossible expectations. I’ve very happy that he was able to survive childhood stardom and lean into his wacky freak side 🤣👏🏻

He got better, i'll give him that. I never rated his acting much as Harry Potter tbh. He had exactly two emotional states: ''i'm nervous and i'm quiet'' and ''i'm distressed and i'm shouting''. He was very lucky that those films would have sold regardless. But like I say, he has come a long, long way since then.

    • @r0dders
      @r0dders 8 місяців тому +18

To be honest, to me Harry has always been like that even in the books, though, granted, I read them when I was a child. I just thought that other characters had more personality, but I just justified it by realizing that Harry was a main character and, in-universe, he was a timid and shy boy who has never seen a light in his life and had to repress his emotions, which led to him not being able to control them when he felt particularly strong ones. Anyway, all of this is to say that I agree with you!
Still, the role most likely stuck to Radcliffe just because of people visually associating him with HP, not necessarily because he was ground-breaking in portraying him. And I'm glad that he wasn't too intimidated by it and did not allow this role to control him for his entire career.

Many people seem to forget that Radcliffe had already begun his acting career before the Harry Potter franchise. In 1999 he was cast as the young David Copperfield in a two-part BBC 1 adaptation of the book, and in 2001 he appeared, in a small role, in The Tailor of Panama, an adaptation of the original 1996 spy novel written by John le Carré. Apparently Chris Columbus (Dir. Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone) had seen Radcliffe in David Copperfield and had decided that he would be perfect for the role of Harry Potter.

I totally forgot about "The Woman in Black!"
That movie was surprisingly good, and it was the first time I saw Radcliffe in a serious role outside of Harry Potter. It's been so long that I've forgotten most of that movie, but there's one scene that literally gave me goosebumps watching in theaters. From that point on, I've always been interested in Radcliffe's work & have a ton of respect for what he does.
On the flipside, it wouldn't hurt to take on a TINY bit of more "normal" roles & not just the chaotic/absurd stuff 😅

I love Daniel Radcliffe so much. He seems like a genuinely nice dude and he is one of the few people in the industry who can get me to check out a film solely because he is in it. And not only because he is a great actor but especially because he chooses such interesting and varied projects to work on that most of the time it's at least work checking out (and Swiss Army Man is one of my favorite movies ever and I probably wouldn't have watched it if it wasn't for Radcliffe)

Big part of this is that Daniel was clearly genuinely in love with cinema - even when he by was filming the 3rd HP movie he would talk in interviews about w living movies like Y Tu Mama Tambien - despite it being wildly age inappropriate - which showed that he was a budding cinefile.
HP gave him the blank cheque to do whatever he wanted because he didn’t need to worry so much about the money in the early years
Even from that young age he had an appreciation for interesting artistic statements - a big part of what separated his child star experience from many others (aside from reasonable family grounding and support - I imagine not needing to financially support his entire family also played a massive role in it)

I would highly recommend chasing down his Rom Com, "What If" (also called "The F Word"). It's almost an anti-Rom Com, taking on the genre's ickiest tropes in a thoughtful way. Radcliffe is hilarious and charming and sympathetic. He and Zoe Kazan have phenomenal chemistry (more than Kazan and Nanjiani in The Bog Sick). Adam Driver plays his chaotic best friend and the two of them are utterly hilarious together. It's a movie that went totally off the radar and it's wonderful

THIS is my ideal acting career. Yes, I know people who'd say "I want to be a b-tier bit actor, have fun, not get seen." But I'd just love to be in a couple blockbusters, then later on look completely different and be in a bunch of wild movies that I do actually want to be successful and would love if they incidentally ended up being blockbusters but don't need to be. Daniel Radcliffe as the next movie villian. Or maybe that's played out, and having him as a more ground to earth hero or side character would be interesting to him.

To a lot of people's surprise Daniel is not only a talented young actor who started acting on a high level at very young age (that'll make ya grow up fast and get good at it) but he is a passionate actor who loves what he does for a living and never takes it for granted. Nothing short of absolutely commendable of someone who does not need the money and most certainly did not need the fame, and that sadly is something that seems to be more and more rare by the day.
