@mcchickenz I agreed that dealership could mark it up a fraction but not charge someone a used vehicle for double the price of a new one. That's the stuff that American Greed needs to report.
Allowed? MSRP stands for manufacturer's suggested retail price, and are made under the assumption that supply chains aren't fubar. Manufacturer sales would only result in manufacturers marking up prices or there being no supply. The latter results in people reselling at even more inflated prices, or as the economically illiterate call it, scalping.
I know right. There,s corona so wear a mask, estate prices go up, car prices go up, locally because of electricity per hour price going up theres also food electricity and food prices. One thing that doesnt go up is our salary. I wanna laugh and also cry XD
@@mangotail6808 When you base your society around driving absurd distances to get to and from your home in the suburbs while pursuing a policy heavily dependant on getting gas into your car, then don't be surprised when living expenses skyrocket. It doesn't cost much to stick solar panels on your rooftop, make public transportation and bicycling safe for commuters, and rezone the suburbs so you can walk to your local grocery store instead of driving everywhere. I say let car prices go way up. Let the market decide.
To anyone buying a new/used car, don't be afraid to get up and walk away at the dealership if you don't like the price. I used to sell new/used cars for a living, and recently my wife wanted a 2021 Rav4 Prime, which is a very hard car to get right now. The dealer tried to tack on an extra $5000 once we sat down and drew up the papers, and as soon as I saw the extra charge, we got up and started to walk out. The manager got butthurt that we didn't even try to negotiate, and I told him to knock off the 5g's or we were leaving, and he did. The point I'm trying to make, is they will try to gouge you, but it's up to you to get the price to where you want it. Don't be afraid to go elsewhere.
Right? everyone here acting like these cars are cancer medication. No one is forcing you to pay 50% to 100% over sticker. Just walk away. Prices will go back down. Wait a couple of years and you can own a Bronco for under sticker price. Guarantee it.

Bullshit. All dealers around me just don’t have cars. Next time you will buy a car bellow a sticker price will be after the sticker price get 2x increase.
People were selling overpriced “essential” items online and that was illegal immediately. Dealers have been ripping people off most of the time yet nothing has been done about it.
Ironically theres evidence that scalping essential items can actual help in emergencies. Like after a hurricane a lot of people will buy generators and other items in areas far away and drive them to the affected areas to collect on the huge markup. They actually contribute to the relief effort. The problem these days is with online shopping. People will buy hot items in bulk, raise the price, and mail them to you with the same shipping service the manufacturer used to ship it to them. Providing no additional value to the economy.
I remember 5 years ago thinking it was insane that pickup trucks were selling for over $50K. I didn't see this coming. Since most people don't have $100k sitting around to buy a vehicle, I assume they will be slowly going bankrupt on time payments.
@@yutaka1488 that is no different from the mainland my dude. 2009's with 250K miles going for over $50K near army bases now. people are willing to pay for them.
when crash hits and everything resets all the idiots that purchased cars and homes at height of the market will be playing victim and begging for a bailout
As much as I hate it that's natural supply and demand. Don't wanna pay that much don't buy it. As more are made those prices will drop and you'll be able to get them at a steal of a price.
It's basic supply and demand. I work for an auto group and we have a supply issue (as do all the dealers around us). If we sell all of our vehicles below MSRP, WAY below the market, we have empty lots and OEM's won't be able to resupply us. Not to mention our sales people who rely on their jobs to support families, or just live, won't have anything to sell. Maybe that means we should sell all of our new stuff at a low price, and just focus on used inventory. Well, in order to get used inventory, you either buy from auction (which has skyrocketed) or you buy from your customer base (or technically buy from other dealers, but you get the point). If I can't put them in something new because I priced too low and all my vehicles are gone, then I would just be 1-for-1 swapping all my used vehicles until I'm left with vehicles nobody wants to trade for. On top of that, half the customers won't want to sell their vehicles to us because for our prices to be low, we have to buy low. Other dealers will buy the same vehicle for a lot more, because they can sell it for a lot more. Because of competition in the market and basic supply and demand, our prices have to remain high. That is not to say, we haven't been super competitive. If undercutting the dealership down the road by a few grand is an option to get a sale, we take it. Where other dealers might charge you a few grand over sticker for a vehicle order, we'll order your vehicle for MSRP (unless it's something special, like a raptor, or corvette which you only get a certain number of allocations of).
@@Tuv0x all the extra crap is ridiculous. the window tint, the "paint protection". all the stuff that adds money to the pockets of the dealership. I bought a 2020 Ridgeline for $32,500 last year. That vehicle is now valued at $45,000. Never in my life have I purchased a vehicle and had it appreciate in value. Crazy.
We need to start calling these dealerships out. Leave 1 star reviews on all dealerships that are price scalping . I know it doesn’t sound like much , but creating awareness will hopefully put a dampener to what’s going on
Some price increase is acceptable when supply is short, but 50%+ is in no way acceptable. The dealers that are scalping should be called out like you said.
As someone whos currently shoppng for a used car, I feel this pain on such a deep level. In my area, most used cars are selling for more than they were worth new off the lot.
Yep just bought a 2020 4Runner with 24k for over MSRP. But hey, wife needed a bigger vehicle, and if im going to over pay I'm going to over pay for something that lasts.
I bought my 2019 f150 new for 12k under msrp at the end of 2019. It is currently worth about 8-10k more than I paid for it. There's no way I'd pay that much for a used truck, let alone pay over msrp for a new one. The current new and used car market is insane. I hope that prices come back down soon. Its definitely a bubble, due to short supply and high demand. I'm not selling my truck any time soon, either way. It sucks for anyone that can't wait to ride out the shortage. Car, truck and gas prices need to go back to 2019.

GM just recently announced they are coming down hard on Dealerships that are selling the C8 above MSRP by taking away their allocations for future vehicles. Good for GM.

The spread of prices is absolutely insane, I’ve seen a difference of MSRP to double it. Specifically, RAV4 Primes are MSRP in Portland (and most car brands still are there, god bless ‘em) while being over $80k in Oakland CA. The difference? Portland is back ordered for as much as 6+ months with no guarantees, Oakland has stock and you can drive off same day. I got a Lexus sedan in Portland because I needed something pretty fast and couldn’t handle a Highlander for parking in Seattle while still being MSRP.
I had to buy a car because i needed one asap to be able to work. In my country the price of cars went up 2-3 times in some cases. I paid around 3k $ for a used Ford focus 2008 which 3 years ago was worth around 1.5k$ ( even though it was younger and better condition obviously). Drove 100 km with it and started noticing engine noises which were made basically by a destroyed crankshaft that needed repair, so basically I need to swap the engine now... Sometimes I feel this world is designed to just fuck you out of every cent. And before you say that losing 3k$ is not horrible in my country if you make 1.5k $ you're are way above average earner but still inflation is so high that you cannot rent a flat for that wtf

Reminds me when I work at Toyota when the Supra came out. The first Supra we got cost $55k since is a Launch Edition, but my dealer put a "addition cost* on the price paper and says $100k. So the car was selling for $155k. And it sold in a couple of days by a tuning company. Insane how much people with money will pay. We might make fun of dealerships increasing prices but the true clowns are the people buy those cars at those prices.
You had to work in Texas or Florida. I also sold Toyotas and remember four Supras being bought by a tuning company from multiple dealers. If I remember correctly, dude did a burnout and wrecked one of the cars in the dealer’s lot.
The tuning company needed the car for R&D so probably got to write off a large portion of its cost. If somebody came in to buy one for personal use, yeah that would be ridiculous.

Your frustration is completely justified and understandable, but here are a few examples of services a dealership provides: Just new vehicles specifically: 1. Inspection of transport - repair of potential transport damage (scratches, broken parts, dents, etc.) 2. Pre delivery inspection and mechanical checks - removing shipping material for mechanical components (suspension blocks, ship mode, fluid checks, safety equipment checks, etc. - just to name a few things) - I've seen cars some in with missing parts, completely broken mechanical components, no fluids (oil, etc.), and all kinds of horrors. 3. Cleanup - vehicles don't often arrive clean unless you're buying a very high end product. 4. Recalls. 5. Dealing with your trade-in - believe it or not, most people don't trade in vehicles that are in great condition and require little to no reconditioning. 6. Comparing financing with multiple lenders to get you the best rate possible - yes I'm aware there is often a markup for providing the service. 7. Making sure you are aware of all rebates available from the manufacturer. Etc. A lot of the inner working of a dealership aren't understood by most people, so I'm just trying to give a little insight as to what actually happens. Hopefully that doesn't come off the wrong way. Cheers.
At the Prescott Arizona Toyota a 29 year old salesman told me prices are high because he needs to feed his family can you believe that? Too funny how this criminal behavior is allowed so he can 'feed his family'. A buyer also has a family to feed. Too comical...

Yup, ran into this when I was purchasing my 2021 Harley Davidson Panamerica. The mark up the stealerships were charging was ridiculous. I went to the 3 dealers nearest me and walked out laughing each time. Their long term vision was just so completely short sighted, not realizing that the ill will they were generating from the public was reflecting badly on not only on their dealership, but on harley it self, not to mention snuffing much of the excitement around the new model. I lit all three of the dealerships up on social media and ended up getting a call from Harley's corporate customer service. They put me in contact with Hale's Harley Davidson in Mansfield who actually honor MSRP and even gave me a discount on all the accessories I wanted, needless to say I'm telling everyone I know to go to THAT dealer instead of the ones in Cincinnati. Now none of the bikers I ride with are going to do business with those dealers ever again, that's 100+ lost potential sales just so they could make a little extra on the one or two allotted PanAms they got. The mark up practices of dealerships are what killed the Focus RS for one, second the practice is gaining more than normal negative press with the general public. All it's going to take is a politician choosing this as their "Thing I'm Going To Save You From" and poof, all the protections to the dealership model are gone, people vote on things that don't actually impact them all the time. The only thing I can say is...do your research before you buy. Know what it is you want before going to a dealership. Know what dealership fees to are bogus and which one's are necessary. For example never pay for a vehicle transport on a used car that is already physically on the lot. Thankfully, there are companies you can trust and I'm living proof of that. I just bought a yellow and black 2017 Dodge Challenger RT+P (every option) with 61,000 miles, 3 year 150,000 mile warranty for 21,500 tax, tag, title included. Thank you Carmax.

Bob Bell was trying to charge me $14,000 for an engine replacement (the labor rates were unreasonably high and the replacement motor was quoted at $8100 itself according to them), or I could trade my car in... Hmm. Kia Consumer Affairs happily replaced the motor and paid for my rental, as per my warranty. The dealership wanted to rip me off and force me into a trade in.
@@jamessteven526 that makes no sense. They get paid to do the work, and probably would have made more on an engine job then a car sale. I actually work at a Kia Dealership in North Texas. Thankfully our stores are not doing these ridiculous mark ups. The only thing we do is have a few packages that people have to select which the top one is right under $2000 but other that that were MSRP + TT&L. We absolutely can’t stomach the idea of asking for these mark-ups as our owner would lose his mind. We sell so much because of our policy against those massive mark-ups.

Just keep a list, people. Remember all the “community-focused” dealers who now only care about how much than can scalp their community. Even when prices fall and they try to call remember their greed and go somewhere else.
See: state “no gouging law” during emergency(covid) , 40ish states have them (vary for products & services ) but often covers : lumber, cars , gas , sanitary products , food . Based on prices prior to emergency and typically limited to 10-15% per year
i want to blame these dealerships as much as you, but a lot of these places have been desperate for inventory. the supply issues going on for the past year is affecting nearly EVERY industry. so if lots can't get hardly any vehicles to sell, they are forced to raise the prices on what they do get.
The funny thing is, the sales people at the dealerships are up on Facebook essentially trying to explain away why car prices are being marked up $10,000 plus over manufacture suggested price. What people don’t understand is, without customers… They make no money. If you’re going to buy something, buy something directly from a local seller and not a dealership. Even if it has a few issues that need fixed, you’re going to save money over what these dealers are charging. If you don’t want to do that, simply get the car you have fixed and wait till the market collapses. Just think what happens if the market just goes back to normal… that car you bought is now worth that less you paid over sticker value, even if it’s a one or two year old model. I’m surprised that banks are even giving the loans out knowing that these vehicles values are going to collapse as the market normalizes. I’d imagine at least some of them are requiring quite a bit more for down payment. As, you have to wonder how many people are going to default purposely. Just to get out from under the mountain of debt that I created by buying a car in this current market.

Manufactures have been "scolding" dealerships for years. I'm all for making money but what the ships are doing is incredibly gross. I sold Mopar for years. When the Demon came out it was insane.
Manufacturers aren't scolding dealerships, there was a report in AutoTrader about 2 weeks ago talking about how manufacturers are rethinking their inventory practices. Meaning they most likely are not going to saturate the market with inventory like they were before. Instead of them investing so much capital to manufacture a ton of units, they're going to manufacture less vehicles so dealerships can continue to capitalize on gross profit as well as manufacturers not having to worry about thousands and thousands of unsold units sitting on dealership lots aging and then having to invest more capital in rebates and incentives to help dealerships sell their cars

25 year importation law went into effect Bc dealerships losing sales. This should be a great way to have that rule overturned with all the crazy market adjustments. Shouldn’t be a law if they are allowed markups on new cars.
Most dealerships are privately owned so manufactures do set the price, your local dealership marks them up. The manufactures fought for the law not the local dealerships, want it to change? Try getting more people to stop paying for it. If they stopped buying it they would have to come down.

Time to legislate dealerships out of the picture and go to direct sales from the manufacturer. Cut out the middle man completely, dealers need to compete against oems for sales.
Never going to happen...go research how the dealer finances their inventory. The manufacturers aren’t interested in doing that (exclusive of the state by state dealers laws).

I’m so happy y’all are calling this out, I have been trying to get a Bronco for 6 months and every dealer wants at least a 20k mark up, and I ordered a truck and it got delayed over a year now. It’s nuts
I work at a dealer and people are buying Broncos at msrp and selling them back to the dealership (us) for $10k-$15k over sticker then we are wholesaling them at action (to other dealers) for an additional $10k-$20k over that and then they are selling them at an additional profit. This is a product of high demand and low supply, not dealer greed. This is happening several times a month consumers are driving up the prices not dealers. The reality is I believe the dollar is weak and this is just the new norm as we will see hyper inflation.

Part of this is manufacturers too. The dealer takes the car into inventory for a factory price and they provide an msrp. BUT the dealer can of course charge more to make a profit but you can talk them down to msrp, but any features they add or work completed on the car gets added to the price. If a used car comes in needing an oil change or new tires, that cost gets handed down to the customer even if they didn’t request it.

Everything will be shown so therefore if you happen to see something that you did not agree to do not buy. If they have window tint for $2,000, that's not a good thing to buy. As much as I hate it that's natural supply and demand. Don't wanna pay that much don't buy it. As more are made those prices will drop and you'll be able to get them at a steal of a price.
Can't believe people are stupid enough to pay the mark ups
We need to make a website that lists every dealer that charges over MSRP. Never forget them, blacklist for life.
Check the TFL channel, subscribers have been putting lists of dealers that sell at MSRP and above….
I'm trying to order a new car right now and I've told them I don't want the extra crap and they said too bad.

We should be able to buy directly from the manufacturers. The dealerships are just useless middlemen that the government forces you to go through.
So you like paying sticker?
or cash? well that could be an option but no for all people
Your frustration is completely justified and understandable, but here are a few examples of services a dealership provides:
Just new vehicles specifically:
1. Inspection of transport - repair of potential transport damage (scratches, broken parts, dents, etc.)
Cheers.

@@douglasboyle6544 did it work?
@@ryanrodriguez1234 Pretty much. They were willing to sell at MSRP since I was a returning customer and was trading in a mint very low mileage vehicle that they were, in turn, able to sell at its original MSRP. The Market is messed up but we both got what we wanted.
Great job using the market! Im not sure if I have an issue with dealers selling their vehicles at market prices. Otherwise they would just be immediately scalped up and sold by resellers on the used market. Im happy the dealers are trying yo prevent that.
@@douglasboyle6544 trading in a mint low mileage car should not get you down to just MSRP, I hate this market we're in.

I don't think that's how supply and demand works.
Dealerships really aren't suffering. The lack of inventory is offset by the margins. Everyone I know in the industry is making more money than ever
@@OdinsDemon Yepp, when I sold cars I made decent money but it was brutal sometimes trying to get sales or working 12+ hour shifts and 6 days to make it. Now they are working 8 hour days with weekends off, selling cars that are 6 months from being built, and selling for over msrp without much of a fight because its the same all over. Some of the people I know still in the business are loving life right now.
I mean I get where you are coming from but as a salesman it’s our lively hood too right
It's not that they can't offer directed buy it's more that's illegal. Dealerships have been lobbying Congressmen for years to stop stuff like that
The only thing I can say is...do your research before you buy.

@@ai4px Electric doesn't work for everyone. It wont work for me, I know that.
Wait until you need that car fixed FOR FREE under the warranty. Trust me, the manufacturer doesn't want to repair a thing. That's the dealership advocating on the customer's behalf.
@@drock9888 not true. My 2015 Kia Optima had an engine failure (along with the 1.5 million others) and Bob Bell Kia off Essex told me warranty wouldn't cover it. I called Kia Consumer affairs, and turns out the dealership never submitted any work orders. I took it to a Hyundai dealership a few miles away, and they replaced the engine under warranty.
I mean seriously, do you think they were going to make $14k on you trading your junk car in? That warranty job is basically pure profit.
I appreciate your anecdotal story, but if manufacturers start selling direct to consumer they will not stand behind their products like they do now, because they won’t have to.
I actually work at a Kia Dealership in North Texas. Thankfully our stores are not doing these ridiculous mark ups. The only thing we do is have a few packages that people have to select which the top one is right under $2000 but other that that were MSRP + TT&L.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news but that's actually already the case starting with the vehicle manufacturers themselves. They are making a massive profit selling cars to people who can't afford them too.
Then how would it be fair for a dealer to lose his money and close up shop by selling at last years market prices when he too has to pay higher to get used cars for him to sell to people? If everything was how you want it, there would be less dealerships, no pricing competition, and ultimately an even worse market. Think a little.
@@victoriap.m.6960 Given how smooth the Tesla buying experience is, I'm fine with no dealerships lol
To pay 50k for a used 2WD mid sized truck is unreal. 35k a few years ago got you a 4WD full size truck moderately equipped. No way any mildly intelligent human buys these.
12:48 shout out was great. I hope business there booms and buyers say they heard about their dealership on Donut!
As a McDonald salesman, for our VW branch across town from mazda west. We all appreciate the shout out!
Yes, dealers have gone wild. I was just trying to buy the new Toyota 86 GR. They wanted $40K for a $30K car. After buying 3 Toyotas and 2 Lexus, Toyota has made it impossible to buy one of their cars due to their dealers. The local Ford dealer has a 2 door Broco for sale, they want $74 K for it...lol
Man this hurts to read, I am seeing the same thing. I just want a premium seat 86 at around 34k at most not this bullshit they are tacking on.
13 Months ago, I bought a car. With the current market, I could sell it for roughly 25% over what I paid for it... And that would be a "good deal" or very competitive price to most on the market right now. It's absolutely ridiculous. Who is buying cars at these prices?? lol

People who need cars? Stupid fucking question
@@Ajtoh people who just need a car can buy a $ 2k ~ $ 5k burner and call it a day, but most people just want to buy as a symbol of status and not only to move from point A to point B.
@@javierortiz82 or something that they don’t have to worry about repairing three times a year. Have fun with that 2-5k hooptie
@@Ajtoh Yup. My trucks are someone else's problem when they start messing up because I've moved on by then. All comes down to what your peace of mind is worth and age, wear, and tear are the enemy.
Glad I bought my car when I did. Right around 2021 before all the gouging on the used market appeared. Got a Mustang GT350 for $51,000. It was even priced incorrectly online and they honored it. Shortly after I got it, I’d say 6 months, all the new stock dried up so the used prices skyrocketed with cars like mine going for 70k and up.
Back in 2017, my family bought a 2017 Chevy Traverse LT brand new, and we just sold it in November with 98k miles on it. I looked on the dealer website just out of curiosity and It's up for sale for $25,000. That's really close to the original MSRP when it was brand new. It wasn't really a good car during the time we had it and definitley not worth the price it's going for. Thank God nobody is foolish enough to buy it, but it's crazy how the used car market is now.
Purchased my 2007 chevy silverado duramax with 179,000km (111,000mi) for 22k, one year ago. Near identical trucks have recently been listed near me ranging from $37,000-$47,000. For a 15 year old truck. 50k was probably it's msrp!
Traverses are the biggest POS. Amazing.
The first time I ever saw this type of price mark-ups was with the 2010 Camaro. I lived in Vegas at the time and the dealers were marking up anywhere between $15,000 and $25,000.

@@23chnge I work at a used car dealership, I can’t account for everyone but we definitely don’t rip anyone of, people buy cars left and right and if they had an issue with our prices they can go to a different dealership. Also you can buy privately but that isn’t better than buying from a dealership for obvious reasons
As someone that got a new car in the last year, and didn't get screwed, I can't believe anyone is paying these prices. It's insane. People need to stop overpaying and these practices would stop.
Exactly people need to stick together and leave these cars on dealer lots to rot.
Yep, Supply and demand. No one is being forced to buy a newer car.
this video just convinced me that a direct consumer model is the way to go.
Dealers buy in bulk. We'll never see it.
Dealerships are sleezeball parasites. Just as bad as realtors.
Yep, I saw the "Nissan at Home" commercial and got excited for a second....then they said buy direct from the dealer to your home. WTF, that's nothing new. We need direct from plant to home, no dealer involved.

they will always tell you it is a great time to buy
If you can refuse to pay these guys and wait or fight for that MSRP this is unacceptable.
That’s what I do and refuse. They are out their mine
Just buy from the online dealer's they aren't up charging half the MSRP. I would bring it to a mechanic first tho
They are not just adding markups on the car but also on the hidden fees. I was looking at a car for $12000 and the total price on the bill of sale was $17500 after all the packages that are supposedly already installed and applied to the car.
Low credit also affects that. It sucks.
@@gloomsdoom649 The FIRST thing they do is draw your credit score, so NO, that's applied to the initial cost estimate.
@@judahsoremy9857 are you talking new sales? What if they are buying used and don't need financing? (Cash deal)
Hidden fees do not exist. It is illegal to do this and they would be caught not only by state regulators but also the banks. I still can't believe how stupid people can be about believing this kind of thing. When you go to do the paperwork be very close attention to what you are signing. Nothing can be hidden. Everything will be shown so therefore if you happen to see something that you did not agree to do not buy. If they have window tint for $2,000, that's not a good thing to buy. Again, nothing is hidden. Use common sense. Yes, there are some shady dealerships who will try and sell you $2,000 tint. But there are no hidden fees.
@@sterlingmoore4798 I ONLY pay with cash. Anyway, I was replying to Gloom's Doom's comment above.
I work at a Honda dealer and we aren’t marking up any of our new cars. I never thought I’d see the day where people are happily paying MSRP. We’ve had many customers come from PA, OH, TX just because the dealers are charging 3-7k over sticker. More business for us! We’re completely out of cars though.
Dealer ships are useless markups for no reason. I typically go in there with a list of things I want and how much I am willing to pay ( sticker price+ 2k for the dealership) and just shop around
Just for sticker price they should kiss your feet and buy some flowers for your wife because they make a lot on a car sold without any discounts.

Sticker +2k is already too high. MSRP is suggested to include the dealer's cut. Invoice +2k is more like it, but that is a pipe dream at the moment. Anyone paying ADM is why ADM exists; if no one paid it, they wouldn't charge it. Consumers are to blame.
Before all this supply craziness you should have been able to get 10% off MSRP. I would never have paid sticker and sure as hell not $2k over sticker.
MSRP+2k is still ridiculous. Never paid sticker for a car and I never will. People need to stop buying and the prices will come back down
So glad I ordered my 2022 Maverick hybrid 7 months ago and locked in my price. Production is next week and these now have nutty markups.
This is why I have never bought a vehicle from a dealership... I always buy private owned vehicles. Get you a vehicle thats 5-6 years old with low miles thats nice from someone who doesn't want it anymore and talk em down to your price or meet in the middle. You will still save 10's of thousands of dollars.
Dealer Market adjustments are illegal in Canada. A friend was charged +$30K for a Supra and when he found out the dealership cut him a cheque for a refund.

No they're not. If they advertise the price at let's say $100,000 then the only thing they can add on is taxes and some small fees. They can sell for whatever price they want as long as they advertise it at that price.
