In today’s video, I chat with a student from UCSD about his ethics around eating animals. We debate whether issues such as the legality of eating animals, the cultural significance around animal products or the amount of time we’ve been eating animals are relevant when it comes to deciding whether or not it is moral to not be vegan.

We live in a world where asking people to stop being cruel towards animals is considered offensive. I never realized how horrible some people were until I started speaking out against animal cruelty. The mere act of me not eating meat at a table triggers so many. It blows my mind.

I’m with ya man. It blows my mind too and over time (I’ve been vegan 5-6 years) my opinions of others gets lower and lower. Not others in “my circle” I just mean humans in general. It made me realize how awful we are as a species because we aren’t rational beings, we just rationalize all the terrible things they do. Every other animal on the planet that does awful things (eating young, cannibalism, etc) don’t do it because they don’t feel like changing, that’s just how they work. Humans on the other hand have the ability to question everything, but we do whatever we damn well feel like it to get a dopamine hit for a few minutes. It’s wild.

These aren't incompatible. You can support changing the ethics of the system (which is necessary), and you can also live consistent with your morals (which is insufficient but desirable) and abstain from eating animals. This isn't abstract; it's not complicated. Don't overcomplicate it!

We do need systemic change. The cost of water usage, land usage and deforestation on the environment need to be taxed and so the cost of animal products should be higher. We also need honest labelling and advertising to remind people of the damage to the animals, the environment and their health. Sadly I think that the only thing that will make the masses change is if they understand how animal agriculture will negatively effect humans.

Pushing pretty much anything is often offensive. People just don't like being pushed. By anybody. About anything. Especially about things which, if accepted, might require them to alter deeply ingrained habits, customs and worldviews or, alternatively, to feel guilty about not altering them.
Which is another thing most people don't care for and---except perhaps for persons with masochistic tendencies---usually try to avoid: feeling guilty, especially over things they've done or believed all their lives which were never previously causes of guilt.
Just what everybody wants, right? New "sins" to feel guilty about committing.
