      I agree, I was vegetarian for 2 years, I've been vegan for 6 months, and I've actually lost weight, I get much less gas, people comment on how my skin looks clear without makeup, and some digestive issues I had have gone away. This is from cutting out dairy, I already cut out meat for years, and had cut out RED meat for even more years than that.
      Interesting isn't it! But I didn't go vegan for that reason, I did it because I realised I couldn't be a hypocrite and experience the cognitive dissonance of knowing what was really going on in the dairy industry.

Decreasing the amount of saturated fat was one of the things they were researching. So it probably wouldn't be "as unhealthy", but somewhat less unhealthy.

    • @Joker-rv4td
      @Joker-rv4td 4 роки тому +8

      As a German it doesn't sound weird to me to refer to animals as "it", because in German "the animal" = "das Tier" is a neutral word i.e. you would refer to "das Tier" with the pronoun "es" = "it" (and this doesn't imply that animals are things, because e.g. the translations of "girl" and "child" are neutral as well).
      I am vegan, but I don't think that this "it" point that Ed made is a particularly strong argument, it just seems to be a grammar debate. There are other words like "love", "compassion" etc. that one would refer to as an "it" in English.
      Always saying "he or she" instead of "it" seems impractical. Using "they" is a good alternative. If a person wants to be referred to with "they", then I will do so out of respect for them. But I don't think that (non human) animals care about what pronouns we use.
      Of course many (all?) animals have personalities. Ed's argument was that by using "it" you convey that you think this is not the case. I agree that this seems to be a good indicator to find out whether you are talking to someone who thinks animals don't have personalities. What I disagree with is that there is something inherently wrong with using "it" for animals.

    • @80slimshadys

      @@Joker-rv4td pronouns for humans is not an issue because we recognise humans as valuable. Calling a person an "it" doesnt insinuate that they are as dispensible as a brick because we know thats not true. However calling an aninal an "it" has a very different connotation. It insinuates that they are an inanimate object and perpetuates the thought process that they are nothing and that inanimate objects are not worthy of even being recongnised as having a sex like him or her. It perpetuates the abusive and neglectful behavior towards them.
      Its the same concept that speciesism is the root of all descrimination and if we werent taught to love dogs and murder pigs we wouldnt be able to decriminate against people with just different skin colour if we already learned to love very different creatures of all forms. If we werent taught that animals are just an "it" we wouldnt have this psychology that they are replaceable like tables and chairs not even worth of having a name. "We couldn't grow anything but grass on two-thirds of it."
    This is a crazy, fairly dangerous myth. The majority of the UK -- pasture, arable, heath, commercial forestry -- is what's called plagioclimax, which means that it is maintained as that type of land purely through human intervention, and that if we left it alone, it would climax in a different type of land. In the UK, that would be *80% deciduous woodland.*
    The idea that this island, which is currently 70% farmland and 13% forest, always had this kind of landscape, or that it was always mostly grass, is absurd. We're a wet, temperate country, perfectly suited for forest, not a savanna or prairie or steppe, yet we have less % forest cover than Canada, Russia, Poland, Germany, Japan (all similar latitudes) or France, New Zealand, eastern China (all similarly temperate regions).

  • @LuveenWadhwani
    @LuveenWadhwani 4 роки тому +5

    Great job dismantling each of these arguments, Ed! Thank you for your comprehensive treatment of each topic.
    I'd add a couple points against the livestock grazing argument posed by the article:
    1. Much of livestock grazing takes place in forest or grass land cleared for that specific purpose, which already had functioning ecosystems and sequestered carbon with much greater efficiency. Removing this vegetation results in carbon emissions. It also sets off soil erosion and changes in local climate and precipitation patterns, which amplifies extreme weather events in these regions. Increasing the numbers of grazed livestock involves clearing more forested land and natural ecosystems, as we see happening in the Brazilian Amazon.
    2. Livestock grazing itself degrades soil due to compaction from trampling. The topsoil layer in forest lands is especially thin and easily removed as a result of disturbance from clearing and grazing. Once this happens, the area becomes nonarable. This is referred to as desertification. Desertified land cannot sequester any carbon, because the soil is either absent or too degraded to perform carbon sequestration. When poorly managed like in industrial animal farming, this not only results in net carbon emissions as you pointed out, but also amplifies climate disruption, which leads to further carbon emissions. This activity is thus fueling a destabilizing positive feedback loop.

I went veggie a few weeks ago and had cut out most dairy because of lactose intoletance, but on Saturday 15th I watched dominion and the next day gave away everything I had in my kitchen related to the exploitation of animals. I'm on day 8, it's early days but I'm determined to never go back to my old diet. The horrors I witnessed in that documentary were incredibly distressing but I'd read about the cruelty of factory farming and felt it necessary to cement in my mind the choice I was making. I would urge anyone thinking of watching it to read the self care section before and after and be kind to yourself, and others ❤️

We don't *need* quinoa or avocados, we can live on potatoes and oats etc. Wow, what a coincidence. So therefore, it isn't actually making a case for veganism or against meat.

      Thankfully the bible also says that God is rich in mercy and grace. That is why He sent His son to die on a cross to save us from our sin. You and I broke God's law but Jesus paid our fine. Then Jesus rose from the dead, 3 days later, thus defeating death.
