That is actually the premise. During the events of Doom (1993) DoomGuy finds himself in hell and in the second episode has to fight his way out. He escapes but not after slaughtering countless demons, they were already on edge and scared when he fought through the facilities on Deimos but that fear escalated. So by the time Doom 2 happens and DoomGuy (later to become the Slayer) shows up they're attacking because they're scared because they know they're about to die. All because the demons killed his pet rabbit, Daisy.
The games are a slow montage of the demons eventually discovering and understanding the truth of Doomguy and what he represents. In Doom the demons thought they won until you show up. Then they thought they killed you, but the Doomguy just keeps killing demons. Over the years he just keeps getting angrier!
