Classic Game Room presents a CGR Undertow review of F-Zero: Maximum Velocity for the Game Boy Advance developed by Nd Cube and Nintendo and published by Nintendo.
Just as they had done a decade earlier, Nintendo launched new hardware with an F-Zero game. The Game Boy Advance debuted at full throttle with F-Zero: Maximum Velocity, just the third F-Zero game released in North America. Maximum Velocity also brings the series back to its 2D roots. In fact, the track design is very similar to the original F-Zero, boasting lots of tight turns and narrow roads. Maximum Velocity was a landmark release for handheld gaming-it was a major step forward in terms of portable graphics and performance. Handheld games didn't look like Maximum Velocity before Maximum Velocity. And then handheld games got falcon punched! The game also features forward-thinking multiplayer options, including a single-cartridge option for what would later be called download play. F-Zero: Maximum Velocity is a single and multiplayer GBA launch title.
This video review features video gameplay footage of F-Zero: Maximum Velocity for the Game Boy Advance and audio commentary from Classic Game Room's Derek.
And here we are another decade later and still no new F-Zero 😩
A new F-Zero with the same amount of content as GX for Wii U would be just about the most badass thing that could happen, I'd even take a HD remake at this point.
Loved this game so much I overplayed it to the point of where it was impossible to beat my own ghost.
Same!
Danm, this video brings back memories of having this for the GBA. Also I had a messed up copy of this game because everytime I passed some trophy cups, It would not save.
The very 1st game I owned for the GBA.
What a blast from the past
I got this at launch along with Dodgeball Advance, Fire Pro Wrestling and Rayman. Honestly I didn't even need more games for a long while after this, which was great since I could wait for games I really wanted instead of buying just to have something to play. Game Boy Advance is neck and neck with the Game Cube as my favorite console of all time.
@@Thor-Orion What an amazing handheld.
After F-Zero I got Metroid Fusion and Crash Bandicoot XS.
In 05, Metroid Zero Mission
@@TheCrankyTechnician truly, GBA is my favorite handheld ever by a country mile.
I started with F-Zero SNES, the F-Zero X (still have the original cartridge, because it's one of the best N64 games to exist), and then along came F-Zero GX, which I'm still battling today. F-Zero is just plane awesome.
this game was incredible back in the days..! played it for hours with my brother
This game was my fav in GNA together with the street fighter. So much fun and compilations to try out
Best game one GBA ever! Had so much fun with this game:)
My favourite F-Zero by a long way. I love the look, atmosphere and soundtrack. The new vehicles are pretty fun too.
This cart and my Game Boy Micro are rarely out of reach - even today.
Would be great if some hacker made a version with the original vehicles though... :)
This was my First GBA Game : )
:D thanks for the shoutout!!! :D
He has a point about the late comers that were first exposed to the 3D games. That they may not like the mode 7 games that much. And I may be biased, but I was introduced to the series on the SNES and prefer the older version.
To me the mode7 version had a charm and charisma of its own that was lacking in the 3D games. Because it was lacking in 3D it left more to the imagination. Something I liked about all older videogames. Something I would like to see is the original F-Zero rendered in 3D. :D
You seem contradictory in your post.
@@doge-pal How? Because of the last statement? I'm saying I like the mode 7 game but it would be cool to see it remade in full 3D. I'm not saying I prefer the mode 7 graphics over 3D. I'm saying I prefer the way the mode 7 game played, not looked. Hope that cleared it up for you. :)
Aww man thanks! Perfect tip! This game is great but nvr quite figured it out but that makes sense with the physics. (The tap A on turns tip)
This game blew my mind when I got it for my birthday. I got this and Mario kart . I would show my friends Mariokart to get warmed up, then show them f zero and not tell them the tap secret. And surprisingly. I figured out the tap secret on my own because I remembered my uncle showing me a racing game years before gba and he told me to tap the gas button when you're turning.
F Zero maximum Velocity is still today in 2021 an extremely intense racing game. If racing is in your heart , you will love the challenge of this game. One tiny little mistake can loose you the race. It's all about practice, execution. Awareness. Strategy on when to use your boost, EXTREME SHORTCUTS. When you unlock Jet Vermillion, you will be able to play and win any Racing game. Or at least it makes you feel that way.
I have been recently playing all the GBA racing games. And the Need for Speed games have always been my favorite, there are a few that I am really enjoying right now, like Carbon, Underground 2 and Underground 1. But I started to replay this game today and it is just pure magic. It feels way faster than need for speed. The cars controls are very tight. You feel like you could thread a needle with them after a few races.
F Zero maximum Velocity I feel like is a must play in the GBA. I may be a little biased but it is a fantastic racing game.
Still trying to play it on my ps3 guys..
smh
its about time Derek. ive been waiting for a review on this for 2 years when I first started watching undertow
what REALLY pisses me off is how Nintendo just forgot about this series. they do fan service stuff in Mario Kart, but Mario Kart and F-Zero are TOTALLY different machines (albeit both good in their own respective ways). all i want is just ONE F-Zero game a console. just update graphics, add a few characters and tracks, some new music and ill be content. hell, i'd even be happy if they put GX on the Wii U or something, they don't even have to remake it in any shape or form, just port it.
They didn't forget about it, they said that it's "way to hard to make". However, modern nintendo in my opinion isn't near as amazing as its past self.
@@joshuapotter5940 its not about that. The overall sales in the series were not great. F zero SNES was the most sucessful followed by x. Games in the series after F Zero X were okay but not sold poorly.
I didn't think this video was a decade old lol but when this game releases on Nintendo Switch Online plus Expansion Pack later this year, January would be nice that's when I'll try it out. 22 to 23 years later I never owned it. I'll make the waiting pay off
I can't find this on the PSN. Can somebody help? ;)
F-zero is Nintendo exclusive.
+smells like zach Bet you wish you an Xbox now. Noob.
@@jorgerojas6808 He's joking ! He knows that it's not on Nintendo !
F-Zero needs to come out on the 3DS. Seriously.
so sad it did not... and now never will.... i played this on my 3ds tho
Needs to be released on the switch too.
My first GBA game LOL what a gem... blew up a lot as i nvr knew about hammer time..hmmm....come here SP come give poppa a velocity run haaa
This was my first game for the GBA when I was little. I never got past the first level, haha.
It was my first GBA game too. This video hit me with a pretty hard wave of nostalgia.
And damn, to this day I regret selling my GBA. AND my SNES for that matter.
I feel like they probably sacrificed some graphical quality here. Although admittedly with a name like “maximum velocity”, being able to feel like you’re moving fast is probably much more important.
Heck nimtendo just release Fzero gx HD remake on WiiU if you are feeling lazy!!id take that
Impossible to play this after playing GP Legend, because THAT game had super-tight gameplay and had an awesome storyline!
GX/AX was the last outstanding F-Zero game, and that was released a decade ago. Nintendo farmed this game to Suzak and ruined the franchise, and also didn't release another GBA game worldwide. They've just let the franchise die. I would say that N should have Amusement Vision make an F-Zero game for Wii U, but SEGA doesn't even make games in-house anymore, and nobody makes quality arcade-style racers in this day and age.
But it doesn't really matter because GX still looks beautiful a decade later, plays great, and is tough as nails. I'm going to go play it right now.
the franchise isnt dead this is nintendo look at kid icurus
I miss F-Zero!!!
Love it
I just git a glitch where the add on this video plays over infinitely, When it's done there's a play button which plays it again,
XD
Now, let's all remember that this was a thing.
love f zero bro
Maximum Velocity might have been a solid start, but after playing F-Zero GP Legend, I can't return to MV. GP Legend has more stuff to do, doesn't feel as repetitive and controls better.
But F-Zero Climax really is the climax of the F-Zero games. After which the big N stopped making them...
Check out F-Zero Climax, it's awesome! By far the best Mode 7 F-Zero game, and it has a lot of content and character!
Yeah, but it is only in Japanese and is very hard to find. I had to try it on an emulator, but it doesn't play as well with a keyboard.
xdlugia1 The menus and announcer are in English, I don't think the other stuff being in Japanese is an issue! And I can see copies of the game on eBay for about £30! But I'm sorry that you had trouble, I hope you can find a good way to play it.
it's more polished than MV but like GP legend it's based off of the shitty anime and the controls don't allow for much of a skill ceiling
they really messed up the controls on this game, no one wants to tap A while holding R and L on corners
Try GP Legends on the GbA, it's So much better.
THEY NEED TO MAKE A NEW ONE FOR WII U!!!!!!!!!
Krunchy The Clown on switch
Where is the review for Sonic Lost World?
I know right?
It's for GBA? I could've sworn I've played it on my PS3
WipEout HD?
All they need to do is make an HD remake of GX with online multiplayer, and then Nintendo would be rolling in even more money...
dude I used to play this all the freaking time and high school. I was a sophomore in high school and I had a gameboy micro at the time. this is what I would always play. I know all the shortcuts. But it is darn hard I couldn't even get to the freaking Queen Cup
Why did Nintendo dropped this series? Why not bring it back in 1080p 60fps on the WiiU ??
1sayanbakshi or on Switch.
Derek, I always thought you went meh towards the gba. good to know you appreciate it...
wait, ain't I supposed to say something negative now?
I Just Realized, you sound like Robin from Teen Titans
why does he keep comparing 2d games from 3ds games? ofc the game cube is better looking and handle better than a friggin GBA game, GBA was outdated even when it was brandnew!
People also tend to forget how epic the music in the original F-Zero was.
Yes. This. The music in the later games never captured me as much.
I had it and won all chapionship
Mark! You need to review more GBA games, this tool is too annoying lol!
The ps3 version is so much better
I'm not very good with this stuff but I just got a gba sp would this game work on it
Yes it most certainly will.
The 2nd GBA game F-Zero GP Legend is much better.
55 seconds!
Uh... bad move there when you took God's name in vain at the end...
