So funny thing about the Wii Mini and it's super niche desirability, I work at a local retro game store here in Canada and shortly after I started working the government of Canada approved the Wii Mini as an item a prisoner can bring in with them/have dropped off so you can imagine my surprise when one day on my shift the phone starts ringing and the caller ID shows it's from a correctional facility. I pick up the phone and ask if there's anything I can help out with and it's the manager asking if we had any Wii Minis in stock because (I phrase I never thought I'd hear) "the prisoners are going crazy for the Wii Minis and we can't get enough of them" and from that day forward literally EVERY call we get about Wii Minis is someone asking for one for a Pen Pack (a searched and approved gift for an inmate) and funnily enough they always ask for the God father game on the Wii and the Scarface game too. So in retrospect hey the Wii mini is kinda neat because it's super loved by prisoners lol, PS1s are also popular too.
That actually makes a lot of sense. That's the exact target demographic that would appreciate an inexpensive console that CANNOT be connected to the internet (and therefore the outside world).
The Wii Mini technically takes up MORE space than the other Wiis because you have to leave space for the disc tray to open, versus having the other Wiis disc just slide in
fun fact about the wii mini: there was actually one more thing nintendo removed from the wii mini: the capacitors for filtering component video. that meant that, even if you had the component av cables, you couldn’t even use them, and were forced to use the included composite cables. it also meant that if you owned a third party hdmi adapter, you couldn’t even use that.
The New 2DS XL was made specifically for people like me: poor people who desperately needed a replacement for their old 3DS without completely cheaping out for a 2DS There are few of us but we are proud
N2DSXL is the definitive 3DS for softmodders, purely because of the fact that the microSD slot is right next to the game slot. It's got the same power as the N3DSXL, but it's so nice not having to take the backplate off just to access the microSD. The Flap also means that the slots survived the years of leaving it to sit in a drawer and collect dust. Also, the special editions are the best special edition consoles we've gotten imo. The Hyrule Shield? The Pokéball version? The Pikachu version? Come on people
Yeah you're right, I have mine modded and it's the best portable game system for me.The clam shell design is perfect and i can play every Nintendo handheld game plus SNES and some N64 as well on it 😊 One thing Scott is right ,the home and Power buttons feels cheap other than that it's perfect for my use of the handheld
It also isn’t really cheap at all lol it is a bit cheaper but it’s barely noticeable. For someone like Scott who only plays games and I presume played a lot on the other consoles, it can be a clear downgrade but to any person it feels fine. And it fixed a ton of issues with the 3ds (like the sd card placement) and is the definitive system for modding like u mentioned. I modded mine to the brim and it’s sick, would’ve took like 4x as long with a normal 3ds with the only benefit being a “better feel” and the 3ds function which many didn’t use towards the end of the consoles life.
As I understood it at the time, the Wii Mini was a soft launch in Canada because different provincial and municipal authorities wanted a cheaper SKU to buy in bulk from Nintendo for use in schools, hospitals, assisted living centres, nursing homes, etc.
2:48 - "Does anybody else kind of ever change whether their system is vertical or horizontal?" Gotta give shoutouts to the PS2, whose logo was _rotatable_ so it would always look intentional depending on how you stood your system. Obsessed with that little design bonus.
I remember people who played the 3DS a lot had really loose hinges on the 3DS and AR games were unplayable cuz the top half would swing back and forth repeatedly in the middle of play
@@PorkSharkon the 3DS, the cameras are extremely crucial for the console to work. For some reason there is a chance of the console being stuck on a black screen just because the camera module is faulty. The 3DS works fine if the wireless card is not working, which is way more useful than the camera
@@lordeilluminati I've actually been considering getting a 2DS XL as my backup device cause I heard it also eliminates the hinge issues the other models became known for.
I remember looking at some old press releases from 2012 for the Wii Mini, and one of the reasons cited by Nintendo of Canada for why it was only distributed there first was because of the color scheme. *The color scheme.*
I'm pretty sure Nintendo is just fucking with the customers. They just didn't want to say "We don't have a lot of confidense in this product so we will test it in Canada first".
When my wii broke in 2013 I replaced it with a wii mini, just because it was cheap and I was a broke teenager. I wasn’t very happy when I realised I couldn’t play online, back then all the games’ servers were still up and that so it was the main appeal for some games! I also really missed using my GameCube controller, I didn’t play GameCube games on the Wii very often but I used the controller on any games I could. I eventually gave it to a friend and bought an original wii second hand, but I felt very cheated by the wii mini. Obviously I should have done more research, but generally I just think it was missing too many features. For people who just wanted to play Wii sports or whatever it’s grand, and nowadays it’s probably fine as well since online play isn’t really accessible anymore, but at the time it really took a lot of value out of some games for me.
I remember reading a story of someone who's wii broke when they were a kid, and their parents went out and replaced it with a wii mini. I can't imagine the pain they must have felt that day
Honestly, I wish the Wii mini was the only redesign Nintendo made. The family edition was just the same as the original Wii (in terms of looks and features), just minus the GameCube support.
The matte look of the PSP Street is something, really wish someone made a Matte Black faceplate for the PSP, honestly a decent first PSP for most people
The PSP Street was the only model I could afford by myself, as a kid. Was available under 100€ back then. I oppose the video title by saying: It's a good console redesign if it can reach more eager hands that want to play them! Edit: spelling error
I know he owns a PS4 pro from his Game Room video, so I assume he just doesn't have the base model. Considering the PS4 Pro covers all bases there really isn't a need for the base one, but I am surprised he doesn't have all the redesigns of every console lol
I quite liked the original 3DS design too. But im apparently one of those weird people who actually likes the look of glossy electronics. But I think the ugliest part of it was the three layers with different shades, made it look kinda thrown together from the side.
I didn’t like how there was no clickiness to the hinges. Not only is it unsatisfying, but nowadays it gives me this sense that the top screen is gonna struggle to stay in place.
@@washurbrik2848 that's crazy man I actively move my PS3 around my house just because of how huge a library it can still play, it's so light. 17 POUNDS. No wonder people thought bin laden was using it for weapons of war

@@r3tr0sp3ct3rit definitely has its benefits. IIRC it had internal storage for the OS so if you wanted to upgrade the hard drive to an SSD you didn’t have to do the whole install firmware thing. That’s possibly the main downside of the Slim as my BC PS3 also lets me throw a drive in without needing to install the firmware. Super Slim is also a quieter system than the Slim. I will continue to use my Slim over the Super Slim because limited space mans my consoles are vertical. Not really great for the super slim. The cheap stands I don’t feel like I can trust and you need to be able to get your hand over the disc drive anyway. Not gonna spend $50 or whatever it costs for the official stand either.
New 2DS XL came with a power supply and the New 3DS XL did not. So if you're just getting into the 3DS you would've needed to buy a separate charger on top the extra $50 for the N3DS XL. Also the lighter weight of the N2DS XL is a little bit of a selling point to some. I bought the N2DS XL at launch over the N3DS XL because the 3D effects don't work for me, I needed a charger, & I was tight on cash. I was collecting all the Zelda games at the time and needed a way to play the DS-N3DS games. I even loaded up all the Zelda games I could from the eshop.
@@EvaFull The Genesis 3 isn't bad. For a cost reduced machine it is perfectly fine and even has an audio chip of higher quality than the Model 2. Remember, when it was released it cost 50 bucks, which was half the price of even the cheapest console available at stores.
The PS5 slim is absolutely ludicrous💀 imagine paying $500+ for a wobbly ass console. They took a perfectly fine design and completely ruined it for no reason.
My Dad traded his normal one out for the whackass slim. Meanwhile, I kept my normal one, because it’s overly gigantic, and I like having huge consoles on my dresser! It’s also why I buy physical copies whenever I can. I LIKE BEING ABLE TO TOUCH THE GAME I WANT TO PLAY.
I love Scott's point about the "super cheap" redesigns coming out when it was just cheaper to get a used/refurbished version of the design with more features, because I bought a PSP 1000 and several games, when I was in high school, for a hundred bucks. The Go came out shortly after and was more than double that.
Its probably aimed at people that don't like second hand items for the lack of warranty or similar. At least for me if it has a screen I prefer buying things new just to ensure there aren't any scratches on the display and that I can return it in case of dead pixels or similar without any hassle. My Samus Aran New 3DS XL actually had that problem where there was dust trapped from the factory between the lens and the display, and I had to RMA it. But for consoles where small issues like scratches don't matter? Better to just get a refurb or a warehouse deal or similar.
Sony's American division handled the PSP Go horribly in general, they refused to stop shooting themselves in the foot over it because of greed. The thing never received any price cuts (intentionally) and it was bundled with 3 digital games in the USA (all of them greatest hits titles that you could not avoid as used at the time). Meanwhile Europe still had an expensive console, but they did get a whole 13 games bundled, to which my understanding is that they were all Platinum titles as well. At the very least the argument between a cheaper used 2004 or 3004 and a new Go would have been "you don't need to carry these 13 highest-selling games you'll probably buy anyway, with their easily destroyed UMD shells." Sony of America had increased the price of the PSP 2000 for the North American market prior to this: it was cheaper in Japan compared to the domestic price of the older 1000 model, but they were both the same price in North America. Ultimately, they wanted you to pay full price for a new digital only console that could literally only play full price digital games in a generation where most of the games were not available digitally, and even if they were, the cost of the _previous_ generation of their memory format was already a gateway to a substantial library at the time. The thing was designed around the M2 card, Sony's third form factor revision of the MemoryStick card, which __never__ stopped costing an arm and a leg __ever__ - the capacities were atrociously small, and you couldn't even bank on memory density being worse but the flash chip itself at least having the grace of being huge. The Go has 16GB of flash on board and if you didn't shell out $100USD at the time to buy what probably amounted to 16GB, you had no extra storage. Most games weren't licenced for digital sale either, so you were restricted to titles from around 2008 and beyond outside of Sony's own published software, most if not all of which have been released on PSN as far as I'm aware.
@@CrashFan03 didn’t the ps2 fats have an overheating problem? i might be flipping which model had that issue in my head but if it’s less reliable it makes sense
i honestly love the new 2ds xl. i take it around with me all the time, and because its slimmer than the n3ds it just fits in my pocket better. i never used the 3d screen anyway because it hurt my eyes more than youd expect. there were also major changes in production quality in the later runs, and my later model feels almost indistinguishable from my n3ds.
I also love the new 2ds xl. It’s my favorite model of 3ds due to being the lightest, and to me, best feeling design. It was also a steal at $99 in 2020, a great replacement because my new 3ds xl broke 😢. I have been tempted to get a regular sized new 3ds though, as I am unsure as to if I would like that better.
The New 2DS XL is my favorite of the 3DS lineup by far. I picked one up in 2017 after my 3DS XL died to have something to play my 3DS library on, and it fit the bill perfectly. In fact, it reinvigorated my opinion of the platform and became my most played Nintendo platform until 2020.
I bought my 2dsxl second hand because I thought my DS light screen was about to break and I didn't want to loose the ability to play those games. Fast forward to today and my ds lite still works. But now I have a back up system and even discovered another game library 😂
The SEGA Genesis 3 was HUGE in Latin America. It was such an amazing design and it was incredible seeing it so tiny. Genesis 2 was the default for everyone but everyone desired the 3.
My favorite thing about the Wii Mini was that when Club Nintendo was shutting down Da Boyz over on /v/ figured out how the serial numbers were incremented so you could create a family account with eight members, each of whom did the survey for a Wii Mini and got you 100 coins a pop, allowing you to get a code for the games they had in their closing sale or physical merch. I swept up all the 3DS games they were offering and that Majora's Mask messenger bag. Times were good.
the OG PS4 having that shiny black fingerprint magnet on it was such a deterrent to me, I couldn’t disagree with Scott more. Those PS4 slims are my favorite looking PS4s
To the two comments complaining about the OG PS4, the "fingerprint magnet" and the touch bar were only on the original model, later releases gave it a more typical finish and has physical buttons instead. You don't need a slim for that. Not that that information is exactly useful in 2024 but hey, always good to be informed.
Is Scott filming top-down on the rug in his living room? Because I keep imagining him lying down, kicking his feet back and forth in the air as he's recording.
i had the pleasure of growing up with both the Wii Mini, the PSP Street and the 2DS. whilst i wish i grew up with some of the earlier models in hindsight (although i do think the 2DS is actually pretty cool), at the time i didn't know any better since at the end of the day, i could still play games on them and that's all that mattered as a kid
@@flyingplantwhale545 That's not all that was good about the PSP Street. Like you say, it had a screen that didn't have the ghosting issues. But it also had the more comfortable form factor like the original PSP 1000, but used the improved buttons (the 1000's buttons were actually really bad) and internals of the PSP-3000. I actually understand dropping the wifi, because most PSP games were single player - and at the time of the Street's release many default router configurations weren't even compatible with any PSP. Basically, if you don't need wifi you get a better playing experience on a Street than on the other models. (Yes, mono speaker but if you care about sound quality you're going to use headphones.)
I still have my OG 2DS. I didn't see a point in buying the new 2DS because of my hands. The 2DS is far more comfortable for me than the 3DS, my hands would always kinda hurt after a little while with that one, so this was a godsend
I had no idea the Wii Mini existed until one of my friends was cleaning his parents' house and took it out of a drawer and I thought it was fake or a custom mod at first lmao
The 2DSXL was a decent option in Europe, due to us having the small New 3DS as opposed to the New 3DSXL. It was really hard to get here, and if you did it would be an imported one, meaning there were regional shop issues. So if you wanted a "New" handheld with a big screen, the only real option was the 2DSXL.
Aw man, I absolutely love my Creamsicle 2DS XL. It fits my hands perfectly, the little flap both kept my games from popping out in my pocket and made the SD card easier to access, and it was just so much lighter than the other models. I dunno, maybe I've just got weak wrists.
i must confess i have been having better sleep solely because i just put on whatever scott is talking about at night (i enjoy it still though its awesome)
N2DSXL was a great system though. Took the best aspects of the 2DS and N3DSXL and made the second best version of the system. Only downside is it felt a little cheap
Surprised tbh, I always felt like the N2DSXL was the ideal weight / form factor, I have the Pikachu one and love the aesthetics of it too. Never thought the buttons felt overly cheap. Would’ve been my go-to system in the family but I ultimately went back to my new N3DS XL because I missed the 3D too much (yes really lol). Always thought the 3DS XL was just a little too bulky.
I understand the new 2ds xl is kinda pointless, but I’m a fan of the design. To me it looks slick and more like a modern device. I don’t have one myself, but I want one still haha
I have one right beside me, it’s a wonderful lil’ thing. Upgraded in 2020 from my launch model to the blue/black version and it feels so sleek and smooth! I love running my finger against the top too, the stripes have depth! It’s become my ultimate Pokemon machine!
@@Rediscool9 A lot of people hate the thing for kinda stupid reasons if you ask me. "It feels cheap" is always what I hear, and Scott used that word 4 times describing it here without elaborating, it comes across that people hate the N2DSXL's feel but can't put it into words
@@averysmalman8191 My issues with it isn't the design as I think it looks nice. The problem for me is the location of the speakers causing the sound to have tin effect and the hinge feels really weak. The latter is especially scary playing any game where you need to rapidly press a button cause the top screen to swing back and forth.
"Does anybody else kinda ever like change whether their system is vertical or horizontal, just because they wanna try something new?" No, I've changed from vertical to horizontal after a house shaking thud caused my old 360 to ruin a new game I literally came home with an hour beforehand, Scott
Technically you can use the photo channel without a method of importing photos because some games generate images (ie, completing the last cup in a cc in mario kart).
I think the Wii Mini was quite cute and good for casual players who didn't have the Wii yet. Smaller, colourful, and cheaper (especially the bundle with Mario Kart). The Wii Mini came out December 2012, and all Wiis lost internet support May 2014, so good on Nintendo for not making internet connection a selling point. As for GameCube support, GameCube games were and still are pricy. The target audience of the Wii Mini, that is to say people who didn't have a Wii, probably would not have a GameCube collection at all and be buying from the Wii hype to play with their family/friends.
Disagree on Nintendo cutting internet support being a good thing. The Wii Mini would’ve been way more enticing to buy if it still maintains the internet access, considering that there’s still services like UA-cam, Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, etc. that were still running up until 2019 (2017 for UA-cam), and Call of Duty servers were still up until like last year. Like Scott said in his Console Redesign episode, if the Wii Mini had internet support and an HDMI port, it would’ve been a huge hit as a 2-in-1 streaming box + game console
@@Northgical Neat, but the Wii U launched before the Wii Mini, including internet support and HDMI... and its sales were not hot. In general, Nintendo makes varied consoles to fit a variety of buyer niches, and somehow having extra features made it still a hardcore Nintendo fan-only console.
@@ninjaydes Those aren’t the reasons why Wii U failed though, it was combination of poor marketing and games coming out on it not really utilizing the Wii U Gamepad to it’s fullest, doesn’t really have anything negative to do with internet support and HDMI integration. and Wii U as a console was never really a “for hardcore fans” kind of console imo, that title goes more towards the GameCube.
@@Northgical Internet support and HDMI obviously did not cause the Wii U to fail, but they couldn't salvage the console into success. By extension, we don't know that incorporating HDMI/internet into Wii Minis would increase their sales noticeably at a profit for Nintendo.
I just ordered a PSP Go the other day with the cradle and all the accessories for $130 the other day and I cannot be more excited. I didn't realize I'd be this psyched over a PSP but here we are. I'm gonna use it like more of an iPod and homebrew toybox anyway so I don't feel the need for a physical PSP game collection.
Im surprised you didnt talk about the nintendo switch lite. How it removes any ability to dock with the TV or how its joysticks would get drift, but are not replaceable like joycons are.
Well the Switch is part of the current console generation so there is no “definitive” remodel yet. All of these came out at the end of each one’s lifespan.
@@Amber-jb8su the switch is already way older than the 3ds was when the n2dsxl released, so I don't think we'll get another model until next year, and that's probably when the successor releases
They are replaceable just like normal joycons, unless you're talking about throwing away the entire joycon for having stick drift because that's a huge waste of money.
I love, love, love my wedge-y 2DS. Picked one up last February (my first and only in the 3DS family) and *loaded up* on games before the eShop closed. Purchased 100 games, not counting demos, and I don’t see that red/black 2DS crapping out on me anytime soon.
Well, if you were a loyal Nintendo fan, you would already have at least two of them from your DSi and original model 3DS. That's how it was for me at least. I wonder how many people buying the New 3DS actually needed to buy the power supply.
The SNES Junior has one redeeming quality. When modded for component video output, it actually provides the sharpest pixel quality to the signal compared to other SNES models. Obviously for CRT output it really doesnt matter, but when paired with an HD scaler like a RetroTink, its definitely noticeable.
Is this a bad time to say that I like the Xbox 360 E redesign? Maybe it’s because that’s the 360 model I own and grew up with. This past November actually marked its 10th year of operation since it was manufactured in Nov 2013.
I honestly prefer it over the Fat and Slim xbox 360, it's both quieter and runs a bit cooler than both, it also seems to load games a tad bit faster but it could just be me
The New 2DS XL feels like a fragile McDonald's toy but I can say mine serves me very well. For a console redesign it does what it needs to do, no real failures except in build quality. The black and blue color is a fingerprint grease magnet though, but matte plastic so yummy.
The New 2DS XL isn't bad - hell, in some ways, I find it more confortable to hold in my hands than its buffer, non-eyepatched sibling - it just has a buncha bizarre design choices applied to it. The flap does a good job of stopping dust from getting into the cartridge slot and it makes it easier to replace the SD card, but the more I think about it, the more I wonder if Nintendo only put that flap there to create parity with the Nintendo Switch. And yes, the cameras and speakers being moved to the bottom and outside, respectively, is confusing, but I wanna bring up how stubby the New 2DS XL's stylus is. Like, that could get rid of anyone's feelings of inadequacy.
The Genesis 3 was my childhood console, my dad came in the door one day with a plastic grocery bag full of games and that dinky little hunk of plastic. I have such a fond ideal of it, despite now knowing it's the clear outcast of the three designs
Surprised the NES Top Loader didn't make the cut, weird hump, orange buttons, the cartridge sticking out as long as the console, and the wishbone controller.
Obviously the NES cartridge is significantly bigger than the Famicom cartridge. Honestly, though, at least I don't have to worry so much about ruining the pins of the games. The Japanese version of NES Top Loader (Famicom AV) has a flat surface instead for the cartridge slot. Personally I think it looks even blander than the North American unit. I'll defend the Top Loader from a mechanic standpoint, but I can't do it so much in terms of looks unlike with SNES 2. The main NES controller is iconic, but let's be honest it does have a bad habit of digging into your hands. The wishbone controller deserves more credit. The only other NES controller I'd personally use would be Origin8 due to the bottom corners being rounded out and it being 2.4ghz wireless. Aside from ditching the hard-wired controllers and there being no need for it to work with the abandoned Disk Drive anyways, the main NES itself deserves to be labeled as a bad revision. While the Analogue NT is the superior slimmed down NES, the problem is that it's currently not being made any further.
SNES Jr. is absolutely a fan-given name. Its official name is the New-Style Super Nintendo Entertainment System. Same with the top loader NES; it's called New-Style as well. With the hyphen. Beacuse.
6:39 - Netflix wasn't really a thing outside the US at that point in time (some important European countries like Italy or Spain didn't have Netflix until 2015).
Hot take, I actually love the feel of the PSP Street. Out of all my PSPs, the matte finish is refreshing due to it not constantly attracting fingerprints, and the chunky weight feels good in my sausaged beef hands. It definitely feels of a lower build quality, because it is, but I love it all the same. The original PSP-1000 follows very closely behind for me; it feels nicer overall, but the thing is a constant grease/print trap.
Another issue with the wii mini, (as well as most top loading disc consoles), is people would accidentally or unknowingly touch the lazer sensor and misalign it or otherwise break it since it was exposed. You may think that's stupid and a user error, but honestly, a good console design should be idiot proof, especially if kids are part of your target demographic. I remember talking to the owner of a local games shop, and that was his main complaint for the wii mini and ps3 super slim.
Was definitely expecting 2DS to come up but instead 2DSXL? A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one. The OG 2DS was surprisingly comfy and the price couldn’t be beat
I had one for over a year before I got a New 3DS XL, and it wasn’t terrible, but mine was a bitch and deleted my games and my saves. It also refused to transfer my save data to my New 3DS XL and ended up deleting the saves. After, it got BLOD and now it won’t boot. Blue light only.
I don't really get the praise a lot of people gave to the 2DS line when they're cutting off a defining feature of the console (imagine Wii remotes without motion controls), but I concur that the standard one did have a raison d'etre. The new 2DS XL was horrible however, with the smartphone-like top screen, nonsensical layout, and it has by far the most fragile 3DS hinge.
I don't get the problem with the 2DS XL, it feels great, the microSD card slot is much more accessible, which makes modding way easier, and the design is really nice, rivaled only by the small New 3DS in my opinion.
The New 2DS XL actually got a huge price cut and only costed $100 before Nintendo stopped producing them. I picked up a 2DS XL back in 2020 because I never got the chance to experience anything 3DS until I had the money myself, and by 2020 Nintendo mostly stopped producing New 3DS XLs, so my local Walmart only had 2DS XLs in stock (and 3DS systems were starting to be resold for $250+ at this point). So, $100 to experience the entire 3DS library (and free MK7) is honestly a really good value IMO. Yes, the console feels cheaper and things like the stylus are placed in really funky places, but I love this system nonetheless for its affordability. I do agree that $150 is wayyyy to steep especially if the New 3DS XL was $200, but for $100 I think the New 2DS XL earns its keep as the "middle-of-the-road" 3DS.
I initially wanted the PS5 digital, by the time I bought it they only had the disc version. I am so happy I bought the disc version. While my library is still mostly digital, the few physical games I got were worth it.
I think the idea of releasing a console redesign after the successor launches is to compete with the prospect of buying a used last-gen system. You could buy a refurbished original model from GameStop, or you could buy our budget refresh model new in box from GameStop.
as someone with a n2dsxl as their main 3ds system at the moment, I *desperately* want a n3dsxl; the top screen is so thin and flimsy that I constantly feel the urge to rip it off its hinge and I swear one day I might just give in to the voices I will say it's nice having access to the sd card without needing a screwdriver though, especially now that I've gotten into modding, but that's about the only positive thing I can say
I swear i saw a wii mini in a store in Belgrade, Serbia as a kid, seriously thinking of getting it. I remember giving up just because of the lack of internet
Actually the Wii Mini isn't Canada exclusive, we had them as well here in Chile Also the reason of the existence of the 360E is that allegedly Microsoft at first "intended" to keep supporting the 360 and made the 360E as a cheaper more affordable alternative to the one so people who couldn't afford the One wouldn't feel left out
I recall when Microsoft first unveiled the XBO, they wanted to force everyone to have to have a constant internet connection to even turn it on (as well as 'assigning' any purchased games to your console forever, thereby killing pre-owned games or even borrowing them). When they were confronted about this, their infamous response was something along the lines of: "If having internet is too much for you in the modern day, just buy an Xbox 360". Thankfully they reversed their decision after they got huge flak from everyone, as well as Sony poking fun at them (the irony being that Sony has attempted to do something similar to MS with the XBO themselves - numerous times).
@@N.i.E.M.Oyep, Sony pulled an epic troll there. I don't know if they quickly scrapped their plans to do the same thing, or never actually intended it and just wanted to bait MS, but either way it worked. Definitely the kind of skeezy thing Sony would do, though. I'm surprised it hasn't come back.
@@gamecubeplayer Yeah, but 1. Not all games are supported. 2. Wiis aren’t compatible with certain types of network security. 3. I’ve had trouble setting it up. Everyone is giving different directions on how to do it and it’s so confusing and troublesome.
If you're into putting custom firmware onto consoles the PSP Street and Wii Mini are actually kind of fascinating. They have no means of internet capabilities and yet that doesn't stop them from turning into incredible emulation/homebrew/"playing backup games" machines in spite of their creators trying to lock them out of such exploits.
Honestly, I don't really get why someone would want to emulate games on their game console. You have more developed emulators for your PC/phone that also contains better hardware. Handheld consoles I do kind of get, since you get to play on the go with a proper controller, but you can still attach reasonably good controllers to your phone nowadays. Now, as for "backup games"... There's nothing like running the software on native hardware, as you get the exact form factor they were meant to be in, and the same hardware features. DS, 3DS, Vita, Wii and Wii U in particular require the hardware to get the proper experience if you don't want to go out of your way to set up something complicated.
@@leonroIPhone doesn’t really have any options for emulation, so for some people portable consoles are the only way for them to emulate on the go. As for emulating on consoles, consoles generally are much cheaper than a PC, and they can also play their native games, so it’s nice to have a sort of all in one thing.
@@brickthecat Oooh, I forgot people have iPhones. That's too bad. As for consoles, I seriously don't think people own consoles without having access to a capable enough PC, unless they're kids maybe. Homebrewing consoles usually requires a PC, after all. I get native games, but what can you emulate on a commonly homebrewed console like the Wii? N64 or PS1 games? You can perfectly do that on pretty much any PC nowadays, even the bottom of the barrel ones that are too slow when using normal applications.

As ridiculous as a Wii Mini with no wifi so it can't be a streaming box is, what if a company made a TV Box, used the guts of a handheld game console, one that supported Netflix and take out the Netflix support for the streaming box. Welcome to the PSTV
Game compatibility on the PS TV was a mess too with games that would be able to work getting flagged as incompatible for no reason (and in some cases by the developers trying to get people to double dip on PS4 versions). Luckily it became very easy to mod that out without jailbreaking so everything launches.
The Wii mini was super useful for people who do long roadtrips in the early 2010's. You could put a Wii mini into your family SUV for $100 and all the kids could play on road trips instead of buying DS consoles for each kid. Plus games for Wii were cheap at those discount Walmart bins, whereas DS games were always stupid expensive. The 3ds also launched in 2011, but it cost about $200 CAD at launch.
My daughter was five years old when I got her the Mario Maker 2DS so she would imprint as a game maker. One of the best moves I have ever made. She knows how we control games and how games control us. We are both big fans of Scott and have been known to introduce ourselves with “Hey there, Scott here!”
I like the 2DS because I've repaired an ungodly amount of 3DS's with broken hinges. It's nice and easy to work on / repair. I wish they made a 2DSXL but beggars can't be choosers lol.
I see the Wii Mini as the Wii’s younger sibling, trying to mimic it but in a “giving your younger sibling a dead controller and pretending they’re playing the video game ” kind of style.
The Wii Mini might be the most pointless redesign ever. As if it wasn’t bad enough when they stripped out the GC abilities, they took out the WiFi options?! And it’s not like it made the console 50 bucks or something. It still cost $100.
You get mariokart wii and a wheel ($60), which basically made the console $40 which wasn't bad. If you didn't own mario kart but already had an old wii, might as well get a second console for your least favourite kid. Also 100 Canadian dollars is less than 100 US. At the time I'd guess it's around $90 US.
@@arsenalfanatic09 People love to bring up software in these bundles. Don’t get me wrong, on the consumer end it’s a great addition. But from the company side, it cost them nothing. At that point, Mario Kart Wii had sold tens of millions of dollars. To them, it literally cost the price of the disc. That’s my view at least.
@@leeartlee915 If they included a worse game then I'd agree more with your view on this specific bundle. Usually software bundles are games that people don't want that much, like the ones that usually come with graphics cards. When it comes with actually good software that retains its value I think it's excusable. Used copies of Mario Kart were still probably $30, nintendo never marked stuff down in that time. For around the price of a used (more functional) wii and a used (possibly scratched) disc at gamestop, to get a new console plus that same game is a good deal. It's at least better than deca sports or whatever was in the bundles with a wii mote (for 10 extra dollars). You'd have to pay me to play that game for an hour. And mariokart is the most essential wii game to have for a 4 person party-game session. It's better than mario parties that were on wii, and more family/noob friendly than smash bros brawl. And less space required and more replayability than wii sports.
So in retrospect hey the Wii mini is kinda neat because it's super loved by prisoners lol, PS1s are also popular too.

fun fact about the wii mini:
there was actually one more thing nintendo removed from the wii mini: the capacitors for filtering component video. that meant that, even if you had the component av cables, you couldn’t even use them, and were forced to use the included composite cables. it also meant that if you owned a third party hdmi adapter, you couldn’t even use that.

The 2DS XL Blue and Black was legendary! I love mine!!

I love how it had totally wacky editions. The n3DS really couldve gone wild too with face plates. Missed opportunity
As I understood it at the time, the Wii Mini was a soft launch in Canada because different provincial and municipal authorities wanted a cheaper SKU to buy in bulk from Nintendo for use in schools, hospitals, assisted living centres, nursing homes, etc.

Just double checked the Game Room video, he has a base PS4 in that video as well. I guess he maybe sold it or maybe it broke or something?
PS5 can play nearly all PS4 games, so maybe he got rid of it in favor of keeping the newer console. Seems like an odd choice to me but idk

I quite liked the original 3DS design too. But im apparently one of those weird people who actually likes the look of glossy electronics.

I love Scott's point about the "super cheap" redesigns coming out when it was just cheaper to get a used/refurbished version of the design with more features, because I bought a PSP 1000 and several games, when I was in high school, for a hundred bucks. The Go came out shortly after and was more than double that.
even back in like 2011 (or 12 idk) i saw ps2 slims being sold second hand for more than the original fat models

"Does anybody else kinda ever like change whether their system is vertical or horizontal, just because they wanna try something new?"
No, I've changed from vertical to horizontal after a house shaking thud caused my old 360 to ruin a new game I literally came home with an hour beforehand, Scott
Technically you can use the photo channel without a method of importing photos because some games generate images (ie, completing the last cup in a cc in mario kart).
The MarioGalaxy games rewarded you with some photos for the photo channel for beating bowser and getting 100% iirc :]
animal crossing also lets you take photos in-game, it was very cute
But the Photo Channel isn’t installed on the Wii Mini’s version of the Wii iOS. Does it get installed if the game makes a photo?
Awesome video Scott but I’m kinda surprised you didn’t include the PS3 Super Slim since I know that reredesign definitely got its share of criticism
That's the one with the disc tray that you have to slide open? I didn't think that looked to bad tbh
Well said!
24:05. SNES Jr is Scott's least favorite 3DS redesign. It can't even play 3DS games.
They are replaceable, I've done it myself but it's just a huge hassle to do the right side one specifically
I've had my switch since about 2019 and surprisingly the joycons have yet to shit out on me
They are replaceable just like normal joycons, unless you're talking about throwing away the entire joycon for having stick drift because that's a huge waste of money.
"Off the grid Wii..." Electricity?! Did this particular Wii have a hand-cranked generator to power it?
Almost half an hour of Scott roasting all of the console versions I owned (except for the Wii mini I already had an og black one)
I love, love, love my wedge-y 2DS. Picked one up last February (my first and only in the 3DS family) and *loaded up* on games before the eShop closed. Purchased 100 games, not counting demos, and I don’t see that red/black 2DS crapping out on me anytime soon.
Scott the New 3DS didn't come with a charger though, the New 2DS did, meaning the savings is more than a mere $50

It _does_ bring back actual buttons for Power and Eject, as opposed to the 360 S's touch sensors.

The flap was for dust and splash resistance. But I agree in the fact that Nintendo shat it out to prove "Hey we still support the 3DS!"
I often use the ds lite stylus while playing on the 2dsxl. It's way more comfortable 😂
@@Lara2516 True! I would rather have a stylus that's either skinnier or longer than what the New 2DS XL has to offer.

I like how scott explains the theory on why the wii mini exists in canada, for it to be 100% accurate for my family.
Beacuse.
The SEGA Genesis III is one of the Worst Console Redesigns ever made.
Seeing scott in the 2DS XL's reflection was a jumpscare jesus
Always good to see a video on the Wii Cottage
18:37 looking at Scott’s reflection on the screen you can see him reading directly from a script.
he may be looking at the camera feed on a monitor to make sure he's in frame.
I’m looking for a regular 2DS. Know where to find one?
eBay or classified
The 2DS is decidedly NOT one of the worst console redesigns. That lower price point is what allowed 12 year old me to get it for Pokemon X
The Wii went from, “Wii would like to play” to, “Wii gon’ play, AIGHT?”
I don't get the problem with the 2DS XL, it feels great, the microSD card slot is much more accessible, which makes modding way easier, and the design is really nice, rivaled only by the small New 3DS in my opinion.
Best part of these videos is when scott's face reflects off of things
Confused by the SNES Jr being Scott's least favorite 3DS system.
You could buy a refurbished original model from GameStop, or you could buy our budget refresh model new in box from GameStop.
as someone with a n2dsxl as their main 3ds system at the moment, I *desperately* want a n3dsxl; the top screen is so thin and flimsy that I constantly feel the urge to rip it off its hinge and I swear one day I might just give in to the voices
I will say it's nice having access to the sd card without needing a screwdriver though, especially now that I've gotten into modding, but that's about the only positive thing I can say
I swear i saw a wii mini in a store in Belgrade, Serbia as a kid, seriously thinking of getting it.
I remember giving up just because of the lack of internet
Actually the Wii Mini isn't Canada exclusive, we had them as well here in Chile
Also the reason of the existence of the 360E is that allegedly Microsoft at first "intended" to keep supporting the 360 and made the 360E as a cheaper more affordable alternative to the one so people who couldn't afford the One wouldn't feel left out
He said it was originally exclusive to Canada. It didn't stay that way.
Just hit ne that the E could just be Economy edition
@@N.i.E.M.O I remember that response. Pretty tone deaf at the time.

@@leonro the thing about homebrew emulators is that they let you basically play whatever you want without being limited to just one console's library. for older stuff it does wonders

@@AngelSeph I can't believe Sony fumbled harder than they did with the Vita and it was with another Vita
Personal shout out to the 2DS and New 2DS XL. Both of them are objectively fine but I never liked either

@@leeartlee915
If they included a worse game then I'd agree more with your view on this specific bundle.
I really hope Scott makes an updated game room tour like he did in the Game Room episode, I would love to see something like that
