In short, we heard little-to-no difference in • Warmer Tone With Coate... sound (which may actually be a good thing) but there were some other differences.

I've been doing coated ambassadors on both sides recently. You're right, the difference is very slight. But it does feel different. And I like it. It's always fun to experiment with new sounds!
After a recording session where I had to slap a ton of gaffe tape on my tom's reso head to calm it down for the bottom mic, I started thinking about using coated reso heads with clear emperors on top. This video convinced me to give it a try. It's been well over a year since I got the kit and it still has the stock heads on there, so it's overdue for a re-head anyway. Thanks again for the hard work!

I really like how well tuned they sound but still have that deep thud. Now I use evans onyx heads for reso’s and clear ec2 for batters but never thought to actually use coated. But my set up is more for a aesthetics, however I would go with a 2-ply reso head anyways rather than a 1-ply. Sound suits my needs, but I’ve definitely learned a lot watching your channel over the past year and especially during these COVID times I’m catching up on a lot of your content. Ty

Been using coated resos for over a decade. Went from coated ambassadors to black suede ambassadors and got a little more warmth. Great for recording!

I had worn-out coated batters with coated resos that still had life in em. Wanted a change so I went to clear batters and I'm happy with the sound! Haven't A/B'd with clear resos but since I use the floor tom as a kick in a smaller jungle-y setup the coated reso does complent that look.
One thing to note as well, I've only tried this combo once and honestly would prefer either clear/clear or coated/clear, but I did notice the bottom with coating is a tad easier to tune because you hear more of the fundamental and not as many overtones.

Hey Cody, another terrific video. I just got EC2s frosted as batter heads. Also purchased G1s clear for reso heads to replace the original cheap came with kit heads. I tried Remo Ambassadors as batter heads on all 3 of the Toms, 12, 13 and 16 inch. Just tried the EC2s with the G1s as reso heads, nice skund but still had a little too much overtone. Then tried the the the G1s as batter heads with original reso heads. If I apply two moongells to each , a very good tone can be achieved with tweaking. I did not moongell the ec2s . O e more "experient" is to use the Remo Ambassadors as the Reso heads , and the EC2s as batter heads. I am a 68 year old returning beginner/ intermediate drummer who has returned to drumming after 50 year hiatus. I tend to have obsessive behavior, which I hope doesn't slill over to my drumming . Its supposed to be Fun, not Work in the pursuit of a nice sound.
So I just tried an interesting setup yesterday on my 12" tom pearl export. I used a evans g2 coated for batter, and a evans hydraulic for reso. Very short sustain. I liked it.

Hey Cody? I think there’s an audible difference. With the coated resos, the overtones sound more focused. I think that’s a good outcome.
No, it’s not huge, but yeah, there’s a difference - an improvement.

I really liked coated for resos exactly for the sound. To my ear that option provides a tad more mid-range so that toms sound meatier and more pronounced. Will definitely give this combination a try, thumbs up once again!
To me, the overtones on the 'clear over coated' set up were noticeably shorter. It didn't sound too choked I thought the tone leveling off was pretty smooth. It certainly helps with articulation and in a recording environment (and in this video) can clean up those low rolling tones after attacking one or more toms. I'm sure it aids in cutting down indirect tom resonance from hitting the snare and bass drum in more modern styles as well. For entry or mid-level kits, this can be a nice hack for controlling toms with basic shell recipes and build quality.
I have been using G1 coated with Ec2 frosted on the top for a while now and are very happy. For me it gives more response at the lower volume that works great for dynamic playing and control, especially in low tuning. I'm thinking of going over to Ec2 clear on the batter since I mainly play in a rock band so I want the more "raw attack sound" but still a "softer" tone. So this video was of help to me =)
Ben Cole from D'Addario sent me a set of Evans coated Reso heads for me to check out. Experimenting with different tunings, on a Piano black Reference kit (not Pure series) with 2-ply clear batters, I was able to tune a lower fundamental note on the toms without the buzz/flap of clear Resos. I've found that the coated heads squelched some overtones present in clear Resos (ever so slightly), over single-ply Resos. I agree that it does give an ever-so-slight articulation in conjunction with 2-ply clear batters. One would not discern the difference if you put anything on your heads to muffle your heads. There is an audible difference if you tune your toms without muffling/head augmentation. I am loving your videos, BTW! 👍🏽👍🏽
I’ve played many a kit with coated (top/bottom), clear (top/ bottom) and coated top/ clear bottom but never this way round. Will have to try!! Also been toying with the idea of trying a dotted head as a reso or even dotted on both batter/ reso sides such as Tony Williams, Stewart Copeland and more latterly Steve Smith used.

Changed my snare head from clear to coated. Like it a lot. Feel on better is better. Tuning on (coated) batter is easier.

For my ears, clear reso sounds much deeper,but coated wider and a little softer,especialy it's good sounds on floor tom ( like timpano) but first tom I like more in clear version. In general,I think all this difference can be changed with mics. But thank you for this video! It was very interesting for me.

I absolutely love this video. As a drummer and engineer, I have been playing EC3's for a long time and love the attack and resonance. This overall tone that this video demonstrates is precisely what I want as a player. As an engineer, I would love to hear these toms with 421's as a mic choice! Either way, this drum head combination would be great for a live or studio application.

Great video..!!! I agree with commenter's Diehard Drums and Eric Williams. The Coated Reso's to me, make the fundamental pitch of each drum clearer (- more articulate), and to my ear they cut down the overtones of both the rack tom and floor tom noticeably. I may have try this setup on my new Pear Reference drums. Again, thanks for the great video.
I had Clear Pinstripes over Coated Ambassadors on my old Sonor kit for awhile, it sounded fine. I might do it on purpose but I feel like just a small piece of gaff on the reso will get you to the same place (rounder, warmer, less sustain) without buying all new heads.
I definitely run Coated Emperors over Coated Ambassadors on that kit full time and love the sound I'm getting with coated reso heads. No reason you can't put clears on top!

Interesting video idea if you haven't done it is changing HiHat cymbals top or bottom only. Do you guys cover cymbals? Also how traditional vs brilliant finish can benefit/hurt a mix. (I prefer traditional cymbals because they blend better with the warmer characteristics of the drums and don't get too harsh when EQing the mics) The Ride sounds great whatever it is.

Maybe its my phone but the batter heads are much more muffled or choked on the ring after striking
I noticed the same thing with the coated heads, just watching on my phone.
logically that would make sense too, the coating might not affect the high end resonance too much, but using headphones there is a difference especially with the floor tom at low dynamics, at least to my ear

Personally for me I like clear on the bottom and clear on top love my toms to ring especially in live settings I don’t have to hit them so hard to get a good sound out of them .i like the black remo heads with the white ring on them too because they sound like the clear remo drumheads as well !!!
For me, one thing I noticed is that the decay with the coated resos wasn’t quite as long as the clear, and there wasn’t as much of that basket ball boing sound in the floor tom. These are things that I seemed to pick up on while listening with headphones

I’ve been using this setup for the last year and a half and I honestly don’t think I can go back to clear resos. The heads give off a more pure, warm tone whilst the clear heads offer all the attack and definition. I also find the low frequencies to be boosted, giving the drums some real girth on top of the snap from the clear heads.
Been thinking about this for a while, hadn't had the chance to try it out! I'd have expected coated resos to give considerably less overtone, interesting that there's hardly any difference in your recordings. I'm wondering if maybe it's partly due to Evans heads generally being drier than Remo? (I'm loyal to the latter). I've tried Remo's suede snare side and I got a lot less overtone than just a clear Ambassador, but maybe that was more the tuning than anything. I dunno.

I have ambassador coated batter heads on top and bottom of my jazz kit and ...it sounds OK for almost 20 years now in all styles.
i have coated g1s on the bottom, clear hydraulics on top, both tuned very low and they roar like a giant from the depths of depths

I'm hearing slightly less sustain and more pitch bend from the coated resos...but it is pretty subtle.
I expected a bigger difference, too. I am now curious about using different reso head thicknesses in different tom sizes, similar to previous video on batters. All I need is money...
I had suedes over coated ambassadors and now I have Clear Emperor Vintage over coated ambassadors, but rather back to normal when back to my snare Genera HD Dry over Hazy emperor. I think at the very least the coated heads last a bit longer as reso heads. I also experience less sustain with my heads like this without having to add dampening to the head or inside the drum.

Being a prog rock/metal drummer, I tend to like a dry, punchy sound, & I recently found a combo I like, with *Evans Black Chrome batters & coated Evans Reso 7 resonant heads.* I really like the warmer combo. *EDIT:* However, I switched from the Black Chromes to the Evans Coated Onyx, seeing as I LOVE the Onyx EMAD on my kick. I like the Black Chromes, too, but the sticks left very noticeable, pronounced marks on their shiny surface. *So, final verdict: I like the coated Onyx batters & Reso 7's a bit more.*

Finally listened to yall on Drum Gab, cool to learn more about yall and learned some great tips, I'm selling my old pearl export and they all sound great but the floor Tom sounds completely dead on the floor ove tried all my pairs of floor Tom legs and they all kill the sustain almost entirely, is this just because the floor Tom leg mounts are placed in a horrible spot or is there some glaring fault I'm missing that can help this Tom sing!
I have been putting coated ambassadors on the bottom of my floor toms for years. I think Benny Greb does this too? Weren't all heads coated back in the day?

I tried a bunch of combos with Evan's Remo. I play mahogany drums and the coated HD Dry snare over the RESO 7 is money. Would love to see you work this head combo in a vid. NABSTER in Nashville
Honestly you can just stay clear, clear(only coated head is my batter on snare) because all the coated reso head is doing is simply dampening it and I can accomplish that by just adding moon gel where needed which you can use on both batter and reso sides and get the same sound results but at more than half the price. I personally use remo clear emperors on top and clear ambassadors on the bottom and that reason is I can accomplish any range of sound possible with that combo! If you experiment with applying small pieces of moon gel in just the right spots I can achieve any sound I want, now appropriate tuning plays a big role too. I like clear clear overall because I can play wide open with plenty of resonance or if I want the affect of a coated head or a more extreme dry or dampened sound I simply just use moon gel in the right spots which you have to experiment with and tune down a little. I love the fact I can achieve any sound basically with that simple combination of heads and achieve the same effects compared too any other head on the market. I have a full Tama 7 piece maple kit so I have a huge tuning range which helps. With different tuning settings, same setup of heads I've got and properly knowing where and how much moon gel too apply you can achieve any sound needed in my opinion and its definitely cheaper than constantly buying and trying different styles of heads when you can have it all with the combo I've just mentioned!!! I use ec2 or G2 over the reso 7. It’s a great combo especially for rock and metal. It gives you easy overtone control

Great Video my friend...I am 51 young and just bought my first Drum Set...a Pearl Export 20" 10" 12" 14" 14"....just an old childhood dream, not Midlife crisis...At least i am not idle...😉😉😉..the Snare is coded, the rest not, am i right??? Should i change out the rest of the heads to coded or is it not necessary for me as a beginner???

You should try with a hole in the bottom skin, like we do with the drum kick redo head for micing. I’ve always wondered if it would help with those overtones that we try to tune out/muffle out all the time.

With earbuds in you can hear the difference. The clear on clear resonates clearer the clear on coated seems to decay quicker, slightly muffled sound.
Hey guys - got an episode idea that hits close to home - could you do an episode on "How do I know if my bearing edges are causing sonic issues with my drum(s)?" - I have a 2009ish Catalina Maple kit (limited red sparkle) that I love but I feel like I'm not able to get clean enough lower tunings and while I've tried everything else (many different types of heads including the Level 360 G2s and G1s) and hoops (put on S-Hoops to replace the Chinese hoops that came with it) my attention is now turning to the bearing edges. They weren't initially sanded clean but I also don't have a "true table" to really check them adequately. Would love to hear your thoughts on how one might identify that the bearing edges are an issue with sonics and tuning range with a drum! Thanks - a happy Patreon supporter.
I think the difference is a little more than subtle. Yes it is warmer. Yes it sounds great. Yes I need new reso s anyway. Yes I'm doing coated. Thanks.
What about Evans EC Resonant control bottom heads combined with EC2 clean batter? Compared to EC2 and clean reso.
Not a lot of tone difference, but I hear some self-muffling with the coated reso. It has more over-tone control. Cool demo!
I had calf tone on top coated on bottom. Then I reversed it. On the 9x13 big diff. Warmer with calf on reso. And more bottom end low. Better feel with coated batter. On the 9x13. Far as the 16x16 diff animal to the 13. I havnt changed that yet. Now calf tone too coated g1 bottom. Very low warm. But. I may do same to the 16. Reverse. Nothing like a single ply coated.
Which tuning app was used? I've played around with a few, but they weren't very accurate.
i bought pinstripe but overtone is too much and ringy, i cant lessen it, i tried copying other videos there's no tapes on their batterheads, what should i do? please help

I put a coated Ambassador as my reso on only my 16 inch FT. I don't notice much difference at all. I was thinking the tom would be too dead, however I came to the same conclusion as you. There's no reason to change back

I have a uv2 coated batter over an ec2 clear and I swear my birch drums sound huge now! I do have e rings on. Have you ever tried flipping your rack Tom's upside down? The drum seems to really get a huge sound that way I have zero idea why

I have a petition for you on the snare! :D I would like to see you using a clear head (1 ply - 10 mil) on the snare side instead of a snare side head (1 ply - 3 mil).
Any particular reason why? That's an awfully thick head to use as a snare side...
I can imagine that shell thickness might effect the audible differences as well. Guessing thinner shells might reveal a more discernible difference?
Hard to say, I feel like every variable contributes both expected and surprising things. I can say that my thin drums seem to display the characteristics of a given set of heads (or sticks) pretty dramatically, but that's largely true of any drum we've done comparisons on. :) - Cody
Might just be me? But listen for the sound waves when the drums are struck. Sounds like the coated resos slowed the wave down a little faster.

It seems like with coated, it does seem to take away some of the attack. No by much but it does seem to “cushion” I guess. I kinda like the sound.
What about a Evans G1 coated on the bottom and G2 coated on top. I have a USA Custom Gretsch drum kit looking for a warm,deep sound

Maybe with a clear ambassador and a coated diplomat. I think aesthetically speaking it's not a great idea.
So over all...what heads/bottoms do ya recommend for beginners/intermediate drummers?
Hey there! Drumheads, like most other drum accessories, aren't really categorized based on player experience level. Generally speaking, if you're playing a variety of styles, I recommend coated two-ply heads like the Evans G2 for tom batters and clear single-ply heads like the Evans G1 for resos. For the snare, a single-ply coated head like the Evans UV1 or G1 makes an excellent batter head and you can't go wrong with the Evans Snare Side 300 for the reso. The Evans EMAD clear batter is a great choice for the bass drum because you can get a wide variety of sounds from it and you can keep your stock reso head unless you want to experiment with something we've covered here on the channel.
